  • The “Jūdō Sukebei”
ISSN 2029-8587 PROBLEMS OF PSYCHOLOGY IN THE 21st CENTURY Vol. 9, No. 2, 2015 85 THE “JŪDŌ SUKEBEI” PHENOMENON: WHEN CROSSING THE LINE MERITS MORE THAN SHIDŌ [MINOR INFRINGEMENT] ― SEXUAL HARASSMENT AND INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR IN JŪDŌ COACHES AND INSTRUCTORS Carl De Crée University of Rome “Tor Vergata”, Rome, Italy Ghent University, Ghent, Belgium International Association of Judo Researchers, United Kingdom E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The sport of jūdō was intended as an activity “for all”. Since in 1996 a major sex abuse scandal broke out that involved a Dutch top jūdō coach and several female elite athletes, international media have identified many more abuses. To date no scholarly studies exist that have examined the nature, extent, and consequences of these anomalies. We intend in this paper to review and analyze sexual abuses in jūdō. To do so we offer a descriptive jurisprudence overview of relevant court and disciplinary cases, followed by a qualitative-analytical approach looking at the potential factors that prompt jūdō-related bullying and sexual harassment. Sex offenders may be attracted to jūdō because of: 1. the extensive bodily contact during grappling, 2. the easy access to voyeuristic opportunities during contest weigh-ins and showering, 3. Jūdō’s authoritarian and hierarchical structure as basis for ‘grooming’, 4. lack of integration of jūdō’s core moral component in contemporary jūdō coach and instructor education, and 5. its increasing eroti- cization by elite jūdō athletes posing for nude calendars and media and by specialized pornographic jūdō manga and movies. Cultural conceptions and jurisprudence are factors that affect how people perceive the seriousness and how these offences are dealt with.

  • Kōdōkan Jūdō's Three Orphaned Forms of Counter Techniques
REVIEW ARTICLE Kōdōkan Jūdō’s Three Orphaned Forms of Counter Techniques – Part 1: The Gonosen-no-kata – “Forms of Post-Attack Initiative Counter Throws” Carl De CréeABDE Authors’ Contribution: Department of Languages and Cultures, Faculty of Arts and Philosophy, Ghent University, Belgium A Study Design B Data Collection Source of support: private resources C Statistical Analysis D Manuscript Preparation E Funds Collection Received: 30 October 2014; Accepted: 26 March 2015; Published online: 23 April 2015 ICID: 1151330 Abstract Background & Study Aim. The purpose of the present paper is to provide a comprehensive study ofgonosen-no-kata [“Forms of Post- Attack Initiative Counter Throws”], a non-officially accepted kata of Kōdōkan jūdō made popular in Western Europe by Kawaishi Mikinosuke (1899-1969). Material & Methods. To achieve this we apply historical methods and source criticism to offer a careful critical analysis of the ori- gin, history and background of this kata. Results. The first verifiable appearance of gonosen-no-kata is in 1926 at the occasion of the London Budōkwai’s 9th Annual Display, where it was publicly demonstrated by Ishiguro Keishichi (1897-1974), previously at Waseda University and since 1924 living in Paris. Thekata builds on intellectual material conceived by Takahashi Kazuyoshi. A 1932 program brochure of an Oxford University Judo Club event is the oldest known source to link Kawaishi and gonosen-no-kata. Kawaishi considered gonosen-no-kata as the third randori-no-kata. Kawaishi’s major role in spreading jūdō in France and continental Europe between 1935 and 1965, and the publication of his seminal jūdō kata book in 1956, connected his name to this kata forever.

  • Study on Sports Agents in the European Union
STUDY ON SPORTS AGENTS IN THE EUROPEAN UNION A study commissioned by the European Commission (Directorate-General for Education and Culture) November 2009 KEA – CDES – EOSE: Study on sports agents in the European Union 2 KEA – CDES – EOSE: Study on sports agents in the European Union EXECUTIVE SUMMARY I. Overview of the study In March 2007, the European Parliament invited the European Commission to assist football bodies and organisations in improving the regulations governing sports agents 1. In July 2007, the European Commission indicated in its White Paper on Sport 2 that it would “ carry out an impact assessment to provide a clear overview of the activities of players’ agents in the EU and an evaluation of whether action at EU level is necessary, which will also analyse the different possible options ”. The European Commission’s terms of reference for this study confirm that the European Commission “ wants to have an analysis of the situation regarding sports agents in all the sports they deal with”. The aim of the study is therefore to examine the situation of sports agents in the European Union and to identify, analyse and describe the questions that their activities give rise to as well as the solutions that have already been provided by public and/or private actors, thus enabling the European Commission to assess – on the basis of the data collected, the problems identified and the analyses carried out – whether intervention is required and, if so, at what level and in what form. The study develops, for the first time, a European outlook on the issue of sports agents.

SPORT POLICY IN LEBANON, 1975 to 2004 Nadim Nassif MPhil 2009 MPhil in Sport History De Montfort University, Leicester, United Kingdom SPORT POLICY IN LEBANON, 1975 to 2004 By Nadim Nassif BA, MA International Centre for Sport History and Culture, Faculty of Humanities Supervisors: - Professor Jeffrey Hill, De Montfort University, Leicester, United Kingdom. - Professor Richard Holt, De Montfort University, Leicester, United Kingdom. ABSTRACT Lebanon is a unique country. Its small size, numerous communities, geographical context, history of conflicts and foreign invasions contributes in making this research a unique study in the field of humanities and social sciences. The study of such a case gets even more complex when it comes to the evaluation of the position of sport in this society; especially since the Lebanese Government has never considered sport and the betterment of sport among its priorities. Lebanese sport reflects all the different parameters of the Lebanese scene: economic difficulties, administrative problems, religious and political tension. The situation of sport in this country is rendered even more complicated by the fact that the budget granted to sport is relatively very small; a fact that is not only detailed but is proven to have direct effects on the low position that Lebanon has in the different international sport rankings. Academically, research on this field is also still very limited and the very few works done in this domain are more descriptive than analytic. The aims of this thesis, new in its kind, is, first, to do an analysis on the sport policy administered in Lebanon from 1975 to 2004, and, then, after defining its different characteristics, propose a plan for development.
