is proud to support the 30th annual american Celtic Ball 2018 Dan Mulhall IRISH AMBASSADOR

A Chairde, Friends,

A little over thirty years ago, as the seeds of the inaugural American Celtic Ball were being laid, Margaret O’Shaughnessy Heckler was appointed by President Ronald Reagan as the first woman to serve as US Ambassador to Ireland. When Ambassador Heckler arrived in Dublin in 1985, some 300 American firms had already established a presence there. Over the course of her posting, with support from organisations like the ICCUSA, she committed to increasing that. Amongst the numerous CEOs she invited to visit Deerfield was a thirty year old Bill Gates, who, with her encouragement, opened Microsoft’s first Dublin office in 1985. Initially, Microsoft employed 20 people in Ireland. Flash forward to February 2018, however, when our Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, joined one of your honorees this evening, Caitriona Hallahan, in opening the company’s newest Dublin office, a European campus where over 2,000 highly skilled professionals work. Ambassador Heckler passed away in August. But her contribution to Irish-American relations endures. And is reflected in the fact that, alongside Microsoft, more than 700 US companies today have operations in Ireland, directly employing 155,000 people. Increasingly, however, transatlantic trade and investment is not a one way flow, but a two way street. Today there are more than 500 Irish companies with operations in this country. Between them, they employ 100,000 people in America. What do these firms do, I am sometimes asked? They build American homes, I reply – with companies like CRH, the continent’s largest asphalt producer, and Kingspan at the cutting edge of US construction. They save American lives – Aerogen’s revolutionary aerosol delivery system, developed in Galway, has improved health outcomes for more than 2.5 million Americans, while Adapt Pharma, from its plant in Philadelphia, has been to the fore in tackling the opioid crisis. They sustain Americans – whether in the form of Kerrygold, America’s third largest (and best tasting) butter brand, or in the store shelves stacked nationwide by fresh Greencore produce. During my term as Ireland’s Ambassador to the United States, I hope to nurture economic ties between our nations, supporting trade and investment in both directions to our continued mutual advantage. My success in doing so will depend to a great extent on the work of organisations like the Ireland Chamber of Commerce and your members. For three decades now, the Chamber has built the personal connections on which commerce thrives. Tonight, as you celebrate that tremendous achievement, I encourage you to also look to the future. In the uncertainty of these times, the importance of networks like yours is all the more apparent. I hope you all have a wonderful evening, and I wish you all the very best in the year ahead, and indeed for the next thirty years. Le gach dea-ghuí,

Dan Mulhall Ambassador

Dear Friends,

On behalf of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, it is my pleasure to extend a warm welcome to everyone gathered for the 29th Annual American Celtic Ball. I have long counted the Ireland Chamber of Commerce – USA (ICCUSA) as a friend and partner of the U.S. Chamber.

As a descendant of Irish immigrants, I feel a strong personal bond to the country of my heritage and its spirited people. It has been my privilege to work toward strengthening the ties between the United States and Ireland through business partnerships and commercial opportunities.

Today our bilateral economic relationship is strong—and getting stronger. Privat e investment flows steadily between our nations, creating many thousands of jobs for our peoples and billions of dollars in growth for our economies. Our nations share an innovative spirit, an entrepreneurial drive, and a thriving people-to-people relationship. We’re also working together to provide leadership in the global economy by promoting robust transatlantic trade.

The ICCUSA has been a powerful advocate for the U.S.-Ireland partnership and continues to foster mutually beneficial opportunities for both countries. I appreciate its work and congratulate all of tonight’s award recipients for their achievements and contributions.

It is my pleasure to join with the Ireland Chamber of Commerce-United States th (ICCUSA) to welcome everyone gathered for its 30 Annual American Celtic Ball.

The commonwealth is comprised of rich, vibrant, and diverse communities that provide its citizens with a wealth of knowledge in world cultures. Irish Americans are an

In addition to numerous entrepreneurial endeavors, this organization demonstrates exceptional dedication to youth leadership development. Tonight’s event is an opportunity to honor ICCUSA and the work this organization has done. oody McCarthy is a stand-up comic who lives in New York City with his wife, two daughters, and 8 million chipper neighbors. Moody has made M numerous TV appearances, highlighted by performances on Conan, Jimmy

Kimmel Live, and two sets on The Late Show with David Letterman.

Moody was born “Matthew” in Syracuse, NY, into a rambunctious household with six siblings. (They’re Irish...somebody had to get a nickname.) He began doing comedy in 1992 and was soon hired by Syracuse’s top morning radio show to be funny and cover sports. After six years of working the road, Moody moved to New York City.

This millennium has been good to Moody: he’s also been featured on Last

Dr. Richard Moore Founder

Children in Crossfire

ichard Moore’s story is an example of where triumph overcomes tragedy. In 1972, RRichard, aged 10, was blinded by a rubber bullet fired by a British soldier. Richard has never harboured any anger or bitterness as a result of what happened to him and 33 years after being shot, Richard tracked down the soldier who blinded him and the two men are now good friends. Richard states, ‘I have always forgiven the soldier who blinded me and I believe if we are to have true reconciliation in our lives, it must begin in our own heart, and the gift of forgiveness is one way to do this’.

Richard was born and grew up in the Nationalist, Creggan Estate in Derry, Northern Ireland which at the time was a ‘no go’ area. He was the second youngest of a family of 12 and was a very happy go lucky child. Richard met his wife Rita when he was 17 and they married in 1984 and today have two daughters Naoimh and Enya. After qualifying with an Honours degree from university, Richard ran his own business for fourteen years as a publican.

Music has also been a big part of his life; Richard started to learn the guitar shortly after he was shot and within a very short space of time he was playing in local bands and running a church folk group, which he still does today 38 years after he set it up.

Throughout his self-employed life, Richard became aware of many issues affecting young people and communities locally and globally. He realised the reason why he was able to lead a very positive and fulfilling life, was not only due to the good family, good community and excellent support that he received but because he was lucky enough to be born in Ireland with all its excellent amenities. He realised that with all its problems Northern Ireland was not such a bad place after all. Richard felt the need to harness all that he had learned and put it at the service of humanity, particularly children around the world who have been caught in the crossfire of poverty.

Thus inspired, Richard founded Children in Crossfire in 1996, an Irish based International Charity, also registered in the USA whose vision is ‘A compassionate world where every child can reach his or her potential’. The organisation has developed a dual approach: working in Tanzania and to improve the lives of young children; and, in Ireland, on a cross-community, cross-border basis, to help marginalised young people gain the skills and values needed to become active citizens and peace-builders. Richard’s experience is fundamental to Children in Crossfire whose principles remain rooted in values of Compassion, Peace and Justice.

Richard’s example of forgiveness and compassion caught the attention of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet who calls Richard his ‘hero’. When the two men met in July 2007 to celebrate the tenth anniversary of Children in Crossfire, the spiritual leader of the Tibetan Buddhists said, “Whether you believe it or not, you are my hero, and a wonderful son of humanity”. In May 2010 His Holiness graciously accepted Richard’s invitation to become the Patron of Children in Crossfire.

In 2009 Richard published his autobiography ‘Can I Give Him My Eyes’ which was the question Richard’s father asked doctors when they broke the news that they could not save his sight.

30th Annual American Celtic Ball 55 Irish Arts Center – Groundbreaking!

Irish Arts Center is an artistic home - - an international Irish cultural embassy where boundaries are blurred, erased, reshaped, turned on their head. Boundaries are of course nothing new for great artists to navigate -boundaries of genre, of style, of experience, of identity.

The New Irish Arts Center – the ethos, the community, and the platform – is unbounded. Unbounded by an old building, a new building, the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood, the island of Manhattan, and even the great state of New York.

Solometo said the company is built on three core principles: finding great caregivers, managing cases with care managers and offering personalized concierge services.

Last goodbyes Celebration for the 10th Anniversary

30th Annual American Celtic Ball 69 ICCUSA THE LEADING NETWORKING ORGANIZATION BETWEEN IRELAND AND THE USA

hirty years ago, few individuals realized that there was no Chamber of Commerce Trepresenting Ireland in the United States and vice-a-versa to open the doors for US companies in Ireland. The decision took place to form the Ireland Chamber of Commerce at a time when Ireland’s unemployment was at over 20% and was basically an agricultural and tourist driven economy. Over the last decade, that has changed dramatically and the American investment in Ireland has been one of the driving forces. However, we all realize that by capitalizing on the most educated young people in Europe, opportunities would lie ahead. It is interesting to know now that Ireland is the 9th largest customer for American products and services. Added to this, there are equally the same number of Americans employed in Irish companies based in America, as there are Americans in companies based in Ireland. We would like to feel that we played some small part in this success story. Our objectives are: n provide a forum for the development of business relations between the United States and Ireland n encourage and facilitate a business exchange of information, ideas and expertise between Ireland and the United States Sir Michael W.J.
