  • THE NATURE and POWER of SATAN Theorizing About the Nature
CHAPTER THREE THE NATURE AND POWER OF SATAN Theorizing about the nature, origin, and cosmological status of Satan occurs among the selected writings, especially among the later ones. However, there is an obvious lack of "speculative" interest in the sense of seeking to work out a complete cosmology of evil. Concepts as to the origin, abode, and ultimate future of Satan are often very diverse, and there are only a small number of referen ces. An analysis and interpretation of the nature of Satan as conceiv ed by the early Christian tradition will be therefore necessarily less comprehensive than a discussion of his activities. There are some basic understandings as to the nature and power of Satan common to most of the selected writers, however, and they are best summarized by the New Testament phrases: Satan, the "prince of the power of the air," "ruler of demons," "ruler of the world," and "god of this age." A. SATAN: PRINCE OF THE POWER OF THE AIR 1. Origin of Satan For the most part, the New Testament writers make no theoreti cal assertions as to the origin of Satan. However, a number of passages by choice of words and phraseology seem to reflect the idea of Satan as a fallen angel who is chief among a class of fallen angels, an idea which appears frequently in apocalyptic literature.1 II Peter 2 :4, for example, refers to the angels that sinned and were cast into hell. Jude 6 mentions "the angels that did not keep their own position but left their proper dwelling ..

  • A Framework of Sustainable Design for the Region of Palestine
The Pennsylvania State University The Graduate School College of Arts & Architecture A FRAMEWORK OF SUSTAINABLE DESIGN FOR THE REGION OF PALESTINE A Thesis in Architecture by Hala Marwan Haddad © 2010 Hala Marwan Haddad Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Architecture December 2010 The Thesis of Hala Marwan Haddad was reviewed and approved* by the following: Ute Poerschke Associate Professor of Architecture Thesis Advisor James Wines Professor of Architecture Madis Pihlak Associate Professor of Architecture Alexandra Staub Associate Professor of Architecture *Signatures are on file in the Graduate School. ii Abstract: Many definitions of sustainable design have emerged in the past twenty years, most of which focused on the environmental part of the design process. In recent years, especially with the emergence of sustainable design as an international trend, more attention has been directed towards the social and economic part of sustainable design for a building to be truly sustainable and able of fitting in any context, for the long run. This thesis explores into the different dimensions of sustainable design, studying what makes a building sustainable, and using that as a base to define sustainable design in the region of Palestine, a small country in the northern part of the Middle East and east of Mediterranean, to define a framework of sustainable design. The framework achieved at the end of this study uses the vernacular as a passively sustainable prototype of sustainable design, for its environmental, socio cultural and economic complexity of a building, integrated with modern active techniques, that helped define the framework and helps define the future of the vernacular as a sustainable structure in different regions of the world.

  • APPROACHES to OCCULTISM in the QUR'an and the SUNNAH
Kelam Araştırmaları 1:1 (2003), s.21-36. APPROACHES to OCCULTISM in THE QUR'AN AND THE SUNNAH İlyas ÇELEBİ, Ph.D, Marmara Universitiy Divinity Faculty [email protected] I. Definition Occultism is a general term, used for the movements which claim that one can get some information or can display extraordinary actions through using the inner skills or establishing relationships with the supernatural beings or events. The one who is occultic involved in movements can also claim that they can reach the knowledge of the truth and upper sentimental world, not by experimental methods and rational ways but by using some unusual methods. Occultism was originated in the primitive societies which means to believe, above all, in the mythological beings, whilst they try to explain or understand the Nature and what happens in it; as a result of this, they show the false and secret reasons instead of the actual reasons. This method can also exhibit a convenient position with their ontology based on the mythology .Some occultist methods appeared and were handed down via generations by transforming these methods into more systematic and more mysterious forms, such as in the Sumerian, the Assyrian, the Babylonian and the Indian civilisations. It is noted that in the beginning of Islam, to whom Islam addressed first Arabs, had some important information of every kinds of occultism. Some scholars such Ibn al-Nadim, Ibn Haldun, Tashkoprizadah or Katip Cheleby, have listed certain occultist methods in their classifications of the Sciences. Among

The Angel That Troubled the Waters THORTON WILDER The Pool.— A vast gray hall with a hole in the ceiling open to the sky. Broad stone steps lead up from the water on its four sides. The water is continuously restless and throws blue reflections upon the walls. The sick, the blind and the malformed are lying on the steps. The long stretches of silence and despair are broken from time to time when one or an other groans and turns in his rags, or raises a fretful wail or a sudden cry of exasperation at long- continued pain. A door leads out upon the porch where the atten - dants of the sick are playing at dice, waiting for the call to fling their masters into the water when the angel of healing stirs the pool. Beyond the porch there is a glimpse of the fierce sunlight and the empty streets of an oriental noonday. Suddenly the angel appears upon the top step. His face and robe shine with a color that is both silver and gold, and the wings of blue and green, tipped with rose, shimmer in the tremulous light. He walks slowly down among the shapeless sleepers and stands gazing into the water that already trembles in anticipa - tion of its virtue.

  • Teacher Bible Study Lesson Overview
4th-6th Grade Kids Bible Study Guide Unit 23, Session 2: John’s Birth Was Predicted TEACHER BIBLE STUDY At the end of the Old Testament, God spoke these words to His people: “Look, I am going to send you Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome Day of the Lord comes” (Malachi 4:5). Then a period of silence began. For 400 years, God did not speak to the Jewish people as He had done through the prophets. The period between the Old and New Testaments was a time of significant change. The Jews saw Persian rule overtaken by Alexander the Great and the Greeks. They were forbidden to practice religion, and the temple in Jerusalem was turned into a pagan shrine. Then Maccabeus, the son of a priest, led the Jewish people to fight for and win their independence, and the temple was cleansed. But the new leaders became corrupt, and the Jews asked a Roman general to restore order. Rome restored order among the Jews but also submitted them to Roman rule. In 37 B.C., the Roman senate appointed Herod the Great to be king over Palestine—the land of the former kingdoms of Israel and Judah. Herod was king when Jesus was born, and his son Herod Antipas was the Herod whose marriage John the Baptist denounced. (See Matthew 14:3-4.) Zechariah the priest was serving in the temple during the reign of Herod the Great when Gabriel, an angel of the Lord, appeared. Gabriel said, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, because your prayer has been heard.

Al-Zubaidi Executive Director Arab Society of English Language Studies Abstract Bahasa Melayu (Malaysian Language) like other languages has borrowed a number of words from other languages. This paper presents a study of Arabic borrowed words in Bahasa Melayu. It illustrates the main characteristics of the Arabic borrowed words: nouns of different types, adjectives, astrology, sciences, finance, trade, commerce, religious words and daily expressions. The researcher brought together ten categories of loan words (in three languages, Malay, Arabic and English). In conclusion, the researcher finds out that the main stream of Arabic borrowed words in Bahasa Melayu is due to the large influence of Islam. This study will provide the groundwork for further researches which will lead to enrich the linguistics and Islamic studies.
