Usually, “homecoming” is considered a time honored tradition held at high schools and colleges during the crisp days of autumn, infused with football games, dances and reunions. Th e homecoming or “coming home” theme of this issue of Horizons relates as well to Mount Mercy traditions of honoring the past, while embracing the future. Th ere are much anticipated and celebrated practices at MMA that will most likely never Horizons Staff change, such as Ring Day and Miss Mercy, which remain embedded in our memories forever. ALUMNAE RELATIONS MANAGER Editor/Writer/Layout Ring Day, now held in February to coincide with the anniversary of the opening of the fi rst Tina Scarpello Webster ’91 house of Mercy in Buff alo in the year 1858, continues to be a special ceremony held for [email protected] our Junior Class, initiating them into the wider circle of Mercy women. Th e wireless access in all of our buildings has been increased to support the infl ux of new and additional devices, allowing for President Peggy Flanagan Barrett ’73 creative use of applications and programs to enhance both teaching and learning. At Mount Vice President Michele Donohue Nostrant ’86 Mercy Academy we continue to grow, change, and excel, while preserving the traditions Secretary Eva Evaldi Byrne ’86 which make us who we are. Together with the on-going support of our constituents, families, Treasurer Margaret Whalen Brady ’99 alumnae and friends, MMA will continue to prepare our students to become women leaders of the future. Four new members from the senior class and 27 new members from the junior class were inducted, joining the 12 current members. MMA alumna Erin Gormley from the class of 2006 addressed the inductees. Congratulations to these students on their wonderful achievement! ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS Mount Mercy Academy would like to congratulate the following future Mercy students as they are awarded these prestigious scholarships. Th ese students will enter Mount Mercy as freshmen in September 2017. We welcome these young women and all of the members of the Class of 2021! Th e Mount Mercy Academy Alumnae Academic Scholarship is a four year full tuition scholarship awarded to the highest scorer on the Catholic High School Entrance Exam. Congratulations to Emily Rhoads from SS. Peter and Paul School in Hamburg. Th e Mount Mercy Academy President’s Academic Scholarship is a four year half tuition scholarship awarded to the second highest scorer on the Catholic High School Entrance Exam. Congratulations to Lara Groves from Notre Dame Academy in South Buff alo. Th e Mount Mercy Academy Principal’s Academic Scholarship is a four year $2,000 tuition scholarship awarded to the third and fourth highest scorers on the Catholic High School Entrance Exam. Congratulations to Zoe Gray from St. John Vianney School in Orchard Park and Claire Mullen from East Aurora Middle School. Th e Catherine McAuley Academic Scholarship is a four year $1,000 tuition scholarship awarded to the 3 3 fi fth highest scorer on the Catholic High School Entrance Exam. You are cordially invited to the 2017 McAuley Gala presenting, Homecoming: Celebrate the Past, Embrace the Future, at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 29 at the Orchard Park Country Club. Please join chairs Jane (Michalek ’92) Harrington and Mary Clare Keenan ’79 and Michael Gluc with host Kevin O’Connell from Channel 2 WGRZ-TV, as we raise funds for student scholarships and educational advancements. Th is one-of-a-kind evening will feature a not to be missed silent and live auction, elegant dining, entertainment and Mercy hospitality. Tickets to the Gala are available for $150, which includes three hours of open bar, passed hors d’ oeuvres, three-course gourmet dinner and a fabulous evening celebrating the past and future of Mount Mercy Academy. THE AUCTION Can’t make it to the Gala but would like to donate a gift for auction? Popular items include summer-themed gifts, Buff alo-themed items and art, unique home & outdoor decor, event tickets and experiences, etc. We also look for larger Live Auction items if you or a friend you know would like to donate your vacation home for a few days, airline and hotel miles and points, corporate box or suites at stadiums or arenas. All proceeds from the Gala help to ensure the best possible education for the young women of Mount Mercy Academy. All donations are tax deductible and you will be recognized in our catalog and on stage as the generous donor.
