Las especies m6s conspicuas del orden en el intermareal marplatense son : Phymactis clematis Aulactinia marglatensis, Oulactis muscosa, Iricnidactis errans y . AnthothW chilensis . El Wea de estudio elegido fue punta Cantera (38» 05' S, 57» 32'W), par ser una oona de f6cil acceso y con buena representatividad del grupo estudiado . Se realioaron muestreos mensuales para el estudio de los diversos par6metros reproductivos, qua permitan evaluar a estrategia reproductiva de estos actiniarios . Todas las especies son dioicas o gonocbricas con ambos sexos representados en una proporcidn l a l en !as actiniidos estudiados . En T . errans y A . chiIensis, hay desviacidn respecto a esa proporcibn ya gue las agregaciones gue las caracterioan est6n constituidas par uno de los dos sexos casi exclusivamente, femenino en el primer caso y masculino en el segundo . El estudio de la gametog6nesis indicd muchas similitudes con las caracteristicas referentes a otras especies de actiniarios ; la formacidn de los espermatoooides se realioa en cistos espermAticos ubicados en la mesogloea de los mesenterios f6rtiles, entre mdsculo retractor y filamento mesenterial . Las hembras se caracterioan pox, presentar un gran rango de tallas de ovocitos durante gran parte del aRo, con un notorio reinicio del ciclo reproductivo a fines del verano, si bien en P . clematis se registraron en algunos individuos, diferenciaciones de c6lulas gametog6nicas en otros periodos del aRo, posteriores a la expulsidn de las gametas . No obstante, en la mayoria de los meses, en las tres especies de actiniidos hay una notoria disparidad del grado . de desarrollo de los ovocitos entre diferentes hembras . En estos cnidarios no hay ningdn tipo de c6lulas nutriceas o "nurse cells", pero si es caracteristica la presencia del trofonema (estructura gue "une" el ovocito al celenterbn e interviene en su nutricibn) y la "espinacidn" desarrollada sabre la superficie de los ovocitos maduros . ' Sstos son liberados a trav6s de la boca, en un ndmero de unos cientos par veo, y el tamaRo en las tres especies oscila entre 120 y 150 pm . Si bien el climax reproductivo es estival, hay presencia de elementos maduros en gran parte del aNo, con la subsecuente liberacibn en diversos periodos . La fertilioacibn es externa y fue estudiado el desarrollo embrionario y larval de las tres especies, en laboratorio . La formacidn de la larva plInula insume de 48 a 72 horas'^ se caracterioa par presentar un penacho apical de f lagelos, gue dirige hacia adelante, rotando simultaneamente en sentido de las agujas de1 reloj . A los pocos dias la larva pl6nula, gue posee numerosos cnidae, desarrolla mesenterios y se acerca al sustrato . El tipo reproductivo de las tres especies estudiadas es el oviparo- planctdnico-planctotrdfico (se8dn Chia, l976), gue caracterioa a las especies de huevos pegueRos (menores a 300 pm), gue son liberados en gran n6mero y fertilioados externamente ; las plInulas resultantes son capaces de amplia dispersibn, a pesar gue en el plancton enfrentan la posible inanicibn, y fuerte presibn depredadora . Tricnidactis errans y Anthothob chilensis, de talla menor gue los actiniidos estudiados, tienen diferente tipo de distribucibn, en el limite entre el mediolitoral inferior e infralitoral superior ; agui forman agregaciones, o "clones" mediante reproduccibn asexual par laceracibn pedal en el primer caso, y par fisibn longitudinal en el segundo . T . errans en la agregacidn estudiada se feproduce asexualmente durante todo el aRo, en porcentajes gue oscilan del 20 al 96 % de los individuos . El ndmero de fragmentos producidos es variable, con un minima en !as meses invernales (media de 1,5 fragmentos), gue se eleva con el aumento de la temperatura del aqua de mar We Noviembre a Mayo, con una media de 4 fragmentos) . La produccidn de gametas se halla restringida de Febrero hasta Abril y muestra claramente un ciclo anual, pero a pesar de ser una especie dioica, la agregacibn de T . errans estudiada consiste casi exclusivamente de individuos hembras . No hay diferencias significativas entre el ndmero de fragmentos producidos par individuos est6riles y f6rtiles (adultos, de talla mayor), lo gue implica gue la produccidn de fragmentos no tiene relacidn directa con el tamaRo de los individuos, ni inversa con respecto a la gametog6nesis en los individuos . En Anthothob chilensis, la fisibn longitudinal es a trav6s de endoceles de mesenterios perfectos, perpendicular al eje directivo . La fisidn y consecuente regeneracidn es en el sentido prbximo-distal, y la formacidn de nuevos mesenterios es en la oona de cicatrioacibn . En este caso, la reproduccidn asexual es manifiesta sblo en los meses estivales, cuando asciende la temperatura del aqua de mar, y coma resultado del incremento de la fisidn en la agregacibn, disminuye la media de la talla We los individuos . Los ejemplares fdrtiles est6n escasamente repre%entados, dnicamente entre Noviembre y Snero, y son machos, exclusivamente . 8n ambas especies de Mesomyaria estudiadas, se repite lo observado para otras especies de este grupo, Haliplanella lineata (Verrill) y Metridium exilis Hand par Ghick y Lamb (1977) y Bucklin (l987a), respectivamente ; estos autores encuentran gue estas especies se reproducen estrictamente par reproduccidn asexual, estando los sexos representados en diferentes poblaciones . The genus Oceanactis Moseley, 1877 is considered synonymous with Oractts McMurrich, 1893 and is the only genus belonging to the family Oractiidae Riemann-ZUrneck, 2000. This species was de- scribed as Oractis diomedeae McMurrich, 1893 from several specimens collected in California (McMurrich 1893), The taxonomic status of Oractis McMurrich, 1893 was not clear for a long time: initially described as a fbrm related to Gonactinia Sars, 1851 (Gonactiniidae), it was referred to the Andresiidae by Carlgren (1931) and later to the Haloclavidae by Carlgren (1949). Stephenson (1935: 30) pointed out that Oractis is an unusual form, not fitting readily into any family. He considered "may it to be related to the Halcampoididae or it be an immature or aberrant Ilyan- thid." Recently Riemann-ZUrneck (2000) established a new family Oractiidae and described a second species belonging to this genus, Oractis bursijt?ra Riemann- ZUrneck, 20oo, based on a single specimen from the central Arctic deep sea in- (Amundsen Basin, 3ooOm).

FAUTIN his ancient phylum of mostly marine organisms is best known for its contribution to geomorphological features, forming thousands of square Tkilometres of coral reefs in warm tropical waters. Their fossil remains contribute to some limestones. Cnidarians are also significant components of the plankton, where large medusae – popularly called jellyfish – and colonial forms like Portuguese man-of-war and stringy siphonophores prey on other organisms including small fish. Some of these species are justly feared by humans for their stings, which in some cases can be fatal. Certainly, most New Zealanders will have encountered cnidarians when rambling along beaches and fossicking in rock pools where sea anemones and diminutive bushy hydroids abound. In New Zealand’s fiords and in deeper water on seamounts, black corals and branching gorgonians can form veritable trees five metres high or more. In contrast, inland inhabitants of continental landmasses who have never, or rarely, seen an ocean or visited a seashore can hardly be impressed with the Cnidaria as a phylum – freshwater cnidarians are relatively few, restricted to tiny hydras, the branching hydroid Cordylophora, and rare medusae. Worldwide, there are about 10,000 described species, with perhaps half as many again undescribed. All cnidarians have nettle cells known as nematocysts (or cnidae – from the Greek, knide, a nettle), extraordinarily complex structures that are effectively invaginated coiled tubes within a cell.

The present paper provides a complete zoogeographical analysis of the sea anemones (Actiniaria and Corallimorpharia) of continental Chile. The species described in the primary literature are listed, including depth and distribution records. Records and the taxonomic status of many eastern South Pacific species are doubtful and need revision and confirmation. Since 1994, we have collected more than 1200 specimens belonging to at least 41 species of Actiniaria and Corallimorpharia. We sampled more than 170 sites along the Chilean coast between Arica (18°30’S, 70°19’W) and the Straits of Magellan (53°36’S, 70°56’W) from the intertidal to 40 m depth. The results of three recent expeditions to the Guaitecas Islands (44°S) and the Central Patagonian Zone (48°-52°S) are included in this study. In the fjord Comau, an ROV was used to detect the bathymetrical distribution of sea anemones down to 255 m. A distribution map of the studied shallow water sea anemones is given. The northern part of the fjord region is inhabited by the most species (27). The results show the continuation of species characteristic for the exposed coast south of 42°S and the joining of typical fjord species at this latitude. This differs from the classical concept of an abrupt change in the faunal composition south of 42°S.

In 1949, the late Professor Oskar Carlgren of Lund, Sweden, published a bibliographical survey of the sea anemones of the world, comprising 42 families, 201 genera and 848 species. The survey is an essential starting point for any taxonomic or zoogeographical work on sea anemones. One might expect sessile polyps to be unpromising subjects for behavioral work compared with medusae, whose activities are so much more visible. Moreover, medusae, unlike polyps, possess nervous systems with ganglia and nerves conveniently accessible for surgical and recording techniques. Indeed, MACKIE at the Salamanca meeting proposed that each ganglion of Sarsia should be regarded as a central nervous system, a sharp contrast with the complete absence of such aggregations in the polyps (MACKIE, 1971). It can be a disadvantage, however, to study behavior against a background of visible rhythmic activity as occurs in medusae. It is this circumstance that makes polyps, and especially anemones which are mostly large, solitary creatures, surprisingly good for behavior studies. I shall review here some activities of anemones in order to advance some suggestions about the type and level of neuromuscular organisation that carries out these activities. I shall remind you of some of the phenomena shown· in our film "Passengers or Partners?" and I shall comment on some other observations and some earlier work.

The present paper provides a complete zoogeographical analysis of the sea anemones (Actiniaria and Corallimorpharia) of continental Chile. The species described in the primary literature are listed, including depth and distribution records. Records and the taxonomic status of many eastern South Pacific species are doubtful and need revision and confirmation. Since 1994, we have collected more than 1200 specimens belonging to at least 41 species of Actiniaria and Corallimorpharia. We sampled more than 170 sites along the Chilean coast between Arica (18°30’S, 70°19’W) and the Straits of Magellan (53°36’S, 70°56’W) from the intertidal to 40 m depth.
