The mystery of the Trinity is incomprehensible, yet it is so simple when we live it. But do we live it? PARISH OFFICE SHOP: New stock has arrived in the Parish shop, also a wide variety of candles will be available from Thursday for many and varied celebrations, also cemetery candles. Feel free to call. PRAYERS AND SYMPATHY: To the family of the Very Rev Canon Patrick Horgan, l/o Dromtariffe, Co. Cork who worked for many years in St. Michael’s College, Listowel. Canon Pat played a huge part in designing and re- dedicating many Churches and Altars across the Diocese. Wonderful to give a homily and has been well noted for his huge contribution to religious matters on the Horizons programme with Mary Fagan. Canon Pat had a beautiful and caring Priesthood where the Word of God was always central to all he did and celebrated. May he reap the rewards of his labour. To the Fitzgerald family Pat and Kathleen, on the sudden and tragic death of their bother Jimmy in Woodgrove during the week. We extend our sympathy to his cousins in the Parish, his wonderful neighbours and wide circle of friends who have been deeply shocked and saddened at his death. He will be welcomed with open arms into Heaven. May Canon Pat and Jimmy rest gently. THREE’S COMPANY The sign of the Cross is the Christian’s logo symbol. From the very beginning, at Baptism, when Parents and Priest sign a baby on the forehead, to the last farewell – again the sign of the Cross – over our Coffin. It signifies that the person making or receiving it belongs to the Father, to the Son and to the Holy Spirit – to the Trinity, in short. Often it’s used so mindlessly and indiscriminately that we seldom think of what we are doing. We’re too busy waiting for the sermon, the meal, the ‘real’ prayer that follows, that we don’t notice that we have said the most powerful prayer already. Properly done, in wordless movement, it expresses a great deal. You firstly touch your head, dedicating your mind to God, as you say “In the name of the Father”. Secondly, you touch the base of your heart, the symbol of love, while we speak the name of the one who loved us first; and the Son. Thirdly, you move from shoulder to shoulder, from which our arms spring, the agents of action, as we say “and of the Holy Spirit”, with the sign of the Cross we indicate to whom we belong. By this blessing, with the simple sign and these simple words, we show we are no longer our own man or woman. Whatever follows, the prayer I pray, the meal I eat, the journey I take, the job I do, I do them not in my name and for my glory, but in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. You are never alone: three’s company - Father, Son and Holy Spirit. THE MYSTERY OF GOD Isaac Newton was one of the greatest mathematicians and scientists who ever lived. Yet towards the end of his life said of his achievements; “I do not know how I appear to the world, but to myself I appear to have been like a little boy playing on the seashore and diverting myself in now and then finding smoother pebble or a prettier shell than ordinary whilst the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before”. Even when we think we understand the mystery of GOD, we are still only beginning. We are still only children playing on the shore. But Jesus has lifted the veil on the mystery, and so we know that our games have a meaning and that our lives have a goal. We have a Father who cares about us; We have a loving Brother who died for us; and we have a Spirit, a comforter, who will guide us to the shores of eternity. GLORY BE TO THE FATHER, AND TO THE SON, AND TO THE HOLY SPIRIT AS IT WAS IN THE BEGINNING IS NOW AND EVER SHALL BE WORLD WITHOUT END AMEN. COMMUNITY NOTICES: COMMUNITY GAMES ATHLETIC FINALS: will be held in An Riocht Castleisland on the June 11th & 12th. All competitors who qualified in Moyvane/Knockanure heats are eligible to attend. Good Luck to all. KNOCKANURE COMMUNITY ALERT: Meeting on this Monday night at Community Centre Knockanure at 8.00p.m. Further info. Contact Margaret Carmody at 087/2976304. GENTLE JIMMY….. Jimmy’s sudden and very tragic death through a house fire last Monday night has upset, saddened and shocked all of us. His gentle smiling presence in our Village touched all who had the time and energy to engage with him. He had a lovely turn of phrase and his words were always kind, clean and courteous. I had very many nice encounters with Jimmy since my arrival in the Parish last July, and I feel very blessed to have received them. He deserves a very special place in Heaven – and Jesus will see to it that Jimmy will be safe and well for all time. As we continue to pray for his brother Pat and sister Kathleen, relatives here in the Parish and his great neighbours in Woodgrove, together with his Home Helps and friends at home and away, who were always kind and supportive to Jimmy. Gardaí and all the Emergency services were excellent in bringing the fire under control and in all their sensitive and caring work which they did so professionally and brilliantly. A special word of thanks to Lyons’ Undertakers, Derry, who are taking such care of Jimmy, with respect and great dignity as we prepare for his funeral. May God bless and help them in all that they do especially in times like this. May our Parish be touched by God’s healing and blessing at this sad time. Consequently in order to determine the long-term run-off from each of the catchments at the possible discharge points, an average annual rainfall of 1336mm is assumed. This is the average rainfall on the Feale catchment, which is the closest catchment to the River Tyshe with recorded data. The catchment lies in Hydrometric Area 23 in which the estimated annual losses due to evapo-transpiration are 490mm. Thus, the average annual run-off is 1336 – 490 = 846mm/annum, which is equivalent to an average daily flow (ADF) (846 x 1.0 x 106) (1000 x 365.25) = 2,316 m3/d/km2 (0.027 l/s/km2) of catchment area. In the absence of recorded river dry weather and 95 percentile flow data, it is necessary to attempt to calculate what the flows might be for the River Tyshe using the estimated average daily flow.
