Materials List for Janet A. Cook’s Pen and Ink Workshop - July 2018 - [email protected] Pens For the majority of this workshop we will be using Micron pens, they are based on ‘technical pens’ for drafting, and need only the weight of the pen itself to draw a line. They work best on smooth paper, as rough paper wears the nib out very quickly. Please bare this in mind when you first start to work with these pens. On the first day, just bring Micron pens and sketchbook. 1. Sakura Pigma Micron Pens with a medium nib: Size 0.01, Yellow (NOTE! Yellow is not available in .005 size), 2. Sakura Pigma Micron Pens with a fine nib; Size 0.005, in Orange, Brown and Black. Store flat. 3. (Optional) Copic Multiliner Pens: Brown and Sepia Size: 0.03mm – these pens have a very fine nib and are good for tiny details. Store nib down. 4. Zebra Pen G-402, 0.5mm, Black or G405, 0.7mm Black with Fine point, but this tends to blot more. or Parker® Ballpoint Pen, Fine Point, 0.7mm, Black (Please Do NOT get Roller Ball or Gel Pens which use a different ink) OR Tombow, Fine point ballpoint pen, 0.7mm OR Fisher Pen with fine nib Or a regular Bic pen OR Muji fine tip ballpoint pen (also erasable) 5. Sakura White Gelly Roll, Medium or Fine Point Pen. 6. Faber-Castell PITT artist Pen, White 101. 7. White Prismacolor pencil or similar. (Not a pastel) Paper 1. This class is aimed at sketchers, so choose a white paper sketchbook that is easy to carry around with you; for example 6x3 (landscape format), 9” x 6”, or larger if you prefer. Try to get one with a spiral, as the pages lay flat. I also like the paper in Moleskin sketchbooks, it’s very smooth and it will take thin washes of watercolor. If you prefer loose sheets of paper that’s ok too, just make sure the paper has a high rag (cotton) content and is very smooth! 2. Bring 3-6 toned light to mid value, smooth (in mid grey and mid value sienna) 10x8 inches or similar. Bring 2 sheets of Foam Board, 20in. x 30in., in white or Sand or Gray to transport your work and act as a drawing board. Bring ‘Artists Tape’ to secure paper to your board. 3. 1 pad of HOT PRESSED Watercolor Paper Block (Please do not bring cold pressed) either: Fabriano Artistico HOT PRESSED Watercolor paper block. White, 9x12 inches or larger. Or Arches Aquarelle HOT PRESSED Watercolor paper block, 140 Lb, white. 9x12 inches or larger. Or a single sheet of HOT PRESSED 200 LB or greater, cut into smaller quarters. Bring ‘Artists Tape’ to secure it to your foam core board. Paint & brushes 1. Travel size Watercolor tin with little tubes or blocks with any warm yellow such as Cadmium Yellow, Raw Sienna, Cadmium Red, Alizarin Crimson, Cerlium Blue, Burnt Sienna, Sap Green, Ultramarine Blue, and Black. 2. Water container. 3. Paper towels. 4. Palette to mix on. 5. 3 or more brushes, you will need a large medium and small. 1-2 inch or wider synthetic or bristle brush, ½ inch ‘bright’, ‘flat’ or ‘round’ brush One round synthetic brush – size 1 or 0 for detail work. Optional: Colored pencils, these can be added over marker and pen – I like Prismacolor and Derwent. Bring assortment – of light, medium and dark values in greens, reds, browns and blues. Miscellaneous: HB pencil, Staedtler Mars Plastic eraser, Artist’s tape, paper towels, a foldable chair, umbrella (for rain and shine this is to screen you and your work so make sure it has a clamp that you can attach to a near by object of a chair), hat, sunscreen, bug spray.
