He has written a variety of scripts and earned a number of Bafta nominations. Richards has composed stories and scripts for video games that include Starship Titanic, which was written along with famed science fiction author Douglas Adams, and several more. He also stays busy by consulting with companies about digital storytelling. Neil met Matt Costello in the nineties. Born in 1948, the science fiction writer and Richards eventually formed a writing partnership. Costello is based in New York City and together they have composed a number of hours of good television. Costello also writes scripts and designs games. His novel Beneath Still Waters was adapted into a 2005 movie. When it comes to crime fiction, the two tried their hand at it in novel form with their Cherringham series. They agree that an Englishman and an American collaborating on stories about crime with heroes that are English as well as American seems an idea that was long overdue for them. Neil Richards is the co-creator and the author of the Cherringham fictional series. It is written along with author Matthew Costello. The first novel in the series was released for readers to enjoy in 2013. The debut story was titled Murder on Thames. The sequel came out shortly after and is titled Mystery at the Manor. There are well over two dozen novels in the series, so check it out if you are looking for a series to read with plenty of stories to offer! The 33rd book in the series came out in 2019 and is titled Cliffhanger. Murder on Thames is the first book in the Cherringham series. If you are looking for an intriguing murder mystery story to check out, then this is the novel for you! The story starts out in Cherringham, which is known for being a peaceful and a quiet town located in the Cotswolds. It is a place that is known for its slow way of life, and even time itself seems to move in a slower way there. The people that live there do not experience crime frequently. Nothing happens that is outside of the ordinary, at least most of the time. That all changes when a body is found one morning. It is a woman and she was found dead, still located in the local river. It is determined that the victim is Sammi Jackson. Why she was in the water and whether there was foul play involved is yet to be seen. Meanwhile, a new face is coming into town. Sarah Edwards has moved here with her children and brought the three of them to Cherringham after her marriage totally and utterly fell apart. It seemed the right thing to do, but the last thing that you want to hear when you’re moving to a new place is that someone has just been found dead there under suspicious circumstances. This was supposed to be a safe place to start a new life with her kids. Now Cherringham is seeming to be more sinister than she would have hoped for. Adding to her sense of distress is the fact that she knew the dead woman. Sammi had been one of Sarah’s friends before both of them decided to move on to live in London. They haven’t been in close tough for some time now, but Sarah cannot help but think that this death could have involved someone else with a motive to kill. She also has a personal tie to the case, which doesn’t help her become less interested or invested. However, working doing web design and trying to get her kids fed and off to school does not leave time to work on solving cases independently. She isn’t even sure what she would be able to accomplish, honestly, and her children and her busy schedule demand her time. Little does she know about Jack Brennan’s existence in town, but she’s about to find out! Jack was a homicide detective with the NYPD but has since retired. He moved to Cherringham in the hopes that he would finally be able to have the type of quiet life he has been after all this time. Even though it is exactly the type of peace that he has been after, Jack realizes quickly that the slower way of living may not be for him after all. When Sarah requests his help to look into the death of her friend, he has some doubts about it. However, retirement isn’t exactly the perfect fit that he thought it would be. He needs some action and so agrees to help her look into things. However, the case quickly appears to be more complex than they would have thought. There are many things about the victim’s life that end up coming out as a result of their search. Her father’s problem with alcohol comes up, as well as an ex-boyfriend with a history of violence. It seems that there are plenty of secrets out there, and Jack and Sarah are determined to find out what really happened. The two of them are going to use all that they have got to figure out this case. Will their efforts be enough, or is someone on their tail trying to make sure that no one finds out who did this? Pick up the first book in this series to find out! Mystery at the Manor is the second book in the Cherringham series. If you love mysteries and murder combined into one compelling plot, pick up this engaging sequel! Mogdon Manor is owned by the elderly Victor Hamblyn. When he dies in a fire, it looks like an accident to the untrained eye. However, there are at least two people that have their doubts. Sarah is suspicious of the fire, as is Jack. The three children of the victim are all in middle age. The potential heirs all live in Cherringham as well. They’re also potential killers. Could one have them done it? The Story QUAKE Background: You get the phone call at 4 a.m. By 5:30 you're in the secret installation. The commander explains tersely, "It's about the Slipgate device. Once we perfect these, we'll be able to use them to transport people and cargo from one place to another instantly. "An enemy codenamed Quake, is using his own slipgates to insert death squads inside our bases to kill, steal, and kidnap. "The hell of it is we have no idea where he's from. Our top scientists think Quake's not from Earth, but another dimension. They say Quake's preparing to unleash his real army, whatever that is. "You're our best man. This is Operation Counterstrike and you're in charge. Find Quake, and stop him ... or it ... You have full authority to requisition anything you need. If the eggheads are right, all our lives are expendable." Prelude to Destruction: While scouting the neighborhood, you hear shots back at the base. Damn, that Quake bastard works fast! He heard about Operation Counterstrike, and hit first. Racing back, you see the place is overrun. You are almost certainly the only survivor. Operation Counterstrike is over. Except for you. You know that the heart of the installation holds a slipgate. Since Quake's killers came through, it is still set to his dimension. You can use it to get loose in his hometown. Maybe you can get to the asshole personally. You pump a round into your shotgun, and get moving. • High-Performance Play: the Making of Machinima
High-Performance Play: The Making of Machinima Henry Lowood Stanford University <DRAFT. Do not cite or distribute. To appear in: Videogames and Art: Intersections and Interactions, Andy Clarke and Grethe Mitchell (eds.), Intellect Books (UK), 2005. Please contact author, [email protected], for permission.> Abstract: Machinima is the making of animated movies in real time through the use of computer game technology. The projects that launched machinima embedded gameplay in practices of performance, spectatorship, subversion, modification, and community. This article is concerned primarily with the earliest machinima projects. In this phase, DOOM and especially Quake movie makers created practices of game performance and high-performance technology that yielded a new medium for linear storytelling and artistic expression. My aim is not to answer the question, “are games art?”, but to suggest that game-based performance practices will influence work in artistic and narrative media. Biography: Henry Lowood is Curator for History of Science & Technology Collections at Stanford University and co-Principal Investigator for the How They Got Game Project in the Stanford Humanities Laboratory. A historian of science and technology, he teaches Stanford’s annual course on the history of computer game design. With the collaboration of the Internet Archive and the Academy of Machinima Arts and Sciences, he is currently working on a project to develop The Machinima Archive, a permanent repository to document the history of Machinima moviemaking. A body of research on the social and cultural impacts of interactive entertainment is gradually replacing the dismissal of computer games and videogames as mindless amusement for young boys. There are many good reasons for taking computer games1 seriously.

  • ABSTRACT LOHMEYER, EDWIN LLOYD. Unstable Aesthetics
ABSTRACT LOHMEYER, EDWIN LLOYD. Unstable Aesthetics: The Game Engine and Art Modifications (Under the direction of Dr. Andrew Johnston). This dissertation examines episodes in the history of video game modding between 1995 and 2010, situated around the introduction of the game engine as a software framework for developing three-dimensional gamespaces. These modifications made to existing software and hardware were an aesthetic practice used by programmers and artists to explore the relationship between abstraction, the materiality of game systems, and our phenomenal engagement with digital media. The contemporary artists that I highlight—JODI, Cory Arcangel, Orhan Kipcak, Julian Oliver, and Tom Betts—gravitated toward modding because it allowed them to unveil the technical processes of the engine underneath layers of the game’s familiar interface, in turn, recalibrating conventional play into sensual experiences of difference, uncertainty, and the new. From an engagement with abstract forms, they employed modding techniques to articulate new modes of aesthetic participation through an affective encounter with altered game systems. Furthermore, they used abstraction, the very strangeness of the mod’s formal elements, to reveal our habitual interactions with video games by destabilizing conventional gamespaces through sensory modalities of apperception and proprioception. In considering the imbrication of technics and aesthetics in game engines, this work aims to resituate modding practices within a dynamic and more inclusive understanding
