Nets Shows Its Support for Singapore's Table Tennis Champions
For immediate release MEDIA RELEASE NETS SHOWS ITS SUPPORT FOR SINGAPORE’S TABLE TENNIS CHAMPIONS NETS to produce limited edition ‘Champions’ cards to kick-start STTA Sports Fund Singapore, 26 June 2010 – Singapore‟s leading electronic payments provider, NETS, and the Singapore Table Tennis Association (STTA) today announced an official partnership that will see NETS‟ support to kick-start the STTA Sports Fund. NETS will be producing 20,000 limited edition „Champions‟ NETS FlashPay cards featuring Team Singapore Feng Tianwei, Yu Mengyu, Sun Beibei, Li Jiawei and Wang Yuegu. Net proceeds from the sale of the card will go towards the setting up of the STTA Sports Fund. NETS Chief Executive Officer, Ms Poh Mui Hoon, said, “In winning the World Table Tennis Team Championships 2010, the Singapore Table Tennis National Women‟s Team have earned themselves a well-deserved place in Singapore‟s sporting history. As Singapore‟s homegrown company, NETS shares in the joy of the team‟s achievement and takes inspiration from their can-do spirit.” To commemorate the team‟s win, each member of the winning World Table Tennis Championship 2010 team will receive a personalised NETS FlashPay card. The all-in-one NETS FlashPay card can be used for the MRT, LRT and public buses, ERP gantries and carparks, and at over 8,000 retail acceptance points across the island for small-value purchases. “But more than just commemorating their win, we wanted to do something practical that would help the players long-term. MEDIA RELEASE STTA UNVEILS PLANS FOR YEAR 2013 First and Foremost, we would like to announce that Li Jiawei will be officially retiring from her sport and her last day of service with Singapore Table Tennis Association will be on the 31 December 2012. As a singles player, Jiawei achieved her highest world ranking in December 2005, when she was third. Her best achievements included finishing in fourth place in singles at both the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens and the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. In 2008, the Singapore women's team composed of Li and her teammates Feng Tianwei and Wang Yuegu defeated South Korea 3–2 in the semifinals, marking the first time that Singapore had won an Olympic medal since 1960. In 2010, Li Jiawei was part of the women’s team that defeated the defending champion China at the World Team Table Tennis Championships 2010. At the recent London 2012 Olympic Games, Li won the women's team bronze medal together with Tianwei and Yuegu. The Singapore Table Tennis Association (STTA) would like to take this opportunity to thank her for her outstanding service. Since 1998, Jiawei has lead the Singapore team to numerous victories and brought many sporting glory to Singapore. Despite taking time to start off a family in 2009, Jiawei has shown great dedication and fighting spirit for her sport and is a true inspiration for all Singaporeans. Secondly, Sun Beibei will also be retiring as a player and she will be contributing back to Singapore by being a coach to the youth players in our School within School Programme at the Singapore Sports School. -

The factors that were considered by the Selection Committee were the recipient’s versatility, impact on the sport association, personal contribution, overall merit and other qualities. The award recipients for 2009 are as follows: Most Promising Young Player: ISABELLE LI Our promising youth player is an aspiring pro. Isabelle Li’s relentless pursuit for excellence in her sports makes her the recipient of the Most Promising Young Player. In 2009, Isabelle won the mixed team bronze at the Asian Youth Games, and a girls U-15 singles bronze at the Asian Championships. In Sept 2009, she became the top junior girls’ qualifies at the ITTF World Junior Circuit Finals and ITTF Cadet Challenge. The Table Tennis Illustrated, Autumn Issue recently featured Isabelle Li as the cover girl. Special Award of the Year: SUN BEI BEI The special award of the year represents exceptional performances achieved by the athlete for the year 2009. -
