Anthropogenic Organic Contaminants in Sediments of the Lippe River, Germany Alexander Kronimus*, Jan Schwarzbauer, Larissa Dsikowitzky, Sabine Heim, Ralf Littke
ARTICLE IN PRESS Water Research 38 (2004) 3473–3484 Anthropogenic organic contaminants in sediments of the Lippe river, Germany Alexander Kronimus*, Jan Schwarzbauer, Larissa Dsikowitzky, Sabine Heim, Ralf Littke Institute of Geology and Geochemistry of Petroleum and Coal, RWTH Aachen University, Lochnerstrasse 4-20, D-52056 Aachen, Germany Received 13 August 2003; received in revised form 27 January2004; accepted 8 April 2004 Abstract Sediment samples of the Lippe river (Germany) taken between August 1999 and March 2001 were investigated by GC–MS-analyses. These analyses were performed as non-target-screening approaches in order to identify a wide range of anthropogenic organic contaminants. Unknown contaminants like 3,6-dichlorocarbazole and bis(4-octylphenyl) amine as well as anthropogenic molecular marker compounds were selected for quantification. The obtained qualitative and quantitative analytical results were interpreted in order to visualize the anthropogenic contamination of the Lippe river including spatial distribution, input effects and time dependent occurrence. Anthropogenic molecular markers derived from municipal sources like polycyclic musks, 4-oxoisophorone and methyltriclosan as well as from agricultural sources (hexachlorobenzene) were gathered. In addition molecular markers derived from effluents of three different industrial branches, e.g. halogenated organics, tetrachlorobenzyltoluenes and tetrabutyltin, were identified. While municipal and agricultural contaminations were ubiquitous and diffusive, industrial emission -

Basic Genealogical Sources in Westphalia – an Introduction Online Westphalia Connection Session, Dec
Basic Genealogical Sources in Westphalia – An Introduction Online Westphalia Connection Session, Dec. 5th, 2020, Roland Linde Dear genealogists, I would like to give you some advice how you can obtain further information about your ancestors in Westphalia. But I can only give you a very few initial clues because its a fairly broad topic. Perhaps I can tell you more about the history of Westphalia in another conference; it is a diverse landscape with strong cultural, economic and religious differences. Around 1800 Westphalia still consisted of various clerical and secular principalities, larger and smaller, some of which were Catholic and some were Protestant. Then the French came under Emperor Napoleon and turned Westphalia pretty much on its head. With the Congress of Vienna in 1815, Westphalia first emerged as a state unit, as a province of the Kingdom of Prussia. Münster became the provincial capital. In 1816, Prussia set up three administrative districts (Regierungsbezirke) within this province: Münster (western Westphalia), Arnsberg (southern Westphalia) and Minden (eastern Westphalia). The administrative districts were again divided into districts (Kreise) and these into rural and urban communities (Gemeinden und Städte). That doesn't sound terribly exciting, but as a genealogist you have to know that in order to find the sources. The Prussians founded a state archive in Münster, in which the historical tradition for the whole of Westphalia was brought together. It still exists today under a different name. Exactly 150 years later, in 1946, the Allied occupying powers smashed the Free State of Prussia, which had dominated Germany since 1815. From the two western provinces of Prussia, the Rhineland and Westphalia, today's state of North Rhine-Westphalia (Nordrhein-Westfalen) emerged under the British military government at that time. -

Kroppa a Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, 14412 Potsdam, Germany Abstract Phenological timing – i.e. the course of annually recurring development stages in nature – is of particular interest since it can be understood as a proxy for the climate at a specific region; moreover changes in the so called phenological phases can be a direct consequence of climate change. We analyze records of botanical phenology and study their fluctuations which we find to depend on the seasons. In contrast to previous studies, where typically trends in the phenology of individual species are estimated, we consider the ensemble of all available phases and propose a phenological index that characterizes the influence of climate on the multitude of botanical species. Keywords: phenology, phenological index, temperature, climate change, North Rhine-Westphalia PACS: 1. Introduction Phenology is a well-known concept in ecology to describe the timing of cer- tain periodical development stages of species throughout the year [1]. Develop- mental stages, or phases (e.g. flowering, fruit ripening, leaf coloring, foliation), have been studied over many decades in Europe using defined plant species. This information is often used to develop phenological calendars and describe natural seasons [2]. -
