They believed that modernization, secularization, and the privatization of religion would have global impact, leading to overall patterns of religious decline. What has happened is quite different and more complex. While religion has declined in some societies and grown in others, it has also changed and evolved in different ways in a variety of contexts. This transformation of religion, long-standing or novel, impacts our world in key ways. From the rise of religious movements, to the role of religion in politics and to the much more spirited engagement of religion in the public sphere and the public lives of adherents we experience religion in many different ways. To address this unexpected and rapidly changing situation, the Institute for Religion, Culture, and Public Life brings together scholars and students in religion, cultural anthropology, history, political science, economics, sociology and social psychology, and other allied fields to support multi-disciplinary analysis, reflection, and response to historical and contemporary issues of great significance. Founded in 2008, the Institute also engages in its programs political and economic figures and policy practitioners, as well as religious and cultural leaders. The scope of the Institute encompasses a broad range of phenomena, and while seeking to understand the bases of conflict and unrest across and within religions, it also examines beliefs, practices, and historical examples that demonstrate the potential for understanding, tolerance, and ecumenical values within religious traditions, as well as patterns of social institutions that may facilitate coexistence and mutual support. -

Program on Arab Reform and Democracy From Political Activism to Democratic Change in the Arab World May 12-13, 2011 Bios of Participants Christopher Alexander Christopher Alexander is Associate Dean for International Programs and Director of the Dean Rusk International Studies Program at Davidson College. He also teaches Middle East politics in Davidson’s Department of Political Science. His publications on political and economic development in North Africa include Tunisia: Stability and Reform in the Modern Maghreb (Routledge, 2010). Maryam Alkhawaja Maryam Alkhawaja currently serves as the head of the foreign relations office at the Bahrain Centre for Human Rights. Due to threats of arrest during a crackdown on activists, Maryam was forced to leave Bahrain in September 2010 due to threat of arrest, but she returned on the 10th of February to document and report on human rights violations during the uprising planned to begin on the 14th. Since then, Maryam has been a leading activist in speaking to the international media and reporting to international organizations about the situation in Bahrain. Prior to arriving in the US, Maryam traveled to Geneva to speak at the UN Human Rights Council. Due to her activism, she has been subjected to defamation, harassment, and death threats; and now is not able to return to Bahrain due to being targeted. Her father, uncle and two brothers in law are currently in under arrest, their whereabouts unknown. Amer Bani Amer Dr. Bani Amer has been the founder and general Director of Al-Hayat Center since May 2006 and has been a young leader activist since 1994. -

Ghias Abstract Defining Shariʿa: The Politics of Islamic Judicial Review by Shoaib A. Ghias Doctor of Philosophy in Jurisprudence and Social Policy University of California, Berkeley Professor Malcolm M. Feeley, Chair Since the Islamic resurgence of the 1970s, many Muslim postcolonial countries have established and empowered constitutional courts to declare laws conflicting with shariʿa as unconstitutional. The central question explored in this dissertation is whether and to what extent constitutional doctrine developed in shariʿa review is contingent on the ruling regime or represents lasting trends in interpretations of shariʿa. Using the case of Pakistan, this dissertation contends that the long-term discursive trends in shariʿa are determined in the religio-political space and only reflected in state law through the interaction of shariʿa politics, regime politics, and judicial politics. The research is based on materials gathered during fieldwork in Pakistan and datasets of Federal Shariat Court and Supreme Court cases and judges. In particular, the dissertation offers a political-institutional framework to study shariʿa review in a British postcolonial court system through exploring the role of professional and scholar judges, the discretion of the chief justice, the system of judicial appointments and tenure, and the political structure of appeal that combine to make courts agents of the political regime. -

Her book, Religious Freedom at Risk: The EU, French schools, and Why the Veil was Banned, takes up these issues in France and the wider European context. Dr. Adrian holds her Ph.D. in Social Anthropology and the Study of Religion from Harvard University (USA), an M.A from Essex University (U.K), an A.M from Harvard University (USA), and a B.A from the University of Waterloo. (Canada). Dr. Adrian is currently on faculty in the Department of Law and Legal Studies at Carleton University in Ottawa. -

Political Islam in Egypt CEPS Working Document No. 266/May 2007 Emad El-Din Shahin Abstract. Drawing on results from a survey among members of the Muslim Brothers and the Wasat Party, Emad El- Din Shahin, Professor at the American University in Cairo and Harvard University, looks at changes in Egyptian political Islam and examines the views of mainstream Islamists of the European Union polices and initiatives in the Mediterranean. The discussion focuses on the Muslim Brothers, the country's main opposition force, and the Wasat Party, as purporting to represent an evolving Islamic centrist orientation. Despite their seemingly different orientations, the commonalities between the two groups regarding their views of the EU far outweigh their differences. Their shared Islamic frame of reference and a perceived inconsistency of EU policies in the region largely explain this similarity. This working paper is based on contributions made to a conference on “Political Islam and the European Union” organised by CEPS and La Fundación para las Relaciones Internacionales y el Diálogo Exterior (FRIDE) and hosted by the Fundación Tres Culturas in Sevilla in November 2006. At this conference Arab and Turkish scholars presented papers on the ‘Muslim democrat’ political parties of the Arab Mediterranean states and Turkey. The papers were written in response to a questionnaire on the following topics: • Evolution of Islamist parties and their views on political reform issues • Their views of Europe as a democratic model and on EU foreign policy • Their views on areas of potential collaboration, and of difference with Europe All conference contributions are currently being prepared for publication in a single volume by CEPS and FRIDE. -

Key Issues in Religion and World Affairs 1 The ISIS Crisis and the Broken Politics of the Middle East Nader Hashemi University of Denver November, 2016 Introduction When future historians of the Middle East look back on the early 21st century, the rise of The Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS or the Islamic State) will be discussed as a key turning point in the politics of the region.1 As a result of Nader Hashemi is Associate Professor at the Josef Korbel ISIS’ expansion in 2014, the boundary between Iraq and School of International Studies, Syria has effectively dissolved. MALS Mentor: John Borelli, Ph.D. ABSTRACT In this age of intense polarization between liberal freedom and political correctness, on the one hand, and the demagoguery of religious extremists and politicians, on the other hand, there is unending argument, strife, and brinkmanship threatening the peace of our civil society. Religion is frequently used to polarize parties instead of bringing humanity together and invoking the better angels of human nature. Rather than helping bring agreement via dialogue, religion is used to create enemies. Religion is being used to wage war and evoke fears instead of establishing peace and building fruitful alliances. Interfaith dialogue represents a meaningful way to bring parties together peacefully in a way that resolves conflicts and creates friendships. Additionally, interfaith dialogue allows for spiritual sharing and spiritual companionship which opens pathways of communication that lead to opportunities for greater mutual respect and shared understanding.
