  • Jean Meslier and "The Gentle Inclination of Nature"
Jean Meslier and "The Gentle Inclination of Nature" translated by Marvin Mandell I. Of a Certain Jean Meslier HOW ASTONISHING that the prevailing historiography finds no place for an atheist priest in the reign of Louis XIV. More than that, he was a revolutionary communist and internationalist, an avowed materialist, a convinced hedonist, an authentically passionate and vindictively, anti-Christian prophet, but also, and above all, a philosopher in every sense of the word, a philosopher proposing a vision of the world that is coherent, articulated, and defended step by step before the tribunal of the world, without any obligation to conventional Western reasoning. Jean Meslier under his cassock contained all the dynamite at the core of the 18th century. This priest with no reputation and without any memorial furnishes an ideological arsenal of the thought of the Enlightenment's radical faction, that of the ultras, all of whom, drinking from his fountain, innocently pretend to be ignorant of his very name. A number of his theses earn for his borrowers a reputation only won by usurping his work. Suppressed references prevent the reverence due to him. His work? Just a single book, but what a book! A monster of more than a thousand manuscript pages, written with a goose quill pen under the glimmer of the fireplace and candles in an Ardennes vicarage between the so-called Great Century and the one following, called the Enlightenment, which he endorsed, by frequent use of the word, the sealed fate of the 18th century. A handwritten book, never published during the lifetime of its author, probably read by no one other than by its conceiver.

Running head: FROM PROPAGANDA TO A BLOCKBUSTER: The role of nationality in the reinterpretation of Captain America for modern, international audiences From propaganda to a blockbuster: The role of nationality in the reinterpretation of Captain America for modern, international audiences Master’s Thesis Eeva-Kaisa Lintala University of Jyväskylä Department of Language and Communications Studies 17.04.2017 FROM PROPAGANDA TO A BLOCKBUSTER: The role of nationality in the reinterpretation of Captain America for modern, international audiences 2 UNIVERSITY OF JYVÄSKYLÄ Faculty Department HUMANITIES Department of Language and Communications Studies Author Eeva-Kaisa Lintala Title From propaganda to a blockbuster: The role of nationality in the reinterpretation of Captain America for modern, international audiences Subject Nature of the Study Intercultural Communication Master’s thesis Date Number of pages in total 17.04.2017 63 Abstract Captain America comics were originally created in the 1940s as war propaganda. In the 2010s the story was remade as a successful movie franchise. Nowadays Hollywood is quite dependent on overseas sales, which is something they need to consider when producing their high-budget films. This thesis concentrates on how the story and the character of Captain America were reshaped to better appeal to modern and international audiences. This is done by comparing the ways America/Americans and other countries/ nationalities are addressed both in the comics and the films. The study shows that the movies include more references to other countries and nationalities, and there are considerable positive references to Germany, the main villain of the comics. America and American nationalism play a central role in both versions, but the movies take a more discreet and often comical approach to the overflowing patriotism surrounding the story.

All the Worthingtoiis in America are believed to have descended from Nicholas, who came to New England in 1649, and from Capt. lohn, who is first known of in Maryland in 1675, and who died April 9, 1701, leaving several sons. Both, pi-obabh', descended from the Worthingtons of Lancashire, and such is the tradition of both families. In this genealogy will be found only those who are descended from Nicholas, and, as it is most probable that he belonged to the Shevington branch of the family of Worthington, of Worthing- " ton. County Lancashire, England, I have given the Herald's Visitations" of that branch down to 1650, at which time Nicholas was in New England. The origin of our name as given in the " Heraldic Journal, 1868," is Wearth-in-ton, from three Saxon words, meaning Farm-in-town. The old Hall at Worthington, where the family resided for seven hundred years, was recently pulled down. The Coat of Arms here given are those of the Worthingtons of Lancashire and Cheshire. While I have been exceedingly anxioiis to secure accuracy and completeness, many errors and omissions must necessarily occtir in a work of this kind. If all corrections and omissions, together with any additional records which may be in the possession of some hitherto uninterested member, or one who may not have received my "Genealogical Inquirj'," will be forwarded to the compiler, addressed to 775 Case avenue, Cleveland, Ohio, within the vear, it will be printed as an addition to the present records.

Avengers : Infinity War • Watch the trailer to the movie : Avengers – Infinity War • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ZfuNTqbHE8 • If you can find a link online or copy on a streaming service, it would be fantastic to watch the whole film and then work through this PowerPoint. • You may have already watched this film, and if not there will be some videos and links within the PowerPoint, to look at how some of the themes in the film link to the Bible. Infinity Stones • The movie centres around Thanos’ search for the six infinity stones. Each stone represents a different power. If you possess all six stones, then you are the most powerful hero in the multiverse. • Have a look at the infinity stones and their powers in the image. • If you could have only one stone which one would you choose? • What do you think the Soul Stone might give someone power over and would you want that kind of power? • Watch the clip ‘Dr Strange predicted the future of the Avengers infinity War’ on Youtube or follow the link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gMJZ57hz2-Q • Strange pushes on toward that destiny and allows himself and half the people in the universe to be destroyed. This is terribly difficult to digest but Strange referred to this course of action as the endgame. Discussion Questions • This idea of being able to see the lasting effects of our choices is very attractive. There are times in our lives where we are faced with various opportunities, such as career and relationship choices that it seems appealing to be able to know the outcome of our choices.

An Annotated Bibliography by Jack Baur and Amanda Jacobs-Foust with Carla Avitabile, Casey Gilly, Jessica Lee, Holly Nguyen, JoAnn Rees, Shawna Sherman, and Elsie Tep May 17th, 2012 Table of Contents Introduction 2 Young Readers 3 Middle School 7 High School 14 Older Teens 22 Prepared by BAYA for the California Library Association 1 Introduction It’s no secret that comics (or “graphic novels,” if you prefer) are hot items in the library world these days. Oh, we’ve known that for years, but recently publishers have been getting into the game in a big way. Too big, arguably. As publishers struggle, it seems like more and more they are turning to graphic novels as new revenue streams, to diversify existing properties, or as ways to repackage old content. With the deluge of titles coming at us, it’s becoming increasingly difficult for a librarian who isn’t deeply invested in their GN collection or tuned into the world of comics publishing to discern the excellent titles from the merely popular, and the quality from the... well, crap. And oh there’s a lot of crap out there these days... But there’s a whole lot of great stuff, too. Comics are a wonderful and unique medium, which allow any kind of story or instruction to be delivered in a way that is fun, engaging, and accessible. Just like other storytelling forms, the content can be simple and amusing, or it can be deep and challenging. It’s no surprise that comics are seeing such a jump in popularity and acceptance now.
