ABSTRACT Physical and paleontologic stratigraphy of the low Middle Ordovician strata of southern Nevada and adjoining California indicates that only the OrtMdiella and Anomalorthis Zones of the Whiterock Stage have significant time value. The Palliseria Assemblage Zone is younger on the west of the report area than on the east. It is related to a migrating lithic facies that crosses other time zones. The RhysostropJiia Zone is removed from the Whiterock and is assigned to the Marmor Stage. Whiterock, Marmor, and Porterfield strata are considered conformable with a transition zone possibly representing the Ashby Stage. Physical stratigraphy corroborates LongwelFs estimate of 25^0 miles of right lateral movement on the Las Vegas shear zone and of several thrust plates shingled to the south of the shear. In this southern area, evidence suggests that the upper sands of the Eureka Quartzite had a northerly source. INTRODUCTION This report summarizes the distribution of rock types and enclosed fossils of Early and Middle Ordovician age in southern Nevada and adjacent California. It is based in large part on six sections measured along an east-west line from the Arrow Canyon Range, Nev., to the Inyo Mountains, Calif., (fig. 1; table 1). The infor­ mation from these sections has been supplemented by data from others both to the north and to the south. SCOPE AND EXTENT OF INVESTIGATION Attention has been given primarily to the upper part of the Pogo- nip Group and its relation to the overlying Eureka Quartzite. Several problems involve correlation of the faunas of the Antelope Valley Limestone of the Pogonip and have continentwide significance. These problems cannot be solved with the information presented here. Sections are needed for the western Spring Mountains and the Pahrump area of Nevada and for the Grapevine Mountains and the area near Pyramid Peak in California. This is, therefore, a progress report in which I have attempted to present some of the bothersome problems in regional correlation and to make available the stratigraphic data obtained to date (1962). ORDOVICIAN FORMATIONS, NEVADA AND CALIFORNIA C5 Without the two-volume monograph on "Chazyan and Related Brachiopods" by Cooper (1956), 155 genera and hundreds of species would have remained obscure or unknown. The availability of an authoritative work covering one of the most important elements of the fossil fauna permitted a much greater proportion of time to be devoted to stratigraphy than would otherwise have been possible. A few undescribed species have been found in this study as might be expected, but they are to be covered in a later taxonomic report. In connection with his study, Cooper revised the old threefold division (Chazy, Black Eiver, and Trenton) of the Middle Ordovician to accommodate several f aunal zones that seemed to be intermediate between them. His revision resulted in six stages (p. C73). The Chazy was retained but renamed the Marmor, and the Whiterock was interposed between it and the Early Ordovician.

Neue Funde und das reichhaltige Material aus der Sammlung Rhebergen, in der auch fast vollstandige Panzerhemden von A. berneri enthalten sind, ermoglich- ten eine Rekonstruktion. ,Weiterhin wird die aus Nonvegen beschriebene Art Atractopyge gracilis der Gattung Atractocybel- oides zugeordnet. Abstract Five taxa of the small trilobite genus Atractocybeloides are presented from Middle to Late Ordovician erratic boulders, includ- ing the new species Atractocybeloides nebeni n. sp. and Atractocybeloides oepiki n. sp. The genus was errected in 1991 on the basis of fragmentary material. It evolved from Cybele during Aseri-zone times. A reconstruction is made possible due to new finds and the rich material from the Rhebergen collection, including nearly complete cuticles of A. berneri. Furthermore, Atructopyge gracilis from Norway is assigned to Atractocybeloides. Strong similarities exist to the roughly coeval, small trilo- bite genus Cybeloides, which is known from North America.     OIL SHALE OF THE UINTA BASIN, NORTHEASTERN UTAH. By DEAN E. WINCHESTER. INTRODUCTION. ' The oil shale in northeastern Utah was examined at three or four widely separated localities in 1913 with rather discouraging results.1 Two years later the study was begun in more detail by the writer near Watson,2 and in view of the encouraging findings of this work a party under the direction of the writer during the field season of 1916 studied the zone of oil shale along the south side of the Uinta Basin from Watson west to Soldier Summit. This work included rough mapping of the outcrop of the rich shale zone, together with the testing of numerous samples to determine the approximate value of the shale as a future source of shale oil. In so far as they apply to that part of the Uinta Basin lying in Utah, data obtained during the previous investigations are repeated here so that the basin may be studied as a unit. The writer was assisted in the field by W. B. Wilson and John N. Massey, each of whom had participated in the work of 1915. The apparatus described in detail in Bulletin 641 was used to make th'e field distillations of the shale. The reconnaissance studies of the Uinta Basin have proved the existence along its entire southern margin of a bed or beds of oil shale of minable thickness and as rich as or richer than those mined in Scotland at the present time. Previous examinations by mem­ bers of the Geological Survey have revealed the fact that at practi­ cally all points along the north side of the basin, the Green River formation (containing the oil shale) is concealed beneath younger Tocks which overlie the oil-shale beds unconformably, so that the area within the Uinta Basin underlain by oil shale can not be deter­ mined without extensive prospecting with the drill.

    AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF DIANE CAROL WISE for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE in Geology presented on August 13, 1976 Title: PALEOZOIC GEOLOGY OF THE DOBBIN SUMMIT- CLEAR CREEK AREA, MONITOR RANGE, NYiE COUNTY, NEVADA Abstract approved: Redacted for Privacy son Paleozoic limestones, dolomites, quartz arenites, and other clastic rocks were mapped in the vicinity of Dobbin Summit and Clear Creek in the central Monitor Range. Sedimentary rock units present in this area represent the shallow-shelf eastern assemblage and basin and also the basin-slope facies of the traditional limestone- clastic assemblage. The four oldest, Ordovician, units were deposited in shallow shelf environments. The Lower Ordovician Goodwin Formation is composed of about 1200 feet of calcareous shales and thin-bedded limestones. The overlying Antelope Valley Limestone is about 500 feet thick and consists of wackestones, packstones, and rare algal grainstones.The Copenhagen Formation (135 feet thick) is the highest regressive deposit of sandstone, siltstone, and limestone below the transgressive Eureka Quartzite.The Eureka is a quartz arenite 181 feet thick, with an intercalated shallow marine dolomite member. The transition from shallow to deep water conditions can be seen in the change from algal boundstones to laminated lime mud- stones in the Hanson Creek Formation (190 feet thick).The super- jacent Roberts Mountains Formation (285 feet thick) is composed of lime mudstones and allodapic beds deposited in basinal, deep water conditions.During earliest Devonian

Nach Gründung der Bundesrepublik Deutschland wurden die Bundesaufgaben zunächst dem Amt für Bodenforschung in Hannover übertragen. 1958 wurde die Bundesanstalt für Bodenforschung (ab 1975 Bundesanstalt für Geowissenschaften und Rohstoffe, BGR) aus dem Bestand des Amtes für Bodenforschung errichtet. Die BGR arbeitet auf der Grundlage eines Verwaltungsabkommens eng mit dem Landesamtes für Bergbau, Energie und Geologie (LBEG) zusammen.

By THE MIDDLE OF THE NINETEENTH CENTURY the forging furnaces of western expansionism had wrought a tough breed of pioneers who were making their way into the Uinta Basin of eastern Utah. As early as October 3, 1861, the date President Lincoln established the Uintah Indian Reservation in that area, some white settlers were circum­ scribed by reservation boundaries. Other whites followed to establish trading posts among the Utes and to perform government service in connection with the newly named Indian lands. l By 1879 most all Utah Utes had been forced from their tradi­ tional homes and were living on the Uintah Reservation. Smith Wells 183 western Colorado were also relocated to the Uinta Basin. Their south­ ern Colorado neighbors, the Uncompahgre, although nonpartici­ pants in the Meeker tragedy, were arbitrarily sucked into the vortex of consequences rising out of that foray. Federal officials moved them into the Uinta Basin as well, placing them on the newly created Un­ compahgre Reservation. Even then, neither reservation was free from trespass; encroachment by whites was relentless. In 1886 the army established Fort Duchesne and sent large con­ tingents of black as well as white soldiers to this outpost.
