INVENTORY TO ARCHIVAL BOXES IN THE MOTION PICTURE, BROADCASTING, AND RECORDED SOUND DIVISION OF THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS Compiled by MBRS Staff (Last Update December 2017) Introduction The following is an inventory of film and television related paper and manuscript materials held by the Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division of the Library of Congress. Our collection of paper materials includes continuities, scripts, tie-in-books, scrapbooks, press releases, newsreel summaries, publicity notebooks, press books, lobby cards, theater programs, production notes, and much more. These items have been acquired through copyright deposit, purchased, or gifted to the division. How to Use this Inventory The inventory is organized by box number with each letter representing a specific box type. The majority of the boxes listed include content information. Please note that over the years, the content of the boxes has been described in different ways and are not consistent. The “card” column used to refer to a set of card catalogs that documented our holdings of particular paper materials: press book, posters, continuity, reviews, and other. The majority of this information has been entered into our Merged Audiovisual Information System (MAVIS) database. Boxes indicating “MAVIS” in the last column have catalog records within the new database. To locate material, use the CTRL-F function to search the document by keyword, title, or format. Paper and manuscript materials are also listed in the MAVIS database. This database is only accessible on-site in the Moving Image Research Center. If you are unable to locate a specific item in this inventory, please contact the reading room. -

From Abbott and Costello in the Foreign Legion to Zorro Rides Again: A Guide to the Filmscripts in the Lilly Library Book Department There are presently over nine hundred scripts in the Lilly Li brary Book department. The movies represented range from the silent version of Ben Hur to Breaking Away. The collection's scope is broad; one can find scripts for great film classics, musicals, mys teries, adventures, shorts, westerns, comedies, and science fiction movies. Many types of filmscripts make up the collection-drafts, cutting continuities, preliminary editions, shooting finals. Gener ally the scripts are accompanied by publicity photos. Although the majority of filmscripts in the collection are for talkies, several scripts are for silent films. The text of a silent film script is devoted primarily to directions for camera shots and de scriptions of the action, and provides title captions instead of dia logue. The earliest script in the collection is for The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (released in 1921), the film that gave Rudolph Valentino his first starring role. The Big Parade (1925), King Vidor's popular film about an average man's experiences at war, estab lished John Gilbert as a top star. The Jazz Singer (1927) was the first full length feature with both singing and talking, starring AI }olson in his first movie role. Wings (1928), considered to be the last of the silent spectaculars, was the first movie to receive an Academy Award. Clara Bow and Charles Rogers starred in this tale of World War I flyers. One of the most lavish films of the silent era was the the 1926 MGM version of Ben Hur, starring Ramon Novarro, directed by William Wellman. -

Peter Lorre Season at BFI Southbank
Peter Lorre season at BFI Southbank Season marks the fiftieth anniversary of Lorre’s death and will include screenings of 22 films including M, Mad Love, Casablanca and The Maltese Falcon Monday 28 July 2014, London BFI Southbank today announces a season dedicated to one of the most nuanced and complex actors of his generation Peter Lorre. Marking the fiftieth anniversary of his death, this five week retrospective from Tuesday 2 September – Tuesday 7 October will feature some of Lorre’s most celebrated roles. Lorre was famed for playing sinister characters and even holds the prestigious position of being the first actor to ever portray a Bond villain, when he played Le Chiffre in a 1954 television adaptation of Casino Royale. The season will showcase a number of Lorre’s villainous screen moments such as The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934) and Crime and Punishment (1935), as well as his roles in some of the most iconic films of the golden age of Hollywood including Casablanca (1942) and The Maltese Falcon (1941). The centrepiece of the season will be the film which made Lorre a star, Fritz Lang’s psychological thriller M (1931), re-released by the BFI in cinemas across the UK on September 5. Born László Loewenstein in the small Austro-Hungarian town of Rószahegy (now in present day Slovakia), Lorre won critical acclaim for his theatre work with Bertolt Brecht and international fame beckoned after his first major film role as a compulsive child murderer in M. Made two years before Hitler came to power Lang’s film was renowned for its striking imagery and inventive use of sound; playing on extended run at BFI Southbank this re-release can now be enjoyed in a pin-sharp restoration. -

SUMMER 2010 Noir City Sentinel 35 EUROPEAN EXILES Part Six BERNHARDT, LITVAK, NEGULESCO The Forgotten Film Noir Directors by Marc Svetov Special to the Sentinel hortly after the takeover of power by the Nazis in 1933, propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels Sheld a now famous meeting with the staff of Ufa film studios. The executive staff as well as those who actually made the films—directors, producers, actors—attended. In his speech, Goebbels declared that the talents at the studio would henceforth be obli- gated to follow certain guidelines. He named five examples of the type of films he wanted the Germans to make: a Greta Garbo film; Fritz Lang’s Nibelungen; Battleship Potemkin, directed by Sergei Eisenstein (Goebbels praised it for its filmmaking, not for its “communistic poison”) and The Last Company and The Rebel, two films by Kurt Bernhardt—as he was then known. “None of these films could have been conceived,” Goebbels explained, “in the degen- erate brain of a Jewish director.” A baffling comment, at best. Sergei Eisenstein was Russian-Jewish, and Fritz Lang, even if he’d wanted to, could never be a pure-blooded German as his mother was Jewish. Kurt Bernhardt was also a Jew. His film The Rebel deals with a highly cherished narrative of German chauvinism: the blood-and-soil fight of the Tyrolean people against Napoleonic France. It was produced by Alexis Smith is lusted after by Humphrey Bogart in Bernhardt's 1945 noir Conflict, based on a story by fellow emi- Paul Kohner, later a famed Hollywood agent—a Jew; gré Robert Siodmak Actor Ludwig Stoessel, also Jewish, played a key role in the film. -
