From the Division of Tourism Director
Join the conversation! November/ December 2013 Welcome to the Missouri Film News, a monthly e-newsletter produced by the Missouri Film Office a part of the Missouri Division of Tourism. Here you’ll get the latest updates on film and digital production in Missouri and learn about creative media events happening across our state. From the Division of Tourism Director: “ I thought the script was a fair portrayal of Walt as a mogul but also as an artist and a human being.” -Saving Mr. Banks director John Lee Hancock Saving Mr. Banks in theatres now, chronicles Walt Disney’s work – and struggles – to adapt the “Mary Poppins” books for the big screen. Disney is an important figure in Missouri’s landscape of famous faces. He spent a formative part of his childhood in Marceline and later lived and worked in Kansas City. It was in Marceline, a small community in northwest Missouri, where Disney learned to draw and became fascinated with trains (some 70 trains still pass through town each day). Although he lived in Marceline for just four years, the city was etched in Disney’s memory. Marceline served as the model for Main Street USA at Disneyland, and to this day, sweet-seekers at the amusement park find their fill at a shop named Marceline’s Confectionery. Also, Disney had a significant impact on Marceline. After his rise to fame, Disney returned on several occasions and Marceline embraced its favorite son. Disney’s life is commemorated at the Walt Disney Hometown Museum in Marceline, while the city’s post office and elementary school bear his name. -

Finn Ballard: No Trespassing: the Post-Millennial
Page 15 No Trespassing: The postmillennial roadhorror movie Finn Ballard Since the turn of the century, there has been released throughout America and Europe a spate of films unified by the same basic plotline: a group of teenagers go roadtripping into the wilderness, and are summarily slaughtered by locals. These films may collectively be termed ‘roadhorror’, due to their blurring of the aesthetic of the road movie with the tension and gore of horror cinema. The thematic of this subgenre has long been established in fiction; from the earliest oral lore, there has been evident a preoccupation with the potential terror of inadvertently trespassing into a hostile environment. This was a particular concern of the folkloric Warnmärchen or ‘warning tale’ of medieval Europe, which educated both children and adults of the dangers of straying into the wilderness. Pioneers carried such tales to the fledging United States, but in a nation conceptualised by progress, by the shining of light upon darkness and the pushing back of frontiers, the fear of the wilderness was diminished in impact. In more recent history, the development of the automobile consolidated the joint American traditions of mobility and discovery, as the leisure activity of the road trip became popular. The wilderness therefore became a source of fascination rather than fear, and the road trip became a transcendental voyage of discovery and of escape from the urban, made fashionable by writers such as Jack Kerouac and by those filmmakers such as Dennis Hopper ( Easy Rider, 1969) who influenced the evolution of the American road movie. -

The Perfect Planet Trailer
Top Tips: 1. Read the questions carefully. 2. Use a highlighter or your pencil to underline the relevant information from the text. 3. Answer the questions in full sentences unless you need to copy individual words. The Perfect Planet Trailer This is a perfect planet. Life flourishes here thanks to powerful natural forces. Light from the sun reaches us in just eight minutes, powering our living world and its daily and yearly rhythms shape the lives of every creature on Earth. Volcanoes are powerful and uncontrollable forces, but they are the architects of the planet, creating over 80 of the Earth's surface. Life could not exist without them. Our oceans are in constant motion. They're linked by a network of powerful currents that carry nutrients around the globe. Every drop of sea water rides these currents taking a thousand years to complete a single circuit. And where there are currents there is life. From mighty storms to freezing winds, weather is vital to life. Rain clouds form and powerful winds carry this fresh water around the globe revitalizing the land. Annual weather patterns have been stable for thousands of years and it's this reliability on which life depends. Together these forces have shaped our perfect planet. But it's a fragile system. Today there is a new force one so powerful it threatens life on Earth. Human activity is now so dominant that it's disrupting the forces of nature and the vital habitats life needs to survive on Earth. To preserve our planet, we need to act now. -

The events were part of a joint 2018-19 research project called Song lines on the road – Life lines on the move! (On the Road for short) that sought to share two independent strands of longitudinal, co-produced, arts-based research in which we have developed approaches aimed at amplifying how living knowledge flows on in communities even when the shocks and intensities of lived experience defy articulation and representation. -
BRIAN DUFFY Chef/Culinary Personality
BRIAN DUFFY Chef/Culinary Personality Born and raised in Philadelphia, PA, Chef Brian Duffy had his first experiences in the kitchen as a young child with his big Irish-Italian Family. Those experiences introduced him to culinary life and led him to study at Philadelphia’s The Restaurant School at Walnut Hill College. Culinary school may have taught him technique, but it was those Sunday nights cooking with his family where he developed his passion. After graduation, Chef Duffy worked under James Beard Award winning Chef Jean Marie LaCroix at The Four Seasons in Philadelphia. From there, he partnered in opening Kristopher’s, a BYOB concept that received widespread critical acclaim. It was through opening his own brick and mortar that Duffy began to realize his flair for refined, modernized Irish pub fare and coined the term “New Celtic” cuisine. Duffy brought his “New Celtic” point of view to the Dave Magrogan Group as their Corporate Executive Chef for their brands: Doc Magrogan’s Oyster House, Harvest Season Grill and Kildare’s Irish Pubs. Following his successful tenure with Dave Magrogan Group, Duffy joined forces with Seafood American as a consultant and Executive Chef, where he developed fresh and frozen products for grocery chains across the world. Duffy is perhaps most recognized from his abundant television appearances on the wildly popular Spike TV series Bar Rescue, where he tours the country (sometimes on his Harley Davidson) reforming failing bars and restaurants with his “tell it like it is” style. He made his on-camera debut on the Food Network series Date Plate and has appeared on countless segments on the DIY Network, HGTV, NBC, and Fine Living Network. -

Future of Public Service Media: Open University Response Summary
Ofcom – Future of Public Service Media: Open University Response Summary 1. Education is a crucial part of the Public Service Broadcasting (PSB) requirements. Several of the statutory requirements set out in Section 264 of the Communications Act 2003 relate to educational objectives. There are opportunities to strengthen these requirements as part of the new Public Service Media (PSM) offer. 2. The partnership co-produces high-quality factual content across several channels and platforms, which is developed in collaboration with academic experts and closely linked to related educational materials hosted by the OU. A key objective of the partnership is to encourage people to embark on learning journeys from the informal, factual content produced with the BBC, through online and printed educational resources which enhance and enrich their broadcast/digital experience, to taking up formal learning opportunites inspired by watching, listening to and engaging with the content produced as part of the partnership. 3. In 2019/20: • A total of 257 hours of content produced via the OU/BBC partnership was broadcast by the BBC. • This resulted in a combined total of 308 million viewing/listening “events” and digital engagement interactions. • The three most popular television programmes broadcast – A Perfect Planet, Springwatch and Hospital (Series 5) all saw viewing figures in excess of 22 million. • There were 765,000 unique visitors to the online educational content related to the OU/BBC partnership hosted on the OU’s free online learning platform, OpenLearn. -
