American Archaeologists in Turkey: Intellectual and Social Dimensions Charles Gates A standard Turkish concept about archaeology, one attested by my students, (Note 1) is that Turkey is exceptionally rich in archaeological remains and, as a result, foreigners naturally want to work here. But the world is full of archaeological remains, even North America. The reasons why American and other foreign archaeologists might choose to undertake research in Turkey instead of in other countries are more complex than the Turkish public generally realizes. In this article I examine the motives of American archaeologists who have worked in Turkey. What they have found will be less important than why they came here in the first place. Aspects of the problem include the academic/intellectual framework into which the archaeology of Turkey fits in the United States, socio-political factors, and changes through time. American archaeology in Turkey is seen to be a component of US social and intellectual history, but it is a part of the social and intellectual history of Turkey as well. (Note 2) Archaeology in Turkey can be divided into three major periods: Pre-Classical, Classical (Greek and Roman), and Medieval-Modern (Byzantine, Seljuk, and Ottoman). This article is concerned with the American activities in the first two, the third having rarely been the primary focus of archaeological work except when the architectural history of specific buildings is under investigation. One further restriction: I shall concentrate on work done within the borders of the Turkish Republic of today, making only passing reference to research in adjacent areas once held by the Ottoman Empire. -

Elizabeth Pierce Blegen (1888-1966 by Elizabeth Langridge-Noti American Classical archaeologist Elizabeth Denny Pierce was born in Allegheny, Pennsylvania on June 26, 1888 to Flora McKnight and her husband William Lemmex Pierce. Elizabeth attended Vassar College from 1906-1910, where she developed a love for the Classical world and continued through 1912 to receive an M A in Latin. A number of women at Vassar served as role models for her interest in the Classics and encouraged her to pursue this line of study. The most important of these women was to become her lifelong companion, Ida Thallon (Hill) (q.v.), who was credited by Elizabeth with introducing her to Greek archaeology and to many of the classicists and archaeologists who formed part of this community. Another influence at Vassar was Elizabeth Hazelton Haight, a feminist classicist who focused on the Roman world and pushed forward the role of women in the Classics in a number of ways, being the first woman to serve on the board of the American School of Classical Studies at Rome and the first woman chair of the American Philological Association. Other professors and later colleagues who influenced Elizabeth’s intellectual development were Grace Harriet Macurdy (q.v.) and Catherine Saunders, both of the Vassar Classics department. From 1912 to 1915 Elizabeth Pierce did further graduate work at Columbia University, possibly because Ida Thallon had done so, obtaining her Ph.D. in 1922. While there, she taught at her alma mater, Vassar College, from 1915 to 1922 in the field of Art History and also served as assistant curator in the school’s Art Gallery for seven years. -

CYRUS ADLER A Biographical Sketch By ABRAHAM A. NEUMAN I POPULAR imagination often creates legends about the lives of great personalities. These legends are not whimsical fancies. They are the language of folk psychology. They reveal the traits of character in the heroes which fascinated the popular mind. In Jewish literature the legends usually cluster around the birth of its great characters. Strange omens or miracles are associated with the time or place of the hero's birth that seem to forecast the destiny of the life that follows. At times, Fate anticipates legend. It operates with true facts to produce the effect of legendary symbolism. Such is the impression created by the simple record that Cyrus Adler was born in Van Buren, Arkansas, on September 13, 1863. A small town in a border-line state between the North and the South, Van Buren, Adler's birthplace, may be said to have typified a normal American community. During the Civil War, it formed a battleground for the opposing armies. It experienced in full measure the tragic sacrifices of the struggle which was destined to end in a new cove- nant of union and freedom in America. The time and place were ideally propitious for the rise of a character to whom patriotism and freedom were the essence of religion, to whom the ideal of union had a profoundly mystic appeal, whether it was political union to preserve the republic or religious unity to preserve the faith into which he was born. A restless spirit and a mood of adventure impelled Samuel Adler, the father of Cyrus, as a young immigrant lad from Mannheim, Germany, to strike out for far-off Van Buren in Arkansas. -

Ida Thallon Hill (1875-1954) by Natalia Vogeikoff The Early Years A life committed to archaeology, especially the archaeology of Greece, began in Brooklyn, New York. Ida Carleton Thallon was born on August 11, 1875, one of the two daughters of John and Grace Green Thallon. From Packer Collegiate Institute she moved to Vassar College, where she received her A.B. degree in 1897. Two years later she set sail for Europe to attend the program of the American School of Classical Studies in Athens. On this trip, she was accompanied by another Vassar graduate, Lida Shaw King. After three months of touring in Holland, Germany, and Austria, visiting museums and learning German, the two women finally reached Greece. The two years spent in Greece had a tremendous effect on Ida Thallon’s scholarly career. In addition to the stimulating academic program of the American School, she praised the lectures of William Dőrpfeld, a leading German archaeologist of the day1 , Students were expected to attend Dőrpfeld’s lectures on the topography of Athens and participate in his tours of the Peloponnese and the islands. She also benefited from conversations with fellow student Harriet Boyd (q.v. Breaking Ground). The impact of both these figures on Thallon’s subsequent commitment to archaeology should not be underestimated. Rufus Richardson was then the Director of the School and he was very popular with the students because he took much interest in them. Also on the faculty were Professor H. W. Smyth of Bryn Mawr as the Annual Visiting Professor, who was the author of the widely used Greek Grammar, and also Dr. -

Archaeology and Philology: The Dirt and the Word Emily Vermeule Harvard University Ladies and gentlemen, friends and fellows, jokers of the American Philological Association and colleagues of the Archaeological Institute of America, You APA members perpetrated a cosmic joke in electing a Bronze Age archaeologist as your president. Why did you do it, when you could have had a much more eligible philosopher or literary person? You have caused me a deal of trouble, especially in finding words for tonight. I have heard many APA presidential addresses, most of them excellent; this will be distinguished from all others in having no discernible content. As Jane Austen once put it, "Mary wished to say something sensible, but knew not how." Still, I may say, you have also given me a deal of pleasure, in relating to people like William Ziobro and Robert Kaster who have brought stability and good will into my life. The Dirt and the Word: that is the kind of unmeaning opposition in a title, perhaps intended to evoke the AIA and the APA, sent in when a request for a title is overdue and when nothing has been thought about or written yet. But let me see what I can do to solidify this foolish contrast. The Dirt: it supports us; we walk on it, it feeds us with crops and fruits; our neighbors the animals seek shelter from us killers across it; it also hides us and our brief doings when we are gone. It is our life first, our death later. The Word: it separates us from the animals, or so we say in our present arrogant ignorance; it allows us to express our own inestimable creative value to ourselves; we put it in the mouth of God, and it marks a sense of our origins; it encourages us to create imaginary impalpable worlds and to control them like gods ourselves; it is our protection against death, for the Word will outlive us if we use it rightly and well and memorably. -

Con- versely, it is fraught with meaning and conditioning powers, enabling and constrain- ing imagination and practical life. In this essay I tease out the hold that the idea of Hellas has had on post-war Greece and I explore the ways in which the American anti-communist rhetoric and discussions about political and economic stabilization appropriated and rearticulated Hellenism.
