Keesep Book 1 Ends with a Bang THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 2016 BOOK 1: STRONG FINISH KEESEP BOOK 1 ENDS by Bill Oppenheim WITH A BANG In our column of August 24 (click here), we postulated that if 60% of the 607 yearlings catalogued in Keeneland September Book 1 sold for an average of $300,000--approximately the Book 1 average in 2014-2015--our target for the Book 1 gross was $111-million. As there were 117 fewer yearlings (16%) catalogued in Book 1, we were projecting a $23-million decline in the Book 1 gross. After the first two days--$34.5-million for 108 sold Monday and $38-million for 119 sold on Tuesday, for a two-day average of $319,000, and one seven-figure yearling each day B it looked like the $111-million figure was likely to be close to the mark. Then came Wednesday--whole different sale. AWe talked about stable the first day,@ Keeneland=s Vice President of Racing and Sales Bob Elliston said. AI think you can probably throw that out the window. This was a dynamite day.@ During Wednesday=s session, 119 yearlings sold for $47,735,000. The average, which was around $319,000 during the first two sessions, jumped to $401,134 Wednesday, a 29.55% increase from the final session of last year=s Book 1. The median for the day was up 20% to $300,000. For the three sessions of Book 1, 346 yearlings sold for $120,225,000. The cumulative average of $347,471 was up 14.56% and the median rose 20% to $300,000. AI personally found that the best horses were in today=s session, so it wasn=t any surprise to me that this would be the strongest session. The first day of a select sale is always the most temperate day and it=s just gathered momentum.@ Three Chimneys Farm bred or co-bred three of the million- dollar yearlings to sell Wednesday and the farm=s Goncalo Torrealba noticed a difference in the market during the Book 1 finale. AThe first two days were a lot softer,@ Torrealba said. AToday is a whole different day. Today they are bringing what I thought they should. WEDNESDAY, JUNE 22, 2016 PLETCHER JUVENILES SARATOGA BOUND >MOON= ON THE RISE, >ICE= by Ben Massam ON THE COMEBACK TRAIL Some two months into the 2-year-old racing season, seven-time Eclipse Award winner Todd Pletcher has already established his customary position at the fore of the training ranks, with two juvenile stakes wins and a number of other promising prospects. Pletcher=s barn was firing on all cylinders this past weekend, sending out three maiden graduates in the span of three hours at Belmont Park and Monmouth Park, Saturday. Pletcher kicked off the action with a rallying score by Bronson (Medaglia d=Oro) in a five-furlong maiden event at the Jersey Shore [video]. Given that the colt=s pedigree leans toward longer-distance races and turf--including his MGSW dam Cambiocorsa (Avenue of Flags)--Pletcher said that he was pleased to see his charge win at first asking on dirt. The Irish Champion is one of three Challenge races at Leopardstown and highlights a weekend that features 10 total “Win and You’re In” races, including the prestigious Ricoh Woodbine Mile (GI) Sunday. The connections of both Coolmore’s Gleneagles and Anthony Oppenheimer’s Golden Horn, the pair of 3-year-old standouts are expected to meet in the 1 ¼-mile race after the latter withdrew from a potential clash in the “Win and You’re In” Juddmonte International (GI) at York August 19 due to the soft turf.

  • Spring Magazine 2021 Introduction P Ark House Stables Amb
P ARK HOUSE STABLES SPRING MAGAZINE 2021 INTRODUCTION P ARK HOUSE STABLES AMB t is hard to believe that twelve months have passed since we first entered a COVID-19 lockdown. 2020 is a year that few people will want to Iremember, with hardships for so many. There is, however, light at the end of the tunnel, and as spring approaches and more people are vaccinated perhaps it is time to start believing that this summer might resemble something we probably all took for granted in pre-COVID years. Never again will I complain about not finding a parking space at the racecourse or having to queue for a coffee in the Owners & Trainers bar! With the prospect of normality approaching we have embarked upon some exciting new projects for the coming season. With our absolute priority remaining to achieve the best and safest working surfaces for the horses we have replaced the Side Glance gallop with an Activetrack surface from Martin Collins. This has already proved to be a huge success, as has the building of an arena to help with the re-training of a small selection of retired racehorses at Kingsclere and to give a further training option for BOUNCE THE BLUES gleaming in the winter sun as she heads out to exercise horses who need a change from the gallops. I am delighted to report the renewal of the King Power sponsorship of Front cover: Reunited – ARCTIC VEGA and devoted groom the yard for 2021, and with this support we have been anxious to improve Shelby Joubert the facilities for our human residents as well as the equine ones.
