The Last Pope is a term which is associated with the prophecies of St Malachy. These prophecies are in no way considered to be an inspired biblical text yet today it seems to have drawn even the most conservative of bible and secular prophecy scholars into the debate that their could be some relevance behind these predictions. For those of you who may not be familiar with this subject, the prophecy of St Malachy is based on medieval text which seems to have correctly predicted the succession of popes from medieval times up until the present pope. -

Abstract Jesus, Jung, and the Charismatics: The Pecos Benedictines and Visions of Religious Renewal Kody Sherman Jackson, M.A. The University of Texas at Austin, 2016 Supervisor: Robert Abzug The Catholic Charismatic Renewal, though changing the face and feel of U.S. Catholicism, has received relatively little scholarly attention. Beginning in 1967 and peaking in the mid-1970s, the Renewal brought Pentecostal practices (speaking in tongues, faith healings, prophecy, etc.) into mainstream Catholicism. This thesis seeks to explore the Renewal on the national, regional, and individual level, with particular attention to lay and religious “covenant communities.” These groups of Catholics (and sometimes Protestants) devoted themselves to spreading Pentecostal practices amongst their brethren, sponsoring retreats, authoring pamphlets, and organizing conferences. -

This year marks the 650th anniversary of the death of Bl. Bernard Tolomei, an impassioned “God-seeker” (cf. Benedictine Rule, 58:7), which this monastic congregation is joyfully preparing to celebrate. On this happy occasion, I am pleased to send you, Most Reverend Father, and the entire monastic congregation of the Olivetans my best wishes, while gladly joining in the common hymn of praise and thanksgiving to the Lord for the gift to his Church of such an important Gospel witness. By a providential coincidence, this anniversary falls in the second year of immediate preparation for the Great Jubilee of the Year 2000, the year dedicated to the Holy Spirit. The shining figure of Bl. Bernard, who established “schools of the Lord’s service” (cf. Benedictine Rule, Prol. 45), is a remarkable example of the presence and action of the Holy Spirit, the source of the great variety of charisms on which the Bride of Christ lives. In the heart of Bl. Bernard, “God’s love was poured out ... through the Holy Spirit” (cf. Rom 5:5) in abundance, and it thus made him a sign of the risen Lord. As a result, he was able to excel “in the life to which God has called him, for the increase of the holiness of the Church and for the greater glory of the one and undivided Trinity” (Dogm. Const. Remember that recently the Lord showed Peter in a dream to watch for March/April and October/November this year. Already we are seeing events of major significance to take place during these periods of time. This past Monday, February 11th, Pope Benedict XVI made the shocking announcement of his resignation due to his deteriorating health. Peter told me first thing that day and I immediately began to put together a teaching about Saint Malachy’s Last Pope Prophecy. 1 At the same time, the internet took off with this story because people who know about this prophecy immediately reacted as I did to the pope’s announcement of his resignation. This is the first time in 600 years that a pope has resigned. His last day in office will be February 28th and a conclave to elect the new pope is planned for mid-March. -

1 The Labyrinth at Chartres, the Malachy Prophecy, and Benedict XVI (Copyright 2013) Prologue The thing to be kept in mind when dealing with symbolism and trying to understand what it may mean in the context of the tradition within which it is considered, is that what matters are the beliefs and practices of the participants in that tradition, their frame of mind, their point of view, the way they perceive and interpret what happens from within their tradition, not what an “objective observer” might perceive, conceive, or deceive himself with from without that tradition. It is in that optic that we shall look at the prediction of the prophecy and the highly symbolic nature of the timing of both the announcement of the resignation of Benedict XVI and the effective date of that resignation.1 1. The Chartres Labyrinth and the Malachy Prophecy Saint Malachy (1094-1148) was Archbishop of Armagh in Ireland and is remembered for his reform and reorganization of the Irish church which he brought in obedience to Rome. He was canonized by Pope Clement III in 1190. Viliam Judák Dear friends, Despite of having long-term experience in publishing in other areas, through the AXIS MEDIA company I have for the first time entered the environment of medal production. There have been several reasons for this decision. The topic going beyond the borders of not only Slovakia but the ones of Europe as well. The genuine work of the academic sculptress Ľudmila Cvengrošová, an admirable and nice artist. The fine text by the Bishop Viliam Judák. The “Popes in history” edition in this range is a unique work in the world. It proves our potential to offer a work eliminating borders through its mission. Literally and metaphorically, too. The fabulous processing of noble metals and miniatures produced with the smallest details possible will for sure attract the interest of antiquarians but also of those interested in this topic. Although this is a limited edition I am convinced that it will be provided to everybody who wants to commemorate significant part of the historical continuity and Christian civilization. I am pleased to have become part of this unique project, and I believe that whether the medals or this lovely book will present a good message on us in the world and on the world in us. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. _______________________________ Kate Jordan !2 Abstract Over the last forty years, feminist discourses have made considerable impact on the way that we understand women’s historical agency. Linda Nochlin’s question, ‘why have there been no great women artists’ challenged assumptions about the way we consider women in art history and Amanda Vickery brought to the fore questions of women’s authority within ‘separate spheres’ ideology. The paucity of research on women’s historical contributions to architecture, however, is a gap that misrepresents their significant roles. This thesis explores a hitherto overlooked group of buildings designed by and for women; nineteenth and twentieth century English convents. Many of these sites were built according to the rules of communities whose ministries extended beyond contemplative prayer and into the wider community, requiring spaces that allowed lay-women to live and work within the convent walls but without disrupting the real and imagined fabric of monastic traditions - spaces that were able to synthesise contemporary domestic, industrial and institutional architecture with the medieval cloister. The demanding specifications for these highly innovative and complex spaces were drawn up, overwhelmingly, by nuns. While convents might be read as spaces which operated at the interstices between different architectures, I will argue they were instead conceived as sites that per- formed varying and contradictory functions simultaneously. -

On Sunday 5 January 1964, he visited the Basilica of the Annunciation in Nazareth and declared: Nazareth is the school of initiation into the understanding of the life of Jesus. It is the school of the gospel. Here one learns to observe, to listen, to meditate, to penetrate into the profound and mysterious meaning of that simple, humble, lovely apparition of God among men. Here one learns almost imperceptibly to imitate Him. Here one learns the way by which we can enter into the under- standing of Christ. Here one understands the need of observing the setting of His dealings with us: the places, the time, the customs, the language, the religious atmosphere — all of which Jesus used to reveal Himself to the world. Introduction The unpopular English Catholic Queen, Mary Tudor died in 1558 after a brief reign during which she earned the epithet ‘Bloody Mary’ for her persecution of Protestants. Mary’s Protestant younger sister succeeded her as Queen Elizabeth I. In 1559, during the first year of Elizabeth’s reign, Parliament passed the Act of Uniformity, declaring the state-run Church of England as the only legitimate religious authority, and compulsory for all citizens. -

Abstract Early sixteenth century radical Anabaptism emanated in Switzerland during Huldrych Zwingli’s protest against the Roman Catholic Church. Much like Martin Luther, Zwingli founded his reform effort on the Bible being the final arbiter of the faith, sola scriptura, and the sufficiency of the shed blood of Christ plus nothing for eternal salvation, sola fide. Based on these principles both adopted the doctrine of the Priesthood of the Believer which recognized every believer’s Spirit empowered ability to read and interpret the Bible for themselves. These initial theological tenets resulted in the literal reading of the Bible and a very pragmatic Christian praxis including a Pauline pneumatology that recognized the efficacy of the manifestation of the charismata. Radical adherents of Zwingli rejected infant baptism as being totally unbiblical and insisted upon the rebaptism of adults, but only on a personal confession of faith, thus the term Anabaptist. -
Carlo Murena
Carlo Murena Italian architect of the late-Baroque period (1713-1764) He was born in the Collalto fortress (today Collalto Sabino) on 16 July 1713 by Giuseppe and Dorotea Rolli. He initially devoted himself to humanistic studies, which he later abandoned to deal with architecture, probably following the meeting with Nicola Salvi, in whose studio, in Rome, he began to work as an architect. The date of his arrival in the City is not known exactly, but it can be considered to be due to the period in which he began his apprenticeship at Salvi. His stay in the papal city proved to be advantageous for his career so much that, already in the thirties, he appeared alongside Luigi Vanvitelli. The collaboration probably began between 1737 and 1738: according to sources, Murena was placed, thanks to his protector, Cardinal Francesco Barberini Jr., Under the direction of Vanvitelli at the time when the latter "built the Lazzaretto of Ancona". From 1739 his name appears constantly alongside that of Vanvitelli, whose design inventions proved to be a faithful interpreter from the beginning of his architectural activity: he participated in the construction of the convent of Montemorcino (1739-63), near Perugia, covering, in specific, the role of director of the works and, in 1740, was commissioned by the Olivetans to design the ornaments of the chapels of the church annexed to the monastery of S. Maria in Campis near Foligno. Starting from the fifth decade of the eighteenth century it was active both in Rome and outside. His presence in Fiumicino has been documented since 1740, where he mainly dealt with the maintenance of "passonate", but also with more complex hydraulic problems; in 1751 he replaced Vanvitelli for all purposes.
