Who of us cannot relate to the poor Canaanite woman. Her daughter is being tormented by a demon and Jesus ignores her, his disciples ask him to send her away, Jesus dismisses her. Can you imagine how she must have felt? Have you ever felt that way? Have you ever felt ignored when you plea for help? Have you ever felt that either God isn’t listening or doesn’t care or perhaps is either unwilling or unable to help us? Still that woman perseveres. And in the end ... she is rewarded for her faith by the Lord. Her daughter was healed. Perseverance is a wonderful and powerful virtue. In Romans 12:12, our patron, St. Paul, exhorts us to “Rejoice in hope, endure in affliction, persevere in prayer.” I believe that God always hears our prayers. Sometimes, He delays his response to teach us perseverance. Other times, the answer is immediate. Sometimes, the answer is yes. Other times, no. Sometimes ... He has something even more wondrous in store for us. But I am convinced that God always, always hears our prayers. I wonder if the Lord is trying to teach us perseverance as we pray for a cure for the ills which year! May God fill them with His Spirit of Wisdom! afflict our nation and our world. This is the shortest of all New Testament gospels and it is likely the first to have been written. This book often tells of Jesus’ ministry in more detail than either Matthew or Luke. St. Mark stresses Jesus’ message about the kingdom of God now breaking into human life as good news. Jesus is the Son whom God has sent to rescue humanity by serving and by sacrificing his life.
