Division 1

The season started once again with the defending champions Fishguard Sports leading the way winning their first 6 games. Monkton Swifts weren’t far behind them recording 5 straight wins, although their winning streak ended with a 1-0 defeat away to Milford United (Graham Davies). Fishguard remained unbeaten for another 6 games although during this period they drew 4 consecutive games, including a 1-1 draw against the Swifts where Gethin Griffiths scored for the Sports, with Charlie Evans equalising for the Swifts from the penalty spot.

The Sports finally lost their unbeaten record the Saturday before Christmas when they lost 3- 0 at Hakin United. Goalscorers for Hakin were Philip Jones, Dai Goffin and Keith Johnston although the game was slightly marred at the end with a sending off for each side.

At the end of December the league table looked as follows:

Pos Team P W D L F A Pts 1 Fishguard Sports 14 9 4 1 52 28 22 2 Monkton Swifts 13 9 3 1 42 17 21 3 Merlins Bridge 15 9 3 3 48 32 21 4 Solva 15 6 6 3 39 24 18 5 Carew 14 7 4 3 35 32 18 6 Hakin United 13 5 6 2 29 16 16 7 Narberth 15 7 2 6 32 29 16 8 Pendine P & EE 17 5 5 7 39 47 15 9 Milford United 15 7 0 8 23 22 14 10 Goodwick United 14 5 2 7 30 35 12 11 Kilgetty 15 4 3 8 31 43 11 12 Milford Athletic 16 4 1 11 33 54 9 13 New Hedges 14 3 2 9 29 44 8 14 Pembroke Boro 16 1 3 12 21 60 5

January saw the top two maintain their good form though on the 24/1/76 Fishguard Sports travelled to Carew and suffered their heaviest defeat for many a season, 6-2. Carew led 4-2 at half time thanks to goals from Graham Jenkins, Mike Allen, Richard Hughes and Peter James, with Eddie Merry and Alwyn Howells scoring for the Sports. However second half goals from David Sefton and Peter Hall gave Carew a famous win whilst also reviving their diminishing championship hopes.

This put Monkton Swifts in pole position and seven consecutive wins, including a 4-3 away success against Milford Athletic after trailing 0-3. Roy Davies (2), David Dickinson, and Charlie Evans scored for the Swifts with Jim Harteveld, Ernie Sturley and Mike Harteveld replying for the Athletic.

As at the 13 th March the top of the table looked as follows:

Pos Team P W D L F A Pts 1 Monkton Swifts 20 16 3 1 68 27 35 2 Fishguard Sports 20 13 5 2 79 40 31 3 Carew 20 12 4 4 59 39 28 4 Merlins Bridge 20 12 3 5 61 40 27

In their next four games the Swifts dropped two points drawing 1-1 against Solva (Charlie Evans/Taffy Walsh) and Hakin United (Archie James/David Einham). They also completed the double over Narberth 3-0 at home and 1-0 away.

In the same period Fishguard were also held to a 2-2 draw by Hakin United (Arwyn Howells &/Mike Robb/Tony Newton & Phillip Jones) though they had convincing wins over Kilgetty (7-3 including three from Eddie Merry), Milford United (4-1 with another Eddie Merry hat- trick ) and New Hedges (11-2).

This meant that with two games left the Swifts lead had been cut to 3 points though they were still in pole position. Both sides had to face 3 rd placed Merlins Bridge and also faced a crunch head to head against each other.

In the first of these fixtures the Swifts travelled to Merlins Bridge and suffered a 4-3 defeat. Their next fixture saw them entertain Fishguard Sports and again they tasted defeat, this time 1-0 to a Mike Robb goal.

This left Fishguard, for the third consecutive season, needing to win their last match to be crowned champions. This they did with a 3-0 home success over the Merlins Bridge thus depriving Monkton Swifts of a championship that was there for their taking.

Pos Team P W D L F A GD Pts 1 Fishguard Sports 26 18 6 2 107 48 59 42 2 Monkton Swifts 26 18 5 3 77 34 43 41 3 Carew 26 16 5 5 80 51 29 37 4 Merlins Bridge 26 17 3 6 78 52 26 37 5 Hakin United 26 11 11 4 65 35 30 33 6 Solva 26 11 10 5 68 41 27 32 7 Narberth 26 10 3 13 53 55 -2 23 8 Milford United 26 10 1 15 38 49 -11 21 9 Goodwick United 26 7 6 13 47 65 -18 20 10 Kilgetty 26 8 4 14 51 74 -23 20 11 Pendine P & EE 26 7 6 13 58 86 -28 20 12 Milford Athletic 26 6 4 16 57 83 -26 16 13 New Hedges 26 3 6 17 51 93 -42 12 14 Pembroke Boro 26 3 4 19 37 101 -64 10

Game of the season was undoubtedly the 5-5 relegation battle between New Hedges (13 th ) and Milford Athletic (12 th ) on 20 th March. Before kick off the Athletic held a 2 point lead over New Hedges who had three games in hand. The Athletic led 4-1 at half time though a fine comeback from the home side earned them a point. Steve Flook, Richard Eastlake, Alan Brindley (2) and Alan Rees scored for the home team with Fred Garton (3), Ray Rogers, and Ernie Sturley scoring for the visitors.

In their next game the Athletic gained a crucial 3-0 win over Carew thanks to two Fred Garton goals and Mark Rodriguez. New Hedges lost their next 4 games, and with Pembroke Boro only picking up 1 point in their last 4 games the relegation issue was decided by the middle of April.

So Fishguard Sports retained their title for the 5 th season in a row, though Monkton Swifts must have felt that the title was theirs having gone on an 18 match unbeaten run between 1/11 and 13/4. However the two defeats at the very end were to prove costly. Fishguard Sports on the other hand remained unbeaten in their last 10 games winning 8 of them.

Some of the leading scorers during the season were Ken Harries (14), Eddie Merry (19) & Mike Robb (20) (Fishguard Sports), Charlie Evans (25) (Monkton Swifts), Graham Jenkins (19) (Carew), Roy Fairhurst (22) & Alan Pearce (12) (Merlins Bridge) Keith Johnston (17) & Phillip Jones (13) (Hakin United), and Sean Roche (13) (Goodwick United). The figures in brackets are the minimum number of league goals scored and would probably been greater if all goal scorers were available.

Division 2

In the Second division it was two second teams who ended up fighting for the championship namely Solva II and Fishguard Sports II, although Neyland promoted from division 3 in the previous season were well in contention up until the last two games

At the end of December the top of the table looked as follows:

Pos Team P W D L F A GD Pts 1 Fishguard Sports II 14 11 2 1 67 26 41 24 2 Neyland 16 10 3 3 51 31 20 23 3 Solva II 14 9 3 2 42 12 30 21 4 MHPC 15 8 4 3 44 29 15 20 5 St Ishmaels 16 8 2 6 47 45 2 18 6 Pennar Robins 13 7 3 3 26 19 7 17

Fishguard’s only defeat had come 3-2 away at St Ishmaels where Alan Proctor, Keith Pawlett and Martin Davies had netted for the home side. They had however recorded some fine victories along the way including a 5-3 home success against Neyland. Keith Swales, Arwyn Howells (2), Charlie Howells and David Evans netted their goals and they even could afford the luxury of Sean O’Connor missing a penalty. Jim Burton, Jeff Button and Mike Davies had scored for the visitors who at one stage had led 3-2.

For the next three months the only point dropped by any of the top 3 was by Fishguard II who dropped a point at home to St Clears with a 1-1. Thus at the 3 rd April the top of the table was as follows:

Pos Team P W D L F A GD Pts 1 Neyland 22 16 3 3 83 42 41 35 2 Solva II 20 15 3 2 73 14 59 33 3 Fishguard Sports II 19 15 3 1 83 30 53 33

On the 12/4 Fishguard ended Neyland’s title hopes with a 4-3 away success, and then they recorded convincing wins over Pennar Robins (5-0) and St Ishmaels (6-1). Solva responded with a narrow 1-0 win away at Narberth and they then trounced Neyland at home 6-0 thanks to a hat-trick from Barry Smith and one a piece from Brian Morris, Adrian Richards and Bryn Price.

Thus with two back to back games against each other, Fishguard Sports II led the table by two points. In the first game at Fishguard the score ended 1-1 and thus it was all to play for at Solva in the final game. The homesters won the game 1-0 thanks to a Nigel Phillips goal and ended up being crowned champions by having a better goal average. This was helped by having conceded only 15 goals all season.

Game of the season was on 18/10/75 between MHPC and Fishguard Sports II where there were 10 different goalscorers in a 5-5 draw. Roger Blackmore, Dom Giannuzzi, Jimmy Thomas (penalty), Terry Langdon and Robert Lehman scored for the oilmen, with Charlie Howells, Keith Swales, Brian Robb, Kenny Broaders and a last minute penalty from Sean O’Connor scoring for the Sports.

Division 3

In Division 3 RAF Brawdy started as hot favourites having won 13 consecutive games at the end of the previous season, and they lived up to their ranking by winning a further 13 games at the beginning of this season and only dropping 3 points in total all season. They went top in the middle of October following a 6-0 thrashing of Monkton Swifts II, who were eventually to finish as runners-up, where Jeff Card (3), Chris Kirkup (2) and John Fleming scored the goals. They scored an incredible 186 goals in the season, hitting double figures on 7 occasions and averaging nearly 8 goals per game. Their biggest success was 24-0 against Pembroke Power Station where Chris Hardy (7), John Fleming (5), Mike Kelly (3), Mike Colloff (2), Peter Herbert (2), Jeff Card (2), Chris Kirkup, Joe Watts and “Scouse” Harries were the scorers. They also scored 19 goals without reply against Neyland II, where Steve Allen, making his league debut, scored 12 goals! Chris Hardy (2), John Fleming (3) and one a piece from Chris Kirkup and goalkeeper Roger Gay, completed the scoring.

Their one defeat came at Monkton against the Swifts II where goals from Danny Thomas, Lyn Smith and Peter Hillings gave the homesters a 3-0 success. The only other team in with a realistic chance of promotion were Johnston, but a 6-0 nil defeat at the hands of the airmen at the end of March ended their hopes and handed the runners up spot to Monkton Swifts II.

Senior Cup

The first round of the Senior Cup saw one major shock and one humdinger of a tie. The shock came at Johnston where the third division side accounted for first division Solva. The visitors had led 2-1 thanks to goals from Tim Green and Taffy Walsh, with Charlie Edwards replying for Johnston. However second half goals from Phil Harries and a goal 5 minutes from time by Charlie Edwards gave the homesters a famous victory.

The humdinger of a tie was at Merlins Bridge where they entertained Hakin United. Roy Fairhurst (2) and Mario Rabaiotti had given the Bridge a 3-2 half time lead with Phil Jones and Keith Johnston replying for Hakin. Fairhurst then put the Bridge 4-2 up only to see Billy McCarthy pull one back. Rabaiotti and Fairhurst then put the Bridge in a commanding 6-3 position but their visitors refused to lie down and Jones and Roy Dawes reduced the lead to one goal, resulting in a final 6-5 score line.

The second round saw two further shocks, the biggest being at Neyland where the home side defeated the mighty Fishguard Sports 4-1. The Sports had gone into a 1-0 lead thanks to an Arwyn Howells goal but Mike Lampard had equalised before half time. However second half goals from Simon James (2) and Peter Burton saw Fishguard suffer only their second defeat in 5 years in the competition, having been to the previous 4 finals, winning three and losing one.

The other shock saw Johnston once again defeat first division opposition, this time winning at Narberth 2-1. Wyn Davies had given Narberth a first half lead that was wiped out by Charlie Edwards after 60 minutes. Then with 7 minutes to go Mick Algieri scored a rather fortuitous goal for the visitors when his shot hit a tuft of grass which totally deceived the Narberth keeper.

The quarter finals saw no real upsets with both giant killers in the previous round crashing out to 4-1 scorelines, Johnston at Merlins Bridge and Neyland to Monkton Swifts.

The semis brought together two of the top 3, with current league leaders Monkton Swifts facing 3 rd placed Carew at Bush Camp. It was the under dogs who were to win the day with goals from Dai Sefton, Peter Hall and a last minute penalty from Graham Jenkins. Roy Davies had scored the solitary Swifts goal.

In the other semi Merlins Bridge easily accounted for bottom of the table Pembroke Boro 4-1 thanks to goals from Alan Pearce (3) and Mario Rabaiotti, with Bobby Bell replying for the Boro.

The final at the Bridge Meadow was a very close affair with score at full time being 0-0. Extra time was equally as tight with the deciding goal coming in the very last minute of extra time when Graham Jenkins set up David Sefton to smash the ball past Bridge keeper Benno James.

Divisional Cups

The 2nd division cup saw Solva II achieve a remarkable league and cup double when the defeated Haverfordwest County in the final at Goodwick. Match details in the local press were limited and the only information available was that Taylor had given the Bluebirds the lead, with one of the goals for Solva being an own goal from Bulley.

In the earlier rounds Fishguard Sports II had gained revenge for their first team’s senior cup defeat at the hands of Neyland by winning 3-1 at St Mary’s field in a replay. The first game had ended 1-1 with Mike Lampard scoring for Neyland and Keith Swales for the sports. In the replay Paul Hancock and Ivor Nicholas put Fishguard 2-0 up with Kelvin Townsend pulling one back for the visitors. A David Evans header from a free kick sealed the win for the home side.

The question in the Third division cup was whether anyone was good enough to stop the rampant RAF Brawdy side. They faced a tough task in the first round where they narrowly won 3-2 at Johnston despite going 1-0 down. The goals for the airmen were scored by Peter Herbert (2) and Chris Kelly, with Alan Cunningham netting both home goals.

In the next round they needed a replay to overcome Angle 2-0 and in the semi smashed New Hedges 9-1. They then faced league runners up Monkton Swifts II in the final at Marble Hall and ran out comfortable 4-0 winners.
