— So Where Are We Now?

The 2 October 2016 edition of The former home secretary Like Mr. Cameron, Mrs. May BBC News provides an excellent took over from David Cameron, was against Britain leaving the summary of where the situation who resigned on the day after EU but she says she will respect now stands. The following, and losing the referendum the will of the people. the diagram at right, are ex- cerpted from the article “Brexit: All you need to know about the UK leaving the EU.”

What does Brexit mean? It is a word that has become used as a shorthand way of say- ing the UK leaving the EU - merging the words Britain and exit to get Brexit, in a same way as a possible Greek exit from the euro was dubbed Grexit in the past.

Why is Britain leaving the Euro- pean Union? A referendum - a vote in which everyone (or nearly everyone) of voting age can take part - was held on Thursday 23 June, to decide whether the UK should leave or remain in the European Union. Leave won by 52% to 48%. The referendum turnout was 71.8%, with more than 30 million people voting.

What was the breakdown across the UK? England voted strongly for Brexit, by 53.4% to 46.6%, as did Wales, with Leave getting 52.5% of the vote and Remain 47.5%. Scotland and Northern Ireland both backed staying in the EU. Scotland backed Re- main by 62% to 38%, while 55.8% in Northern Ireland vot- ed Remain and 44.2% Leave.

What has happened since the referendum? Britain has got a new Prime Minister - Theresa May. NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2016 436-11

The Luster monographs continue this issue with the 1958 Europa stamps of Luxembourg.

Luxembourg issued three Europa stamps with the same design in 1958. They were denominat- ed 2.50 F, 3.50 F and 5 F. The 2.50 F stamp was printed in red, the 3.50 F stamp was printed in green and the 5 F stamp was printed in blue.

The stamps were designed by André van der Vossen. All three stamps depict the common de- sign. The stamps were recess printed on watermarked paper, perforated 14 x 12¾ by Joh. Enschedé en Zonen, Haarlem, in sheets of 50 stamps. 2,010,000 of the 2.50 F stamp, 692,500 of the 3.50 F and 777,500 of the 5 F stamp were printed.

The D’Urso Catalogue assigned the number 41 to the 2.50 F stamp, the number 42 to the 3.50 F stamp and the number 43 to the 5 F stamp.

In addition to the complete set of 2 stamps, the D’Urso Catalogue lists blocks of 4 stamps.

D’Urso lists a number of varieties for the stamps. For the 2.50 F the dove’s beak is broken (41A). For the 3.50 F value, the dove’s beak is also broken (42A) and a white dot under the letters “LU” in the word Luxembourg (42B). For the 5 F value, the dove’s beak is also broken (43A) also, there is a white dot over the letter “F” (43B).

First day covers were also produced for this issue. They are listed with the following cancels: “Europa Luxembourg” ((41/43C); and “Bruxelles Expo” (41/43E). A maximum card with the “Europa Luxembourg” cancel is also listed in D’Urso (41/43D).

Proof material from Luxembourg is very scarce. I ran across this photo proof on the Internet:

Here are two variations on the same maximum card. At card at the left is franked with the complete set of three Luxembourg 1958 Europa stamps. The three cards on the right are each franked with a different value of the Luxembourg set.

This is the seventh excerpt from Steve’s monograph, which concludes the stamps of Luxembourg. The next install- ment will examine the stamps of Netherlands ■ NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2016 436-18
