To take part in this grant round you must submit the application by 12 noon on the deadline date stated at the front of the application. (You will be able to expand on this information further in the following sections). Summary of proposed project: The project will provide early interventions for young people aged 11-19 who are at increased risk 84 of criminal activity, supporting them to make the right choices in life. Participants will be selected from 15 schools (6 Derby City, 8 County). targets white working-class boys and young people who are deemed to be more at risk of Achieve becoming involved in criminal and antisocial behaviours. The modular programme is designed to provide early interventions by developing key life skills. Achieve is delivered by schools in partnership with The Prince’s Trust. mentoring supports young people to fulfil their potential, raise aspirations, and improve their Mosaic confidence. Each young person receives 16 hours of in-school mentoring from relatable mentors, a ‘World of Work tour’ with local employers and a celebration event. The project will also support the development of an East Midlands Mosaic Leadership Group; a forum which brings together stakeholders (business leaders, headteachers, police and statutory organisations), facilitating greater partnership working. Evidence of need for the project: Early intervention is key to steering young people away from crime. The Derbyshire PCC Plan recognises that diversionary activities are increasingly key to “preventing young people from engaging in anti-social behaviour or criminal activities”. Derby is a ‘social mobility cold spot’ one of the Government’s Opportunity Areas. A MoJ review also found that young people from poorer backgrounds and a more chaotic family life are more likely to enter the criminal justice system. The Prince’s Trust ‘Achieve’ programme supports young people from disadvantaged communities deemed ‘more at risk’ of criminal activity. Early behavioural development-based interventions are a key driver for preventing future criminal activity, antisocial behaviour and violence (EIF, 2019). Additionally, mentoring is proven to be a good youth diversionary tool for young people (DfE, 2010). Mosaic Mentoring aims to improve the social mobility prospects of young people growing up in disadvantaged communities; over 80% of schools we work with are in the 20% most deprived areas in the UK. Who will benefit and how (clear outcomes): This project will work with 84 young people who are disproportionately affected by low social mobility and are therefore at greater risk of becoming involved in criminal activity. Mosaic has a specific focus on supporting young people from BAME backgrounds and deprived communities to fulfil their potential. Achieve primarily targets white working-class boys deemed at risk of underachievement and becoming involved in crime and antisocial behaviour. The Prince’s Trust uses ‘My Journey’ forms to track and evaluate participant’s soft outcomes at programme start, post-start (reflect) and programme end. The Trust monitors self-reported outcomes through a range of metrics including skills, interpersonal relationships, education and employability. Young people will develop: • Relationship Skills: Being a positive role model, positive contributions to society, strong personal relationships. • Skills outcomes: Communication, working with others, goal setting, confidence, reliability. • School attendance, motivation to progress to further/higher education, Education outcomes: improvement in academic grades (self-reported). • Employability outcomes: Motivation to get a job/start a career, job-search skills. Working with the Constabulary to develop the policing family to be more representative of the diverse communities it serves. 7. Working with the Constabulary and partners to maximise on the opportunities from developments in technology.
