Welcome back!

I hope you have all had a good summer break, whether it be away on holidays, additional child minding duties or just having the opportunity to chill and enjoy the garden. By now, many of you, like me, will be back enjoying your group activities, but let us not forget to support group coordinators with any administration required for your group.

Sometimes we can get stuck in a routine and this Autumn I have decided that I would like to try something new and not previously on my radar. The joy of our U3A is that we have so many opportunities to explore something new. I have been spoilt for choice when I looked at the number of groups with vacancies. I am looking forward to trying some “taster” sessions!

Some of us went to the and Humber Region Showcase Event at Askham Bryan. The weather was dry and the event was opened by Pam Jones, Chair of U3A. Our singers, led by Irene Lees and Ruth Lamb and Play Reading I led by Mike West did Sheffield proud. Also let’s not forget that the Sheffield Quizzers came second and that Chris Goldthorpe was a winner in the Raffle!

Following my request for any topics that the membership would like the EC to focus on this year (no responses!) at the meeting in July, the EC decided we would explore the following tasks:

Firstly, is there a need for the creation of a Deaf Awareness Group in our U3A? This group would not be able to resolve all issues but would focus on ensuring that we in SU3A are doing all we can practically, wherever possible, to support our members with hearing difficulties.

Secondly, Personal Safety Awareness: How safe are we as we go about our daily lives? For example, do we know what to do or even more importantly what not do if there is fire at home? Do we even have the right type of smoke alarms? We will be calling upon the services of South Yorkshire Police and Fire Services and arranging some talks if there is sufficient interest from the membership.

3 Website: www.sheffieldu3a.org.uk We will be forming working groups for both of these tasks and welcome participation from the membership. Please see page 6 for more information.

Our third task is to review our IT system, Wild Apricot, the licence for which expires next year. Many U3As in our region, indeed in the country, are migrating to the Beacon System and we in Sheffield must ensure that we are getting the best value for money and the correct system to meet our needs.

Finally, we have set up a working group to revamp our website following the very kind, free-of-charge offer from one of Sheffield University’s students, who originally came to us seeking help for his research project.

During the spring and summer, meetings have been held with Professor Yasuhito Kinoshita of Rikkyo University, Japan, and also a member of a Polish U3A based in Warsaw. Both were looking to see how SU3A has become so successful. For more details about Professor Yasuhito’s visit please see page 7.

The EC have renewed the licence for Room 50 which is used not only by the EC but also various groups. If your group is looking to hold its activities in a central location, please see page 5 for more details

We receive so many requests, 6-8 per week, for volunteers from charities and voluntary organisations that the EC, earlier this year, took the decision not to advertise requests for volunteers in Links or our website. This decision was not taken lightly as most of the requests are from very worthwhile causes. Instead the EC will have a link on the website for Voluntary Action Sheffield (VAS). This way the EC believes it is left to individual members to decide which organisation they would like to volunteer for, if they wish to. Please see page 9 for contact details. We will of course continue to support our two local universities and their students.

Until next time!

Samina

ROOM 50 For the past two years Sheffield U3A has leased Room 50 in Victoria Hall, Chapel Walk. The room has been used by the Executive Committee for their regular meetings and has also been useful in providing storage space for various SU3A materials. However, it has always been intended that the room should also have a more general use and that it should be available for all our members.

It is pleasing to be able to report that various of our activity groups have been making more use of it. Those who have recently made their home at Victoria Hall include Knitting and Crochet, the Old Time Music Hall group, World of the Book (a literature study group) and Act Your Age (a play reading group).

Room 50 can accommodate up to 20 people, is light and airy and contains tea and coffee making facilities. There is also a general coffee lounge located in Victoria Hall and lift access is also available to Room 50. Victoria Hall has the advantage of being in a city centre location and can therefore be easily reached by all of our members, using bus and tram routes. Suitable city centre venues can be difficult to find and are usually expensive, but at a rate of just £10 per session, Room 50 represents exceptional value. The room is available from 9 am until 5 pm every weekday and can be hired on either a one-off or a regular basis.

If you think Room 50 might meet the needs of your group and wish to discuss whether it is suitable please call our Treasurer, Chris Jones on 07753 829771.

Booking Room 50 To book Room 50 please text Chris Jones with your group details and requested date/time on 07753 829771 or email him on treasurersheffieldu3a.org.uk Chris will reply within 48 hours. In exceptional circumstances, if Chris does not reply, please email your request to Dave Longson on websheffieldu3a.org.uk

5 Website: www.sheffieldu3a.org.uk Difficulty Hearing? Proposed Deaf Awareness Group Are you getting the best out of your group activities? Are you struggling to participate fully? The EC are looking to investigate and address this situation. There are no promises of complete solutions but as a minimum perhaps we can raise awareness of the specific needs of those members who have difficulty with hearing.

We are proposing to set up a Deaf Awareness Group, whose goals would be to investigate if there is a need for such a group, to identify what are the needs and explore what SU3A can do to meet those needs in a practical manner.

If you are interested in joining this group or have views on this matter please get in touch.

Personal Safety Awareness Together with our local Police and Fire Services, the EC have agreed to set up a working group to look at arranging talks about the “dos and don’ts” of topics such as: a fire in the home, pedestrian safety, scams, safety over festive periods, electrical appliances safety and many more. We already have two members in this working group and are looking for two more to join us. Contacts have already been made with both services. If you are interested in joining please get in touch.

Congratulations! Shelagh Woolliscroft and Roy Pilkington have been stalwart volunteers within SU3A for many years. Between them they have been on the EC, Chair of SU3A, General Coordinator, Chair of YAHR, supported the Drop-Ins as well continuing as group coordinators for several groups, including Friday Lectures and Architecture Past & Present. That wasn’t enough to keep them busy in August... they also moved house, got married and celebrated 150 birthdays between them. Congratulations to both!

Website: https://su3a.wildapricot.org 6 Professor Yasuhito Kinoshita

Professor Yasu of Rikkyo University, Japan, is leading a working group set up to investigate the problem of the ageing retired population in Japan. This working group consists not just of academics but also government officials and has received 3 years’ funding, to address this issue, and is tasked with investigating how different bodies in different countries address this problem, if at all. It will be no surprise that the U3A movement came up a number of times during their initial research.

Prof. Yasu, Samina Aslam, Chris Cave, Jo Couldry, Stephanie Dixon, Maggie Bower, Vera Dyer and Ann Granville

As part of their research Professor Yasu got in touch with SU3A to discuss the needs of our membership and how those needs are met. There was a frank discussion between Professor Yasu and members of the EC, group coordinators and general coordinators. The professor recorded our discussions and will take them back to be reviewed by the rest of his team. He was most impressed by the number of group activities available and the fact that it was our members who organised them!

Sheffield U3A Drop-In Sessions Don’t forget the drop-in sessions are held on the first Tuesday of every month from 10.00 am to noon at the United Reform Church, Norfolk Street, opposite the Crucible. They are open to all members, so come along if you would like help with IT issues or if you just want to meet and chat to other members.

7 Website: www.sheffieldu3a.org.uk Introducing our new Committee Members

I joined U3A 18 months ago after a friend recommended it. I attended the new members get together and it was suggested that computer assistance was required at the Drop-In to assist others and to help with Wild Apricot. I volunteered and have attended the Drop-In each time. I also take my shift on Wild Apricot dealing with new online members and renewals. I decided to remind myself Richard Cooper of my Italian learning by going to the "Italian for Holidays" group. By the end of the year I will have gone on 4 day trips and one weekend trip with U3A.

I have been a member of the Sheffield U3A for eleven years and have belonged to several different groups, each of which have given me a great deal of pleasure and through which I have met so many lovely people. I am sure that the friendships I have made through the U3A will be with me now for life. But I did also feel that it was time for me to give something back, and that commodity is time. I don't Wendy Woodhouse have a lot to give because I am too busy enjoying life but a lot is not needed - if everyone gives a couple of hours now and then, it will ensure the success and the future of the Sheffield U3A.

I joined U3A a couple of years ago when I moved to Sheffield after living abroad for many years. I have a background in teaching and now I am semi retired have enjoyed meeting new people and learning new things with the groups I have joined. I am now one of the general co-ordinators and knowing how much is required in running any organisation, have joined the EC as a general member. Barbara Lowe

Website: https://su3a.wildapricot.org 8 I joined U3A 2 years ago when I moved to Sheffield after 20 years living and working in Newcastle upon Tyne. Newly retired, I was keen to meet new people and discover new interests. I soon found an opportunity to get more involved when I volunteered to help edit the Links magazine. Through this I have Maggie Bower met some great people and discovered what an amazing organisation Sheffield U3A is. I have joined the committee to help to ensure that Links is current and relevant for our members.

Our new treasurer is Chris Jones. Chris hails from Leicester and is a Chartered Accountant. He moved to Sheffield 25 years ago and is an active member of the croquet and racketball groups.

Pachelbel Canon and Gigue

Bach Double Violin Concerto

Vivaldi/Bach Trumpet Concerto

Bach Oboe and Violin Concerto

Vivaldi Double Trumpet Concerto

Corelli Christmas Concerto

Leeds Town Hall is ideally suited for chamber orchestras. As the programme indicates, Helseth is joined by four soloists, (two violinists, one oboist and a fellow trumpeter - all women!). In February we had seats in the stalls; this time we shall try the balcony for better visibility. There is a lift. We shall arrive in time for the free pre-concert talk and/or drinks before the performance. The coach will leave the bus stop at the junction of Knowle Lane/Ecclesall Road at 17.00. The cost of the ticket, coach travel and driver’s gratuity is £31.00. To apply, please complete the form on page 12 and return to me with a small stamped addressed envelope as soon as possible.

21 October - Beyond Kes: Social Realism in Film Dave Forrest, Lecturer in Film, University of Sheffield.

The Barnsley-born novelist and screenwriter Barry Hines, is best known for Kes, his iconic film with Ken Loach. But Hines’s lesser-known works for the page and screen are deserving of reappraisal. The lecture will draw on Hines’s lyrical approach to landscape and place to argue for the filmic nature of Hines’s literary style. David will also shed light on Hines’s ‘lost’ work which has been researched as part of the University's recent Barry Hines project.

18 November - Benefits of Technology in the Fourth Age: Arlene Astell, Professor of Assistive Technology and Connected Healthcare (CATCH), University of Sheffield.

This lecture will focus on current research into the development of creative interventions to support people with dementia and other conditions, to live and age as well as possible, using for example, touch screen technology. Professor Astell is a psychologist with a PhD from Warwick University on the impact of dementia on communication.

11 Website: www.sheffieldu3a.org.uk 16 December - Sheffield's Father Christmas, JG Graves, Businessman and Benefactor. Mike Spick, former Local Studies Librarian.

Mike will recount the life and times of J G Graves, entrepreneur, businessman and Sheffield's greatest benefactor. You will know of Graves Park and Graves Art Gallery, now learn about Graves himself, who rose from humble origins to develop a multi- million pound business whilst always shunning the limelight.

There will be a special two-course Christmas lunch for us after the lecture, price £10. N.B. We need to book and pay in advance via the Showroom, Tel. 0114 275 7727.

Sheffield U3A Croquet Ripon trip 2016

In early June eleven players and two non-playing partners met at the Ripon Spa Hotel for the fifth annual stay. Early arrivals were able to play a game before lunch on the terrace, followed by more games in bright sunshine during the afternoon. The four lawns there are well-maintained and flat – which are a challenge after Parkhead! They are surrounded by a very traditional English garden, full of bird life. Being a U3A trip, there were plenty of opportunities to sit out and enjoy the surroundings and watch those who chose to play.

Tuesday turned out to be much more humid and overcast. With coffee, lunch and afternoon tea all taken on the terrace in between games, the day passed quickly. The last morning saw eight players entered in a round-robin competition. Playing in pairs for short games of 20 minutes or first to four hoops the competition was over in time for a last lunch before returning home.

Walking football is exactly what it sounds like – a standard game of football where players walk instead of run. It was a lovely day and the SU3A Commemorative Garden was looking its best on 8 June, when over thirty donors, together with other benefactors and gardening volunteers, gathered for a service of remembrance and celebration organised by the Gardening at Whirlowbrook Group. The garden was started nearly six years ago to mark SU3A's 25th birthday in 2011 and has matured well - visitors enjoyed wandering round in the sunshine before the service, whilst the A Capella group sang from the adjacent Japanese rock garden. They were able to note some new features such as the bog garden fed by a spring, and a large piece of rock, kindly donated by Birchover Stone, which now marks the lower entrance to the garden.

The service was led by Mike Granville and featured readings by Peter Digby and Paul Whyman, and choral pieces by A Capella and Vintage Voices, who also sang to us as we enjoyed coffee and biscuits in the Hall afterwards, courtesy of Saxon Hotels. Piper Joe McMulty came in at just the right time to mark the end of the service!

The garden is part of a public park and is there for everyone to enjoy. It is maintained by SU3A with assistance from Sheffield City Council and Abbeydale Rotary Club. If you or your group would like to donate to its upkeep in memory of a loved one or a former group member, please contact Alison Cowper on 0114 274 6165.

25 Website: www.sheffieldu3a.org.uk Quilting Hive Group Quilt Show 2016

Our second show was held at South Sheffield Church over two consecutive days in April and The Quilting Hive group was once again overwhelmed by the enthusiasm of so many visitors. The exhibits ranged widely, from tweeny projects to the Scout Quilt, which filled an entire wall in the hall. Several of our members have grandchildren who are little designers and quilters in the making, so we also displayed some of their handiwork, including hand stitched and machine stitched items. The skills of the twenty odd members never cease to amaze and inspire and as visitors walked slowly around the three exhibition areas, we heard nothing but good comments. Several people said how they had been encouraged to try a project for themselves... just the type of pledge U3A members like to hear.

Other quilters from around the city came and two of the most highly talented ladies enhanced our work by showing some of their beautiful quilts. Our work does not stop at quilting... we were able to add exquisite embroideries, needlecraft and a display of fine knitwear to over 200 quilts.

We invited a further group to participate in the event and we were delighted to see the World War I quilts from the city centre exhibition taking centre stage in the church itself.

All the money donated over the two days was given away... to Greenhill Library and Guide Dogs for the Blind.

Would we attempt a third show? Ask me again in a year or so!

Website: https://su3a.wildapricot.org 26 Walking Group News!

I know we have many walking groups but we try to cater for everyone's needs, so here are two requests. Anyone interested in learning Nordic walking? Do you have knowledge of the poles and their correct use? If so please be in touch with me. Also, I would like to know if anyone would like to coordinate a short walk (3-4 miles) group on a Thursday or Friday. It doesn't need to be weekly. Again please be in touch.

A Cappella Singers

This very successful group is considering a slight expansion. At present we meet approximately every other week, in a member's home. This may have to change if we increase our number and we may need to consider a public venue. We would welcome another tenor and a 1st soprano, in the first instance. Prospective members need choir experience, so that you are not put off by the other parts, a voice that will blend with others and some level of sight reading is useful. We sing unaccompanied but learn with the aid of a piano. Our repertoire is varied and we try and tackle songs that are a little different.

If you would like an informal chat or more details please contact me, Stephanie Dixon, coordinator A Cappella Singers.

27 Website: www.sheffieldu3a.org.uk Learning to Be Retired - recruiting now for February 2017

Mixed feelings about retirement? Learning to Be Retired is a six week course that may be just what you’re looking for.

Participant feedback has been very positive:

Before coming on the course I felt very down about being retired. I didn’t even use the word but now I feel the confidence to enjoy life.

It’s great to hear other people’s ideas and points of view and to know there are lots of different ways to retire.

It’s a friendly, supportive environment and everyone can get something out of this course.

Designed for those who feel unsure about retirement, the course is about learning to approach this phase of life with confidence and relish. I have based a lot of the course on ‘Retiring with Attitude’ by Caroline Lodge and Eileen Carnell, a book which really helped me when I first retired.

The course explores what happens to our identity, the impact of ageism and sexism, and the importance of retaining purpose and strong social connections. It’s aimed at those already retired as well as those coming up to retirement. It does NOT cover financial planning, pensions or investments.

The February 2017 course will take place on six consecutive Wednesday afternoons in Sheffield city centre starting February 1 st (cost £10 for 6 sessions). It’s best to reserve your place early as places are limited and the course is often oversubscribed.

It’s back again! Following the resounding successes of the past three years, the Quiz, with the best pie and pea supper (and vegetarian option), best questions and best conversation this side of the Pennines, with prizes for both winners and not quite winners, will be held on Saturday 10 December at 19.30 in Holy Trinity Church Hall, Grove Road, Millhouses (good bus links and easy parking). The cost is £13 per person (held from last year).

Join us for an evening of fun, conversation, mental stimulation, good food, and the odd question or two. This year’s theme is “I Used To Know That", as we roll back the years to recall all that knowledge we used to have! With Christmas fast approaching, there will also be a round redolent of mince pies, log fires and strange rosy-cheeked men with beards.

We are looking for teams of four people but do not worry if you cannot form a team yourself: come along anyway and we will put teams together on the night.

If you would like to join us, for a relaxing and stimulating evening, please book online at www.su3a.wildapricot.org using your email and password or complete the form on page 30 and return it to Jane Whitehead with your cheque, made payable to Sheffield U3A Weekenders, and a small s.a.e. as soon as possible. Please ring 07729 834993 if you would like further information.

Why Book Online? • You know you have a place immediately • You save two stamps • You save the organiser a lot of work

Travel Group Short Break to Dorset 19-23 June 2017

Our base for this short break is the Suncliffe Hotel, Bournemouth, which is a short walk from the piers, parks and the wide sandy bay. There is a local bus service passing the hotel and the hop-on-hop-off Land Train is an easy option for getting around. Bournemouth is well placed for our outings with most of our venues within a twenty mile coach journey.

En route from Sheffield our lunch break will be at Abingdon-on-Thames. The town has an attractive blend of buildings and architecture dating from 1100 to the present day, with the Abbey and waterside meadow close to the Abingdon Bridge crossing the River Thames. The next day, we will visit the National Motor Museum on the Beaulieu Estate with its many attractions, including unlimited rides on the open top Veteran bus and Britain’s oldest Monorail. At the gothic-styled Palace House guides will provide a flavour of life upstairs and downstairs in a Victorian country house. At a nearby café, refreshments may be bought before we go on to Buckler’s Hard – the 18th century village, where ships for Nelson’s navy were built and launched onto the river Beaulieu. Our day out ends with a short cruise on the river.

We shall also visit the old market town of Wimborne Minster, whose ancient Minster Church of St Cuthberga still has a chained library, the Priest’s House museum with its beautiful walled garden and the model town with its faithful replicas of 1950s buildings. We will then move on to Tollpuddle, where we learn the harrowing story of the arrest, trial and punishment of the men whose treatment led to the foundation of modern trade unionism. In the Tollpuddle Martyrs Museum we can learn more about these men from an informative and educational exhibition.

33 Website: www.sheffieldu3a.org.uk The 9th century town of Christchurch, which straddles the rivers Stour and Avon, was one of Alfred the Great’s strongholds against the Danes. The Parish church of 1094 is Britain’s longest, at 91 metres (just over 300 feet), and its tower has the country’s two oldest bells dating from 1370. We will have a guided tour of the church and there is a refectory where you may get refreshments before we leave for a drive in the New Forest – ’s smallest National Park. This was once a royal hunting ground jealously guarded and preserved for the pastimes of the privileged few. We shall call at Brockenhurst, one of the largest villages in the New Forest with a good selection of shops and cafés, and, just a short walk away, there is a famous watersplash where animals stop to drink. On our homeward journey we will visit Basildon Park. This National Trust property is a fine Georgian Mansion which has been restored to its full glory and filled with fine antique furnishings and important Old Master paintings. Below stairs, the 1950s kitchen and laundry are utterly of their period. There are informal gardens and extensive parklands and the Parlour café in the stable yard can provide refreshments.

The cost for this short break is £366.50 per person sharing a twin or double room with a £60 supplement for single occupancy. Entry to Basildon Park for non-members of the National Trust will cost £11.50 each. The price quoted includes bed, breakfast and evening meal at the Suncliffe Hotel, transport throughout by Walter Martin, all gratuities and admission fees (except Basildon Park). Lunches, snacks and any other refreshments are not included.

To apply for this holiday, please use the booking slip on page 35 and send it as soon as possible together with a cheque for the deposit of £50 per person to Margaret Bullivant. Please note that members are responsible for arranging their own insurance. Sheffield U3A cannot be responsible for any claims.

35 Website: www.sheffieldu3a.org.uk Drums and Songs: An Appreciation

After a rousing drum beat the 2016 AGM commenced with musical contributions from three Groups.

First was a popular song from the War Years, for many of us a time of childhood, for others a time of active service. What memories that song held with its Blue Birds and colourful valleys in bloom again. Fittingly, Singing for Pleasure ended with Jerusalem – another song with patriotic images and a homecoming of sorts.

Drumming took over in great style. It was like a military tattoo with very precise timing, the product of many months of rehearsal by the SU3A Drumming Group. We look forward to their return.

Finally there was a medley of Old Time songs from the Music Hall Group. These were the favourites of our grandparents and parents and again brought back memories of childhood. And how charming to see our members dress up in costumes of that period: the ladies in long skirts and trimmed hats, the gentlemen in blazers and straw boaters. Each of the ladies sang a solo: After the Ball, Joshua Joshua, I’ve Got my Eye on You, Alice Blue Gown. They were highly enjoyable, but perhaps tear jerkers for some of us.

Enthralled, most people trooped out to the final part of the AGM next door. It had been a remarkably successful morning, well attended throughout. As you make up your new diaries, do enter the AGM 2017, an opportunity not to be missed.

Publicity Coordinator The position of publicity coordinator will be vacant from April 2017 due to the current holder completing a 4 year term. The position is attractive in that there is no one way to do this role, and therefore it offers the holder considerable scope to develop the position in their own particular way, subject to discussions in and decisions made by the Executive Committee as a whole.

During the past 4 years emphasis has been placed on - • Developing publicity materials (publicity bags and pens, a new publicity leaflet, a banner and roll-up sail banner). • Reporting on SU3A events in LINKS , the national U3A magazine (THIRD AGE MATTERS ) and the local press. • Talking to local voluntary groups (Rotary, women's groups, Macular Degeneration Society). • Working with a professional organisation, Pre-Retirement Planning (PREP) in delivering a regular talk on SU3A to staff approaching retirement at Hillsborough College, Sheffield Childrens' Hospital and occasional other employers.

I will willingly talk to and provide extra information to anyone with a potential interest in this post.

Sustainable Development Group Energy saving: SU3A members will tell how it’s been for them Making improvements to your home in order to save energy – for the planet’s sake as well as your own – is almost in the mainstream these days, but although there are lots of technologies and suppliers out there and no shortage of marketing talk, advice based on objective, practical experience is still hard to come by. 37 Website: www.sheffieldu3a.org.uk Fortunately some of those who have already “been there and done that” (mostly members of the Sustainability Group) will once again be welcoming to their homes fellow Sheffield U3A members who are considering similar initiatives of their own and want assurance that they’re doing the right thing. As one visitor commented last year, “It was useful to discuss what we were thinking of having done with people who weren't trying to sell us something”. To get an idea of what was on show last year, go to YouTube and search for Sheffield U3A Green Homes.

This year’s event is planned for the afternoons of Monday 7th and Wednesday 9th November, although other times are possible by arrangement. The mix of properties is slightly different this time, but again covers a range of types, vintages and locations:

• Edwardian terrace in Greystones, S11: external and internal wall insulation, solar panels. 07941 687367

• 3-bedroom 1930s detached in Sharrow, S11 with improvements made after an energy survey: loft, internal wall and under-floor insulation, solar panels, and various low-tech draught-proofing & insulation measures. 07817 284971

• Small 2-bedroom property built 1989 in Treeton, S60: comprehensive insulation, double glazing and roof solar panels which collectively have reduced energy costs to £35 per month. 07814 704344 / 0114 2692907

• Inter-war semi in Greystones, S11. Gradual improvements have been made: double and triple glazing, new boiler, solar hot water, under- floor and cavity insulation and triple glazed door. 0114 2685496 / jocouldryyahoo.co.uk (also the contact for general enquiries about the event).

If you intend to visit any of the properties, please let the householder know in advance.
