In 1906 he married Eliza Ingersoll Bowditch (1880-1955), daughter of a Harvard professor, by whom he had two sons, Henry Bowditch and Gerard Willem. The newlyweds moved to Germany, where van Loon received his Ph.D. from the University of Munich in 1911 with a dissertation that became his first book, The Fall of the Dutch Republic (1913). Van Loon had two later marriages, to Eliza Helen (Jimmie) Criswellin 1920 and playwright Frances Goodrich Ames in 1927, but aer a divorce from Ames he returned to Criswell (it is debatable whether or not they remarried); she inherited his estate in 1944.From the 1910s until his death, Van Loon wrote many books, illustrating them himself. Most widely known among these is The Story of Mankind, a history of the world especially for children, which won the first Newbery Medal in 1922. The book was later updated by Van Loon and has continued to be updated, first by his son and later by other historians. However, he also wrote many other very popular books aimed at young adults. SCHENKER’S FIRST “AMERICANIZATION”: GEORGE WEDGE, THE INSTITUTE OF MUSICAL ART, AND THE “APPRECIATION RACKET” DAVID CARSON BERRY quarter of a century ago, William Rothstein first employed a now common phrase when A he spoke of the “Americanization of Schenker”—that is, the accommodation that had to be made to bring Schenker’s ideas into the American academy, a process that involved ex- punging (or at least reconstituting) “those elements of Schenker’s thought [that clashed] most spectacularly with the American mind.”1 Rothstein focused mainly on émigrés displaced by the Second World War (e.g., Oswald Jonas, Ernst Oster, and Felix Salzer), and on Americans a generation younger (e.g., Milton Babbitt and Allen Forte).

  • Good Books About History, 2011-12
Good Books about History, 2011-12 Reviews by members of the OLLI-GMU History Club Compiled by Tom Hady Compiler’s Note: With our decision a couple of years ago to include historical fiction, the question of what to call “history” has become more difficult. I view my role as limited. I compile the reviews and I edit for readability and format. I will occasionally ask a contributor whether this belongs in a history compilation, but I accept their conclusion-TFH. Davod Abulafia, The Great Sea: A Human History of the Mediterranean (2011), reviewed by Tom Hady This is a history of the Mediterranean basin from before antiquity to the present in one (albeit thick) book. A good one, too. Abulafia is Professor of Mediterranean History at Cambridge and knows the subject. If you are like me, you will want to read fairly rapidly for a while, and then you’ll suddenly find clues to things you had wondered about, and you’ll savor the details. I wish I’d read this book before some of our travels in the area--but then again, I read it now with greater understanding because I had travelled there. Roy Adkins and Lesley Adkins , The War for All the Oceans (2006), reviewed by Don Ferrett. This year marks the bicentennial of the War of 1812. Those of us who got most of their American history education in the public schools learned that that was the war against the British, who wouldn’t leave our commercial shipping alone and impressed our sailors. It was also the war when the White House was burned and Andrew Jackson became a hero at the Battle of New Orleans.

ADOPTION OF ALIENS INTO THE AMERICAN WAY OF LIFE 83 VI, CONCLUSIONS "^^^ 11 CHAPTER I AIJTI-FOREIGNISM, A TRADITIONAL AMERICAN ATTITUDE The short period of United States history from the end of the First Great War in I919 until the beginning of the Great Depression in I929 was a climactic era for the expression of traditional American fears and superstitions of aliens or foreigners./ The purpose of this thesis is to study various aspects of anti-foreign feeling in America during the nine- teen-twenties and to determine reasons for these attitudes by examining articles in periodical literature of the time. Over two hundred sixty- five articles from twenty-six different periodicals, as well as government documents and some of the better-known books concerning American iomiigra- tion were consulted in researching this topic. Most of the information used came directly from periodical literature published between 1919 and 1929. Since a large majority of the anti-foreign sentiment voiced during the twenties was directed against immigrants, the matter of American immi gration will receive the major emphasis of this thesis. One unfortunate result of World War I was the severe destruction and suffering inflicted upon civilian populations of Europe and Western Asia. Never before in history had war produced such utter devastation in the domestic and economic lives of so many people and nations.

NEW YORK: BONI AND LIVERIGHT, INC. ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED IN 1922 The Story of Utopias By Lewis Mumford. This web edition created and published by Global Grey 2013. GLOBAL GREY NOTHING BUT E-BOOKS TABLE OF CONTENTS ACKNOWLEDGMENTS INTRODUCTION CHAPTER ONE: How the will-to-utopia causes men to live in two worlds, and how, therefore, we re-read the Story of Utopias—the other half of the Story of Mankind. CHAPTER TWO: How the Greeks lived in a New World, and utopia seemed just round the corner. How Plato, in the Republic, is chiefly concerned with what will hold the ideal city together CHAPTER THREE: How something happened to utopia between Plato and Sir Thomas More; and how utopia was discovered again, along with the New World CHAPTER FOUR: How the new Humanism of the Renascence brings us within sight of Christianopolis; and how we have for the first time a glimpse of a modern utopia CHAPTER FIVE: How Bacon and Campanella, who have a great reputation as utopians, are little better than echoes of the men who went before them CHAPTER SIX: How something happened in the eighteenth century which made men "furiously to think," and how a whole group of utopias sprang out of the upturned soil of industrialism CHAPTER SEVEN: How some utopians have thought that a good community rested at bottom on the right division and use of land; and what sort of communities these land-animals projected CHAPTER EIGHT: How Étienne Cabet dreamed of a new Napoleon called Icar, and a new France called Icaria; and how his utopia, with that which Edward Bellamy shows us in Looking Backward, gives us a hint of what machinery might bring us to if the industrial organization were nationalized CHAPTER NINE: How William Morris and W.

Tiny Font SizeBy Ms. OptimisticI ordered this version of The Story of Mankind for one of my high school students. The words are extremely small and difficult to read, even for my students. Because the version that I purchased for myself is sold out, I am forced to keep this copy. I will allow my student to use my copy and try my best to read from this book. I certainly wouldn't recommend this version to anyone.29 of 29 people found the following review helpful. No EditingBy L. WilsonI just bought this book to use as a portion of our homeschool history curricullum. However this versionof the book (ISBN-13: 978-1153721998) also has little or no editing. There are whole sentences missing and some sentences stop mid line then continued on the next line. We can't make sense of it so I have purchaed an original text with illustrations. Hopefully it won't contain these errors and I can write an actual review on the material in the book.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.
