Orchids planted in May of President - Lawrie Kull 2015 and monitored in July of 2016 had a 27.6% survivorship and orchids planted in May of 2016 Vice-President - George Cobb and monitored in July of 2016 had a 54.3% survivorship. We were ecstatic with these results and Secretary - Ed Miller thank all who have volunteered, donated funds, and who have worked tirelessly to get us to this Treasurer - Jim Jauquet point. We continue working through this process of propagating and out-planting, a research ini- Directors tiative of enormous scale. No other organization has done this before, but it is what we need to do Rob Davis to save our orchids. Jim Flint Range Light – Restore the Range Light – Phase 1 Mark Martin Vicki Medland Built in 1869 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989, the Upper Range Bob Ryan Light and its companion the Lower Range Light are the only lighthouses of this design that are still Jane Whitney on range and functional as private navigational aids. The Restore the Range Light Campaign Bill Wolff reached another milestone in 2016, completing the fundraising of Phase 1: The Replacement of the roof shingles and renovation of the exterior light room. Thanks to the generous support of those who gave to Phase 1 and to those who gave in 2013 to renovate the Lower Range Light. We Staff Look forward to kicking off Phase 2: The Complete renovation of the Upper Range light in the near Executive Director future. Thank you to all who have contributed in so many ways. Steve Leonard Land Manager Cook-Albert Fuller Nature Center Brian Forest 26,000 members and visitors walked through the doors of the Cook-Albert Fuller Nature Center Visitor Services Manager in 2016. From those who utilize a walker or wheelchair, to families with strollers and all in-be- Kate LeRoy tween, The Ridges had never been more accessible. Thank you to all of the dedicated volunteers Development & Marketing Director and staff who welcomed each and every person, led a Naturalist guided hike, or told the story of Drew Richmond the Range Lights on a tour. Visitor Services Assistant Hidden Brook Boardwalk Morgan Rusnak We dedicated the Hidden Brook Boardwalk on September 1st, 2016. The volunteer members of Office Administrator our Wednesday Crew, working in conjunction with Peil Construction, made remarkable progress Donna Johnson throughout 2016. The handicapped-accessible boardwalk is an 1,800 foot long, ADA compli- ant, 8-foot wide structure which winds through nearly a third of a mile of critical wetland *As of August 2016 habitat for native orchids, the federally threatened dwarf lake iris and the federally endan- gered Hine’s emerald dragonfly. Around seventy-five members and visitors joined us to share an incredible accomplishment for the organization. Having a universal boardwalk, accessible for all, allows everyone to experience the ridges and swales and its incredible diversity. It has been a mean- ingful project for the volunteers who helped build it and for the donors who gave because they knew the importance of accessibility. We are still in the process of finishing benches, the two over- looks and continue to seek funding for interpretive signs and other enhancements. Phragmites and Invasive species Grants To protect the Sanctuary, we need to keep ahead of the ever-increasing demands to control inva- sive species. The Ridges received a $200,000 Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Aquatic Invasive Species Control grant to treat Phragmites in the Sanctuary, Toft Point, adjacent properties in the Baileys Harbor area and our Logan Creek property in Jacksonport. The grant runs for three years. The grant also pays for University of Wisconsin- Green Bay students to map out ex- isting populations and assess the treatment from one year to the next. In addition, The Ridges re- ceived $24,000 from US Fish & Wildlife to treat Phragmites in our Pickerel Pond area. The Nature Conservancy used these funds as a match to receive a $186,200 Sustain Our Great Lakes grant to treat invasives in the designated RAMSAR site, of which The Ridges is a part. The Nature Conser- vancy crew will help treat invasives (other than Phragmites) on The Ridges property over the next two years.
