How can you allow players to play in the rain? I cannot play in those conditions. I don't know who allows us to play in those kind of conditions. I mean, I don't think they really care what we think. I think they care about other things, I guess. So, well, I'm just pissed. I just cannot play in those conditions. I mean, I'm not healthy enough. We shouldn't play in that kind of rain. Why? We still have couple of days of tournament. What's the point? " 'Impossible conditions' Meanwhile, Halep felt the conditions were impossible to play. "It was impossible to play, in my opinion. And to play tennis matches during the rain I think it's a bit too much," said Halep. "But everyone was in the same situation, and who was stronger won today. No one cares about the players in my opinion. I don't care that I lost the match today, but I was close to getting injured with my back, so that's — that's a big problem. "But like I said, no one cares. We have just to go and play. I was frustrated about waiting three days and about playing in the rain. I didn't feel sure on court, safe on court. When I went to ask to play on Court 1 — doesn't matter which court, just to play, because we know that it's going to rain and it's going to be late, but they took the decisions to put doubles and then us. Here we were. " Playing in the rain brings bad-tempered defeats in Paris timeslive.co.za 2016-06-01 11:44 By AFP www.mid-day.com

137 big cats moved from Thai Tiger Temple (1.02/3) Wildlife officials in Kanchanaburi province of Thailand, armed with a court order, have undertaken a treacherous process of moving 137 tigers from a controversial Buddhist temple which draws tourists as a petting zoo, but stands accused of selling off the big cats for slaughter. A tiger in an enclosure at the temple before being taken to a government animal refuge. Pic/AFP The director of Thailand’s Wildlife Conservation Office, Teunjai Noochdumrong, said three tigers were tranquilised and transported on Monday in an operation involving about 1,000 state personnel that is expected to continue for a week. The animals will be taken to three government animal refuges elsewhere in Thailand. The Wat Pha Luang Ta Bua Tiger Temple, a popular money-earning tourist attraction, has been criticised by animal rights activists because of allegations that it is not properly set up to care for the animals and flouted regulations restricting their trade. The monks relented after police obtained a court order. More than 300 officials remained at the temple overnight to ensure the tigers remained safe.

Cincinnati's pioneering gorilla exhibit now common in zoos Cincinnati (US): The Cincinnati Zoo, where a gorilla was shot and killed over the weekend after a 3-year-old boy climbed over a fence and fell into its enclosure, has an open viewing area that was among the first of its kind and is now common in many zoos around the country. Also Read: Cincinnati Zoo gorilla's killing sparks outrage on The exhibit was at the forefront of zoos moving away from cages in favour of more realistic living environments and adopting a range of exhibits, from natural habitats behind glass walls to jungle-like settings separated from the public by hedges and bamboo fences. While police are investigating what happened in Cincinnati and federal inspectors are planning their own review, the zoo says it too will look at whether it needs to reinforce the barriers even though it considers the enclosure more secure than what's required. "The exhibit is safe, the barrier is safe," said zoo director Thane Maynard, who noted the exhibit is routinely checked by federal inspectors and the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, which also plans to investigate what happened. The breach, the zoo director said, was the first time a visitor had entered the zoo's Gorilla World, which opened in 1978 and was billed as the first "bar-less" outdoor gorilla habitat in the nation. A federal inspection less than two months ago found no problems with the gorilla exhibit, but earlier inspections reported issues including the potential danger to the public from a March incident involving wandering polar bears inside a behind-the-scenes service hallway. Some critics have blamed the boy's parents for not keeping a close eye on the child, who is now doing fine after being treated at a hospital, according to his family. At least two animal rights groups were holding the zoo responsible for the death of the 17-year-old western lowland gorilla on Saturday, charging that the barrier made up of a fence, bushes and a moat wasn't adequate. Most gorilla exhibits around the country now have open-viewing areas often protected by a combination of glass walls, mesh netting and moats. Zoo Atlanta, which boasts the nation's largest gorilla collection, has several outdoor viewing spots that are designed to give visitors the feeling of being very close, but they are still separated by a series of safety barriers. Gorillas at the Columbus Zoo are in two enclosed areas behind glass and mesh. The approach is an exception to the type of open enclosure in Cincinnati, which is the industry standard, said spokeswoman Patty Peters.

Oldest train Punjab Mail completes 104 years on June 1 One of the oldest long distance trains on Indian Railways - the Punjab Mail - completed 104 years on June 1. The origins of the Bombay to Peshawar Punjab Mail is based on a cost estimate paper circa 1911 and a complaint by an irate passenger circa October 12, 1912 about the 'late arrival of the train by a few minutes at Delhi', it has been more or less inferred that the Punjab Mail made her maiden out of Ballard Pier Mole station on 1 June 1912. Punjab Mail in good old days Punjab Mail is over 16 years older than the more glamorous Frontier Mail. Ballard Pier Mole station was actually a hub for GIPR services from where the Punjab Mail or Punjab Limited as she was then called, finally steamed out on June 1, 1912. To begin with, there were the P & O steamers bringing in the mail, and the Officers of the Raj, along with their wives, on their first posting in Colonial India. The steamer voyage between Southampton and Bombay lasted 13 days. Another picture of Punjab Mail As the British officials held combined tickets both for their voyage to Bombay, as well as their inland journey by train to their place of posting, they would, after disembarking, simply board one of the trains bound for either Madras, Calcutta or Delhi. Of the trains, the most prestigious was the Punjab Mail, or Punjab Limited as she was then called. The Punjab Limited used to run on fixed mail days from Bombay's Ballard Pier Mole station all the way to Peshawar, via the GIP route, covering the 2496 km in about 47 hrs. The train comprised of six cars: 3 for passengers, and 3 for postal goods and mail. The three passenger carrying cars had a capacity of 96 passengers only. The sparkling cars were all corridor cars, and were made up of first class, dual berth compartments. Catering as they were to the upper class gentry, the cars were pretty well appointed, offering lavatories, bathrooms, a restaurant car, and a compartment for luggage and the servants of the white sahibs. Punjab Mail in recent times During the pre-partition period, the Punjab Limited was the fastest train in British India. The Punjab Limited's route ran over GIP track for the large part, and passed through Itarsi, Agra, Delhi, Amritsar and Lahore, before terminating at Peshawar Cantonment. The train started originating and terminating at Bombay VT (now Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus Mumbai) from 1914. The train then loosely came to be known as the Punjab Mail, rather than Punjab Limited, and became a daily service. From a service meant primarily for the upper class white sahibs, the Punjab Mail soon started catering to the lower classes too. Third class cars started appearing on the Punjab Mail by the mid 1930s. In 1914, the GIP route from Bombay to Delhi was some 1541 km which the train used to cover in 29 hours and 30 minutes. In the early 1920s, this transit time was further reduced to 27 hours and 10 minutes, despite there being as many as 18 intermediate stops.

Is Pakistan banned spinner Danish Kaneria looking to settle in India? Karachi: Mystery surrounds the sudden departure of Pakistan's banned Test leg- spinner, Danish Kaneria and his family to India although his brother claims they have gone to perform some religious rituals. Danish Kaneria Kaneria, his wife, children and his mother flew out to India on Sunday night and are presently said to be in Kochi but speculations are rampant that the banned player might have gone to India to seek a livelihood and settle down there. "My family is in India to perform some religious rituals which will take around 10-days. Our return dates are not confirmed as yet," Kaneria told a television channel from India. His brother, Vicky Kaneria, who is in Karachi and employed with an oil campany also insisted it was a personal trip for religious purposes. But he was unwilling to speak further on the issue. Speculations have been rife over the real purpose of the visit to India as Danish Kaneria had earlier this year reportedly said he would have got more justice in India being a Hindu by faith. Fed up with the non-cooperation of the Pakistan Cricket Board, Danish had caused an uproar in Pakistani cricket circles when he said that if he had not been a Hindu his case would have been handled differently by the cricket board. The leg-spinner was also disappointed when he got no response to a letter he wrote to Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif in early April about his case. The leg-spinner, who appeared in 61 Tests for Pakistan, was banned in 2012 by the England and Wales Cricket Board for life for spot-fixing and has since then also lost two appeals to have the ban overturned. Kaneria is facing another case in the Sindh High Court where the ECB has filed a petition for recovery of fines and costs of the case totaling over 200,000 pounds. At the last hearing of the case the court ordered that details of the bank accounts of the leg spinner be submitted with it. Speculations are rife since in the last two years number of Hindu families have migrated to India. In his letters sent to the prime minister and other government dignitaries and ministers, Kaneria has pleaded his case on humanitarian grounds. According to Kaneria's earlier statements, his involvement is yet to be proven in a court of law, but the PCB and the ECB have maintained their life ban on him and prevented him from earning his livelihood.

Gillespie met Australia coach Darren Lehmann this week and it is believed his former international team- mate asked if he was willing to become Australia's bowling coach. Jason Gillespie But former Australia fast bowler Gillespie now claims no job offer was made by Cricket Australia and he has contacted Lehmann to inform him he will not be applying for one if it was. "He mentioned that there was a role coming up with Australian cricket," Gillespie told BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra on Tuesday. "I want to make it very clear there was no job offer from Darren - it was merely gauging interest. " Gillespie was strongly linked with England's vacant head coach position last year, but the job was eventually given to his compatriot . The 41-year-old's reputation grew after he inspired Yorkshire to successive County Championship titles in 2014 and 2015, while they have lost only four of their 70 Championship matches under his leadership. However, Gillespie has always insisted he is happy with Yorkshire and he confirmed he was concerned about the time away from his family that an international role would entail. "I said thanks for the chat and I would get back to Darren the next day," Gillespie said. "I confirmed to him that I am not going to apply for a role with Cricket Australia - so we can end all the speculation right now. "At this point in time in my life, I am not prepared to be away from my family for that length of time. "So, it is not on the radar. I am not applying for any international cricket roles. " Gillespie now appears set to continue dividing his time between Yorkshire and his existing role in charge of Adelaide Strikers in Australia's Big Bash domestic Twenty20 tournament.

'Injured' Lionel Messi skips tax trial Barcelona: The trial of Argentina star Lionel Messi on tax fraud charges opened yesterday in Spain in his absence just days before Argentina's first match in the Copa America against Chile. Lionel Lionel Messi Messi, 28, and his father, Jorge Horacio Messi, are accused of using a chain of fake companies in Belize and Uruguay to avoid paying taxes on 4.16 million euros ($4.7 million) of Messi's income earned through the sale of his image rights from 2007- 09. They have been charged with three counts of tax fraud. The Barcelona court hearing the case adjourned the trial at around noon local time (1000 GMT) after considering preliminary legal questions because of the absence of witnesses who had been due to appear, including Messi's mother Celia Cuccitini. 'The trial will resume on Wednesday at 10am (0800 GMT) with testimony from the witnesses and experts. Messi had planned to be in Barcelona for the start of the trial but a lower back injury he suffered during a friendly against Honduras last week prevented him from doing so, defence lawyer Javier Sanchez-Vera said. The Argentina captain was resting in his hometown of Rosario, located 300 kilometres (185 miles) north of Buenos Aires on Monday. Messi and his father are due to take the stand on Thursday on the last day of the trial. Under Spanish law, a defendant is not obliged to attend the full trial if prosecutors seek a jail sentence of less than two years. Spanish prosecutors are seeking a jail sentence of 22-and-a-half months for Messi and his father if they are found guilty, plus fines equivalent to the amount that was allegedly defrauded. But any such sentence would likely be suspended as is common in Spain for first offences carrying a sentence of less than two years. The Barcelona forward and his defence team have argued that the player's father handled his finances without reporting to him, and that the striker was not aware of any wrongdoing. "My dad handled the cash," Messi said in September 2013 when he was questioned by a judge investigating the case.

It would be great to win Copa America: Lionel Messi Los Angeles: Lionel Messi must shrug off the gruelling demands of a globe- trotting schedule if he is to fulfill his dream of leading Argentina to a first major tournament victory in 23 years at the Copa America Centenario (June 3 to 26). Lionel Messi At both the 2014 World Cup and 2015 Copa America Messi was named the player of the tournament but his team lost in the finals. It's no wonder then that he hit back angrily at those who questioned his commitment in the wake of last year's Copa America final defeat to Chile, which came 12 months after the Argentines were beaten by Germany in the World Cup final. "I get annoyed by people who attack you without thinking. We were lucky enough to get to the final of the World Cup and the Copa America and it seems like we didn't do anything. It's not like we lost in the last 16. I want to win everything I play in with the national team. It would be great to win Copa America," he told Argentine TV channel TyC Sports.

Alastair Cook can challenge Sachin Tendulkar's record: Sunil Gavaskar New Delhi: Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar believes that the youngest entrant in the illustrious 10,000 Test run club, Alastair Cook can challenge batting legend Sachin Tendulkar's all-time Test run record. Sunil Gavaskar Cook on Monday became the first England cricketer to cross the 10,000-run mark in Test cricket, and the youngest overall, beating Tendulkar's record by five months by reaching the milestone at the age of 31 years and five months. 'Big advantage' Tendulkar — Test cricket's most prolific batsman with 15,921 runs — was 31 years, 10 months 20 days old when he scored his 10,000th run in 2005. Sachin Tendulkar "Well the big advantage that England always has is that they are always playing a minimum of 11-12 Test matches on an average in a year. In 11-12 Test matches even if you score 50 runs per Test match you are getting about 500 runs every year," Gavaskar said. "So over the next 6-7 years there might be a period when he (Cook) might have a terrific year where he might score a 1000 runs so that will certainly give him a chance. He has got age on his side, he is also one of the very fit players. He is less than 32 years and if he plays for 6-8 more years he has got a very good chance," the legendary batsman told NDTV. England skipper Alastair Cook during his unbeaten 47 against Sri Lanka on Monday. Pic/Getty Images Cook is the 12th batsman and only the second opener to get to 10,000 runs in Tests. Cook achieved the feat during England's nine- victory over Sri Lanka at Durham. Asked whether Cook's achievement was even more special considering that he's an opening batsman, Gavaskar replied in the affirmative. "It definitely does because the ball does swing around a little bit more, the pitches can sometimes a little bit lively. "Playing in England is much more difficult against quality opposition. So I think Alastair Cook certainly deserves a lot of praise for getting there," he said.

Suspecting that inmates had managed to slip in mobile phones despite body scanners and frisking in the high-security facility and had found a way to beat their jammers, prison authorities requested the District Collector, Saurabh Rao, to remove one mobile tower in the vicinity. Yerawada Central Prison. File pic Rao, who is also the head of a constituent body of the prison, directed the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to look into the issue. The civic officials, however, found a number of illegal towers in the vicinity of the jail and cut their wires a week ago. Since then, citizens within a radius of 4-5 km are barely able to access their networks. People are often seen on their rooftops or walking quite a distance to catch a network signal. When mid-day visited the area yesterday, all networks were down. Affected residents took out a signature campaign over the last week to convince civic officials to look into the issue. Extent of problem That the prison authorities had a hand in the issue came to light only after a local corporator Dr Siddharth Dhende, who runs a clinic in the vicinity of the prison, noticed that the problem was widespread. “We were facing poor network coverage for a week. Initially, I thought it was a problem with the service provider, but when more and more complaints about it started pouring in, I realised the extent of the problem. That prompted us to conduct a survey in the ward. Of the 40,000 constituents, nearly 19,700 were affected. We took out a signature campaign and approached the PMC.” It was during discussions with civic officials that they realised that prison authorities had set the ball rolling on the problem. Letter of discontent The officials revealed that Yerawada Central Prison’s Superintendent UT Pawar had written a letter to Rao, pointing out that hardened criminals, terrorists, ganglords and Maoists have been lodged in the facility and the presence of mobile towers in the vicinity offered them an opportunity to run their operations from within the premises. In the past, several mobile phones have been recovered from the inmates. Pawar then suggested that one mobile tower in the vicinity be removed as part of stringent security measures. Rao told mid-day that he directed the PMC to conduct a survey and go only after illegal towers. “Turned out, most of the towers were illegal. The PMC cut their lines. We have no been told that a number of citizens are facing a problem due to this. We have directed errant network providers to pay their dues or the penalty amount and get the issue resolved.” He said the PMC has also been ordered not to clear any more tower in the prison’s vicinity. “We have asked the prison authorities to step up their security and put more jammers.” Despite repeated attempts, Pawar could not be contacted. Inspector General of Prisons BK Upadhyay said he was not aware of such a letter having been to the PMC. “The superintendent may have sent this letter with good intentions. He has the power to do so.” Hoodwinking cops A senior jail official said the prison has 4,867 inmates, and a staff strength of around 145. “We have jammers in place and frisk prisoners when they enter the facility. Still, some manage to hide their mobile phones from us. That’s why we made the suggestion to the collector that he target mobile towers.” He added that the prison authorities didn’t realise the enormity of their ‘suggestion’.

Mumbai: Woman's body found a week after she committed suicide A 35-year-old woman who committed suicide was discovered over a week later on Saturday, when her landlord informed the police. The police and fire brigade personnel forced the door open and found Cindy’s body hanging from the fan. “It appeared that she had hung herself about eight days ago,” said an officer from Malad police station. The officials said Cindy had left a suicide note stating she was in a financial crisis and could not handle it anymore. “I am willfully taking this step and no one is to be blamed for this. I have not proved to be a good wife, daughter and sister, and though I have been strong I cannot bear this anymore,” it said. ‘Selling a kidney’ The police informed her mother and brother who stay in Hyderabad. According to her brother Jai Prakash Khanka, Cindy was fed up of her husband Calaid and his extra-marital affairs. He also claimed that Calaid used to get his girlfriends home and abused and assaulted Cindy often. According to Jai Prakash, Cindy had contacted an agent to sell one of her kidneys for Rs 5.5 lakh to pay back loans, which she had taken from various people and close friends. The agent asked her to pay his commission of Rs 1 lakh. Cindy borrowed the money from her family. The agent, however, cheated her and disappeared with the money. “My sister had asked for some money. I transferred it in her bank account. She had told me that her financial condition was not stable. On April 24 she sent me a message saying, “Anna, I took the money from you because I had to pay advance money to sell my kidney, and now those people have cheated me, they are not answering my call. Don’t know what to do, I am very scared. I feel like killing myself. Sorry Anna, feeling very disturbed,” said Jai Prakash. He added, “I asked Cindy to come to Hyderabad and she promised to come on May 2. Till May 3, I was in touch with her through SMS.” According to Jai Prakash, Cindy alias Madhavi, met Calaid Daniels in Hyderabad in the year 2011. He claimed after Calaid’s assurance of a good job, Cindy quit her job and came to Mumbai. They got married in 2012. However, he claimed after two years Calaid started harassing her. He also claimed Calaid was unemployed. Jai Prakash asked the Malad police to register a case of abetment to suicide against Calaid. “During a house search we found a suicide note in which Cindy has stated that she was in a serious financial crisis and could not handle the situation anymore. She has said she is willfully taking the step, no one is to be blamed for this. Initially we registered an ADR. Further enquiry is on, we will take proper action,” said an officer from Malad Police station. Also read: Suicide or overdose? 37-year-old woman found dead in Amboli flat Calaid claimed Cindy wanted to break up with him, but he did not want to break up with her. However, he moved out on March 4 and claims he gave her money for deposit and two months rent in advance for the place at Eugene society. He said, “From April 23 she stopped all communication with me. Probably, because I was unemployed. After that I began to get calls from my friends that she was avoiding their calls. Apparently she had borrowed money from them and hadn’t returned it. I also got a call from her landlord saying she had not paid him. On May 6, I went to the Malad police station to tell them about this. But they said we should settle the matter ourselves. On May 9, I sent a written complaint by post to them asking for an enquiry into her actions.” Calaid also denied all her brother’s allegations including the fact that he beat her up and that he had extra marital affairs.

A 'privilege and inspiration' to be mentioned by PM: Eugeneson Lyngdoh New Delhi: Days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed Meghalaya for its contribution to Indian football, a national team member from that state, Eugeneson Lyngdoh yesterday said "it's a privilege and an inspiration" to be mentioned by name by the head of the government of the country. In a recent visit to Meghalaya, Prime Minister Modi made a mention of Lyngdoh, Aiborlang Khongjee and Marlanki Suting as players from Meghalaya who have done the country proud and praised the state for its contribution to Indian football. Khongjee and Suting have also played for the country in the past. "It was surprising to know that the Prime Minister of the country knows about footballers from the North East. A mention from the Prime Minister is the cherry on the cake. It's a motivation to further excel. It's a feeling which cannot be described," Lyngdoh, who operates in the midfield said. "At the same time, it's a message to entire footballing fraternity about the support from the Prime Minister himself. It's such an inspiration that he spoke about football. It's a privilege. I am so happy that I was able to make my family proud. My parents, brothers, sisters and all are so excited. Thank you Modi ji for all your support," Lyngdoh was quoted as saying by the official website of All India Football Federation. Lyngdon, the 2014 AIFF 2014 Player of the Year, is currently in Vientaine for India's 2019 AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers play-off match against Laos on June 2. He also said that the Prime Minister's mention of the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup in his 'Mann Ki Baat' will also "inspire the younger generation". "The support from the honourable Prime Minister will make the kids more passionate about Indian football. They will look forward to making a career in football in the future," said Lyngdoh. Talking about India's match against Laos, Lyngdoh said it's a do-or-die match which will have a bearing on how many international matches India gets to play in the near future. "It's a very important match for Indian football. It will decide our calendar for the next couple of years -- whether the national team would have international engagements or not. It's do or die," he said.

Brisbane's Gabba retains Test status Sydney: Brisbane's Gabba ground will host Test cricket for at least another three years, it was announced Tuesday, in daunting news for teams visiting Australia. Cricket Australia said a deal had been reached to play a Test annually at the venue until the end of the 2018-19 season, as well as a one-day or each season for the next three years. Australia has a formidable record at the Gabba, nicknamed the 'Gabbatoir' and known for its heat, fast wicket and unforgiving, partisan crowd. The hosts have not lost a Test at the venue, in Brisbane's Woolloongabba district, since going down to Viv Richards' great West Indies side in 1988. "Australia's record at the Gabba has been exceptional and the fact we remain undefeated at the Gabba since 1988 underlines that record," said CA general manager Pat Howard. "As a consequence the Australian players always look forward to a Gabba Test. " The ground will this year host its first day-night Test with a pink ball, against Pakistan in December, with a bumper crowd expected.

Sunil Gavaskar hails 'original Captain Cool' Ajit Wadekar India's batting legend Sunil Gavaskar paid rich tributes to his first Ranji Trophy and Test captain Ajit Wadekar right opposite Shivaji Park, the nursery of Mumbai cricket yesterday. Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis (left) felicitates Ajit Wadekar yesterday. Pic/Suresh Karkera "I never saw Ajit (Wadekar) angry or use a harsh word to anyone. I never saw him lose his cool. I don't know how much MS has taken from him, but I think the original Captain Cool was Ajit Wadekar," said Sunil Gavaskar at a felicitation function for the former India skipper who completed 75 on April 1. "For the leadership qualities he (Wadekar) had, he never got much recognition. He was always called a lucky captain and I can never understand that. The way he took decisions by taking other players into confidence was amazing," Gavaskar added. Pravin Amre, the former India batsman, who toured South Africa in 1992-93 with Wadekar as Cricket Manager, said: "I got a chance to play my first Test against South Africa because of sir. Encouraging Amre "There was a perception that I could only play well against spinners, but he gave me a chance on a difficult Durban wicket, known for its pace and bounce. At that time, sir was the only person who stood by me and gave me confidence," said Amre who scored 103 on Test debut against a formidable SA attack led by Allan Donald. Former India captain Mohd Azharuddin, who formed a fine captain-cricket manager combination with Wadekar, recalled Wadekar being "very humble, but strict too. " "Sir always encouraged us to win. When we lost a match during the 1992 series against South Africa, he laid down a curfew. No one could step out of their room after 10 pm. He is a father figure for me," said Azhar. Wadekar turned back the clock too — to the time when he earned R3 for being 12th man for his first inter-college match. "The Ruia College team was in need of a 12th man, so someone told me that I would get R3 for being 12th man. I realise now that those three rupees gave me a large number of friends," he said.

Yannick Noah hails Richard Gasquet's 'dream' French Open display Paris: French Davis Cup captain Yannick Noah hailed Richard Gasquet's progress to the Roland Garros quarter- finals as the 29-year-old tries to become the country's first male Grand Slam singles champion since 1983. Noah's triumph at the French Open 33 years ago remains the last time a Frenchman won a major, but Gasquet's performances in Paris this year have generated reason for optimism. The world number 12 dispatched Japanese fifth seed Kei Nishikori in four sets to make the last eight at Roland Garros for the first time in 13 attempts. "Aside from the result, I loved the match Richard played (on Sunday), he played very a good match like I'd dreamed of seeing him play," said Noah. "Richard has been playing better and better the last month and a half, he had a difficult start to the season because of injury. It's maturity on one side as well as having a very good group of people around him. "With Sebastien Grosjean for the fast surfaces and Sergi (Bruguera), it's a team that works. " However, standing between Gasquet and a place in the semi-finals is second seed Andy Murray, who has reached the last four in Paris on three occasions. "Murray has had his ups and downs so far this season, with times when he's been untouchable and beating everyone and other moments when he's been playable," said Noah. "If Richard plays at the same level as he did (on Sunday), it's going to be a great match. " Since Noah defeated Mats Wilander to claim the French Open title -- in the same year Michael Jackson's "Thriller" hit number one in the US charts on its way to becoming the biggest-selling album in history -- only Henri Leconte in 1988 has returned to the final at Roland Garros. Three other Frenchmen -- Cedric Pioline, Arnaud Clement and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga -- have come close to ending the drought at other Grand Slams only to fall short. Pioline reached the 1993 US Open and 1997 Wimbledon finals, while Arnaud Clement (2001) and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (2008) both finished as runners-up at the Australian Open. Gasquet remains the lone French player left in either draw, the pressure of trying to become just the third Frenchman to win Roland Garros since World War II weighing heavily on his shoulders. "I'm just on the biggest court in the world for a French tennis player. It's really important for me to succeed there. "

Nick Kyrgios slams Pat Cash for 'ditch social media' advice Paris: Enigmatic Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios has laughed off suggestions he should quit social media to focus on his game after Australian great and Wimbledon winner Pat Cash urged the young star to take his match preparation more seriously. Australian Nick Kyrgios Kyrgios refuted suggestion that his social media habits are distracting him from tennis, reports Xinhua. "Haha, 'ditch social media,' can people keep their opinions to themselves please. Leave me alone. This is my last tweet for you Cashy," the World No 19 tweeted yesterday. Earlier, Cash suggested the 21-year-old delete his Twitter account, use that social media time to practice harder, and stop reading newspapers to make a push into tennis' top 10. Pat Cash He said Kyrgios' interaction with his 1,57,000 Twitter followers was only taking time off preparing for big matches, such as those at the ongoing French Open. "Everything that wasn't involved in me improving as a tennis player was a distraction to me," Cash said, speaking of his own experience. "So I just focused on being the best I could be. That (meant) working hard," Cash said. "I did less and less media and I wasn't all that popular doing that, but in the end you walk away and get invited to events (held for former grand slam winners). "I've got my name on a couple of (winners') boards somewhere, that's what I play for, to be successful and be the best I can be. It'd be a pity for Nick not to do that," he added.

French Open: Rain shelters struggling Novak Djokovic during last-16 Paris: World No 1 Novak Djokovic dropped the first set of his French Open last- 16 clash against Roberto Bautista Agut before heavy rain came to his rescue yesterday. Novak Djokovic The top seed, chasing an elusive first title in Paris and a career Grand Slam, came onto Court Philippe Chatrier with light rain still falling. Only 37 minutes of play was possible, but in that time the Serb star was broken three times while carving out two breaks of his own. The 29-year-old will cross the $100 million career prize money barrier if he makes a 10th Roland Garros quarter-final. But having lost the first set 6-3 in heavy, slow conditions, he was relieved to leave behind the ghostly show court at 1245 local time (1045GMT) where just a smattering of spectators, huddled beneath umbrellas, braved the miserable chill. Yesterday's schedule had already been delayed by an hour after Monday's programme was washed away, the first such wipeout in 16 years. 34 Art Of Living: It is not the amount, it is the principle The Art of Living (AOL), led by spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, has been given a rap on the knuckles told to pay R4.75 crore as a fine, the country’s top green court said yesterday, following it up with some trenchant criticism of the AOL. The AOL had been given the green signal with the three- day ‘World Culture Festival’ on the banks of the River Yamuna in March this year, on the condition that it would pay a Rs 5-crore penalty for damage to the area’s ecosystem. The Culture Festival opened after the last gasp controversy playing host to thousands including PM Narendra Modi. Not so 'fine' with us: AOL's Sri Sri Ravi Shankar At that time, AOL had paid up Rs 25 lakh saying they would pay the rest. They then asked that the Rs 4.75 crore they owed be treated as a bank guarantee. Yesterday, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) accused AOL of using the court order to hold the event, and then go back on its word. The sum is not too much for Sri Sri’s organization to cough up, hardly an amount which will make the yoga and meditation enthusiasts suck in their collective breaths in dismay, “but, it is not the sum it is the principle,” said AOL’s legal advisor, Ketan Desai. Desai also accused the media of being very enthusiastic about using the term ‘fine’ but this sum is a ‘compensation deposit’ not a fine. When asked whether they were trying to use words simply to obfuscate the issue he stated, “it is important to clarify as the word fine implies that we (AOL) has done something wrong, when in fact, it has not. Tell me which act or rule have we violated?” he asked. Desai added that they were “unhappy” with the judgement. It is not about, “the amount being big or small,” said Desai when reminded that R4.75 crore was well within the means of the mega organization with thousands of well-heeled followers. The Art of Living has never said that we don’t have funds. “This is about standing up for the truth,” he stated, rather dramatically. Desai said AOL was unhappy about the pre-assessment of the site, which was, “done unscientifically, where the site was pre-judged and an amount was fixed.” The AOL had filed an application to reconstitute an independent and an unbiased expert committee to examine the impact of the World Culture Festival, on the Yamuna floodplains on the ground that the existing committee had prejudged the issue, and created a self imposed bias for itself. The NGT yesterday offered to appoint two more members on the Committee on the condition that we withdraw our application, and give up the grounds taken in it. We chose to argue our application as this committee had arrived at an arbitrary figure of Rs 120 crore based on a very brief ‘visual’ assessment. It has pre-judged the issue, they are currently under self-imposed pressure to justify that figure, and have definitely created a bias for itself. The application for reconstitution of the committee will now be taken up on July 4. In the meantime the existing committee has been asked to do the inspection, the findings of which will be kept with the court in a sealed cover till July 4. The AOL added that any competent independent body could have come to assess the impact of our event on the Yamuna floodplains. Desai, when told that there was a feeling that AOL had got away with holding the festival, and was now trying to wiggle out without paying, called allegations as “bald allegations by the media,” and advised, “visit the site of the Culture Festival. It was once full of rubble, today it is green and full of flora and fauna.”

From now on... its European football-like system for Team India Pune: It's been quite some time since the BCCI started appointing specialist coaches for every department of the game. And although the trend might continue in the future, things might be set to go the European soccer style soon, if the statement of the recently appointed BCCI secretary Ajay Shirke is anything to go by. Ajay Shirke From here on, the support staff of the Indian cricket team would be at the chief coach's discretion, the BCCI's secretary Ajay Shirke has confirmed. The statement, made at a meet the press in Pune yesterday, also confirmed that there will be no Team Director with the team in the near future. "We are going to appoint a chief coach. We don't want to burden him with 'this guy or that guy'. Once the chief coach is appointed, we will ask him who else he wants on board. "Then we can catch hold of him and ask him about the performance (should the results not go their way)," Shirke added. That's very much how the European soccer league club's work, with the Manager (read chief coach in cricketing terms), taking full responsibility. The statement also makes it clear that the support staff that was employed till the end of the World T20, including Sanjay Bangar, Bharat Arun, would be out of a job, unless the new chief coach asks for their services. Bangar was recently appointed as the head coach for a second string Indian side that will tour Zimbabwe in June. Ravi Shastri (right) with then India coach Duncan Fletcher during a practice session at Trent Bridge, England in 2014. Pic/Getty Images 'No decision about conducting a mini-IPL' Shirke also clarified that there has been no decision about conducting a mini-IPL in September. "I am not aware of any such development," he said. The Board's technical committee has recommended that Ranji Trophy matches be conducted at neutral venues. And while reminding that it's just a recommendation at this stage, the BCCI secretary clarified the logic behind the decision. "The meeting, headed by Sourav Ganguly, lasted for over two and half hours. Various other options, including the visiting team making the choice of whether to bat first, were discussed. Eventually it was felt that playing games at neutral venues was the best available option. "It takes away the 'home crowd' part, but then every option had a negative side to it. There is no clear solution to the problem of home teams preparing favourable tracks, which can satisfy everyone. " Shirke added that the BCCI will identify tracks that are recognised as sporting, and the Ranji games will be played at those venues. 2016-06-01 10:00 By Shreeram www.mid-day.com

Celebrated passage through India It was almost a regal passage through India for one of international fashion’s reigning queens, Fern Mallis, the influential former executive director of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), and the lady who created New York Fashion Week. Mallis is an old India hand, her love for the country presumably stoked when she had been Senior Vice President of IMG Fashion and it had played a significant role in nurturing the nascent India Fashion Week. Fern Mallis, Wendell Rodricks, Sabyasachi, Sandeep Khosla and Abu Jani Editors of glossies, designers and show biz stars in India and abroad have long regarded the Brooklyn-based Mallis as a visionary, and so no surprises that her most recent trip to the country was a mini fashion week of its own which saw her being feted by India’s best. Kicked off by a dinner at Abu Sandeep’s leafy apartment in Juhu, the Goa leg of her visit saw the recipient of the Pratt Institute’s 2012 Fashion Industry Lifetime Achievement Award being feted at many beautiful Goan haciendas, including one which featured designer Wendell Roderick’s birthday dinner. What’s more the fashion maven’s engagement with India’s fashion frat does not end there. Next month at the prestigious CFDA annual awards an event considered the Holy Grail of Fashion Oscars, we hear designer Sabyasachi is making an outfit that Mallis will wear on the red carpet. And given that the awards recognise outstanding contributions made to American fashion by individuals from all areas of the industry and related arts; it will be another significant showcasing of the best of Indian fashion in the international spotlight. What will Sabyasachi design? Mercifully, no ball gowns expected here for sure! Blue Chip Affair It was said to be a true blue Mumbai ‘clubby’ event when the brainchild of Sanjiv Saran Mehra, which is said to be the world’s longest running and largest corporate cricket 7s championship, recently completed 20 years. Sanjiv Saran Mehra (in blue) The celebrations included the annual CEOs Challenge match, in which Ajay Srinivasan CEO, Aditya Birla Financial Services Group, captain of the winning team lifted the trophy, and was awarded the Man of the Match. The other participants were equally blue chipped, Sanjiv Mehta MD Unilever India; Ravi Chawla MD Gulf Oil, India; Shailesh Ayyangar MD, Sanofi- Aventis India and Russell Perreira (Partner, PWC) all donned their cricket colours and batted await to glory! Candle in the wind This is an exercise in live reporting. As we write this, we are inhaling the aroma of New York-based hostess socialite and philanthropist Meera Gandhi’s ‘Giving candle,’ the one she describes as the ‘best scent in the world.’ Meera Gandhi The olfactory passion, which Gandhi is caught up with currently, is connected to her philanthropic interests which is a perfume called Giving, the sale proceeds of which will go to Gandhi’s NGO The Giving Back Foundation. Made after years of her personal involvement in laboratories around the world it is redolent with ‘Sicilian bergamot, Egyptian Jasmine Absolute, Heliotrope (French Sunflower), myrrh oil from Namibia, South American tonka beans, sandalwood from Mysore, Vanilla Bourbon (Reunion) with a spin off candle. She says “After 5 years of testing, this is finally available for you to enjoy! I promise you only the best because I demand only the best from life!” So are we experiencing the ‘sweet scent of generosity’ as we write this right now? Well, at least we are writing about candles and not scandals... Man in the centre If a picture is worth a thousand words, than this one featuring Sahara Sri Subrata Roy, the out on bail tycoon surrounded by his family, friends and employees and looking very much like a demi God with his head shorn in respect to his recent bereavement and clad in a pristine white shawl, is worth at least Rs 200 crore. Subrata Roy Why so? Because that is allegedly the amount that Roy is said to have deposited to SEBI as bail for his parole to be extended to 11 July. And going by the steely resolve in his eye and the inner calm in his stance, his recent incarceration and financial woes do not appear to have bowed the controversial biz man’s spirit much. DJ Dev? Dev Patel the affable Indian actor, whose professional success appears to be a scene straight out of his debut film, Slumdog Millionaire, is said to have walked into Juhu’s Trilogy over the weekend and by all accounts endeared himself to the crowd there. Dev Patel and friends “He waited patiently for the guestlist and didn’t throw any starry tantrums asking himself to be let in just because he is a celebrity,” says an eyewitness. “Once inside he couldn’t get enough of the DJ’s console and he sportingly said a few words in the mic to pump up the crowd,” says the source who informs that the actor was accompanied by a couple of friends who did not appear to be from the industry. And the icing on the cake? Trilogy played ‘Paper Planes’ from Slumdog Millionaire in honour of the exuberant star. 38 Report: Israeli decree calls on Wakf to end 'damaging' Temple Mount construction An Israeli government order issued Tuesday called on the Wakf trust that oversees Islamic holy sites to halt construction work on the Temple Mount that is damaging valuable ancient artifacts found in the area, Israel Radio reported Thursday. According to the report, the decree cites Israel Antiquities Authority warnings that the Wakf's building structures and activities along the perimeter wall of the contested holy compound are destructive. The Jerusalem Municipality issued the order that the Prime Minister's Office approved in an emergency meeting. The Israel Radio report also cited the lawyer representing a group of Jewish residents seeking a building license in the predominantly Palestinian neighborhood of Silwan as complaining that the edict against the Wakf would invalidate their permit. A discussion on the matter was reported expected to take place in the coming days.

Joy for Bobby Charlton as Man United boss Jose Mourinho visits training ground London: Jose Mourinho made peace with Bobby Charlton as Manchester United's new manager met the Old Trafford icon at the club's Carrington training ground on Monday. Man Utd legend Bobby Charlton and Man Utd manager Jose Mourinho Charlton has previously been a harsh critic of Mourinho and was understood to have objected to his potential appointment when United were looking for a successor to Alex Ferguson in 2013. The 78-year-old, a member of United's board of directors, also criticised Mourinho in 2012 for poking Barcelona's assistant coach Tito Vilanova in the eye during a heated touchline clash, saying at the time: "A United manager wouldn't do that. Mourinho is a really good coach, but that's as far as I would go really. He pontificates too much for my liking. He's a good manager, though. " But, despite Charlton's criticism, United finally turned to Mourinho last week, hiring the former Chelsea manager after the failed regimes of David Moyes and Louis van Gaal. With Mourinho being taken on a tour of United's training base, it could have been an awkward moment when he met Charlton, but the 53-year-old Portuguese was keen to bury the hatchet. Mourinho shared a warm embrace with Charlton and, in reference to the United legend's goals in England's semi-final victory over Portugal in the 1966 World Cup jokingly told him: "You killed my country's dream in 1966 but even so, all the best. " Charlton responded by saying: "I am very happy to see you here" before Mourinho told him to save the kind words until he starts winning games.. Mourinho is scheduled to start work with those United players who are not involved in Euro 2016 or the Copa America when they report back for pre- season training on July 4.

Mumbai Diary: Wednesday Dossier Win and loo-se A little ahead of Dahanu, on the outskirts of Mumbai, is an isolated village called Karvale. It might be off most people’s radars, but Mumbai’s KC College students have changed the lives of its residents. Students from KC College at work In 2005, under KC’s National Service Scheme (NSS), 300 students adopted the village. One of those adoption duties included upping hygiene levels by building toilets. In the last decade, the NSS unit has built 48 toilets in the area. Just recently, the same unit finished building seven new toilets in the neighbouring village of Ghatim. The students had been working on this project since December 2015. The complex of seven toilets was built for Sane Guruji Vidhyalaya. 42 Zimbabwe sack coach Dav Whatmore, skipper Masakadza ahead of India tour : Ahead of the limited overs series against India, Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) yesterday made sweeping changes by sacking coach Dav Whatmore and skipper Hamilton Masakadza and named former South Africa pacer Makhaya Ntini and Graeme Cremer as interim coach and captain of the side. Dav Whatmore The cricket body cited the team's poor performance in the ICC World Twenty20 as the reason for sacking Whatmore and Masakadza. Zimbabwe failed to make it out of the preliminary stage in the tournament. Whatmore, who was handed a four-year contract in April last year will now be replaced by bowling coach Ntini on interim basis. "Head coach Davenell Whatmore has had his contract terminated with immediate effect," a statement from Zimbabwe Cricket read. "The board has also relieved Zimbabwe top-order batsman Hamilton Masakadza of the captaincy for all three formats of the game. His deputy, Graeme Cremer, will act in the interim," it added. Zimbabwe have also signed former South Africa all-rounder Lance Klusener as batting coach for two years. Zimbabwe play India in three one-day internationals and as many Twenty20 internationals, starting June 11 at the Harare Sports Club here.

30-year-old steals wife's jewellery, frames domestic help for theft A 30-year-old man who had lodged a complaint against his domestic help of robbery turned out to be the thief himself. Ankush Shrish Sangoi, a Dubai-based businessman confessed to the Charkop police that he stole his wife’s diamond rings, Rolex watches and Rs 65 lakh. Representational picture Ankush and his wife, Sneha (28), married in January this year, and have been living in Mumbai since then. On May 18, Ankush filed an FIR against Raju Dahiwala, his domestic help, of robbery after his wife found her jewellery missing. A case was registered under section 381 (theft by clerk or servant of property in possession of master) of the IPC. Dahiwala, in his statement, said he had left Ankush’s flat at 7 pm that day and was unaware of what happened later. He and his wife work in more than nine flats in the housing society and all vouched for their integrity. Ankush, meanwhile, left for Dubai on May 20 and police searched his flat repeatedly and found that the three diamond rings, which had gone missing, used to be kept in the bedroom drawer. The watches were kept in the safe, and the location of the keys was only known to the couple. That was when the police realised that this could not have been Dahiwala’s handiwork. “A person of Dahiwala’s status will be more interested in cash and not jewellery,” said a police officer. To pin down Ankush, his friends were questioned who revealed that he ran a financial company in Dubai and had suffered huge losses. He owed millions and arranged for loans time and again to return the same. “We asked him to come to the police station as soon as he lands in Mumbai. He understood that his game was up, so he confessed right away that this whole thing was his plan. He also said that he wants to withdraw the complaint,” said an officer from the Charkop police station. The police will however take a legal opinion before deciding the further course of action.

EU warns Israel continued Palestinians home demolitions will harm ties The European Union has warned Israel that its policy of demolishing illegal Palestinians homes — including construction it has funded — is harming ties between Israel and its 28-member states. It issued it’s warning at a closed door meeting last week between EU officials in Israel and representatives from the office of the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories. Among those present were EU Ambassador to Israel Lars Faaborg Andersen and COGAT head Maj. Gen Yoav Mordechai. Earlier this month the EU issued a very public condemnation of such activity, particularly against Beduin in the E1 area of the Ma’aleh Adumim settlement, just outside of Jerusalem. “The regrettable trend of confiscations and demolitions since the beginning of the year, including of EU-funded humanitarian assistance, was confirmed once again this week by demolitions of temporary shelters in Jabal al-Baba, a Bedouin community in the so-called E1 area,” the EU said. “The EU is strongly opposed to Israel's settlement policy and actions taken in this context, including demolitions and confiscations, building the separation barrier beyond the 1967 line, evictions and forced transfers,” it said. “Such developments in the so-called E1 area call into question Israel's commitment towards the two-state solution,” the EU said. Israel has argued that the structures are illegal and must therefore be removed. Right wing politicians and activists have heavily criticized COGAT and the Civil Administration for failing to deal with the growing number of illegal Palestinian structures, particularly in the area of E1 and along the Route 1 corridor as it stretches between Jerusalem and Jericho. They have argued that the Palestinians are creating facts on the ground, to de facto take hold of portions of Area C in the West Bank for a future Palestinian state. They are particularly concerned that Palestinian terrorists may be able to use those illegal encampment to attack motorists on Route 1. UN Special envoy to the Middle East Peace Process Nickolay Mladenov told the UN Security Council last week that the number of structures the IDF has demolished or confiscated across the West Bank in 2016, exceeds the total for all of 2015. “At least 900 people have been displaced. Although many of the structures that have been demolished are not dwellings, the loss of water wells, solar panels and animal shelters has impacted the livelihoods of over 2,500 people,” he said. Israeli-EU relations were tense last year, precisely around the issues of settlement construction and Israeli demolitions of Palestinians structures and homes. Quite a number of them were modular dwellings funded by the EU who holds that such construction falls under the rubric of humanitarian assistance. Right wing activists in particular have targeted Faaborg Andersen, accusing him of supporting terrorism and have even published a short video comparing him to a cannibal. A spokesman for the EU delegation in Israel said of last week’s meeting with COGAT, that is “covered a wide range of issues. Its regrettable that the partial reports that emerged from it gave a somewhat distorted impression. Both sides “found the meeting to be constructive” and further discussion will take place in the future, he said.

I’d Also Consider Voting for David French | The American Spectator A couple of days ago, I indicated that I’m considering casting my vote this November for Libertarian presidential candidate Gary Johnson, something which annoyed the Village Voice’s Roy Edroso (who finds nearly everything I write to be annoying). Please note my concluding sentence in the Johnson piece: Which brings me to David French of NRO. I read his stuff regularly. I don’t always agree with his arguments, but what he has to say is usually worth my time. Somehow I doubt he was Bill Kristol’s first choice as a presidential candidate. That’s not a knock on French. I’m sure Kristol and crew approached Mitt Romney, Ben Sasse, Condi Rice and possibly dozens of others before turning their attention to French. If French does choose to throw his hat in the ring he will be in for a lot of grief from Trump and his followers, especially those associated with the racist alt.right movement already angry at French for adopting an African- American daughter. Naturally, French will also get the usual grief from The Left. Should French agree to be a candidate, this will take a lot of guts on his part and for that matter his family as well. Well, I’m sure this will annoy Edroso even further. Should French announce his candidacy, I would be willing to consider casting my vote for him as well. While I disagree with some of French’s positions on gay marriage and some of his arguments concerning religious liberty, I am far more in sync with him where it concerns foreign policy than I am with Johnson. If French is willing to put himself out there then I’m willing to listen. I cannot say so for either or Hillary Clinton. Of course, it could be a moot point if French doesn’t get on the ballot here in Massachusetts (whereas Johnson’s name will be on the ballot in all 50 states). Given the late date, it is unclear how many states where French will pass the muster. It could be the case that French would only concentrate on a handful of Southern and/or swing states where he could deny Trump a triumph. We shall see. If worse comes to worst and French’s name doesn’t appear on our ballot in the Bay State and I find Johnson unsatisfactory, I could always follow my Mom’s advice and write in Groucho Marx’s name. Rufus T. Firefly to the rescue indeed. Still, it remains to be seen if French will be a candidate at all. No word as to when he will make a decision, but it’s going to have to be sooner rather than later.

Ramaphosa: Violence in Parliament demonstrates disdain for the will of the people “Particularly by efforts to prevent President Jacob Zuma from addressing the house‚” he added. In a statement on “the current situation in Parliament”‚ whose second term concluded last week‚ Ramaphosa said: “Cabinet has undertaken a review of the current environment in Parliament and its impact on government's programme of transformation.” He cited amongst the successes of the “first two parliamentary terms of the year” that Parliament has continued to “process transformative legislation‚ scrutinise the activities of departments and other state institutions and deliberate on matters of national importance”‚ and “passed a national budget that sustains government's programme to tackle poverty and promote economic growth”. But‚ added Ramaphosa: “Despite the valuable work done in this Fifth Democratic Parliament‚ recent events in Parliament are a grave cause for concern. “Proceedings have been disrupted on a number of occasions in a manner that undermines the proper functioning of Parliament. “Of particular concern‚ is the violent nature of some of these disruptions. Refusal to adhere to the rules of the assembly undermines the integrity of the institution and demonstrates disdain for the will of the people. “The efforts of a small minority of MPs to impose‚ through force and intimidation‚ their will on Parliament reflects a contempt for the principles of democracy. “While claiming to be exercising free expression they are effectively denying the free expression of others. The ability of the executive to account has been undermined‚ particularly by efforts to prevent President Jacob Zuma from addressing the house. That said‚ Ramaphosa added that “Cabinet welcomes the determination of the majority of MPs to respect the rules‚ uphold the dignity and advance the transformative work of Parliament”. This would require all parties to “work together to ensure that the rules and procedures are applied consistently‚ fairly‚ and without fear‚ favour or prejudice”. “As the executive‚ we reject in the strongest terms any attempt‚ in whatever form‚ to suppress debate or silence dissent.” In an apparent of opposition parties’ claims that ministers had evaded questions in the assembly‚ Ramaphosa said they had in fact “responded well to a substantial increase in the number of questions for written reply”. “In 2009‚ over 2000 written questions were put to Ministers‚ while by the end of 2015‚ the total number exceeded 4000. “Even with this significant increase‚ the proportion of questions answered each year has exceeded 95%.” – TMG Digital

World's longest and deepest rail tunnel to open in Switzerland The world's longest and deepest rail tunnel is to be officially opened in Switzerland, after almost two decades of construction work. The 57km (35-mile) twin-bore Gotthard base tunnel will provide a high- speed rail link under the Swiss Alps between northern and southern Europe. Switzerland says it will revolutionise European freight transport. Goods currently carried on the route by a million lorries a year will go by train instead. Switzerland's engineering triumph The tunnel will overtake Japan's 53.9 km Seikan rail tunnel as the longest in the world and push the 50.5 km Channel Tunnel linking the UK and France into third place. German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Francois Hollande and Italy's Prime Minister Matteo Renzi will join Swiss officials at the grand opening. "It is just part of the Swiss identity," federal transport office director Peter Fueglistaler told Reuters news agency. "For us, conquering the Alps is like the Dutch exploring the oceans. " The project, which cost more than $12bn (£8.3bn) to build, was endorsed by Swiss voters in a referendum in 1992. Voters then backed a proposal from environmental groups to move all freight travelling through Switzerland from road to rail two years later. The completed tunnel travels up to 2.3 km below the surface of the mountains above and through rock that reaches temperatures of 46C. Engineers had to dig and blast through 73 different kinds of rock, some as hard as granite and others as soft as sugar. More than 28m tonnes of rock was excavated. Nine workers died during the work. Now the completed tunnel - delivered on time and within budget - will create a mainline rail connection between Rotterdam in the Netherlands and Genoa in Italy. When full services begin in December, the journey time for travellers between Zurich and Milan will be reduced by an hour to two hours and 40 minutes. Its trajectory will be flat and straight instead of winding up through the mountains like the old rail tunnel and a road tunnel opened in 1980. About 260 freight trains and 65 passenger trains will pass through the tunnel in as little as 17 minutes. The tunnel is being financed by value-added and fuel taxes, road charges on heavy vehicles and state loans that are due to be repaid within a decade. Swiss bank Credit Suisse has said its economic benefits will include the easier movement of goods and increased tourism.

Finland military exercise mistaken for invasion Finland's armed forces caused alarm on one of the country's own islands when an after-dark training exercise was mistaken for a real invasion, it's reported. Kamsholmen island resident Bjarne Winberg watched as a large boat docked near his house and unloaded a group of uniformed men carrying rucksacks and what looked like guns, the Ilta- Sanomat newspaper reports. When the group headed into the forest, Mr Winberg hopped into his own boat, fled the island and called the emergency services. "Of course I was scared," he tells the paper. It subsequently transpired that last week's unexpected late-night arrival, was part of the military's spring training exercises. What isn't clear is whether Kamsholmen was a planned stop on the military's route. While the local Ostnyland newspaper quoted a defence spokesman as saying the island wasn't meant to feature in the exercises, other reports suggest organisers had intended to land there but forgot to tell residents. There's some consolation for islanders who were worried by the non- invasion, though. Ostnyland reports that coffee brand Gevalia, long marketed as being ideal when faced with "unexpected visitors", has spotted an unlikely marketing opportunity in the news. The company says it will send free packs of coffee to anyone who had "unexpected military guests". 53 Analysis: Zigzagging on the Arab peace initiative Some heard Benjamin Netanyahu’s comments on Monday night that he is ready to negotiate based on the 2002 Arab Peace Initiative as totally insignificant, because he has said as much in the past. Others – primarily those close to the prime minister – see those remarks as a portent of a new peace drive. And the truth? Somewhere in the middle. Yes, Netanyahu has given a nod to the Arab Peace Initiative before. He did so soon after taking office in 2009, saying during a reception in Herzliya at the home of the Egyptian ambassador that Israel “valued efforts of Arab states to advance peace initiatives, and if these offers are not final offers, then I believe this spirit can create an atmosphere in which a comprehensive peace is possible.” Netanyahu said the spirit of reconciliation in this initiative was an important change from the spirit of Khartoum, where the conference of 13 Arab leaders immediately after the Six Day War was held, at which the Arab world said no to peace, recognition or negotiations with Israel. So, no, what he said Monday night – that the plan “contains positive elements that can help restore constructive negotiations with the Palestinians” – was not a revolutionary break with his past positions. He added, “We are ready to negotiate with the Arab states on an updated initiative that reflects the dramatic regional changes that have occurred since 2002,” but which “maintain the agreed upon goal of two states for two peoples.” But this reiteration of what he said seven years ago is not completely void of significance either, because in the past he has dismissed the plan as a relic both from, and for, a different era. For instance, in a September 2014 interview with The Jerusalem Post, when asked if he would be willing to accept the Saudi initiative now, he replied: “The question is not the Saudi peace initiative. If you read it carefully, you’ll see it was set up in another period: before the rise of Hamas; before Hamas took over Gaza; before ISIS took over chunks of Syria and Iraq, effectively dismantling those countries; before ’s accelerated nuclear program. Before the takeover of Syria by al-Qaida on the Golan Heights.” Pressed whether he believes the plan is now irrelevant, he said, “What is relevant, I think, is the fact there is a new recognition among major countries in the Middle East that Israel is not their mortal enemy, to say the least, but is a potential ally in addressing the common challenges. And whether we can translate that recognition of a political horizon into a realistic peace proposal – a realistic peace proposal – is something worth exploring. But I don’t think more can be said at this point.” What was interesting about Netanyahu’s position on the matter then, was that it was articulated in an apparent effort to distance himself somewhat from his foreign minister at the time, Avigdor Liberman, who made news a few weeks earlier for telling the Post the initiative could form a “basis” for arranging Israel’s relations with the Arab world, as long as it does not include any reference to a Palestinian right of return. “I think the Saudi initiative is much more relevant today than it was previously,” Liberman said, adding that the central idea behind the initiative was not only an agreement between Israel and the Palestinians, but also an arrangement with the entire Arab world. For Liberman, this was a departure from his past positions on the matter. After formally adding Liberman to his government, to the concern and chagrin of much of the world who now views that government as dangerously right-wing, it should have been expected that he would immediately take at least rhetorical steps to try and ease those concerns. By nodding to an updated Arab Peace Initiative – an initiative that he has both accepted and rejected in the past – he sought to do just that. With Liberman concurring with his comments, he may also have wanted to present Liberman as a figure far less intransigent than what the world perceives. But for Liberman this was no real concession – he has made these comments in the past. The 2002 initiative, backed by all 22 members of the Arab League, calls for a complete Israeli withdrawal to the 1967 lines, including on the Golan Heights and in east Jerusalem, as well as a “just” solution to the Palestinian refugee problem, in return for normalization of relations. In 2013 an Arab League delegation visiting Washington said it would accept “minor” land swaps on the basis of the 1967 lines. Israel’s position is that it is willing to negotiate with the Arab states regarding this initiative, but that it should not be seen as a-take-it-or-leave-it proposition. Netanyahu’s challenge in his new embrace of the Arab plan will not be to convince Liberman. 54 Homecoming begins for residents of fire- ravaged Canadian city Rachel Notley said that the wildfire is no longer an imminent threat to the city and critical infrastructure has been repaired. The massive wildfire destroyed about 2,400 structures almost a month ago in Fort McMurray but 90 percent of the city remains intact. Residents of three neighborhoods won't be able to return because of environmental concerns. The massive wildfire burning in Alberta, Canada is now nicknamed "The Beast. " Fortunately, cooler temperatures and weaker winds in recent days ha... A boil water advisory remains in effect and many businesses will not be open. Notley urged residents to bring food, water and any other supplies needed for the next two weeks. Scott Long, executive director of the Alberta emergency management agency, pleaded for patience and asked residents to respect their zone date for an orderly return. He estimated that 40 to 50 percent of residents will return this week and warned of travel delays. The fire and mass evacuation forced a quarter or more of Canada's oil output offline. Canada's central bank said last week the Canadian economy will shrink in the second quarter because of the wildfire. The Alberta oil sands have the third-largest reserves of oil in the world behind Saudi Arabia and . Its workers largely live in Fort McMurray, a former frontier outpost-turned-city whose residents come from all over Canada. Kevin Lewis is anxious to get back into his apartment in Thickwood, a relatively undamaged neighborhood that's slated to reopen on Friday. Lewis has been unable to run his transportation brokerage business since the evacuation and he figures he's lost some $40,000 over the last month. Smoke and flames from the wildfires erupt behind a car on the highway near Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada, May 7, 2016. "I definitely need to get to work," Lewis said from Lac La Biche, Alberta, a small town about 2 1/2 hours southeast of Fort McMurray that's taken in thousands of evacuees. Lewis knows it's a possibility that smoke damage may have rendered his place uninhabitable. It's already burned 400,000 acres and destroyed more than 1,600 homes and businesses. Smoke from the fires is raising serious environmental conce... "If it's not really livable there yet, I could at least be able to grab my computers and I'll be able to work," he said. Jim Mandeville, senior project manager with FirstOnSite Restoration, has been in Fort McMurray since May 8 to help critical businesses such as banks, grocery stores and pharmacies get running again. Dozens of FirstOnSite workers have been working long days disposing of spoiled food, cleaning ventilation systems and removing smoky odors from upholstery and carpets. Mandeville said provincial and municipal officials aren't underplaying how challenging it will be for residents to return. "When they say to bring 14 days worth of food and water, they mean it. And when they say people with respiratory conditions shouldn't come up here, they mean it -- and they have a really good reason why," he said. "It is not a clean, safe, normal environment that you're walking into. "

A visit to Karachi's 'most dangerous' neighbourhood While filming a documentary in Karachi, Pakistan, BBC journalist Benjamin Zand had been told to avoid the neighbourhood of Lyari. It was the city's "most dangerous" area where "a number of things would probably happen" to him, he was warned. Benjamin went along anyway - and met some local children he said were "probably the most impressive kids I think I may ever have met". He was in Pakistan as part of a new BBC series which goes beyond the headlines to see the "other side" of places with bad reputations. The series will be released across the BBC in July/August. 56 Scores & Stats TORONTO -- Dellin Betances made an indelible first impression on Darwin Barney. "The first time I faced him was in New York (last week), and he made me look pretty stupid," Barney, the Toronto Blue Jays shortstop, said of the New York Yankees reliever. "He's a guy you have to really trust your approach pitch to pitch. He's one of the best in the game, and you try not to do too much, just go up there and try and play pepper. "Barney did just that Tuesday night to top off Toronto's three-run seventh inning. He pushed a two-run single to right field against the Yankees' hard- throwing right-hander to provide a three-run cushion for the Blue Jays on their way to a 4-1 victory. The previous batter, Kevin Pillar, gave the Blue Jays a 2-1 edge with a two-out single to right. Toronto (28-26) won the second time in a three-game series with the Yankees (24-27) that concludes Wednesday. "When guys throw that hard, you've really got to simplify some things and get the bat head on the ball somehow," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. "Shoot the ball the other way as both of them did. It's hard to do, though. "Toronto left-hander J. A. Happ allowed four hits, two walks and one run in six innings. He struck out three and did not factor in the decision. New York left-hander CC Sabathia (3-4) allowed five hits, one walk and two runs in six-plus innings. He struck out four in taking his second straight loss in the past week to Toronto. Justin Smoak homered for the Blue Jays. Rookie right-hander Joe Biagini (3-1) replaced Happ in the seventh inning and worked around a single by Didi Gregorius to pick up the win. Right-hander Roberto Osuna pitched the ninth inning to earn his 12th save of the season, allowing a single. Edwin Encarnacion led off the bottom of the seventh with a double to left center to start the winning rally. "I just made a bad 3-1 pitch right there," Sabathia said. "It's always surprising when these guys (the Yankees bullpen) give up runs. These guys are the best in the league. Nine times out of 10, they're going to be there to help us. "Betances replaced Sabathia. "With the leadoff double, I thought we needed a strikeout," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "We got it, and he got the next guy out. Unfortunately, a walk and a couple of base hits later, it's 4-1. "Betances struck out Smoak and retired Russell Martin on a fly to the warning track in left. Devon Travis then walked. Pillar singled to right to score Encarnacion and move Travis to third. Pillar stole second, and Barney singled to right to score two more runs. "Every time you step out of that box, you have to rethink your ideas about what he's trying to do to you," Barney said of Betances. "I was pretty lucky to get some barrel there. It was really good of him. I'll take it. "Girardi said, "It happens. I thought (Betances) did a good job. He got the two outs, and Encarnacion didn't move a base. Then the walk and then Pillar did a good job hitting the ball through the hole. "Toronto right-hander Jesse Chavez pitched a perfect eighth that ended with Barney, the shortstop playing in a shift, making a spectacular catch of a foul ball near the barrier in right field on Carlos Beltran. Pillar also made a spectacular diving catch on Austin Romine's liner in fourth. The Yankees scored its run in the second. Chase Headley led off with a double and took third on an infield single to second by Romine. Headley scored when Aaron Hicks grounded to second, forcing Romine at second base. Hicks beat the throw to first, avoiding the double play. Smoak tied the game with two outs in the fourth on his fifth homer of the season. The previous batter, Encarnacion, grounded into a double play following Josh Donaldson's leadoff single. NOTES: The Blue Jays obtained RHP Jason Grilli from the Braves plus cash considerations for RHP Sean Ratcliffe. Grilli, 39, was 1-2 with two saves and a 5.29 ERA in 21 games for Atlanta. ... Yankees INF/OF Dustin Ackley (torn labrum in right shoulder) has opted for season-ending surgery. He was injured Sunday. ... Blue Jays 2B Devon Travis returned Tuesday after getting Monday off. It was his sixth game since returning Thursday from the disabled list, where he started the season after having shoulder surgery in November. ... LHP Richard Bleier, 29, became the 12th Yankees pitcher since 1913 to make his major league debut after turning 29 in the 4-2 loss to the Blue Jays on Monday. He used three pitches to end the eighth inning on two groundouts. He became the 20th pitcher used this year by the Yankees. ... New York DH Alex Rodriguez, 0-for-14 against Toronto LHP J. A. Happ, was not in the lineup for the second straight game. INF Rob Refsnyder started in right field and RF Carlos Beltran was the DH. ... Yankees RHP Masahiro Tanaka (3-0, 2.89 ERA) faces Blue Jays RHP Aaron Sanchez (4-1, 3.29 ERA) in the series finale on Wednesday.

Documents show aggressive sales tactics at Trump University The "playbooks" for the now- defunct business owned by Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee for president, offer detailed sales scripts and tell employees how to overcome obstacles such as potential customers who have reached their credit card limits or want to check with a spouse before buying. The documents unsealed in San Diego were part of a lawsuit by customers who say they were defrauded. Last Friday, a judge who has earned Trump's scorn agreed with attorneys for The Washington Post that the public had a right to know what was previously confidential. Donald Trump made remarks Tuesday on the ongoing lawsuit against Trump University. He responded to the judge's order to have internal Trump Unive... The documents outline how employees should guide customers through "the roller coaster of emotions" once they have expressed interest. "The motivation that they experienced can die quickly as the realities of their daily lives take over. It is our job to rekindle that motivation... to make them once again see the potential of achieving their dream," according to a Trump University "sales playbook. " Trump University's core customers are identified in the documents as male heads of households between 40 and 54 years old with annual household incomes of at least $90,000, a college education and a net worth of more than $200,000. If potential students expressed concern about the cost, or about needing to go into debt in order to afford the classes, staffers were prompted to reassure them by telling them not to "make excuses. " "[D]o you like living paycheck to paycheck?... Do you enjoy seeing everyone else but yourself in their dream houses and driving their dreams cars with huge checking accounts? " the scripted response reads. "Those people saw an opportunity, and didn't make excuses, like what you're doing now. " Another section urged staffers not to appear "impressed" by a potential student. "When attendees see that we (the experts) are impressed by their accomplishments, they may easily leave thinking that they don't need our help," the guide says. The documents show meticulous attention to details such as seating at seminars. Room temperature should be set no higher than 68 degrees and music should be the O'Jays "For the Love of Money. " Trump has maintained that customers were overwhelmingly satisfied with the offerings. His attorneys didn't immediately respond a request for comment Tuesday. The 6-year-old case in San Diego is scheduled to go to trial shortly after the November presidential election.

Meet America's new most unloved industry Consumers have a new whipping boy, an industry that garners even less satisfaction than cable-TV and other subscription-TV businesses. Internet service providers are now the most unloved corporations among American consumers. They gave the industry the lowest rating among the more than 40 sectors tracked by the American Customer Satisfaction Index, which surveyed more than 12,000 customers in the first quarter. ISPs earned a bottom-of-the-barrel score of 64 points, giving them a lower rating than cable-TV and other subscription- TV services (65) and municipal utilities (68). Cable-TV and other subscription-TV businesses aren't doing much better than ISPs, and in many cases the same companies provide both services to households. Given that more Americans are cutting the cord and relying on ISPs to provide high-speed connections to stream Netflix ( NFLX ) and Amazon ( AMZN ), issues with speed and unreliability are taking their toll on consumers' perceptions. On top of that, data caps -- when ISPs rely on "usage-based pricing," or tacking on extra fees for those who stream a lot of data -- are adding up to disgruntled consumers. "Data caps are one issue," ACSI Director David VanAmburg said. "Expectations are another. We become spoiled, especially those of us who work at companies with high-speed Internet. We expect the same at home, but in most cases it's not the same. That tends to create a significant amount of dissatisfaction. Add in how much it costs, and that also drags down satisfaction. " However, consumers don't view all ISPs equally. The top-rated service is Verizon's ( VZ ) FiOS, which earned an ACSI score of 73. The worst-rated ISP was Frontier Communications ( FTR ), which received a score of 56. Cable- and subscription-TV services were only one point ahead of ISPs in customer satisfaction, however. Last year, ISPs and subscription-TV services were tied at the bottom of the ACSI rankings. Subscription-TV services improved slightly from last year, earning a score of 65 points in the 2016 survey, a two-point gain from 2015. But as with ISPs, consumers have a wide difference in perception when it comes to which TV services are performing well. Verizon FiOS again ranked at the top, with a score of 70, while Mediacom came in at the bottom, at 54. Given the merger of Charter ( CHTR ), Time Warner Cable and Bright House, which was completed in May, it's possible that those companies may sink lower in consumers' estimation. Combining customer accounts and operations can be tricky in any industry, and the ACSI has found that mergers tend to lead to lower customer satisfaction. "It's particularly problematic in industries where the customer relationship with a company is an account-type relationship," VanAmburg said. "It's a big challenge to merge portfolios of customers and not have something fall through the cracks. " Charter will drop the Time Warner Cable name in favor of using Charter Communications in its branding. While that makes sense given that Charter is the acquiring company, the cable company may have had another incentive: losing a corporate brand disliked by many consumers. Time Warner Cable ranked as the ACSI's lowest-rated company in 2015. Still, it's performing slightly better in 2016, climbing to 59 from 51 a year earlier, a 16 percent improvement. "It probably makes sense from the standpoint of a company that has a rather lackluster reputation now for many years," VanAmburg said. He added, referring to Comast's ( CMCSA ) 15 percent jump to 62, "Both Comcast and Time Warner really lifted themselves up. They went from very low to merely low. "

Le Clos could close the distance Le Clos, who won the 200m butterfly gold and 100m fly silver at the 2012 Games, is scheduled to start competing in Monte Carlo on Saturday in the first Mare Nostrum gala of the European summer. "I feel like I'm stronger than I was [in London]," Le Clos said before leaving the country for a training camp in Doha. "I had a hiccup a few weeks ago, my shoulder just popped out again, but nothing too serious. I feel like I'm different, I feel like eventually I'll lean towards the 100m more than the 200m and 400m. " Four years ago, Le Clos stunned US legend Michael Phelps to win the 200m fly, and ruled the planet until last year, when he was beaten by veteran Laszlo Cseh at the world championships. Cseh has gone even faster this year, posting 1min 52.91sec, the fastest time since 2009. Le Clos admitted his endurance was not where it should be, but was confident it would improve. "I feel like I'm nearly there. I'm missing just 20m, 25m, which will come. I'm not worried at all. " Le Clos, 24, has not been faster in the 200m fly than the 1:52.96 he achieved in London, but he has speeded up in the 100m race, as well as the 100m and 200m freestyle. He didn't want to predict the colour of medals in Rio. "Four years ago Phelps thought he was going to win it, he got beaten. It would be stupid for me to say I'm going to win three gold medals, you know. "

Maine Sunday Telegram Sports There was a great chance for most of the country to gain this greater context on May 9. You didn’t even need to stay up late, but you did need a telescope and solar filter to see this fairly rare event. I watched for about five hours, even though clouds hid the sun for over half that time. The two best moments, first contact and last contact, were also clouded out, but it was still a joy to watch. I also looked at the sun through two telescopes with built-in hydrogen alpha filters, which allowed us to see any prominences over the limb of the sun and any dark filaments and hotter and whiter regions called plage on its surface. Only a small percentage of people have been fortunate enough to even glimpse the sun, much less study it through one of these hydrogen alpha filters. I had plenty of time that Monday to do just that. It gives you a much greater sense of how we really are in direct contact with the sun through the dynamic solar wind that always rushes over and around us at nearly one million miles per hour. It was all unfolding right there in front of us, only eight minutes away at the speed of light, but it was changing imperceptibly slowly unless you recorded it and played it back faster. Mercury was flying right along at 30 miles per second, traveling its full width of 3,000 miles every minute and 40 seconds. And still we couldn’t notice anything; it was almost as if we were all frozen in time, knowing something spectacular and rare was happening very close to us in space, but we could simply not grasp the full impact of this amazing phenomenon. Mercury’s sharp and dark, perfectly black little circle, about 150 times smaller than the sun’s huge and luminous disk, contrasted nicely with a large group of much less sharp sunspots a little above our first planet. The sunspots had a grayer area around them called the penumbra and a darker and cooler region in their center called the umbra. Staring at the sun for that long also gave me a much better sense of its great power, as it really does very provide for all life on earth. Every second, our very average sun is turning 700 million tons of hydrogen into helium, releasing four million tons of energy. We only receive one billionth of all that energy, or about one kilowatt per square meter of our surface, but that is sufficient if we can capture and store it. Carefully watching Mercury’s motion across the face of the sun for all that time also made me think about what gravity really is, the force that keeps not only Mercury but also the earth and all the thousands and probably billions of other planets in our galaxy in perfect orbits. As Einstein proved, gravity is simply the curvature of space-time. As John Wheeler stated, mass tells space how to curve and space tells mass how to move. A perfect example of that is the precession of the orbit of Mercury. That was a mystery for over 200 years as the best minds could not figure it out, thinking it had to be some kind of object affecting its orbit that they could never find. That’s because it didn’t exist. The huge mass of our sun warps the actual space through which Mercury is always moving, which explains the precession of its elliptical orbit. So we were seeing the effect of the very space-time curvature of the universe playing out right in front of all of us! Three bright planets now dominate our evening sky. Mars was at its best in late May and is still much brighter and larger and redder than usual. Look for some surface features and the polar icecaps through a telescope. You could even spot one or both of the Martian moons now. We are already leaving Mars farther behind in our faster orbit around the sun. Look for the softly glowing golden orb of Saturn as it emerges right at sunset, reaching opposition on June 3 and remaining in the sky all night. If the shadow cone of the earth were long enough, it would hit Saturn that day. But our shadow is only about a million miles long and Saturn is nearly one billion miles away, which is a thousand times farther than our shadow reaches. Both Mars and Saturn can be seen fairly close to each other, with Mars in Libra and Saturn in Scorpius near Antares, an orange supergiant fully 700 times larger than our sun. Watch the nearly full moon pass near Mars and then Saturn on June 17 and 18. Notice that Mars is now six times brighter than Saturn, which is very unusual. Jupiter is moving in its direct, eastward motion again in the eastern part of Leo the Lion. Mercury reappears in our eastern morning sky 30 minutes before sunrise. It will only get seven degrees high, so you may need binoculars to see it. Look for the very thin waning crescent moon right next to Mercury on June 3, the same day Saturn reaches opposition. 64 Bafana coach Mashaba expect Gambia to come out guns blazing The South Africans meet Gambia at the Independence Stadium in Bakau in a Group M encounter. Bafana, on just three points, desperately need the win to keep their slim Gabon 2017 hopes alive. Gambia is in an even worse position than South Africa on only two points and are likely to play far less defensively than the side that put Mashaba's team under pressure, holding Bafana to a 0-0 draw in their opening match in Durban a year ago. "Gambia have got to come out playing now," Mashaba said after his squad's training session at the University of Johannesburg's Soweto campus on Tuesday. "They are going to open up - they must. "And that's where we want them. "When we played them here they had clearly come for a draw. Nothing else. They never attacked. "They had nine players in their own half the whole time. " Following three draws and a defeat from four matches, Bafana can finish with a maximum of nine points should they beat Gambia and then Mauritania at home in September. They also have to rely on Cameroon losing both their last two games to qualify for Gabon.

65 Liberman: Israel doesn't have luxury of ‘wars of choice’ Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman struck a pragmatic and restrained tone during his first speech in his new role on Monday. In an address to the IDF General Staff, Liberman said, “We do not have the luxury of managing wars of choice. As the society in Israel, we are only authorized to manage wars of no choice, and we must win them.” Liberman said the role of the IDF in Israeli society “is much more significant than that of militaries in other countries,” due it being a people’s army. He said he saw the IDF’s first role as safeguarding national cohesion. In democratic society, issues of war and peace must express the will of “the big majority of the nation, and not rely on a single coincidental [majority] seat in the Knesset,” the defense minister said. Liberman added that whenever the values of greater Israel or a cohesive nation collide, the interests of nation takes priority over attachment to land. He said that he intended to “work here twenty four-seven,” adding that “I believe in diplomatic pragmatism and a powerful defense policy.” Liberman thanked his predecessor, Moshe Ya’alon, with whom “I have had many differences,” adding that he recognizes his “many accomplishments and big contribution to Israeli security. I intend to work in full cooperation with the chief of staff, Gadi Eisenkot, and the General Staff,” Liberman said. Earlier, Liberman held a telephone conversation with Ya’alon, soon after taking up his new position. Liberman was greeted by an IDF honor guard at noon, before holding his first working meeting with IDF chief Lt.-Gen. Gadi Eisenkot.

The not so beautiful game The issue has been brought into sharp focus in this 50th anniversary year of England's 1966 World Cup triumph, with four of the eight surviving outfield players of England's greatest team now confirmed to be suffering with significant memory problems. Ray Wilson, Martin Peters and Nobby Stiles were diagnosed with Alzheimer's in their 60s while Jack Charlton has been struggling with memory loss since his late 70s. Experts say the incidence rate among the 1966 heroes is "frightening" but they had already become alarmed by the anecdotal evidence of the devastating stories of hundreds of other former footballers. "It can't be a coincidence - it seems almost to be of epidemic proportion," said John Stiles, the son of Nobby and himself a former professional. It is 14 years since an inquest ruled that former England striker Jeff Astle died of an industrial disease caused by the damage to his brain from playing football but a promised joint Football Association and Professional Footballers' Association study into the wider risks was never published. However, the FA, PFA and the Professional Game Board have launched a new collaboration to examine what research should be done, potentially in conjunction with other sports. A close family member of one of English football's greatest players claimed the publicised cases of dementia were the "tip of an iceberg" and that others, including some household names, were living privately with a degenerative condition. Many others, the source said, are terrified of developing a disease. The suspicion is that players have suffered due to a combination of repeated heading of the ball and, as in American football, from collisions that might have occurred during a game. Since the inquest in 2002, Astle's family have been contacted by hundreds of other families with similar experiences. They have tried to work with the authorities to find answers but have become exasperated and suspicious at football's lack of action. "They have tried to sweep Dad's death and the verdict from an inquest under a carpet because of fear, I think, for the implications of the product of football," Astle's daughter, Dawn Astle, said. "I think they are terrified of what this research is going to show. It's not a theory we concocted. It was a coroner. For a coroner to say Dad's job killed him and, 14 years on, to be no further forward is shocking. It was a landmark decision that would have had earthquake repercussions in any other industry. It feels like a huge conspiracy. It's a disgrace. No one in football wants to find out if football is a killer. " The neuropathologist who examined Astle's brain and found chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) - a condition that can cause similar symptoms to dementia, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's or motor neuron disease - is Dr Willie Stewart, of the University of Glasgow. He drew a parallel with the scandal in American football that inspired the Hollywood film Concussion. "It shouldn't take 14 years to answer the question: Does participation in football alter your risk of dementia? " he said. "That could be answered in a year or two. Football has to step up and use a fraction of the vast sums of money they have to answer the question. "We have teams in the 1950s and 1960s where five or six of the players have developed dementia," said Stewart. "One player perhaps would be in the odds but when you see that in team after team you really have to start wondering. "In American football, not embracing it, pursuing it and getting the data meant people have withdrawn from the game. The grass-roots participation collapsed. There is also a duty of care to current and former players. If they are given due notice that there may be a problem and do nothing about it, they could end up facing similar action to American football where they have been sued for $1-billion. " Dr Michael Grey is a motor neuroscience physiologist at the University of Birmingham. "I liken this to the old smoking debate," he said. "The tobacco companies were saying there is no link between cigarette smoking and lung cancer. In the 1950s and 1960s there was no conclusive link but of course we now know there is. That is the stage we are at. "We don't have the conclusive evidence so it is easy to say these players would have got it anyway. But I think when you start to look at the proportion, and the 1966 team, it is frightening. That's just not an incidence rate that one would expect in the normal population. I am shocked at Fifa, the FA and the PFA. I just do not understand why they have not invested in independent research. " Dawn Astle met representatives of the FA in 2014 and was told that they would forward research questions to Fifa. She was then enraged last month when she read Dr Ian Beasley, the FA's outgoing head of medical services, saying that it would "imminently" put questions to Fifa. She sent an immediate e-mail to FA chairman Greg Dyke and PFA deputy chief executive John Bramhall and said that the "lack of respect for those who have died and their families who have seen them stripped of all dignity is beyond belief". Dyke and the PFA chief executive, Gordon Taylor, have since replied to Astle and a meeting has been arranged with Charlotte Cowie, the FA's new head of performance medicine. Taylor said the PFA had been approached by "quite a number" of former professionals, including "some relatively young ex-players", with symptoms of cognitive decline. "I share the frustration, this does need addressing," said Taylor. "There is a momentum gathering but it is not happening quickly enough. I will be disappointed if, by the end of year, the research has not started. " Dawn Astle described her family as "aghast" at the idea that Fifa, an organisation that has been so tarnished, would be best placed to carry out research. "It's like having cigarette companies looking into the dangers of cigarettes," she said. "One study of NFL players found they are 19 times more likely to have some degenerative brain disease. It wouldn't surprise me if the statistics for football are higher. "

editorial: For Babri, peace should get our vote A meeting between the Hindu and Muslim leaders met in Ayodhya for a negotiated settlement of the Babri Masjid- Ram Janmabhoomi dispute was an uplifting piece of news, amidst the despair and simmering dispute that embroils the issue till today. During the meeting, both sides said a peaceful way to resolve the issue must be found. Reports state that Mahant Narendra Giri, president, All India Akhara Parishad, met Hashim Ansari, oldest surviving litigant in the Babri Masjid case. Giri, along with other mahants and sadhus, had a half-hour meeting with Ansari. It was heartening to read statements like both sides wanting to reach a negotiated settlement in the dispute. Moreover, these leaders claimed the settlement should be peaceful and acceptable to both communities. However, they claim that while talks are on, the Supreme Court should conduct a daily hearing in this case. Ansari has also stated that they were always ready for talks and there has to be a peaceful solution. It is the Babri issue that really cleaved India and singed Mumbai in an unbelievable way. People will remember the character of Mumbai changing in its immediate aftermath and Mumbai was not the same in the violence that followed. It is good to push for a negotiated settlement in a way because it is only talk that will break down the huge trust deficit between the two sides. Even if nothing concrete comes of these talks, it is important that they continue, once the initiative has been taken. Like all disputes — though Babri of course, is mammoth in scale and ramification — talks are the only way forward, when it comes to any deadlock. We should not let talks be derailed by bombastic statements from politicians who are seeking to rabble rouse and keep the communal cauldron simmering. As the case goes the legal way, talks are a curtain to how the ordinary man or woman thinks outside the legal arena. If peace is what both sides want, then, it is talks that should get our vote.

Results: Texans head to the polls for runoff elections While much of the country's focus has shifted to the expected November contest between Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton, for many Texas offices the parties still need to select a nominee. Polls opened Tuesday morning for a small array of Harris County runoffs, including races to nominate a Democratic sheriff candidate and tap a Republican county party chairman. Aside from judicial contests, the ballot also features two races for state representative, two for constable and one for U. S. representative. Beyond Harris County, candidates for state Railroad Commissioner are slated for a runoff on both sides of the aisle, as are the Democrats competing for State Board of Education, District 6. Take a look at the Houston-are results in the database below. The projected low-turnout affair drew just 49,300 early and mail voters in Harris County - 21,300 Democrats and 28,000 Republicans - down from 217,000 ahead of Super Tuesday.

Dear World, Please don't judge SA by Maite's ramblings She completely shattered our image of her and failed in her duty to represent our country fairly to an international audience. Our disappointment was caused not only by her failure to answer key questions but also by her evident lack of preparation for the interview. It showed the world that South Africa is at the same level today as in 1994, when we first strode onto the international stage as a democracy. At a time when we need hope, and an answer to our prayers that we survive a credit-rating downgrade, Nkoana-Mashabane has added to the pain of our already battered souls. She failed to tell the world that, although we are facing economic and political challenges, South Africa is getting stronger and its people are resilient. Instead, she rambled on about things that had nothing to do with the questions posed by the interviewer. Nkoana-Mashabane's performance should force South Africans to ask themselves difficult questions about the men and women in the cabinet. When a foreign affairs minister - whose job is to promote and protect our image abroad - behaves in such a way we should all be worried. What kind of a message does she project behind closed doors, away from the cameras? Those who argue that we are being too harsh on the minister should watch the interview and judge for themselves. Nkoana-Mashabane must realise that she represents our country and that her statements are viewed by the international community as a reflection of who we are as a nation. W e deserve better representation.

PSL Football of the Season Khama Billiat coy in his future The little Zimbabwean, who cleaned up with the midfielder, player's player and footballer of the season prizes at the awards ceremony on Monday, has naturally been linked to clubs in Europe. He gives the impression of being a player in two minds whether to continue at a club where, at 25, he has finally shown consistency after many promising seasons never quite materialised, or strike it big in Europe while the iron is hot. "I haven't looked at it in that way. I'm going to go home, and I think I need a week," Billiat said. "I need to talk to the coach and to the club, do things in a proper way and see. I'm still a Mamelodi Sundowns player. " Pressed on where he wants to be next season, Billiat replied: "I want to play football. " Asked where, he said: "Anywhere where football is played. " Asked about interest shown from French clubs, where Lille and AS Monaco have been reported to be tracking the forward, he said: "That would be good for me. But I'll see. " Sundowns have reportedly exercised their option to extend Billiat's contract to the end of the 2016-17 season, so clubs interested in the player will have to cough up a sizeable transfer fee. If he genuinely is reluctant to leave Chloorkop, a big part of the reason might be the relationship Billiat has established with Downs coach Pitso Mosimane. "He (Mosimane) made me a better player mentally, he made me stronger and more mature. " Billiat scored 13 goals in all competitions (12 in the league) and provided a staggering 20 assists for the winners of and Absa Premiership.

Pioneer John Biggers nurtured a generation of Houston artists When John Biggers came to Houston to start an art program at the Texas State College for Negroes in 1949, he could take his students to the city's museum only on Thursdays. Jim Crow policies were still in effect, and that was the one day of the week African-Americans were allowed to visit. That didn't deter the young professor, who also was black, from entering the museum's annual purchase prize competition in 1950 with a stark conté crayon drawing, "Cradle," that depicted an emaciated mother holding her infant. He won. Then came the mortifying night of a reception in his honor: Biggers wasn't allowed to attend. The museum changed its policy the next day. So begins one of the most fascinating chapters in Houston art history. During 34 years as a legendary teacher, Biggers nurtured several generations of artists while also building a significant body of his own works that made him a pioneer in the broader world of American art. Biggers told stories that had not been told in art before - symbolic narratives about strong Nubian queens and the sacred geometry of the universe and how everything circled back to Mother Africa: Science. History. The culture of modern man. He brought to art what spirituals give to music, expressing the triumph of the human spirit over the mundane and material. "He wanted us to know who we were and deal not with art but with the visual poetry of ourselves, the who-what-where of our existence," said Harvey Johnson , one of Biggers' first proteges. Biggers grew up in Gastonia, N. C., the youngest of seven children in a tight-knit family that valued education and culture. His father, Paul Biggers, was a Baptist preacher, schoolteacher and farmer. John was 13 when his father died. His mother, Cora, worked as a matron at an orphanage so that John and his brother Joe could attend Lincoln Academy , where the budding artist first began to appreciate African-American culture as something larger than the history of slavery. At Virginia's diverse Hampton Institute , Biggers found a mentor in art professor Viktor Lowenfeld , a Jewish refugee from Austria who exposed his students to African art as well as the Harlem Renaissance masters, American regionalists and Mexican muralists. "I began to see art not primarily as an individual expression of talent, but as a responsibility to reflect the spirit and style of the Negro people," Biggers said in the 1978 book "Black Art in Houston. " After two years in the segregated U. S. Navy during World War II, Biggers followed Lowenfeld to the University of Pennsylvania. He earned his first two degrees there in 1948, also marrying the woman who would be his lifelong soulmate, Hazel Hales. Susan Clayton McAshan , a patron of the school that became Texas Southern University , urged its president to recruit Biggers. Happy to live closer to Mexico and the great murals of one of his idols, Diego Rivera, Biggers painted his first important Houston mural, "The Contribution of the Negro Woman in American Life and Education," as his doctoral dissertation at what is now the Blue Triangle Community Center. He aimed to express African-American themes the way Rivera celebrated Mexican history and culture. Biggers and sculptor Carroll Simms , who arrived in 1950, didn't let meager funding slow their programs. They brought a carload of free clay from San Antonio to start the sculpture studio and built a print studio with stones retrieved from a Louisiana garden. Biggers required his students to create murals in the school's hallways - a large, free canvas that also made art more visible. Alvia Wardlaw, a former Museum of Fine Arts , Houston curator who now directs TSU's University Museum, didn't attend the school but virtually grew up there: Her father, Alvin Holmes Wardlaw , chaired TSU's math department. She remembers the campus's flourishing cultural scene, including dance and theater performances that weren't yet accessible to black residents in Houston's theaters and museums. Biggers' perspective changed profoundly after his first trip to Africa in 1957, on a UNESCO grant that enabled him and Hales to experience cultures in Ghana, and other West African countries. He documented their six- month journey in "Ananse: The Web of Life in Africa," a book of 89 drawings. This was 20 years before Alex Haley 's best-selling novel "Roots" shook the world. "He just really was ahead of his time," Wardlaw said. "No one was talking about Africa as a place for knowledge, a place that had secrets about the universe. " Biggers' painting style grew increasingly abstract over the years as he expressed the geometric symbolism of quilt patterns and the pure forms of row houses descended from African culture. That work influenced star students who are now veterans of Houston's art scene - among them Kermit Oliver , Tierney Malone , Earlie Hudnall Jr. and Robert Pruitt. It helped inspire Project Row Houses and MacArthur "genius" Rick Lowe. And it still resonates with younger artists who never knew Biggers. The beloved teacher retired from TSU in 1983 but continued to paint and draw in spite of struggles with diabetes (and four years of kidney dialysis), staying busy almost until he died in 2001, at age 76. He left hundreds of highly collectible drawings, prints and paintings as well as a few sculptures. His work also lives on in illustrations for famous editions of books, including Pearl S. Buck 's novel "The Good Earth" and Maya Angelou 's poem "Our Grandmothers. " But Biggers' most enduring legacy can be found in the epic murals he created around his adopted hometown for numerous public spaces and parks. Weaving connections between local histories and universal themes, they are timeless expressions of mankind's essential strength and goodness, opening doors to understanding for all.

80 Microsoft wants Windows to open into mixed reality Microsoft is out to use Windows software to do for altered reality what it did for personal computers: make them commonplace. The US technology giant on Wednesday announced that Windows software already powering a wide range of devices including HoloLens augmented reality headgear is being opened to partners interested in building devices for "mixed reality" experiences. Devices built on the Windows platform will be interoperable, meaning that someone wearing HTC Vive virtual reality gear would be able to virtually visit and collaborate with someone using HoloLens virtual reality goggles, Microsoft executives told AFP. The list of partners already working with Microsoft included HTC, Lenovo, Asus, and HP. Microsoft said it built HoloLens to showcase the potential for the technology, which is based on the same Windows operating system that powers computers, smartphones, Xbox consoles and more. Sharing the Windows platform will mean that augmented or virtual reality gear from various manufacturers will be able to work with one another, the same way Windows computers do. "We are bringing the software that lights up HoloLens to the entire ecosystem of mixed reality devices –- and inviting partners to join us in this platform," Microsoft spokesman Greg Sullivan told AFP. - Walk on Mars - While virtual reality devices such as those from Facebook-owned Oculus and Sony's PlayStation unit immerse users in fantasy worlds, HoloLens "augments" reality by overlaying holograms on the real world in view. HoloLens lets users interact with virtual objects using hand gestures. Microsoft would not disclose details regarding how it will make money from the move. But it is expected to pursue the kinds of licensing deals it negotiates with companies that make Windows-powered computers. Creating a common platform for a wide range of companies to create and market mixed reality gear promises to bring down prices for altered reality gear while enriching variety in the marketplace. Microsoft in March began its first shipments of its HoloLens to application developers, staking its place in what is expected to be an emerging computing platform. At a recent Microsoft Build developers' conference, the company showed some of the possibilities for HoloLens -- such as giving users a view of Mars that up to now could only be seen by space vehicles, and an inside view of the brain by medical specialists aiming to deal with a cerebral tumor. Aiming to encourage new applications for the device, Microsoft noted that developers can create "new mixed reality" with holograms to enable users to see and experience things in new ways. The holographic capabilities in the Microsoft gear can open doors for developers to augment tasks from complex surgery to motorcycle design, according to the company. Marketers predict virtual headsets will soon top wish lists for kids and young adults from Silicon Valley to Hong Kong. But some analysts say virtual reality will be eclipsed by augmented reality within a few years.

Begging for the beggars Thirty-five-year-old Pamela Green made headlines last year when she helped a beggar in Sandton, Joseph Phukubje, get a job. Eleven months later Green's non-profit organisation, Second Chances, has helped almost 200 people - but she is R250000 in debt. Now Green is the one standing at the busy Grayston Drive intersection in Johannesburg, begging people to help her help others. She left her job at a telecommunications organisation and cashed in all her policies to chase a dream no one seems to believe in. "I've never thought I was average, I always knew I had a higher purpose. There's no rationale to explain it. I have this passion and a need to give back to the country. " Because Second Chances was just a start-up, Green said, it was not bringing in enough money to be sustainable. She said she needed about R80000 a month to continue helping those who were unemployed and addicted to drugs. Through Second Chances she runs a feeding scheme that has to date fed about 3000 children. She also runs a second-hand clothing initiative, called Twice as New, which provides 15 unemployed women with job opportunities. A big part of what she does is the drug recovery programme, as she has found that in order for unemployed people to get a job they first needed to conquer their drug habits. Despite the challenges and people urging her to give up and get a job, Green remains determined. She added: "I plan to do this for the next 50 years. I often get despondent. This morning standing in the road, I got despondent. Yes, sure, going out with friends and eating out regularly is a much easier lifestyle, but every time I want to give up, I just can't. "I got so tired of people complaining [about South Africa]. "If I can be part of the solution it's a far greater achievement than I could ever hope for," she said.

Socialism for the Uninformed | The American Spectator Socialism sounds great. It has always sounded great. And it will probably always continue to sound great. It is only when you go beyond rhetoric, and start looking at hard facts, that socialism turns out to be a big disappointment, if not a disaster. While throngs of young people are cheering loudly for avowed socialist Bernie Sanders, socialism has turned oil-rich Venezuela into a place where there are shortages of everything from toilet paper to beer, where electricity keeps shutting down, and where there are long lines of people hoping to get food, people complaining that they cannot feed their families. With national income going down, and prices going up under triple-digit inflation in Venezuela, these complaints are by no means frivolous. But it is doubtful if the young people cheering for Bernie Sanders have even heard of such things, whether in Venezuela or in other countries around the world that have turned their economies over to politicians and bureaucrats to run. The anti-capitalist policies in Venezuela have worked so well that the number of companies in Venezuela is now a fraction of what it once was. That should certainly reduce capitalist “exploitation,” shouldn’t it? But people who attribute income inequality to capitalists exploiting workers, as Karl Marx claimed, never seem to get around to testing that belief against facts — such as the fact that none of the Marxist regimes around the world has ever had as high a standard of living for working people as there is in many capitalist countries. Facts are seldom allowed to contaminate the beautiful vision of the left. What matters to the true believers are the ringing slogans, endlessly repeated. When Senator Sanders cries, “The system is rigged!” no one asks, “Just what specifically does that mean?” or “What facts do you have to back that up?” In 2015, the 400 richest people in the world had net losses of $19 billion. If they had rigged the system, surely they could have rigged it better than that. But the very idea of subjecting their pet notions to the test of hard facts will probably not even occur to those who are cheering for socialism and for other bright ideas of the political left. How many of the people who are demanding an increase in the minimum wage have ever bothered to check what actually happens when higher minimum wages are imposed? More often they just assume what is assumed by like-minded peers — sometimes known as “everybody,” with their assumptions being what “everybody knows.” Back in 1948, when inflation had rendered meaningless the minimum wage established a decade earlier, the unemployment rate among 16-17-year-old black males was under 10 percent. But after the minimum wage was raised repeatedly to keep up with inflation, the unemployment rate for black males that age was never under 30 percent for more than 20 consecutive years, from 1971 through 1994. In many of those years, the unemployment rate for black youngsters that age exceeded 40 percent and, for a couple of years, it exceeded 50 percent. The damage is even greater than these statistics might suggest. Most low- wage jobs are entry-level jobs that young people move up out of, after acquiring work experience and a track record that makes them eligible for better jobs. But you can’t move up the ladder if you don’t get on the ladder. The great promise of socialism is something for nothing. It is one of the signs of today’s dumbed-down education that so many college students seem to think that the cost of their education should — and will — be paid by raising taxes on “the rich.” Here again, just a little check of the facts would reveal that higher tax rates on upper-income earners do not automatically translate into more tax revenue coming in to the government. Often high tax rates have led to less revenue than lower tax rates. In a globalized economy, high tax rates may just lead investors to invest in other countries with lower tax rates. That means that jobs created by those investments will be overseas. None of this is rocket science. But you do have to stop and think — and that is what too many of our schools and colleges are failing to teach their students to do.

Cindy Crawford goes casual cool as she and hubby attend charity event They are parents to two teenage children, so naturally they care about the future. 84 Propercorn's brand manager departs to co- found new agency dedicated to start-up marketing Faraz Aghaei, Propercorn's brand and marketing manager (pictured right), has left the company to launch a new agency devoted to helping start-ups market their businesses. New outfit The Clerkenwell Brothers also comprises two real-life brothers: Cass (centre) and Nick Horowitz (left), who respectively come from the worlds of journalism and film. The three will work together to offer clients both a creative shop and production studio, unsurprisingly, out of their Clerkenwell office. The start-up focus of the agency came about from Aghaei's two-year experience at Propercorn, which grew from a start-up into a fully-fledged brand during his time there. "There wasn't an agency that suited the needs of a start up," he told The Drum. "You have your PR agencies, your video production agencies and then your marketing agencies all pitching for work under different campaigns. What they don’t realise is that cash flow is usually the biggest concern for these brands. " C Horowitz added: "Why would a start up pay a £2,000 retainer per month to a PR agency that occasionally gets them into an article, looks after their community management and press releases? And then more on top for content creation? It’s just not very realistic. " For that reason, The Clerkenwell Brothers' financial model does not include retainers and instead works on a percentage revenue share basis run project-by-project. N Horowitz explained: "We put our money where our mouth is; we charge a small upfront fee because we know how hard it is for start-ups who have cashflow issues. " So far the trio has worked with clients such as the Wireless Power Consortium (creating a online ad starring a monkey), and has just signed with alcoholic sweet brand Smith and Sinclair and the Echo Online. The agency has been operating full time for two months; C Horowitz said the industry's reception has been "great" so far. "More than 600,000 start ups launched in the UK last year, so there is a plethora of potential clients," N Horowitz added. "We’re quite picky with who we work with as we get quite emotionally invested in the brands and want to see them flourish. "

ANC's Gupta probe dead in the water ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe yesterday revealed that only one of the eight ANC members who complained to him about the Guptas' political influence was willing to make a written submission. As a consequence, Mantashe said, the ANC viewed the entire exercise as "fruitless". After meeting at the weekend, the party's national executive committee advised would-be complainants to refer their grievances to "institutions that deal with complaints of this nature". These include Chapter9 institutions such as the public protector. The committee said: "Following the call by the ANC for comrades to provide any information about alleged business influence on the state, a number of comrades came forward to engage with the office of the secretary-general. "It was unfortunate that only one person could make a written submission on the matter. "The allegations were serious; they cannot be treated lightly and many warrant a comprehensive investigation. " The allegations against the Guptas came to a head in March when former ANC MP Vytjie Mentor claimed in a Facebook post that the family offered her the position of public enterprises minister - if she signed off on deals that would benefit an airline in which the Guptas had an interest. She said they asked her "if I would drop the SAA flight-route to India and give it to them". Similar allegations were made by Themba Maseko, the former CEO of the Government Communication and Information System. He alleged that, in 2010, the Guptas pressured him into directing government advertising to The New Age newspaper, which they own. But Mentor and Maseko's claims were not as sensational as those of Deputy Minister of Finance Mcebisi Jonas, who said the Guptas had offered to make him finance minister if he toed their line. He said: "Members of the Gupta family offered me the position of minister of finance to replace [Nhlanhla] Nene. I rejected this out of hand. The basis of my rejection of their offer is that it makes a mockery of our hard-earned democracy and the trust of our people. " Speaking after the weekend NEC meeting, Mantashe said: "Overwhelmingly, the branches of the ANC confirmed the decision not to recall the president. "

As Jamie Oliver backs McDonald's Olympic sponsorship reform, ISBA slams diet campaigners' 'need for headlines' The Incorporated Society of British Advertisers (ISBA) has spoken out against Jamie Oliver's suggestion that companies such as Coca-Cola and McDonald's should be banned from sponsoring the Olympics unless they meet particular health standards. During an interview with the Daily Telegraph last week, Oliver revealed he was looking to raise £100m to create a kite mark which could be used by any food firm to show they had achieved a certain level of nutritional and ethical excellence. Speaking a few months ahead of Rio 2016, he said he wants to see the motion in place by the time Tokyo 2020 rolls around. However, the advertising body has dubbed the chef's outlook on the matter as "simplisctic. " "The big problem with diet campaigners is their need for headlines," Ian Twin, ISBA’s director of public affairs told The Drum. "The other problem is demonising some foods they disapprove of as 'junk'. It’s far too simplistic and we know is full of exceptions to make it work. The missed opportunity to tackle obesity by tackling over eating and a lack of a balanced diet is too sad to contemplate. " Oliver said he had already presented the scheme to some "wealthy billionaires," continuing: "Forgive me if I am being romantic – but in our lifetime at the Olympics, which is the biggest theatre of all time, I want to see something with goodness at its heart on its billboards.” Pointing to the London Olympics in 2012, Oliver said he was "depressed" that, due to sponsorship deals, the only food and drink available inside Olympic Park was produced by McDonald's, Coca-Cola or Cadbury, adding that nobody could be "proud" of the event from that perspective. While Oliver did concede that he wasn't looking for an outright ban on McDonald's or Coca-Cola at the Olympics, he said that his kite mark scheme could be taken as an opportunity for food and drink companies to improve their own standards, as well as children's nutrition. Taking stock of The Food Revolution host's remarks, ISBA's Twin noted: "Of course Jamie has a point about both obesity and about the lack of food choice at events. "Perhaps he is right to question the exclusivity rules that surround the Olympics…but he will need to come up with an answer about the cost of the Olympics and how to attract very big payers. The answers may not attract very much support. " Oliver has been one of the most high-profile campaigners to back the government's so-called sugar tax , which is currently undergoing consultation and will place a levy on brands selling high sugar products, like Coca-Cola. The proposed scheme will fine drinks giants on the volume of sugar- sweetened products they make or import at the rate of 18p and 24p a litre. While some big name brands are set to sue the government over the change, there has been much debate in the industry about how advertisers should use the public debate around the issue to harness the impact their marketing has on consumer attitudes.

No more 'Mr Nice' axe gang The gang has been linked to 10 home invasions in the city's Blairgowrie suburb since February. Ninety percent of their victims have been pensioners. Until recently, some of the gang's victims described their robbers as "gentle" - although other victims were simply too traumatised to speak to the media. Sources say the robbers sneak into properties at night and wait until their victims fall asleep. In the early hours of the morning, they make noises to lure the victims outside. Said a source: "Once outside, the householders are threatened with an axe and tied up. "The robberies usually last three hours, with the gang taking highly valuable but small items such as jewellery and cash. "They are said to explain to their victims why they're robbing them. Sometimes they offer advice on how to improve home security. " The source said: "These are the strangest criminals we have ever dealt with. Sitting with and chatting to victims, asking victims for keys to let themselves out and then closing the gate, locking it and putting the keys back inside. " Lara Bath, head of the Linden Community Policing Forum under which Blairgowrie falls, confirmed that the robbers had until now been relatively "gentle". But, she added: "One of their [recent] victims was badly injured when he tried to fight them off. " She said that, unlike other robbers, they remained in their victims' home for hours. "They offered several victims coffee and cigarettes to calm them. " She said in one of the robberies they gave their victim advice on electric security fences. "One of the victims was given back her laptop when she told them it had important documents on it. But this might have been because it was old," Bath said. She said the robbers carefully selected their victims. "They target pensioners, who are soft targets, don't have money for hi-tech security features and are easy to overpower. " She said they feared the attacks would become more violent. "One of the robbers has been arrested but they apparently have a new member, who appears to be aggressive. " Captain Alex Vermaak, of Linden police station, said the police hoped the recent arrest of the gang's suspected leader would end the attacks.

What does modern slavery look like? More than 45 million people are living in modern slavery, with Asia accounting for two thirds of the victims, a new report says. The 2016 Global Slavery Index, from the Walk Free Foundation in Australia, defines slavery as "situations of exploitation that a person cannot refuse or leave because of threats, violence, coercion, abuse of power or deception". Modern forms of slavery can include debt bondage, where a person is forced to work for free to pay off a debt, child slavery, forced marriage, domestic servitude and forced labour, where victims are made to work through violence and intimidation. The BBC looks at five examples of modern slavery. Human rights groups say thousands of people are trafficked and forced to work on boats, where they can be kept for years without ever seeing the shore. Victims say those who are caught trying to escape can be killed and thrown overboard. Thailand, which is the third largest exporter of in the world, has been accused of crewing fishing boats with Burmese and Cambodian men who have been sold and forced to work as slaves. The authorities are trying to crack down on people traffickers. Many victims say they were tricked by brokers who promised them factory jobs, and then put them on fishing boats where they were forced to work. One Burmese man who escaped his traffickers said he was forced on to a tiny boat in the open sea where he fished 20 hours a day, with no pay. "People said, anyone who tried to escape had their legs broken, their hands broken or were even killed," he told the BBC. Forced to fish: Slavery on Thailand's trawlers Figures suggest there could be between 10,000 and 13,000 victims of slavery in the UK, trafficked from countries including Albania, Nigeria, Vietnam and Romania. About 3,000 children from Vietnam alone are thought to be working in British cannabis farms and nail bars. Many victims are told their families will be hurt if they leave. One victim, Lam, was 16 years old when he came to the UK, hoping to earn money to send home to his family. Instead, he was forced to work in a cannabis factory. "I remember asking the man who took me there if I could leave because I didn't like it but he threatened to beat me or starve me to death," he said. Lam was arrested when police raided the house, and charged with drug offences - but was eventually helped by the NSPCC child trafficking advice centre. UK slavery: Victims 'need better support' The International Labour Organization estimates that there are 4.5 million victims of forced sexual exploitation. Shandra Woworuntu, an activist against human trafficking, was forced into sexual slavery in the US in 2001. She left Indonesia when she was promised work in the hospitality industry in the US, but the agents who met her at the airport passed her on to armed traffickers, who forced her to carry out sex work. "They told me I owed them $30,000 and I would pay off the debt $100 at a time by serving men," she said. She eventually managed to escape, and helped the FBI locate a brothel with other trafficking victims. Shandra Woworuntu: My life as a sex-trafficking victim The report highlights that many children across Europe, Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East are forced to beg on the streets by criminals. One victim told researchers: "Though I am begging I am not paid a single amount. I have to deposit all to them. I am deprived of food and good sleep. I am not paid my wages only working as a bonded labour. " Another said: "I can't say anything to you because I am in constant fear. I am threatened by my employer not to open my mouth to anybody otherwise I will be punished severely. " Much modern slavery isn't visible in public. It takes place in homes and private farms. Last week, three men from the same family in the UK were jailed for forcing a man to do heavy labour for next to no money. Michael Hughes, 46, was forced to work for the family for more than 20 years, doing building work and road laying. He said he was made to live in a 1.2m (4ft) wide garden shed with no heating or running water for two years. And last month, a UK man was jailed for two years in the first case of a man holding his wife in domestic servitude. The wife was tortured, forced to do all the chores, and not allowed to leave home, prosecutors said.

Battle of Jutland centenary marked The centenary of the biggest naval engagement of World War One is being marked by commemorative events. A service at St Magnus Cathedral in Orkney paid tribute to the 8,648 sailors who died during the Battle of Jutland. A service of remembrance is also taking place on board HMS Duncan at Jutland Bank, the site of the battle. The battle was fought near the coast of Denmark on 31 May and 1 June 1916 and involved about 250 . It saw the Royal Navy's Grand Fleet, based at Scapa Flow in Orkney, clash with the German High Seas Fleet. Prime Minister David Cameron and German President Joachim Gauck attended the Kirkwall service, along with the Princess Royal and her husband Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, representing the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Events continued with a service at Lyness Cemetery on the island of Hoy - the final resting place for more than 450 service personnel who died in the war, including sailors killed at Jutland. The Duke of Edinburgh had also been due to go to Orkney, but pulled out following medical advice . On the street outside the UK's most northerly cathedral, islanders young and old crowded the pavements as the Royal Marines band led a naval contingent, bayonets gleaming to the morning commemoration. It was a powerful reminder of Orkney's naval history; Britain's Grand Fleet sailed to Jutland from the deep anchorage at Scapa Flow. Nearly 6,000 men never returned. The services at Kirkwall and Lyness mark the loss of 25 ships, British and German, in a clash which resulted in no clear victory. A ago an islander called Margaret Tait captured the mood after the battle. "What a gloom was cast over the town, and how depressed we were to think of our noble ships, brave sailors and officers. " Later, family members and representatives of today's navies will re-tell the stories of Jutland, and remember those who still lie beneath the dark waters of the North Sea. Representatives of all the other nations connected to the battle - Australia, Canada, , Japan, Malta, New Zealand and South Africa - were at the cathedral. The commemoration was led by the minister of the cathedral, Fraser MacNaughton. He was joined by the Royal Navy's chaplain of the fleet, the Venerable Ian Wheatley, and a German naval chaplain. In the North Sea, The German FGS Schleswig-Holstein will join HMS Duncan at Jutland Bank. Many relatives of those who took part in the battle were in Orkney for the commemorations. Alexander Nicol's grandfather, John, drowned when HMS Invincible exploded and went down with the loss of more than 1,000 men. He left a wife and eight children. Mr Nicol said: "I'm fortunate enough to be a grandfather in my own right... My grandfather didn't live to see any of his children get married, let alone to see any of his grandchildren. So to me it's a privilege that he missed out on. " Michael Mulford's father Mark survived the battle as a teenager aboard the HMS Malaya, which was hit eight times with the loss of more than 60 men. Mr Mulford said his father, then 19, had watched as the bodies were sewn into hammocks and released over the side. He told the BBC: "I can't really imagine it because what he ever said about it was absolutely nothing - which speaks volumes for the horror of raw naval warfare. "This was duty, this was service, but whatever else, it was nothing you could talk about at the dinner table. It was not something to regale the grandchildren with. It was long ago, it was dreadful but it had to be done and was done. " Mr Mulford added: "Today is a day for peace and reconciliation. " The Battle of Jutland was the only major sea battle of World War One. It was a battle that Britain, with its long naval tradition, was widely expected to win. Germany's fleet, under the command of Vice-Admiral Reinhard Scheer, was aware of the Royal Navy Grand Fleet's superiority in terms of numbers, and wanted to lure Britain's battle cruisers into a trap. The German admiral's strategy was to draw portions of the British fleet into battle with a strike at Allied shipping off the Norwegian coast. However, British admiralty intelligence intercepted a German radio message saying the High Seas Fleet was preparing to leave port and the commander of the British fleet, Admiral Sir John Jellicoe, sailed from Scapa Flow in Orkney to intercept it. There were a series of clashes throughout 31 May, including the loss of HMS Indefatigable which was hit by German shellfire and exploded in a ball of flame. From a crew of 1,019 men, only two survived. HMS Queen Mary was also sunk, with the loss of 1,266 crew. The main battle began at about 18:30 on 31 May when Vice-Admiral Scheer realised he was up against the entire British Grand Fleet. At the end of the engagement, the British had lost more in terms of ships and men, but it later emerged the Germans had concealed the scuttling of two of their ships, and it soon became seen as a strategic victory for the Royal Navy. In a message on the St Magnus order of service, the Duke of Edinburgh said that, whatever the judgement on the outcome, the commemorations were focused on the "endurance and gallantry" of all those who took part. It was a bleak, windy afternoon but you could still see the Royal Navy's HMS Kent and the German Navy's Schleswig-Holstein in the water through the fog. The Princess Royal and David Cameron were among the six dignitaries who laid wreaths at the Cross of Sacrifice to represent the British and German lives lost. The granite cross was built 10 years after Jutland to pay tribute to the Royal Navy's work. Inscribed on it are the words "Their name liveth for evermore". The graves of those buried at Lyness overlook the waters where many of the sailors served. Many of the bodies recovered from the battle were never identified and their graves bear the inscription "Known Unto God". There are graves here from both British and German sailors - "former enemies now united and at peace", said Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. 2016-05-31 16:50 BBC News www.bbc.co.uk

EU referendum: Can Leave win in the Glasgow shipyards? The shipyards of the River Clyde were the engine of empire. They built whole navies, and liners that sailed the seven seas. And most of them have gone. So when you talk of the European referendum here - about jobs in the old industries, and investment in the future - where do people believe their interest lies? I found scepticism about the arguments on both sides. To the older generation here in Glasgow, the Clyde isn't the river they once knew. You would have seen cranes and gantries filling the sky, all the way from the city westwards to the sea. But the work has dwindled; a new industrial revolution has taken it away. A whole iron landscape has gone. Sitting near the old Fairfield yard in Govan, now run by BAE Systems, I found workers who were broadly sympathetic to EU membership but who believed their livelihoods would, in the end, be decided at home. John Brown - and what a name to carry on Clydeside, an echo of one of the great yards - told me that it would be in Whitehall (and to some extent in Edinburgh) that an industrial strategy would be built. If government wanted to retain a shipbuilding industry - as the French and Germans had done - they'd make it happen. But that didn't mean he wanted to vote Leave. He was of a generation that enjoyed travelling to Europe and he cited his own family as evidence of an internationalist outlook. "I'm married to a Bengali Scot. My son is going out with a Kurdish refugee. " The world had changed, and he wouldn't want it to turn back. His view touches on one of the characteristics of this referendum campaign. In Scotland generally, the Leave side is having a tougher time than south of the border. The all-conquering SNP is campaigning vigorously for Remain and the Conservatives - now the second party in the Holyrood parliament - have a smaller Leave faction than their counterparts in England. Do Scots really feel more positive about the EU? EU referendum: Polls reveal divided nation UK's EU referendum: All you need to know The polls tell a consistent story: Scotland is leaning clearly to Remain. You can sense part of the reason for that in Govan. The men I spoke to across the yard where they are still waiting for the start of work on a Type 26 frigate for the Royal Navy - promised in 2014 just before the Scottish independence referendum and delayed until at least next year - don't see the decision on EU membership as the most important one for them. If the government wants a shipbuilding industry, there will be work - EU rules or not. And as for the Leave argument that new markets would open up, they say there is no magic formula for dealing with the problem of what has been moving steadily away from Europe to East Asia for the last 50 years. Most striking of all is the contrast in the mood compared with the Scottish referendum in 2014, when this place was alive with argument. That vote, you will remember, produced a turnout of around 85% across Scotland, an astonishing figure. The reason was that the debate gripped everyone. By polling day many people said they were fed up - have you ever known an election when that wasn't true? - but most of them took the trouble to make their choice. This time it's different. You can find passion on both sides, but in Scotland as a whole there is none of the feeling of a "once in a generation" vote that was so obvious in 2014. Maybe one referendum was enough for some people. It is also true that although the immigration argument plays a part, it seems less potent here. Who knows what may change in the next three weeks or so, but as things stand, Scotland is more likely to say Remain than Leave. And were England to say Leave, another chapter opens. But that is a story for another day.

Pele sells off his life in the beautiful game It is a conundrum to challenge even the best of hosts. What do you give as a gift to a global football icon who has everything? When your guest is Brazilian legend Pele, the only player to have three World Cup- winning medals, then some creative thinking is needed. As a result the star, full name Edson Arantes do Nascimento, has been the recipient of an amazing cornucopia of strange and exotic items from around the world, first in his playing days, and then as a roving sporting and humanitarian ambassador. They include everything from elaborate crowns and ceremonial daggers, model ships and jet fighters, to more prosaic clocks, dishes, and freedom- of-the-city keys from various municipalities. Now the 75-year-old Fifa Player of the Century is to auction off all of the sporting and cultural memorabilia he has accumulated in a lifetime in football. The sale will take place over three days in London in June, and covers the six decades from Pele's signing for Santos as a 15-year-old in 1956. Going under the hammer will be unique football items, including his three World Cup winner's medals, and a one-off Jules Rimet trophy made for him after Brazil's famous triumph in Mexico in 1970. That World Cup replica is the most expensive item being auctioned, with an estimated price tag of £281,000 to £420,000. The medals are expected to fetch up to £141,000 each, and the ball he scored his 1,000th goal with is estimated to sell for £28,000 to £42,000. Beverly Hills-based Julien's Auctions has been chosen to handle the sale, which also includes personal items such as old passports and driving licences. Over the past 12 months Pele has been in hospital for back, hip and prostate surgery. So is it for health or business reasons that he is now selling? "There are many reasons, there are clearly some personal ones that he alone knows about," Dan Nelles, sports specialist at Julien's Auctions, tells me. Pele himself says: "It was a difficult decision to make but it takes a lot to properly care for these artefacts, and I felt I could do much more good by sharing these items with the world, as well as helping my causes that are important to me. " Mr Nelles adds: "He had a lot of the property in storage, and it wasn't seeing the light of day, which this auction now allows. Also, he wasn't sure what of it his family wanted to keep, and he didn't want it [the collection] to fall by the wayside. "And the Pequeno Principe paediatric hospital in Brazil, which he supports , will receive a proportion. " Mr Nelles says the auction house's "conservative estimate" is that the sale will make £2.5m to £3.5m, but that "the bidding would determine the final price". "There are so many wildcards in the auction, the Jules Rimet trophy, his World Cup medals, soccer boots, which means that ideally we are looking at three times that conservative estimate, and maybe as much as 10 times. "There are also a great number of game-worn items from his career. " Mr Nelles expects a broad spectrum of bidders from football fans and collectors, to sporting museums and business corporations. "Although the auction is in London, we will not just be selling to UK customers, as the auction will be streamed live on our website for overseas bidders to take part," he adds. He says that as well as interest from the obvious football hotbeds of Europe and South America, there will also be interest from China, Japan and South Korea, Dubai and other Gulf states, and the US, Canada and Mexico. A pair of black football boots worn by Pele in the film Escape to Victory are being auctioned. In the film he starred alongside Sylvester Stallone and Michael Caine, as well as England World Cup winning captain Bobby Moore. They portrayed Nazi prisoners playing a propaganda football match during World War Two. Pele is seen near the end of the film wearing these boots as he scored with a dramatic bicycle kick to equalise for the Allied team. "I understand the film has a bit of a cult following in the UK, and these boots are certainly out of the norm," says Mr Nelles. "I think there will be great interest in this highlight from his film career. " They are in the auction catalogue with an estimate of $6,000 to $8,000 (£4,000 to £5,500). Pele holds the record as the youngest player ever to play in, and score in, a World Cup final. He also holds the Guinness World Record for goals scored in a career with 1,283. He played for Brazil's World Cup-winning teams of 1958 and 1970, scoring in both finals, and was in the squad which won in 1962. With club side Santos he twice won the Copa Libertadores and Intercontinental Cup. Later in his career he went on to become the face of "soccer" in the US, as the NASL looked for a sporting breakthrough in the mid-1970s. Pele is many people's choice as the best player of all time. He remains probably the world's most recognisable player, with a Hollywood biopic Birth of A Legend recently premiering in New York. Now the enduring proof of that legendary status has been laid out over more than 1,500 lots, with the auctioneers saying there should be "something for everyone". 2016-05-31 16:50 BBC News www.bbc.co.uk

Numeracy rate falls among pupils in Scotland, latest figures show Pupils in Scotland are doing less well in maths, according to the latest Scottish government figures. Between 2013 and 2015, the proportion of P4 and S2 students performing "well or very well" fell. Pupils from better off areas recorded better results than those from the most deprived communities. The country's new education secretary John Swinney said the statistics reinforced the need to improve attainment. The statistics feature in the latest Scottish Survey of Literacy and Numeracy (SSLN) which is an annual sample monitoring national performance of school children at P4, P7 and S2 in literacy and numeracy. Approximately 10,500 pupils in 2,200 schools took part in the 2015 survey. Numeracy performance was highest at P4 and P7 with 66% of pupils at those stages performing well or very well. At S2, 40% of pupils performed well or very well. After the figures were published, Mr Swinney said: "We have much to do to ensure our young people are supported to improve their understanding and use of numeracy, and our teachers are equipped with the knowledge, skills and confidence to drive up standards in this area. "We have introduced several measures since numeracy statistics were last published in 2014 as part of our firm commitment to address the attainment gap. " Fiona's annual electricity bill is £400. A wind turbine would reduce this bill by 25%. The turbine costs £2,000 to install. From the savings she makes, how many years would it take her to pay for the cost of the wind turbine? (Answer at the bottom of the story) Other findings in the survey included: The Scottish Conservative Party's education spokeswoman Liz Smith said the "appalling" figures showed the SNP was "failing Scotland's pupils and failing to close the attainment gap". She added: "The SNP has completely taken its eye of the ball when it comes to education and helping those from the most deprived backgrounds to succeed. The Scottish Conservatives will hold the Nationalists to account on their poor record on education. "We have said for quite some time that the attainment gap between children from poorer and richer backgrounds remains the biggest challenge in our education system. The SNP must look at narrowing this gap now, as a matter of priority. " Scottish Labour education spokesman Iain Gray called the figures a disgrace. He added: "Our children pay the price in poorer literacy and numeracy skills. No wonder the SNP hid these figures until after the election. They lay bare their failure on education. Performance fell in every category and every stage, and the gap between the richest and the rest increased. "John Swinney says these new figures show the scale of the challenge he faces, but it is a challenge he created himself by slashing investment in education during his near decade in charge of Scotland's finances. " Scottish Green MSP Ross Greer said the survey showed that the new education secretary must "get to grips with the inequality that is becoming embedded in our society". He added: "Rather than pursuing national testing, the Scottish government should be making its priorities in our schools the recruitment and retention of staff and the reduction of staff workload. "Supporting teachers to create stimulating learning environments is essential, as numeracy is a vital skill that equips young people for the challenges of adult life. "

'Ramadan Nights' tours of Israeli Arab villages to take place during Ramadan The Muslim holy month of Ramadan is just around the corner and the initiative “Ramadan Nights,” now in its 10th year, seeks to boost Jewish visits to Arab areas during this month of fasting. During Ramadan, which begins next week, Muslims fast from dawn until dusk, and afterwards they eat and meet with families and friends. Ramadan Nights, organized by NGO Sikkuy – the Association for the Advancement of Civic Equality, and funded by USAID, will take place during Ramadan and any members of the public are invited to take part in tours of Arab localities in four regions of the country. The opening event will be held next Thursday in the city of Taibe in the Arab Triangle region, east of Kfar Saba (for invitees only). “I don’t view this as coexistence, but building a shared society,” Gili Re’i, Co-Director of the Shared Society department at Sikkuy, told The Jerusalem Post. “It is not just about meetings between Arabs and Jews, but an opportunity to become acquainted in a deeper way and learn Arab traditions and customs as well as help the local businesses,” she said. You can register for a tour all over the country on the website shared- tourism.org.il. The tours include one or two guides and participants are emailed the location of the meeting point. The program has expanded over the years and Re’i expects this year to have the biggest turnout yet. Last year 2000 tourists participated. Tours are run all year round as well, she added. Asked about the Arab reaction to the tours, she responded that Arabs are happy with it and that it is a way to promote tourism in the sector. Mazen, a tour guide and organizer from the Arab village of Deir Hana in northern Israel, told the Post that Ramadan Nights is helpful for coexistence and that for the past five years he has helped organize an event with a Christian priest, a Jewish rabbi, and a Muslim imam during Ramadan. The event with the religious representatives will be held this year on June 26. Those that attend will be invited to an iftar breaking fast meal that evening. Tours of the village will take place and Christian residents also are invited to take part in the festivities. “It has been very successful, Jews come from the center of the country to learn about our culture,” said Mazen, adding that he expects around 300 visitors this year. The events are paid for by donations, he added. 2016-06-01 06:08 ARIEL BEN www.jpost.com

Two women sue Colorado city over topless ban calling it discriminatory A growing movement to remove laws against women going topless is headed to court in Colorado. The federal lawsuit filed Tuesday challenges Fort Collins' indecency code, which makes it a crime for women but not men to show their nipples. Brittiany Hoagland and Samantha Six, representatives of the Free the Nipple movement, filed a civil complaint in US District Court in Denver claiming the city's public nudity ordinance is unconstitutional and discriminates against women, according to The Coloradoan. The two women allege the city's regulation violates the free speech clause of the First Amendment as well as the equal protection clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. 'It's a petty and sexist ordinance that shouldn't have gone this far in the first place,' Hoagland told the Coloradoan said. The ordinance treats women and girls differently than men and boys in violation of equal rights required by the Colorado Constitution, according to the complaint. 'Hey, my body is not indecent if his is not indecent,' said Hoagland. Hoagland and Six seek an injunction against the law, which would prevent enforcement of the ordinance and declare that the ordinance is unconstitutional. Six told CBS they aren't going after the city for money, but they do want it changed to promote equality. 'If a man is allowed to do it, so should I,' Six said of going topless. Fort Collins spokesman David Young said in an email that the city is 'evaluating its response' to the lawsuit and has no further comment. The Fort Collins City Council voted unanimously last year to keep a law that prohibits the display of female breasts, rejecting a growing movement to remove gender-specific indecency codes. The hometown of Colorado State University did make an exception for nursing mothers. The law includes exceptions for breastfeeding women, medical emergencies and places where nudity would be expected, such as locker rooms, according to the Coloradoan. But otherwise it remains a $250 fine for a woman over the age of 10 to display her breast 'below the top of the nipple'. The lawsuit is filed by Denver attorney David Lane, who told the Coloradoan that he believes the two women have a strong case. 'My clients believe that any statute that begins "women are prohibited from" is per se unconstitutional,' he said. 'I would tend to agree with that.' If the Fort Collins' ordinance is overturned, it would likely result in the toppling of similar ordinances across the state, according to ABC 7. Other Colorado cities, including Boulder, Denver and Vail, have removed gender-specific language in their indecency codes. Indecency codes are largely local, with very few states having laws on the books banning the exposure of female breasts. A federal judge in Chicago recently ruled against a woman challenging that city's law against women displaying nipples. The woman fought a $150 fine tor participating in a 2014 'Go Topless Day' protest near Lake Michigan. Gender-specific indecency laws have gotten increased attention in recent years. A 2014 film 'Free The Nipple' explored the topic, and celebrities including Rihanna and Miley Cyrus have clashed with social media sites for censoring photos showing their nipples, while not removing photos of topless men.

Blatt to return to Europe, sign deal with Turkish basketball team After failing to land a head coaching position in the NBA, David Blatt is returning to Europe. The American-Israeli coach is on the verge of signing a deal with Turkish Euroleague club Darussafaka Dogus Istanbul that will earn him in the region of two million euros per season. Blatt was offered to return to Maccabi Tel Aviv, which he guided to the Euroleague title before leaving for Cleveland in the summer of 2014. However, he quickly told the club that he has no intention of coming back to coach in Israel. After being sacked by the Cleveland Cavaliers in January, Blatt held interviews with three different teams this summer, but was not offered a position. Blatt, who guided Cleveland to the NBA Finals last year and was surprisingly sacked with the Cavs leading the East at 30-11, is believed to have had offers to work as an assistant coach in the NBA, but was only interested in returning to the league as a head coach. Blatt, who coached Efes Pilsen of Istanbul in 2007/08, was interviewed by the New York Knicks, Houston Rockets and Sacramento Kings, and was considered at one stage as one of the favorites for the Knicks opening together with interim coach Kurt Rambis and former Indiana Pacers coach Frank Vogel. Knicks president Phil Jackson was reportedly beyond “impressed” with Blatt’s “intelligence level” in their meeting, but New York ultimately hired former Phoenix Suns coach Jeff Hornacek. Sacramento brought in former Memphis coach Dave Joerger, with the Rockets signing Mike D’Antoni.

'VR will arbitrage the internet' - serial entrepreneur Gary Vaynerchuk on start-ups, social, and sleep Entrepreneur turned social media star Gary Vaynerchuk stopped by The Drum’s London office last week for a live Social Buzz chat where he was quizzed by The Drum’s editor Stephen Lepitak and head of social Adam Libonatti- Roche. Known for his frank opinions on everything from money- grabbing start-ups to trying to control creativity, nothing was off the table during the hour long chat. Here are some of Gary V's best moments. On Virtual Reality (VR) The only arbitrage to the internet itself is virtual reality. So VR is not going to arbitrage social. VR will become the next platform where our attention is. But it’s not going to grow as fast at a consumer level as most people think. VR right now is like Internet 92. On content and social media What I love social media for is different from most. I truly believe people are way too focused on distribution of content and not building actual relationships. Creating content is the cost of entry to being relevant in society, whether you’re a person or a business. Video is the most powerful platform for me. I don’t think I’ve written the body of an email in three years. How many people in this room didn’t jump on Snapchat because they didn’t understand the ROI? Big brands make the mistake of being too transactional. I believe that the art of marketing is the magic, the variable. It's not the maths. On doing business and being a good person My dream is that I want to prove to the world that you can build a financial empire on being a good person. I think I can change the business landscape forever. A lot of my friends started being mean to tech guys because “that’s what Steve [Jobs, Apple founder] did”. And it affected me. I’m on a crusade. I think capitalism and meritocracy are the greatest traits of our society – there are absolutely ways to beat your competitors to the ground but also be a nice guy and be good to your team. On start-ups This is a generalised statement but the marketers at start-ups with less than 20 employees are probably the weakest group of marketers right now. Rather than getting people with experience, they give the job to upstarts. That's great, but [the work] leaves a lot to be desired. I’ve asked marketers [like this, at start-ups] what they want and they say “I don’t know.” The answer should be, whatever the business needs to fucking happen tomorrow. The carnage that’s about to happen in start-up land with the next economic downturn, which I can’t wait for because I’ve become stunningly disgusted with start-up land. No one is building companies any more. Everyone is building machines for the next round of funding. It’s crazy. Which early stage start-ups are doing it right? The ones that are clearly going to be profitable in the next 12 months and not just living off the next round of funding. Very big start-ups that we all look up to are going to be out of business in 36 months. Watch for the following term – downround. It means X start-up that got valued at $800m in their last round and you just heard they raised new money at $325m. Why? Because no one was going to give them money at a higher range and it was either that or go out of business or lower the valuation of the company. Companies have been getting A and B funding without a business. Any company being arbitraged by the internet in the physical world has to go into full scale data collection. I would incentivise every touch point tomorrow – food should be cheaper if you hand over data. Park in a better spot for data. On Fiverr (a marketplace for creative services) We’re thrilled to laugh at big companies when they get arbitraged but when it hits home…oh no. I respect people’s opinion on the other side. We have to recognise market behaviours. There’s people that get paid $100,000 a day to shoot photographs. And then there’ people that do it for free. That’s the game. And some people are at zero and these platforms can help. Who the fuck are you to tell me what I can't do? On social media influencers There’s a lot that get over paid. I’m obsessed with the long tail. Ther’es people with 300 to 1,000 followers that will do so good for your business. There’s people with 100,000 followers but they’ve pimped every fucking thing under the sun so the depth of their sponsorship isn’t real. On work life balance I’m huge fan of sleep. Everyone should get a lot.
