VOLUME 1 ISSUE 3 MAY/JUNE 2011 PRBIS BRAINSCAN LIFE BEYOND ACQUIRED BRAIN INJURY POWELL RIVER BRAIN INJURY SOCIETY Brain Injury 101 – a Marathon for Awareness Date: Saturday June 11, 2011 Location: Pacific Coastal Highway Our new marathon goal - the Pacific Coastal Highway, which includes Highway 101 Brain Injury 101 – a Marathon for Aware- ness For the purpose of: •promoting public awareness of Acquired Brain Injury •raising money to allow us to continue helping our clients and their caregivers. PRBIS BRAINSCAN Page 2 Walk For Awareness of Acquired Brain Injury In 2009 we walked the length of our section of Highway 101. This part of the Pacific Coastal Highway is 56 kilometers in length, start- ing in Lund, passing through Powell River and ending in Saltery Bay, where the ferry connects to the next part of Highway 101. This first walk was completed over 3 days. Participants were clients, professionals and ordinary citizens who wanted to take part in this public awareness project. Money was raised with pledges of sup- port to the walkers as well as business sponsors for each kilometer. For the second year, we offered more options on distance to com- plete – 1, 2, 5 or 10 kilometers, or for the truly fit, the entire 56 kilo- meters. Those who participated did so by walking, running or bicy- cling. PUBLIC HEALTH MANAGEMENT AT OUTDOOR MUSIC FESTIVALS CAMERON EARL Ass Dip Health Surveying; Masters in Community and Environmental Health Graduate Certificate in Health Science Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Health Science, School of Public Health Faculty of Health Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane January 2006 2 Thesis Abstract Background Information: Outdoor music festivals (OMFs) are complex events to organise with many exceeding the population of a small city. Minimising public health impacts at these events is important with improved event planning and management seen as the best method to achieve this. Key players in improving public health outcomes include the environmental health practitioners (EHPs) working within local government authorities (LGAs) that regulate OMFs and volunteer organisations with an investment in volunteer staff working at events. In order to have a positive impact there is a need for more evidence and to date there has been limited research undertaken in this area. The research aim: The aim of this research program was to enhance event planning and management at OMFs and add to the body of knowledge on volunteers, crowd safety and quality event planning for OMFs. This aim was formulated by the following objectives. 1. To investigate the capacity of volunteers working at OMFs to successfully contribute to public health and emergency management; 2. To identify the key factors that can be used to improve public health management at OMFs; and 3. To identify priority concerns and influential factors that are most likely to have an impact on crowd behaviour and safety for patrons attending OMFs. -

For three days, 280 hectares of peaceful farm country in the beautiful Somerset Valley become a vast, colourful tent city. The Glastonbury Festival is Britain's largest outdoor rock concert, and it attracts crowds of more than 100,000 people. It has six separate stages for musicians to play on. It has eighteen markets where fans can buy things. It has its own daily newspaper and is even broadcast live on television. It also raises large amounts of money for several charities, including Greenpeace and the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. Glastonbury is just one of many events on the international music festival calendar each year. For dance music fans, there's Creamfields, the Essential Festival and Homelands - all in the UK. Rock fans have Roskilde Festival in Denmark, Fuji Rock and Summer Sonic in Japan, and the Livid Festival and the Big Day Out in Australia. And the crowds just keep getting bigger. In fact, the size of some of these festivals is causing problems. Since the deaths of nine people at Roskiide in 2000 and the death of a young woman at the 2001 Big Day Out, festival organisers and local police have been working together to make sure festival-goers stay safe. Despite these tragic events, festivals are more popular than ever. And it's not just about the music. It's about making new friends and partying non-stop for days at a time. It's about dancing till you can't stand up anymore and then crashing in someone else's tent. -

On learning that Matt Brown, Minister for Housing, was to tour Waterloo with members of the Redfern Waterloo Chamber of Commerce, the SSH approached the Minister’s department for information. The Department denied plans for the meeting, only to then concede it would take place. A request for a photo of the Minister and his hosts was met with resistance. Arriving at Waterloo Green at a time confirmed by the RWCC, the SSH learned that, at the Minister’s behest, the meeting had taken place some two hours earlier. In a briefing paper leaked to the SSH the RWCC said it was concerned to “minimise the negative impact of the area” that has resulted from the Government’s location of a large number of “high needs people in Redfern Waterloo public housing”. “Praying Angrily” Psalm 69 Erica Cooper Assistant Minister August 4, 2019 The Ninth Sunday of Pentecost In 1993 I attended my very first rock concert. Or concerts, I should say. In the early 90’s Lollapalooza was a budding 4-day outdoor music festival touring the U.S. with top billing bands like Sonic Youth, the Breeders and Green Day. I was thirteen years old, still in middle school, and really had no business being there, but I had some older high school friends who invited me to go, with their mom chaperoning in the background of course. It was hot and humid that day, as is always the case in Atlanta in July. I had been chugging water all afternoon to stay hydrated, and soon needed to use the bathroom. Between bands, I took my friend Nori with me as we headed out on a thirty-minute journey across the field, weaving a bobbing through 20,000 sweaty, sunburned Gen-Xers. We made it to the bathroom finally, and were delighted that the next band had not yet gone on stage, we didn’t miss out on anything. So we headed back across the field to our area where the rest of our friends were. But, somewhere in the middle of our journey, Nori and I lost one another. I looked around but couldn’t find her, and at this same time, another band started to play, so I stopped where I was to listen. This band was unfamiliar to me, a band called Rage Against the Machine. At first I didn’t notice the group of 20- something shirtless men gathering around me. -

RESIDENTIAL PARKS AMENDMENT (REGISTER) BILL 2011 Agreement in Principle Debate resumed from 11 August 2011. Ms CHERIE BURTON (Kogarah) [10.00 a.m.]: I also welcome to the Parliament students from Aberdeen Public School. The objects of the Residential Parks Amendment (Register) Bill 2011 are as follows: (a) to provide for the establishment of a register of residential parks, which is to contain certain information about residential parks, and (b) to require park owners or park managers to provide information about residential parks for entry in the register. The Opposition does not oppose this bill which will establish and maintain a register of all residential parks in New South Wales. Much was done by the former Government to ensure that the rights of caravan park residents were not ignored. I have spoken to a few residential groups who welcome this bill and who are positive about the establishment of a register. They believe it will give them more certainty as permanent residents of caravan parks. However, we need to establish, first, that the residents are not tourists; residential parks and caravans are home to many people in our community. A report prepared by the Legislative Council Standing Committee on Social Issues established three categories of people who live in caravan parks. The first category, usually retirees, is people who live there by choice because it is a way of life for them. -

To inform the Marketing and Events Committee of the events conducted within the City of Melbourne between 1 November 2006 and 28 February 2007. Recommendation from Management 2. That the Marketing and Events Committee accepts the Events Report – 1 November 2006 to 28 February 2007. Comments 3. The events outlined in this report relate to those coordinated through the Events Melbourne Branch of the City of Melbourne. A small number of arts events are coordinated through the Arts & Culture Branch and are not within the scope of this report. Water Restrictions and Events 4. The City of Melbourne has initiated a number of proactive strategies to significantly reduce the water consumption and water usage during events as a result of the current state-wide water restrictions. 5. These strategies involve utilising alternative or modified water-filled traffic management treatments; minimising water usage during vending, food preparation and drinking water fountains; using concrete/sand-filled weights instead of water-filled weights in infrastructure weighting; and utilising Class A recycled water for portable toilet flushing rather than drinking water. 6. As a result of these strategies being implemented, recent events have significantly reduced the level of water usage during events, for example New Year’s Eve 2006 utilised 250,000 litres less water and Moomba Waterfest utilised 300,000 litres less water than in previous years.
