MODC_C15.qxd 12/13/07 1:52 PM Page 280 15 Michel Foucault Introductory note Michel Foucault (1926–84) was, at the time of his death, Professor of the History of Systems of Thought at the Collège de France in Paris, a title that succeeds (or fails) as much as any other single phrase in the effort to encapsulate his unique, inter-disciplinary field of research. He has been variously described as philo- sopher, social scientist, and historian of ideas. He was certainly one of the most powerful and influential figures in a remarkable galaxy of intellectual stars who shone in Paris in the 1960s and 70s. Foucault was often at pains to deny that he was a ‘structuralist’, but he may legitimately be described as a post-structuralist. Structuralism ignored or dis- trusted the superficial appearances or commonsense view of cultural phenomena in its efforts to grasp the conditions of their possibility. Foucault did the same, but where the structuralists, like Lévi-Strauss, or the early Barthes, used language and linguistics as their methodological model or tool, Foucault used the history of social and political institutions and discourses. As one of his commentators (Paul Robinow) has said, ‘Foucault is highly suspicious of claims to universal truths. He doesn’t refute them; instead his consistent response is to historicize grand abstrac- tions.’ His example has had a powerful effect upon the writing of literary history in Britain and America. The essay ‘What is an Author?’ is typical of this historicizing approach. Foucault shows that the idea of the author, which we tend to take for granted, as a timeless, irreducible category, is, rather, a ‘function’ of discourse which has changed in the course of history. -

CRITICAL NOTICE Why We Need Ordinary Language Philosophy Sandra Laugier, Translated by Daniela Ginsberg, The University of Chicago Press, Chicago, 2013, pp. 168, £ 24.50. ISBN-13: 978-0-226-47054-2 (cloth). Reviewed by Derek A. McDougall Originally published in French in the year 2000, the English version of Sandra Laugier’s short book of 10 Chapters plus an Introduction and Conclusion, has a 7 page Preface, 9 pages of Notes, a brief Bibliography and 121 pages of actual text. The reading of Wittgenstein and Austin that she provides is distinctly Cavellian in character. Indeed, Stanley Cavell in a dust-cover quote, remarks that her work is already influential in France and Italy, exciting as it does a new interest in ‘language conceived not only as a cognitive capacity but also as used, and meant, as part of our form of life’. Cavell goes on to say that this new translation is not merely welcome but indispensable, and has at least the capacity to alter prevailing views about the philosophy of language, so affecting what we have come to think of as the ‘analytic-continental divide’. Toril Moi of Duke Uni., in another dust-cover quote, states that Laugier’s reading of Wittgenstein-Austin-Cavell shows how their claim that ‘to speak about language is to speak about the world is an antimetaphysical revolution in philosophy that tranforms our understanding of epistemology and ethics.’ She concludes with the thought that anyone who wishes to understand what ‘ordinary language philosophy’ means today should read this book. This is a large claim to make, and anyone who is inclined to read Wittgenstein and Austin strictly in their own terms, and with their own avowed intentions - where discernible - steadily in view, is almost bound to conclude that it is simply not true. -
French Theory
FLUSSER STUDIES 31 Martha Schwendener Flusser and French Theory “Saussure did not impress me.”1 So wrote Flusser in the 1969 essay “In Search of Meaning (Philosoph- ical Self-portrait),” before he returned to Europe and settled for the last decades of his life in France. Rather than Francophone writers – and particularly Saussure, the linguist and figurehead of a strain of language philosophy that would guide French thought in the twentieth century – Flusser acknowledged a host of other thinkers: Kant, Camus, José Ortega y Gasset, Nietzsche, Cassirer, Cohen, Hartmann, the entire Marburg School, the Viennese School, Bertrand Russell, Wittgenstein, and Heidegger, Joyce, Pound, Eliot, Goethe, Thomas Mann, and particularly Kafka and Rilke. In other words, practically anything but French writers. However, the last two decades of Flusser’s life brought him in close con- tact with French thinkers, from Abraham Moles to Jean Baudrillard. Moreover, his increasing contact with German media theory and the U.S. art world, which was besotted with French “theory” (a desig- nation I will explain in a moment) were crucial to his legacy. Paradoxically, even though Flusser’s reception lagged in France, I would argue that his importance is in large part due to the avenues opened up by French theory and the “model” – one of Flusser’s favorite terms – for his own visionary thinking. First, French “theory.” Anaël Lejeune, Olivier Mignon, and Raphaël Pirenne write that French theory refers “roughly to the structuralist and post-structuralist thought that developed in France from the 1960s to the 1980s” and which should be differentiated from “French thought.”1 French theory, as opposed to French thought, offered a degree of heterogeneity and intellectual freedom – which is why it was largely adopted by radical thinkers, in the vein of Flusser. -

humanities Article Assembling the Assemblage: Developing Schizocartography in Support of an Urban Semiology Tina Richardson School of Design, University of Leeds, Leeds LS2 9JT, UK; [email protected] Received: 7 June 2017; Accepted: 6 July 2017; Published: 10 July 2017 Abstract: This article looks at the formulation of a methodology that incorporates a walking-based practice and borrows from a variety of theories in order to create a flexible tool that is able to critique and express the multiplicities of experiences produced by moving about the built environment. Inherent in postmodernism is the availability of a multitude of objects (or texts) available for reuse, reinterpretation, and appropriation under the umbrella of bricolage. The author discusses her development of schizocartography (the conflation of a phrase belonging to Félix Guattari) and how she has incorporated elements from Situationist psychogeography, Marxist geography, and poststructural theory and placed them alongside theories that examine subjectivity. This toolbox enables multiple possibilities for interpretation which reflect the actual heterogeneity of place and also mirror the complexities that are integral in challenging the totalizing perspective of space that capitalism encourages. Introduction The ways that we develop methods to help us understand, critique, and express our responses to urban space are as dynamic and ever-changing as the geographical space is that we are presented with as our object of study. The built environment can often operate on our psyches in a subliminal fashion, such that its changes—even when this involves substantial developments—become incorporated into our spatial awareness quickly and subtly. -
The Pragmatic Turn in Philosophy
Introduction n recent years the classical authors of Anglo-Saxon pragmatism have gar- Inered a renewed importance in international philosophical circles. In the aftermath of the linguistic turn, philosophers such as Charles S. Peirce, William James, George H. Mead, Ferdinand C. S. Schiller, and John Dewey are being reread alongside, for example, recent postmodern and deconstructivist thought as alternatives to a traditional orientation toward the concerns of a represen- tationalist epistemology. In the context of contemporary continental thought, the work of Jacques Derrida, Jean-Francois Lyotard, and Gilles Deleuze comprises just a few examples of a culturewide assault on a metaphysical worldview premised on what Michel Foucault called the empirico-transcendental doublet, and presents a wealth of potential exchange with the pragmatist critique of representationalism. In both cases, aspects of pragmatist thought are being used to add flexibility to the conceptual tools of modern philoso- phy, in order to promote a style of philosophizing more apt to dealing with the problems of everyday life. The hope for a pragmatic “renewing of phi- losophy” (Putnam) evidenced in these trends has led to an analytic reexami- nation of some of the fundamental positions in modern continental thought as well, and to a recognition of previously unacknowledged or underappreciated pragmatic elements in thinkers like Kant, Hegel, Nietzsche, Heidegger, and Wittgenstein. Within the current analytic discussions, a wide spectrum of differing and at times completely heterogeneous forms of neopragmatism can be distinguished, which for heuristic purposes can be grouped into two general categories according to the type of discursive strategy employed. The first of these consists in a conscious inflation of the concept of pragmatism in order to establish it as widely as possible within the disciplinary discourse of philosophy. -

The Museum of Architecture and Design Is Launching an Open Call For
The Museum of Architecture and Design is launching an open call for participation in FARAWAY, SO CLOSE – 25th Biennial of Design, curated by editor and curator Angela Rui and MAO curator Maja Vardjan. The open call is dedicated to designers, architects, filmmakers, graphic designers, interaction designers, illustrators, writers, animators, photographers, researchers and other interdisciplinary agents who see the biennial as an experimental, collaborative platform for testing, developing and sharing their own approaches and expertise around the issues and structure of the new biennial format. Seven well-known individuals from host-country Slovenia have been selected for their unique personal and professional projects outside the field of design. Their knowledge and originality will be interpreted by seven international creative figures chosen for their ability to use design and architecture as tools for investigating contemporary issues . By testing disciplines outside their comfort zone, FARAWAY, SO CLOSE will present possible scenarios that enquire into global as well as local issues. Selected participants will work within seven teams : Andrej Detela and Studio Formafantasma on UNDERGROUND RELEASE, Matej Feguš and Matali Crasset on OCCUPYING WOODS, Iztok Kova č and Point Supreme on AFTER UTOPIA, Mojca Kumerdej and Didier Faustino on BRAND NEW- COEXISTENCE, Klemen Košir and Studio Mischer’Traxler on COUNTRYSIDE RELOADED, Renata Salecl and Studio Folder on resilience of the Past, and Marin Medak and Odo Fioravanti on NEW HEROES. After choosing a team, the selected participants will actively join their research and design process, which will start with the Kick-off event in September 2016 in Ljubljana. From 25 May to 29 October 2017 in Ljubljana, FARAWAY, SO CLOSE – the 25th Biennial of Design – will present seven local interventions along with the outcomes of the exploratory work of each project team, gathered under the main exhibition umbrella and accompanied by the dedicated catalogue. -
