In Chelmsford, Mass., Todd Melanson sees such a reaction all the time as he leads visitors around the solar array at the town’s Crooked Spring Water Treatment Plant. But if Melanson is still amazed by the sight, he did not show it during a NEIWPCC visit late last summer. Kaye U.S. Geological Survey (retired) 150 Causeway Street, Suite 1001 Boston, MA 02114 Abstract Recent mapping of the Boston Basin has shown that the sedimentary and rhyolitic and andesitic volcanic rocks are interbedded and that all lithic types interfinger, reflecting a wide range of depositional environments, including: alluvial, fluviatile, lacustrine, lagoonal, and marine-shelf. In addition to the well-known sedimentary rocks, such as argillite and conglomerate, we now recognize calcareous argillites, gypsiferous argillites of hypersaline origin, black argillite, red beds, turbidity current deposits, and alluvial fan deposits. The depositional setting seems to have been a tectonically active, block-faulted terrane in a coastal area. The granites that underlie these rocks are approximately the same age, some of them intruding the lower part of the sedimentary and volcanic section and feeding the rhyolitic Volcanics within the section. All of this took place in Late Proterozoic Z-Cambrian time. -
