Malpighia glabra L. Malpighiaceae LOCAL NAMES English (West Indian cherry); French (cerise-antillaise); Thai (choeri); Vietnamese (so'ri) BOTANIC DESCRIPTION Malpighia glabra is a shrub or small evergreen tree, 2-3(-6) m tall, with spreading, more or less drooping branches on a short trunk. Leaves opposite, ovate to elliptic-lanceolate, 2-8 cm x 1-4 cm, entire or undulating, dark green and glossy above, petiole short. Fruits and foliage (USDA GRIN) Inflorescences sessile or short-peduncled axillary cymes with 3-5 flowers; flowers bisexual, 1-2 cm in diameter, pinkish to reddish; calyx with 6-10 large sessile glands; petals 5, fringed, slender-clawed; stamens 10, filaments united below. Fruit a bright-red, juicy drupe, depressed-ovoid, 1-3 cm in diameter and weighing 3-5 g, usually in pairs or threes, obscurely 3-lobed; skin thin, flesh soft, orange, acid to subacid. Seeds 3, triangular, ridged. In Florida, 'Florida Sweet' is a high-yielding cultivar. A distinction is sometimes made in nomenclature between wild and cultivated (improved) plants, the latter being called M. punicifolia L. It is now, however, generally accepted that both taxa belong to M. glabra. M. coccigera L. and M. urens L. are incidentally cultivated in South-East Asia for the same purposes as M. glabra. BIOLOGY In Puerto Rico flowering appeared to be independent of the daylength and several cropping periods are possible per year, especially with alternating dry and rainy periods. The flowers are pollinated by insects; honey bees substantially improve fruit set. Self- and cross-incompatibiliy have been reported. Fruits ripen completely 3-4 weeks after flowering. -

Those genera and the other two in which latex is known (Lophanthera and Spachea) constitute a single tribe, Galphimieae, that is at or near the base of the family's phylogeny, which suggests that latex in the Malpighiaceae may indicate an ancestor shared with the Euphorbiaceae. Flowers papilionaceous; sepals united in a cupuliform, weakly 5-toothed tube; standard petal reflexed; keel incurved, the petals united. Stamens 10; 9 united by the filaments in a tube, 1 free. Fruit dehiscent, flat, narrow; seeds numerous. 1. Gliricidia sepium (Jacquin) Kunth ex Grisebach, Abhandlungen der Akademie der Wissenschaften, Gottingen 7: 52 (1857). MADRE DE CACAO (Surinam); ACACIA DES ANTILLES (French Guiana). Tree to 9 m; branches hairy when young; poisonous. Leaves with 4-8 pairs of leaflets; leaflets elliptical, acuminate, often dark-spotted or -blotched beneath, to 7 x 3 (-4) cm. Inflorescence to 15 cm. Petals pale purplish-pink, c.1.2 cm; standard petal marked with yellow from middle to base. Fruit narrowly oblong, somewhat woody, to 15 x 1.2 cm; seeds up to 11 per fruit. Range: Mexico to South America. Grown as an ornamental in the Botanic Gardens, Georgetown, Guyana (Index Seminum, 1982) and in French Guiana (de Granville, 1985). Grown as a shade tree in Surinam (Ostendorf, 1962). In tropical America this species is often interplanted with coffee and cacao trees to shade them; it is recommended for intensified utilization as a fuelwood for the humid tropics (National Academy of Sciences, 1980; Little, 1983). 9. Gilman2 Introduction This compact, upright, rounded, evergreen shrub is covered during most of the year with small, very showy, yellow flowers (Fig. 1). The loose, open natural growth habit is ideal for informal plantings but it will need some pruning to keep from being too leggy. It can be sheared into a more formal hedge and can be used for topicary, but some flowers will be trimmed off at each pruning. Sheared plants often thin out at the bottom. To help prevent this, keep the bottom of a hedge slightly wider than the top to allow sunlight to reach the lower foliage. There are several examples in Florida of Thryallis pruned into a small, multiple-trunked tree. These genera have been used to generate the name of 2 orders, 10 families, 7 sub- families, 16 tribes and 9 subtribes; at least 1 order (Calycerales) and 5 families (Calyce- raceae, Cobaeaceae, Epacridaceae, Eucryphyaceae and Oleandraceae) are generally accepted and under current use. Most of these taxa belong to the tropical and subtropical flora.
