At Variance with Guénon In my early youth, my salvation was Shrī Shankara, and with him, spiritual virtue; And so I was able to learn: only inspiration, And not vain thinking, can give Wisdom. Then came the notion of tradition: Only the sacred may carry the sacred. All this Guénon wrote in his works with great diligence And zeal. But much still remained to be said!1 Frithjof Schuon always respected the metaphysical and conceptual frame- work articulated by René Guénon, whose writings were particularly important to him at the time when he was beginning to formulate his own perspective. Starting in 1939 and continuing throughout the rest of his life, Schuon delved into many subjects that Guénon never considered or only touched upon lightly, including Buddhism and American Indian spiritu- ality, sacred art in its diverse forms, and, especially, the operative aspects of spiritual realization—prayer of the heart and the human virtues. Martin Lings, who was Guénon’s personal assistant in Cairo during the 1940s, later expressed an observation that first became apparent in these years: “There is nothing in Guénon that is not to be found in Schuon. There is much in Schuon that is not to be found in Guénon.”2 When, after the war, com- munication could be resumed between Guénon in Cairo and Schuon in Lausanne, Guénon was generally supportive of Schuon’s point of view on these subjects and particularly appreciative of Schuon’s interest in American Indian spirituality. -

Al Azhar - Study Exchange Programme Egypt and England – a significant study exchange: Christians and Muslims learning about each other’s faith A significant development and strengthening of the relationship between the Anglican Communion and Al Azhar Al Sharif, the centre of Islamic learning in Cairo, Egypt, has taken place during November through two significant study visits. The first is that of the Grand Mufti of Egypt, His Eminence Dr Ali Gomaa, who delivered a talk at the University of Cambridge during the first week of November. A longer stay for study, of a month’s duration, was made by three younger Muslim scholars (El Sayed Mohamed Abdalla Amin, Farouk Rezq Bekhit Sayyid, Sameh Mustafa Muhammad Asal, graduate teaching assistants at the Faculty of Languages and Translation, Department of Islamic Studies in English, Al Azhar University) to Ridley Hall Theological College, Cambridge, England, November 1-29. Ridley Hall is well-known as a training centre for future Anglican clergy. Study exchange linked to Anglican Communion Al Azhar dialogue This double visit, of both Dr Gomaa, an eminent international Muslim scholar, and of three future Muslim religious leaders, is linked to the study exchange agreement signed by the Anglican Communion and Al Azhar Al Sharif in September 2005 at Lambeth Palace and ratified in the presence of Sheikh Al Azhar, Dr Mohamed Tantawy, at a meeting held at Al Azhar in September 2006. Signed: 2 A BSTRACT Problem: Academic study of religious healing has recognised its symbolic aspects, but has tended to frame practice as ritual, knowledge as belief. In contrast, studies of scientific psychiatry recognise that discipline as grounded in intellectual tradition and naturalistic empiricism. This asymmetry can be addressed if: (a) psychiatry is recognised as a form of “religious healing”; (b) religious healing can be shown to have an intellectual tradition which, although not naturalistic, is grounded in experience. Such an analysis may help to reveal why globalisation has meant the worldwide spread not only of modern scientific medicine, but of religious healing. An especially useful form of religious healing to contrast with scientific medicine is Sufi healing as practised by the Naqshbandi-Haqqani order, which has become remarkable for its spread in the “West” and its adaptation to vernacular cultures. Research questions: (1) How is knowledge generated and transmitted in the Naqshbandi- Haqqani order? (2) How is healing understood and done in the Order? (3) How does the Order find a role in the modern world, and in the West in particular? Methods: Anthropological analysis of psychiatry as religious healing; review of previous studies of Sufi healing and the Naqshbandi-Haqqani order; ethnographic participant observation in the Naqshbandi-Haqqani order, with a special focus on healing. -

The first part entails an explication of Hellenic cosmology and metaphysics in its traditional understanding, as the Western component of classical Indo-European philosophy. It includes an overview of the relevant contributions by the Presocratics, Plato, Aristotle, and the Neoplatonists, focussing on the structure and origin of both the intelligible and sensible worlds. Salient aspects thereof are the movement from the transcendent Principle into the realm of Manifestation by means of the interaction between Essence and Substance; the role of the Logos, being the equivalent of Plato’s Demiurge and Aristotle’s Prime Mover, in the cosmogonic process; the interaction between Intellect and Necessity in the formation of the cosmos; the various kinds of causality contributing to the establishment of physical reality; and the priority of being over becoming, which in the case of living organisms entails the primacy of soul over body. -

The substance of a human being is to believe in the existence of Lord. This is acknowledged in tauhid rububiyah of Islām people, while what distinguishes Islām from other religions is tauhiduluhiyyah. Basically, the human having religion is same. The concept of Lord in Islâm is based on revelation. The revelation here is not imagination at all as the fancy of a great poet or the artist's claim to themselves. The revelation here is not the apostolic’s inspiration as claimed by biblical writers of the Bible, not the illuminative intuition of a scientist or a sharp-looking expert. The substance of FrithjofSchuont thought about the point of religions, although the external level of religion is different, but in essence all religions are the same. In other words, the unity of religions occurs at a transcendent level. Schuon'sargues that all religions have two realities or essence, namely exoteric and esoteric. The nature of exoterics is the essence of birth, which all religions have different, contradictory, contradictory dogmas, laws, rituals and beliefs. -

ICT Jihadi Monitoring Group INSIGHTS The Grozny Conference in Chechnya – Is the Salafi Movement a Rotten Fruit of Sunni Islam? Dr. Michael Barak International Institute for Counter Terrorism (ICT) Additional resources are available on the ICT Website: www.ict.org.il The Salafi movement in Sunni Islam has experienced a strong jolt recently, not only in terms of a challenge to its worldview but even to its very existence. On August 25-27, an international conference held in Grozny, Chechnya, was attended by over 200 leading Muslim clerics from various Islamic schools of thought, sponsored by the president of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov (see photo), and with the blessing of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Participants addressed the question, “Who are the people of the Sunna?” and determined that authentic Sunni Islam is not a militant religion that preaches violence, but rather a religion characterized by inclusion and tolerance towards the “other”. This stands in contrast to the strict interpretation by Salafi-jihadist terrorist organizations, such as Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State, that justify the use of violence against Muslims who they do not consider to be pure Sunnis. On the surface, it is apparent that the conference was designed to undermine the ideological platform that feeds power to Salafi-jihadist terrorist organizations. However, in practice, it embodies a poignant political statement against the Salafi movement overall, even on non-violent issues, and against Saudi Arabia in particular for bearing responsibility for the radicalized thinking among young Muslims and the spread of terrorism. This was indicated by the fact that not one Salafi Ramzan Kadyrov representative from around the world was invited to the conference. -

Frithjof Schuon will be recognized by many readers of this journal as the leading representative of the Traditionalist school (of Guenon, Coomaraswamy, et al.) which holds that though Revelation must by definition be of and from the one and only God, it must articulate itself variously to conform to the human variety-the races and civilizations which, while comprizing mankind collectively, differ impor tantly among themseives. A teucher must speak the language his students understand. He must also use it to impart what his students, often individually, most need to hear. Those who have read my Introduction to Schuon's The Transcendent Unity of Religions, recently reissued with a new chapter by the Theosophical Publishing House, will recognize that (as far as I can see) this is the only way we can approach the world's great religions with absolute respect without falling into an unworkable relativism. -

Sophia Perennis Vol. 1, Number 1, 2009 Iranian Institute of Philosophy Tehran/Iran Muslim Intellectuals and the Perennial Philosophy in the Twentieth Century1 Zachary Markwith Abstract: This paper will examine how Muslim intellectuals, as a result of their attachment to the doctrine of Divine Unity (tawh¤īd), the Quran, Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad, and the doctrines and methods of Sufism, were largely responsible for the restating of the perennial philosophy in the West in the twentieth century. The article consists of four sections: an introduction to the term 'philosophia perennis'; the place of the perennial philosophy in the Qur'an and Sunnah; the perennial philosophy and the Islamic intellectual Tradition; the lives, writings, and intellectual contributions of the five most important Muslim perennialists of the twentieth century, namely, Guénon, Schuon, Burckhardt, Lings, and Nasr The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the inextricable link between Islam and the perennial philosophy in the twentieth century, while defending the role that orthodoxy and orthopraxy play in any authentic expression of the perennial philosophy.
