We mapped phylogenetic diversity and richness levels and compared phylogenetic distances in pitviper subsets selected via endemism, richness, threat, habitat loss, biome type and the presence in biodiversity hotspots to values obtained in randomized assemblages. Results Evolutionary distinctiveness differed according to the phylogeny used, and conservation assessment ranks varied according to the chosen proxy of extinction risk. Two of the three main areas of high phylogenetic diversity were coincident with areas of high species richness. A third area was identified only by one phylogeny and was not a richness hotspot. Faunal assemblages identified by level of endemism, habitat loss, biome type or the presence in biodiversity hotspots captured phylogenetic diversity levels no better than random assem- blages. -

MEDICAL PROBLEMS AND TREATMENT CONSIDERATIONS FOR THE RED IMPORTED FIRE ANT Bastiaan M. Drees, Professor and Extension Entomologist DISCLAIMER: This fact sheet provides a review of information gathered regarding medical aspects of the red imported fire ant. As such, this fact sheet is not intended to provide treatment recommendations for fire ant stings or reactions that may develop as a result of a stinging incident. Readers are encouraged to seek health-related advice and recommendations from their medical doctors, allergists or other appropriate specialists. Imported fire ants, which include the red imported fire ant - Solenopsis invicta Buren (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), the black imported fire ant - Solenopsis richteri Forel and the hybrid between S. invicta and S. richteri, cause medical problems when sterile female worker ants from a colony sting and inject a venom that cause localized sterile blisters, whole body allergic reactions such as anaphylactic shock and occasionally death. In Texas, S. invicta is the only imported fire ant, although several species of native fire ants occur in the state such as the tropical fire ant, S. geminata (Fabricius), and the desert fire ant, S. xyloni McCook, which are also capable of stinging (see FAPFS010 and 013 for identification keys). Over 40 million people live in areas infested by the red imported fire ant in the southeastern United States. An estimated 14 million people are stung annually. According to The Scripps Howard Texas Poll (March 2000), 79 percent of Texans have been stung by fire ants in the year of the survey, while 20% of Texans report not ever having been stung. -

Whatʼs New from Juntendo University, Tokyo Juntendo Medical Journal 2017. 63(5), 322-325 Peking University - Juntendo University Joint Symposium on Cancer Research and Treatment ADAM28 (a Disintegrin and Metalloproteinase 28) in Cancer Cell Proliferation and Progression YASUNORI OKADA* *Department of Pathophysiology for Locomotive and Neoplastic Diseases, Juntendo University Graduate School of Medicine, Tokyo, Japan A disintegrinandmetalloproteinase 28 (ADAM28) is overexpressedpredominantlyby carcinoma cells in more than 70% of the non-small cell lung carcinomas, showing positive correlations with carcinoma cell proliferation and metastasis. ADAM28 cleaves insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3) in the IGF-I/IGFBP-3 complex, leading to stimulation of cell proliferation by intact IGF-I released from the complex. ADAM28 also degrades von Willebrand factor (VWF), which induces apoptosis in human carcinoma cell lines with negligible ADAM28 expression, andthe VWF digestionby ADAM28-expressing carcinoma cells facilitates them to escape from VWF-induced apoptosis, resulting in promotion of metastasis. We have developed human antibodies against ADAM28 andshown that one of them significantly inhibits tumor growth andmetastasis using lung adenocarcinoma cells. Our data suggest that ADAM28 may be a new molecular target for therapy of the patients with ADAM28-expressing non-small cell lung carcinoma. E-mail : [email protected] Abstract Most West Indian snakes of the family Dipsadidae belong to the Subfamily Xenodontinae and Tribe Alsophiini. As recognized here, alsophiine snakes are exclusively West Indian and comprise 43 species distributed throughout the region. These snakes are slender and typically fast-moving (active foraging), diurnal species often called racers. For the last four decades, their classification into six genera was based on a study utilizing hemipenial and external morphology and which concluded that their biogeographic history involved multiple colonizations from the mainland. Although subsequent studies have mostly disagreed with that phylogeny and taxonomy, no major changes in the classification have been proposed until now. Here we present a DNA sequence analysis of five mitochondrial genes and one nuclear gene in 35 species and subspecies of alsophiines. Our results are more consistent with geography than previous classifications based on morphology, and support a reclassification of the species of alsophiines into seven named and three new genera: Alsophis Fitzinger (Lesser Antilles), Arrhyton Günther (Cuba), Borikenophis Hedges & Vidal gen. -

China; *[email protected], **[email protected] (Corresponding author), ***[email protected] Abstract Seven allied species of the funnel-weaver spider genus Agelena Walckenaer, 1805, including the type species Agelena labyrinthica (Clerck, 1757), known to occur in Asia and Europe, are reviewed on the basis of the similarity of genital structures. Two new species are described: Agelena chayu sp. nov. and Agelena cuspidata sp. nov. The specific name A. silvatica Oliger, 1983 is revalidated. The female is newly described for A. injuria Fox, 1936. Two specific names are newly synony- mized: Agelena daoxianensis Peng, Gong et Kim, 1996 with A. silvatica Oliger, 1983, and A. sub- limbata Wang, 1991 with A. limbata Thorell, 1897. Some names are proposed for these species to represent some particular genital structures: conductor ventral apophysis, conductor median apo- physis, conductor distal apophysis and conductor dorsal apophysis for male palp and spermathecal head, spermathecal stalk, spermathecal base and spermathecal apophysis for female epigynum. Key words: genital structure, revalidation, synonym, review, taxonomy Introduction The funnel-weaver spider genus Agelena was erected by Walckenaer (1805) with the type species Araneus labyrinthicus Clerck, 1757.
