  • CENTRAL ORGAN of CPI(ML) DECEMBER 2020 Rs.15
DECEMBER 2020 Rs.15 COVER STORY CENTRAL ORGAN OF CPI(ML) COVER STORY (CPIML Central Committee Statement) We condemn the raids by the National Investigative Agency on a range of civil society groups and individuals in Jammu and Kashmir, Bengaluru, and Delhi. The NIA claims the raids are to crackdown on “terror funding” – but that is a transparent excuse to harass and silence all those expressing concern for the rights and wellbeing of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. By using the NIA to crack down on human rights defenders, humanitarian groups, journalists, and citizens, the Modi regime is seeking to ensure that there are no witnesses for its crimes against the people of J&K. The groups and individuals targeted by the NIA have a long and impressive track record of human rights and humanitarian work. The Jammu Kashmir Coalition of Civil Society (JKCCS), for instance, has researched and documented reports on unmarked mass graves, fake encounters, custodial torture, sexual violence and the impact of violence on children in J&K. The JKCCS has also pursued the cause of a credible probe to ensure justice for the Kashmiri Pandits killed in the Valley. The Association of Parents of Disappeared Persons (APDP) is an organisation that has led one of the longest standing peaceful struggles for justice and truth: organising parents of persons “disappeared” by the state forces to march every week in their memory. Another target of the NIA raids is Zafarul Islam Khan, former chairperson of the Delhi Minorities Commission, and founding editor of the Milli Gazette newspaper, who runs the humanitarian group Charity Alliance.

  • Through the Looking Glass: BAE Systems
THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS BAE Systems, Corporate Social Responsibility and war, insecurity and climate change May 2019 MILITARY SPENDING: A HIDDEN DRIVER OF CLIMATE CHANGE The global military is a major driver of climate change. At UN level, it is exempt from reporting its carbon emissions despite some countries’ militaries being among the largest consumers of fossil fuels in the world. It is a scandal that needs exposing. Runaway global military spending fuels this state of affairs and impedes development in myriad ways: as a matter of urgency it must be put centre-stage as an international development, environment and human security concern. All current Green New Deal economic thinking (in the UK, Europe, the USA and elsewhere) must take account of the links between these closely linked issues: military spending and climate change. THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS: BAE Systems, Corporate Social Responsibility and war, insecurity and climate change is one of Tipping Point North South’s Five Percent Proposal series of reports and briefings that offer a framework and a formula for progressively converting military spending into funding for development, strengthening human security, and averting climate catastrophe. This briefing is also pertinent to Tipping Point North South’s Green New Deal Plus, designed to complement all current variations of Green New Deal economic proposals. (See Context) The Five Percent Proposal project is funded by Polden-Puckham Charitable Foundation and is a project of Tipping Point North South. • 1 Anti-Apartheid, Anti-Capitalism, and Anti-Imperialism: Liberation In
Anti-Apartheid, Anti-Capitalism, and Anti-Imperialism: Liberation in South Africa? The first Mandela was Jesus Christ. The Second was Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. The third Nelson Mandela are the poor people of the world. (S’bu Zikode, a leader of Abahlali baseMjondolo, the South African shack dwellers movement, quoted in Gibson 2006: 12) Ness, Immanuel and Cope, Zac (editors) The Palgrave Encyclopedia of Imperialism and Anti- Imperialism New York: Palgrave Macmillan Introduction On 16 August 2012, heavily armed South African police ambushed and hunted down striking mine workers. They killed 34 miners, wounded another 78 and then arrested a further 177 strikers, incredibly charging them with murder. The miners worked at Marikana platinum mine owned by British company Lonmin, and were on strike for a living wage (Alexander et al. 2012). A tough hand had been called for by Cyril Ramaphosa, once a leader of the miners union, but now a multi- millionaire and a Lonmin shareholder. The Marikana Massacre was a turning point, demonstrating beyond reasonable doubt that the ANC Government sides with big business against the workers. Little over a year later, on 5 December 2013, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, the personification of dignified resistance to apartheid, and his country’s first democratically elected president, died aged 94 years. The world’s media recalled Mandela’s role in leading the ANC liberation struggle, his 27 years in prison, and dwelt at length on the generosity of his spirit in the reconciliation with his former oppressors. Honouring a great man whom they had spent decades fighting was not simple hypocrisy; the international bourgeoisie let out a detectable collective sigh of relief that matters had not turned out worse.
