History of Wrestling Wrestling is one of the oldest forms of sport known to man. Wrestling was known among the ancient civilizations of Japan, China, India, Babylon, Persia, Egypt and others. Homer wrote the first description of wrestling in the Iliad, in 850 BC. Wrestling was established as a combative form of exercise in ancient Greece and Rome, eventually becoming part of the Olympic Games in 708 BC. In the Middle Ages, King Francis I of France accepted a challenge to wrestle King Henry VIII of England, and won. Wrestling has progressed through the years as a popular sport in many countries. As Canada has hockey as a major sport, the major sport of India, Iran, Mongolia and Russia is wrestling. Wrestling has shown tremendous growth in Canada and is similarly exhibiting its strength in the international arenas. -
