Data brought together in this edition is drawn only from Stats SA's data sources. Stats SA data are mainly published as statistical releases and reports. Statistical releases reflect statistics on time periods immediately prior to release dates. A first level of time series data are published in Stats SA's quarterly Bulletin of Statistics. The Bulletin of Statistics also provides annual figures for the two years prior to the current year as well as monthly and/or quarterly figures for the second of these two years and monthly figures, if available, for the current year, immediately prior to publication date. A second level, longer time series data are published in South African Statistics. We have updated figures for the 2005 period and data for the period that had not been released by end of August 2006 has not been incorporated in 2006 edition. Where 2005 figures were not available, the most recent data is provided. I wish to thank all users and organisations as well as government departments who are always willing to collaborate with us. Pali Lehohla Statistician-General ii Extract from the Report of the Census Subcommittee to the South African Statistics Council on Census 2001 Preliminary investigations indicate that the 2001 census probably resulted in: •• An underestimate of the number of children below age five;¹ • an overestimate of the number of teenagers aged between 10 and 20; • an underestimate of the number of men relative to the number of women;¹ • an underestimate of the number in the white population; • higher than expected numbers aged 80 and older, in the African population; • an underestimate of the number of foreign-born, since some identified themselves incorrectly as being South African-born; • age misstatement in the range 60-74; • an overestimate of the extent of unemployment; • an underestimate of those who were employed for only a few hours per week; • an underestimate of household income; and • an overestimate the number of paternal orphans and the number of fathers missing from the household. In addition: • Scanning problems caused some births to be recorded in the wrong province. The number of cases is relatively small and should not lead to too much distortion for most purposes for which these data are used; however, it does produce obviously erroneous results when one tries to estimate the extent of inter-provincial migration of those born since the previous census. • The fertility data (numbers of children ever born, children surviving) are problematic. For further details of these investigations see the full report of the Census Subcommittee. Tables comparing Census data For Census 2001, imputation was used to allocate values for unavailable, unknown, incorrect or inconsistent responses, to other categories. 'Undetermined' values were used for only a few variables in a few cases (such as industry and occupation). For Census '96, all such values were grouped as 'Other' or 'Unspecified'. ¹ This is a common feature of censuses, particularly in developing countries. iii abbreviations and symbols Abbreviations used South Africa; former and current provinces SA - South Africa EC - Eastern Cape MP - Mpumalanga C - Cape FS - Free State NC - Northern Cape N - Natal GP - Gauteng NW - North West OFS - Orange Free State KZN - KwaZulu-Natal WC - Western Cape T - Transvaal LP - Limpopo (previously known as Northern Province) Units of measurements mm - millimetre g - gram c - cent(s) kg - kilogram cm - centimetre t - ton (1 000kg) m - metre kW - kilowatt km - kilometre MW - megawatt ha - hectare Gwh - gigawatt hour ml - millilitre kWh - kilowatt hour m2 - square metre Mwh - megawatt hour m3 - cubic metre General (in alphabetical order) col. - column CPD - Corporation for Public Deposits e.g. - for example Eskom - Electricity Supply Commission F - female fig. - figure FM - frequency modulation f.o.b. - free on board f.o.r. - free on rail GDP - Gross Domestic Product i.e. - that is incl. - including IMF - International Monetary Fund ISIC - International Standard Industrial Classification M - male NAAMSA - National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa N - number (agricultural tables) n.e.c. - not elsewhere classified n.e.s. - not elsewhere specified n.i.e. - not included elsewhere No. - number O - public ownership P - private ownershiph PES - post-enumeration survey PIC - Public Investment Commissioner pkt. - packet PMG - Paymaster-General R/D - refer to drawer SADC - South African Development Community iv SITC - Standard International Trade Classification SDR - Special drawing rights T - total TB - Tuberculosis UK - United Kingdom UN - United Nations USA - United States of America w.e.f. - with effect from Symbols used .. = Data not available 0 or 0,0 = More than nothing but less than half the final digit shown A blank space = Data not yet available - = Nil or not applicable _____ = A line drawn under a column of figures, indicates an interruption in the comparability of the series - = A minus sign before a figure, denotes ‘less than’; -15 means less than 15 + = A plus sign after a figure, denotes ‘ and over’; 50+ means 50 and over a = As a result of accountably low numbers of recorded births during January and February, the related rates as well as the natural increase for 1997, were calculated on an adjusted number of births and are indicated with an ‘a’ * = Revised since previous edition(s) Limpopo is the new name for the province previously known as Northern Province, and the capital city of Limpopo is now Polokwane (previously Pietersburg). The record was however incomplete and the matter was referred back to the court a quo for the 2 record to be reconstructed in accordance with the guidelines as laid down in S v Leslie1 and S v Zondi.2 [2] The matter returned to the high court on 19 August 2020 for hearing, however, the record was in a shoddy state and to make the matter worse, the order of Madondo DJP issued on 3 June 2020 was simply ignored. After a search through the papers attached to the record, an email was discovered purporting to be from the presiding regional magistrate. It states the following: ‘Please tell the parties that after perusing the court record I found that Appellant’s evidence is complete (sic) from pages 123-131 and not page 73. On page 73 no evidence is missing as the whole record starts at line 5.

  • The Vaal River Inquiry Provisional Report
Final Report of the Gauteng Provincial Inquiry Into the Sewage Problem of the Vaal River 17 February 2021 The Vaal Report Executive Summary The South African Human Rights Commission (‘the Commission’) had been alerted to online and print media reports, published during July and August 2018, reporting that raw sewage, from the Emfuleni Local Municipality (‘the Municipality’)’s Rietspruit Waste Water Care and Management Works situated in Vanderbijlpark, the Leewkuil Waste Water Care and Management Works situated in Vereeniging and other areas within the Municipality, had for weeks and months been leaking into and polluting the Vaal River and the Rietspruit. In addition to the raw sewage polluting major and essential bodies of water, the media reports stated, amongst other things, that: the main sewers in Vanderbijlpark were blocked and that raw sewerage was flowing into people’s yards and properties. In September 2018, in order to test the veracity of the media reports, the Commission’s Gauteng Provincial Office conducted an inspection-in-loco at certain sites within the Emfuleni Municipality, and observed: raw sewage flowing in a small stream that cut across the Emfuleni Golf Estate; two burst sewerage pipes on the banks of the Rietspruit that runs through the Emfuleni Municipal area; defective bio-filters at the Rietspruit Waste Water Treatment Works; a clogged sewerage manhole at the Sharpeville Cemetery and children swimming in, and consuming, polluted waters in the area of a school. Having established a prima facie violation of human rights in the Emfuleni Municipality, regarding the flowing of raw, untreated sewage flowing in the streets, homes, graveyards and also flowing into the Vaal River, the Dam, the Barrage and the Rietspruit (referred to collectively as ‘the Vaal’), and acting within its legislative mandate, the Commission established an Inquiry.
