Book of Abstracts In Sickness and in Health 5th International Conference / 5ième conférence internationale From the Margins: Radical Thoughts for Health Practices and Research 18-20/07/2013 Hyatt Regency, Montreal, Canada Program and Abstracts / Programme et résumés 1 Dear colleagues It is with the greatest pleasure that the organizing committee of the 5th In Sickness and in Health International Conference welcomes you this year to Montreal. The conference program is sure to please all those who have chosen to participate either as speakers or attendees. This year's program includes papers that were carefully selected to fit the broader theme of critical, even radical, thinking regarding health practice and research. The choice of this year's theme is not arbitrary. Indeed, this year's co-chairs, professors Dave Holmes and Amélie Perron, have opted for a return to critical work inspired by postmodern thinkers of all persuasions who have characterized the first In Sickness and in Health conference. If the Montreal conference proudly returns to these roots, it is also a continuation of an initiative driven by marginal intellectuals who were and still are interested in pressing and often provoking critical questions in the field of health. Les communications incluses au programme ont été sélectionnées avec minutie afin de s’aligner avec la thématique de la conférence orientée vers la pensée critique, voire radicale, en lien avec la pratique clinique et la recherche en santé. Le choix de cette thématique n’est pas le fruit du hasard. En effet, les co-présidents de cette édition, les professeurs Dave Holmes et Amélie Perron, voulaient un retour à des présentations critiques inspirées par les travaux de penseurs postmodernes de toutes allégeances qui ont caractérisé la première édition de In Sickness and in Health. Issues of violence are well documented in nursing. To address this, a better understanding of the culture of nursing academia is required. Problems of incivility are reported between students, between students and faculty, and between faculty and faculty. The purpose of this study is to increase understanding of faculty to faculty violence in nursing academia. Guided by a theoretical framework incorporating the perspectives of Mason and Foucault and specifically on the concepts of violence, power, knowledge, difference and resistance, this study focuses on aspects of the social and cultural work environment, and organizational policies and procedures influencing workplace violence between faculty members. Using principles from critical ethnography, the research was conducted within three schools of nursing at universities in eastern Canada. Data collection included 29 semi-structured interviews with nursing faculty, key informants (including representation from management, human resources, support staff and human rights office) and mute document review. Three major themes emerged: the academic apparatus, experiencing academia, and coping mechanisms. Nursing academic culture is divergent, exhibiting fierce competitiveness and elitism, intertwined with pockets of support and resilience. Faculty identified diverse personal and professional strategies employed to withstand the challenges. Need for change was expressed by some faculty and managers. These findings may inform the efforts of faculty and management seeking transformation to a less competitive and elitist culture.

Born from this same historical conjuncture, The New York State Public Health Manual: A Guide for Attorneys, Judges, and Public Health Professionals, published in 2011, outlines the powers of the state of New York during a time of catastrophe; i.e. plague, outbreak, natural disaster. This particular legal guide demonstrates a current manifestation of biopower and the affective potential States hope to capture and control that emanate from the collision and interaction of bodies. States harness affect through various ways, and in this particular study, through a text that mobilizes fear and the ever-present potential of a threat, ultimately justifying draconian social measures in the name of “public safety”. Written texts provide a rich context in which to critique and better situate State policies within larger frameworks of discipline and control.

It investigated how mentally ill adults (both mentally ill patients and mental health nurses) perceive mental illness and how they respond to stigmatization on a daily basis. Given the current state of knowledge with regards to the meaning and process of stigma and mental illness among adults in Indonesia, a constructivist grounded theory was considered to be the method of choice for this study. We recruited 15 nurses and 15 patients to participate in the study; all from a psychiatric hospital in Indonesia. Data collection methods involved semi-structured interviews with the 30 participants as well as mute evidence, field notes and memos. Data analysis occurred over a period of six months. In keeping with the basic principles of a grounded theory method (Charmaz, 2006) as well as Paillé’s (1994) structure for data analysis which are congruent with Charmaz’s principles and include stages of codification, categorization, linking categories, integration, conceptualization, and theorization, 5 discrete but interrelated categories were produced: 1) treatment of mental illness; 2) violence; 3) fear; 4) constructing cursed citizens; and 5) stigmatization.

  • The Politics of Self-Branding, Transgression
    Abstract Persons ‘branded’ as dangerous to the public’s health often try to hide their status (as smokers, as HIV positive, etc). Yet, a small but growing subgroup has re-appropriated stigma symbols and voluntarily branded themselves as ‘marked’ individuals, rebellious, transgressive and refusing to be shamed by their status.3 In this article we examine voluntary branding as acts of resistance, paying particular attention to bodily practices that disrupt dominant aesthetic and moral/political sensibilities. We draw on our research and observations in the realms of smoking and bareback sex to illustrate and address broader issues of branding the self, aesthetics and the politics of resistance, surveillance, and transgression. Drawing on the work of Goffman, Bourdieu and Foucault, we examine the interpenetration of class, physical and social capital, and unequal social relations. While these works are often used to celebrate resistance, we argue, following Fiske, that it should not be romanticized as inherently liberating.     CJNR 2008,Vol. 40 No 3, 14 4 –159 Résumé Recherches concernant les populations marginalisées : les préoccupations d’ordre éthique liées à l’ethnographie Patrick O’Byrne et Dave Holmes L’augmentation des taux de maladies transmissibles sexuellement (MTS) observée récemment chez les personnes de sexe masculin ayant des relations sexuelles avec des personnes de même sexe et l’augmentation simultanée de l’utilisation du crystal meth dans les fêtes des circuits gay mettent en évidence le besoin croissant de recherches sur les pratiques de loisirs faisant intervenir le sexe et les drogues. En fait, alors qu’il existe des preuves épidémiologiques corrélant ces pratiques, les taux de MTS n’ont pas diminué. Les auteurs fournissent un cadre éthique destiné à la recherche qualitative, qui « déborde du cadre » des méthodes épidémiologiques classiques de recherche en santé en matière de sexualité. À ce jour, la majeure partie des recherches sur les fêtes des circuits gay ont été menées selon des méthodes d’enquête; toutefois, aucun ouvrage n’aborde les préoccupations d’ordre éthique qui sont liées à l’observation naturaliste visant à mieux cerner l’environnement sexualisé des fêtes des circuits gay. Cette étude a permis d’établir que même si les risques éthiques sont inhérents, les avantages pour la société et pour le groupe étudié l’emportent largement sur ces risques. As such, we assert that the evidence-based movement in health sciences constitutes a good example of microfascism at play in the contemporary scientific arena. Objective The philosophical work of Deleuze and Guattari proves to be useful in showing how health sciences are colonised (territorialised) by an all-encompassing scientific research paradigm – that of post-positivism – but also and foremost in showing the process by which a dominant ideology comes to exclude alternative forms of knowledge, therefore acting as a fascist structure.
