Charger Connection Page 6 Spanish Classes' Trip to Puerto Rico A group consisting of Spanish students and parents traveled to Puerto Rico during the IWA mini break. Their itinerary was a busy one, visiting three towns (Rio Grande, Fajardo, Luquillo) and two cities (San Juan, Ponce) in five days. This is the second time that Sra. Rodríguez and Sra. Castillo chaperoned a group to this beautiful island. After landing in San Juan, they quickly got acquainted with Puerto Rico’s historic capital city while on a bus tour around the city, stopping for a few minutes at the port of San Juan. The next day, the group headed to Old San Juan where they visited El Morro Fortress, Plaza San José, Plaza de Colón, La Fortaleza (the Governor's mansion), Capilla del Cristo, the San Juan Cathedral, and other historical and touristic places. They started their third day at El Yunque in Rio Grande, the only tropical rain forest in the U.S. Forest Service, where some of them waded at the La Mina Waterfall. They also stopped at La Coca Waterfall for a photo opportunity, and climbed the Yokahu Observation Tower for a panoramic view of the rainforest. The next stop was Los Kioskos de Luquillo for some authentic Puerto Rican food and frituras (fritters/fried food). Then, the group headed to Luquillo Beach with its beautiful turquoise and calm waters. After dinner, they went to the Bioluminescent Bay in Fajardo for a kayak trip through the mangroves in the dark and then into the lagoon to experience this natural phenomenon. The next day they traveled to Ponce, Puerto Rico’s second largest city. Their first stop was El Vigia, where they enjoyed a beautiful panoramic view of the city, strolled through the Japanese Garden, and visited the Serralles Castle. They continued to Ponce, to Plaza Las Delicias, and its beautiful fountain. There, they visited El Parque de Bombas, the first fire station on the island, now a museum. After lunch, they stepped back in time at Tibes Indigenous Ceremonial Park. They ended the day with a visit to the Ponce Museum of Art and La Guancha (Ponce’s boardwalk overlooking the Caribbean Sea). On the last day, Sra. Castillo took some of the members of the group to watch the sunrise, before heading back to Virginia. It was a hectic trip, but a great experience for all.
