In former years the writer took very little interest in fam i ly ’ history : bu t when he began to gather data for h is wife s admi ssion m i hi s to membership in the Daughters of the A er can Revolution , fami ly pride was aroused ; and he has since persisted in an en is r atifica d eavor to trace the hi story of h is people . It a further g tion to feel that some success has attended these efforts . This fragmentary sketch has cost some time and expense ; yet it has i been a diversion from the dut es of the pastorate , which every m i i nister needs , at the same t me it has been a labor of loyalty and love . It mi ght appear from the pages of this booklet that our people ai h u r ch were m nly of the Episcopal C , but the record does not jus if E isco t . y such a conclusion In the days of the Colonies , when the p on pal Church was the first the ground , our people with many oth niz im ers , at once recog ed the value and portance of the Sanctuary, ! and so naturally threw their in uence , and gave their support in in mi ma taining the Altar of Jehovah regardless of creed . In the year 1 there were eight ni sters b earing the name of Price , in the Southern Presbyterian Church . So far as one is able to judge the family has been by temperament and thought most naturally inclined to the doctrines of the Presby l i terian faith and po ty . To the family this booklet will no doubt occupy a uniq ue p o sition from the fact that several of the most prominent characters mentioned were Generals in contending armies , during the war between the States : Generals Samuel Woodson Price of Kentucky with William Bedford Royall of Missouri for the Union Cause ;

and General Sterling Price with his sons , General Edwin W . Price i and Colonel Celsus Pr ce , all of Missouri , in the Confederate Army . Certain members of the family who have devoted much care ful study to the subj ect have generously lent their aid and sup

Virgini a . ) From these authorities it appears that the following conclu sions can b e drawn and beyond controversy 1 — I t seems certain that the John Price of Henrico County ’ hi mentioned in Burke s story , was the same who lived on the “ ” Neck of Land in Charles City County , which was near to

Jamestown . 2— i That John Price , with Mary , his first wife and Will am , 1 620 ’ their son, came over in . It is presumed that John Price s home was destroyed with many others at the time of the James 1 622 I t n town Massacre , May . seems that Mary was slai at this m time or she did not live long after coming to A erica . William , 1 623 the son, is found in , at College Land , near Jamestown , and i there raised a fam ly . 3 — Ann Mathewes , a young girl of about seventeen win 1 620 ters , came over in the ship Francis Bonaventure in August , . (There seems to b e some reason for doubting that she was the i daughter of Capt . Samuel Mathewes s nce the authorities agree ’ i 1 620 Wh l H otten s that she arrived on the Bonaventure dur ng , i e

List gives the date of Capt . Samuel Mathewes as John could not resist her gracious manner, her sterling q ualities and i n womanly character, so soon found h mself pledgi g his heart and n hand , which were accepted by the you g girl of tender years , and 1 624 40 in in the Muster of Charles City we find John Price , aged , An n 21 i 3 and , his wife , aged , w th Mary, their daughter , aged months . 4 — As John Price owned land at this early date near the ” di Falls of James River, it seems b eyond spute that he was the ni i proge tor of the Henrico fam ly of Prices . John Price lived on the “ Neck of Land in Charles City hi County, w ch was near to Jamestown , and later, near the ” l i Falls of James River . Both he and his son Wi l am , who l lived at Co lege Land , were planters , home builders and as in on l i n sisted the founding of a Colony , but it is y their muster i that we find them in serv ce . Al l those coloni sts not indentured servants and not of the i u il servant class , were mustered nto service to help b d the i Emp re , and of these Gentlemen Freeholders , John Price was one . i It is therefore a source of grat fication , as well as satisfaction in to know that our ancestors left their native land , the Old World an d in set sail for the New World , to participate the pleasures , as well as the burdens of the shareholders of the Virginia Company

the germ of Am erican growth and greatness . This began just thirteen years after Jamestown became a perman ent settle i ment , six years after the found ng of New Amsterdam and before f ’ the landing O the Pilgrim Fathers . MA T T H E W E S1 PRICE .

He opposed secession , but when war was declared between the n ni States , and Virgi ia withdrew from the U on , he volunteered for service in the defense of his State , home and property ; went to h m Ric ond , and was rej ected on account of not being able physi

Sterling Price married Martha Head in Randolph County , 1 4 h 1 833 t . Missouri , on the day of May, Martha Head was the daughter of Captain John Head and Nancy Burton , who emi 1 830 n grated to Missouri in from Orange County Virgi ia . Sterling Price was thirty- one years old when he took his seat 1 840 in the Eleventh General Assembly of Missouri in , and was unanim ously elected Speaker of the House ; in 1 842 he was r e elected to both positions , thereby showing his great popularity , r as well as his wisdom , judgment , and tact , in uling a legislative body . In 1 844 he was elected to the Uni ted States Congress ; when m the Mexican War broke out he resigned , and was com issioned by President Polk to raise and command a regiment of Missou rians (Second Missouri Mounted Volunteers) , and before the war fli closed he rose to the rank of Brigadier General . In this con ct his ability to successfully handle troops was shown , and the results wei e not only appreciated by the men on the field of action , but also by the authorities i n Washington . In 1 8 52 G en ei al Sterling Price was elected Governor of Mis a s — D em oci h souri an anti Benton at , defeating the W ig candidate . of Mr . Winston , who was a grandson Patrick Henry . During his term of office he urged the legislature to pass a ’ law increasing the Governor s salary , thereby intending to benefit in his successors . The l egislature , however, provided for the i crease to begin at once , but Governor Sterl ng Price refused and w i hi s ould not accept the add tional salary during term of office .

On the expiration of his term as Governor, he was appointed 61 m i c n 1 8 . State Bank Com ssioner , whi h position he held u til May ,

He was then appointed by the Governor , Major General of the

M. issouri State Guards The true position of General Sterli ng Price cannot be clearly understood without knowing that in 1 8 60 he was a decided Uni on man , and supported Stephen A . Douglas for President . He was a memb er of the convention which declared that Missouri would 75 1 5 not secede , was made chairman , the vote b eing for Price to for Nathaniel W . Watkins , a half brother of Henry Clay .

General Price soon found himself in the Confederate army , 1 8 62 ni m i or . and was com ssioned Maj General in March , He orga zed for his men and trained them service on Cowskin Prairie , where ”

r i . prai e grass , lean beef, and water were in abundance He had n or mi neither arms litary stores of any kind , and no money to buy ” them , if any had b een for sale , vet he soon had men armed and ready for battle . Mu l l h ! Price and cC oc put to ight Lyon and Sigel at Spring “ ” or i field , Bloody H ll , and not long afterwards he alone captured “ in l 3 Lexington an a most bloodless victory, which consisted of , 500 5 750 prisoners , pieces of artillery , stands of arms , horses , m m about worth of co issary stores , and a large amount of i other property . He also obta ned the restoration of in money which had been taken from the bank , and recovered the great seal of the State and the public records , which were said to di ” have been taken from their proper custo an . in in 1 864 Carr , in mention g the raid led by Price September, , “ says : Entering the southeastern portion of the State at the head i of men , this gallant officer came w thin forty miles of Saint f Louis , passed in sight of Jef erson City , and moved up the Mis i c sour , captured Lexington and Independen e . In the course of

“ mi - the raid he marched les , fought forty three battles and m i ” skir shes . The men with General Price and in the Confederate army ” from Missouri are said to comprise the whole State en masse ; though there were about four in the Union army for every one in the Confederate ranks . i i General Sterling Pr ce , fam liarly known as Old Pap to the m “ men under his com and, is a name to conjure with in Missouri i h im and the Southwest . His sold ers loved with a true and loyal h im devotion . He permitted them to get close to , and he in turn i di was one of them ; without stand ng aloof, he maintained the g n it i H is y of his position , possess ng the esteem and respect of all . th e magnetism was truly wonderful , and resources with which he h im i was endowed made a master of almost any situation , noth ng i n strange therefore that he succeeded being a leader among men . Hi s i greatness and gen us , which was exhibited in so many ways i i il h im preced ng and dur ng the Civ War, so endeared to the people n of the Southwest that with the exception of Lee and Jackso , no man among all the cherished heroes is remembered with more ardent and sincere affection . l It is not my purpose , nor is this the p ace for any extended

My Dear Sir z— This is the first opportunity I have had to acknowledge your letter of October 30. a n d There is a hamlet in the northern part of Derbyshire , which is called Abney has been called such for hundreds of years ; but no member of the Abney family now
