Exteriormente, estava toda a gente com o mesmo aspeto dos últimos trinta anos. Por dentro, era outra his- tória. O Thurston deu duas palmadas no ombro do Mark Ibold, o nosso baixista, e atravessou o palco energicamente, seguido pelo Lee Ranaldo, o nosso guitarrista e, finalmente, pelo Steve Shelley, o nosso baterista. O gesto pareceu-me tão falso, tão infantil, tão fantasio- so. O Thurston conhecia muita gente socialmente, mas não falava de assuntos pessoais com os poucos amigos homens que tinha, nem era, sequer, o tipo de pessoa de dar pancadinhas no ombro. Era um gesto que transmitia claramente a mensagem: Voltei. Estou livre. Estou a solo. Eu fui a última pessoa a entrar em palco, garantindo alguma dis- tância entre nós. Sentia-me exausta e alerta. O Steve ocupou a sua posição atrás da bateria, como um pai a sentar-se por trás de uma se- cretária. Nós armámo-nos com os nossos instrumentos como um ba- talhão, um exército a desejar que o bombardeamento terminasse. Chovia com força, num manto oblíquo de chuva. A chuva da América do Sul é exatamente igual à chuva de outro sítio qualquer e provoca a mesma sensação. Costuma dizer-se que quando um casamento termina, as pe- quenas coisas que até aí não se notavam se tornam monstros impos- síveis de ignorar. Na última semana, sempre que o Thurston estava por perto, isso tinha sido completamente verdadeiro para mim. 11 É possível que ele sentisse o mesmo ou, então, talvez tivesse a cabeça noutro sítio. Na verdade, não me interessava. Fora do palco, via-o constantemente a enviar mensagens de telemóvel e a andar à nossa volta como um miúdo sobre-excitado e culpado. Depois de trinta anos, era o último concerto dos Sonic Youth. O SWU Music and Arts Festival estava a decorrer em Itu, mesmo ao lado de São Paulo, no Brasil, a oito mil quilómetros da nossa casa em Nova Inglaterra. Era um evento de três dias, transmitido na televisão latino-americana e em streaming, com patrocínios de grandes corpora- ções como a Coca-Cola e a Heineken. Os cabeças de cartaz eram Faith No More, Kanye West, Black Eyed Peas, Peter Gabriel, Stone Temple Pilots, Snoop Dog, Soundgarden — bandas e músicos desse género. Éramos, muito provavelmente, a banda mais pequena no car- taz. Era um sítio estranho para as coisas terminarem. Ao longo de tantos anos, tínhamos tocado em muitos festivais de rock. Como banda, encarávamos isso como um mal necessário, apesar de, por não se fazer soundcheck antes de tocar, o sentimento de falta de rede acabar por torná-los um bocado emocionantes. Tocar num festival significava camarins em atrelados, tendas, material técnico e cabos por toda a parte, WC portáteis a cheirarem mal e, ocasional- mente, encontrar músicos de quem se gosta, pessoal ou profissional- mente, mas com quem nunca se consegue conversar ou passar algum tempo. O equipamento pode estragar-se, os atrasos acontecem, o tempo é imprevisível. Por vezes, é impossível ouvir os monitores e a única coisa que resta é continuar a tocar e tentar fazer com que a mú- sica alcance o mar de pessoas. Um festival é também sinónimo de alinhamentos mais curtos. Naquela noite, íamos terminar tudo com setenta minutos de adrenali- na, exatamente como tínhamos feito nos últimos dias em festivais no Peru, Uruguai, em Buenos Aires e no Chile. A única diferença em relação às digressões e festivais anteriores era o facto de eu e o Thurston não nos falarmos. Durante toda a se- mana devemos ter trocado, provavelmente, não mais do que quinze palavras. Após vinte e sete anos de casamento, as coisas tinham co- lapsado entre nós. Pedira-lhe, em agosto, que saísse da nossa casa, no Massachusetts, coisa que ele fez. Vivia, naquele momento, num 12 apartamento alugado a um ou dois quilómetros, vendo-se obrigado a apanhar transportes para ir e voltar de Nova Iorque. O casal que era visto por toda a gente como algo precioso, nor- mal e eternamente intacto, o casal que dera esperança a jovens músi- cos, fazendo-os acreditar que era possível uma relação sobreviver ao mundo louco do rock’n’roll, era agora mais um lugar-comum das rela- ções falhadas: um homem com uma crise de meia-idade, outra mu- lher, uma vida dupla. O Thurston simulou um ar de espanto quando o técnico lhe passou a guitarra para as mãos. Com cinquenta e três anos, ainda era o miúdo magricelas e desgrenhado do Connecticut que encontrei pe- la primeira vez numa discoteca da baixa nova-iorquina, tinha ele vin- te e dois anos e eu vinte e sete. Disse-me que tinha gostado dos meus óculos escuros de lentes duplas. Parecia um miúdo conservado num diorama, com os seus jeans, os seus Pumas old-school e a camisa branca desfraldada, um rapaz de dezassete anos que não queria ser visto na rua com a mãe — ou com outra mulher qualquer, na verdade. Tinha os lábios como os do Mick Jagger, braços e pernas compridas que não sabia onde meter, e a calma cuidadosa que se vê nos homens al- tos que não querem sobrepor-se às outras pessoas com a sua altura. O seu longo cabelo castanho escondia-lhe o rosto e ele parecia gostar que assim fosse. Parecia que tinha voltado atrás no tempo durante essa semana, apagando quase trinta anos de vida em conjunto. Para ele, «a nossa vida» passara a ser «a minha vida». Tinha voltado a ser um adolescen- te perdido em fantasias, e o espetáculo exagerado de rockstar que ele estava a montar em palco começava a irritar-me. Os Sonic Youth foram sempre uma democracia, ainda assim, cada um tinha o seu papel. Ocupei o meu lugar no centro do palco. Não era assim no início e não sei exatamente quando mudou. Era uma coreografia com já vinte anos, vinda da altura em que os Sonic Youth assinaram o primeiro contrato com a Geffen Records. Foi aí que aprendemos que sim, para as editoras musicais de peso, a música interessa — mas, no final, tudo se resume muito à aparência da rapa- riga. A rapariga serve de âncora no palco, atraindo o olhar masculino, e, dependendo da pessoa que é, lançando o seu olhar de volta para o público. 13 Uma vez que a nossa música pode ser estranha e dissonante, terem-me no centro do palco ajuda muito a vender a banda. Olha, é uma rapariga, está a usar um vestido, e está com aqueles gajos, por isso deve to- car bem. Mas esse nunca foi o modo como atuámos enquanto banda indie, de modo que tenho sempre cuidado para não ficar demasiado à frente. Foi-me quase impossível manter a compostura durante a nossa primeira canção, Brave Men Run. A determinada altura, parecia que a minha voz estava a raspar contra o seu próprio fundo e que o pró- prio fundo acabaria por colapsar de repente.

INTRO: what I am about to tell you BODY: TELL IT. END: summarize what I just told you. The invisible threads that form identity politics are especially messy today. Through the lens of a transnational/intersectional/feminist sensibility, my thesis paper and body of work weaves influences from both visual and music culture. Socio-political agency is explored through reconfiguration. Both thesis and artwork are informed by the organizational principles of collage logic - specifically through the contrast in texture and rhythm, and employing the notion of the monster as a harmony of incongruence.
