IDENTITY CONSTRUCTION of CHINESE IMMIGRANTS Exploring the Proc IDENTITY CONSTRUCTION OF CHINESE IMMIGRANTS 1 Running head: IDENTITY CONSTRUCTION OF CHINESE IMMIGRANTS Exploring the Processes of Identity Construction among Chinese Immigrant Parents and Young Adults in Montreal Lingwei Qian Department of Integrated Studies in Education McGill University July, 2015 A thesis submitted to McGill University in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Master of Arts in Education and Society © Lingwei Qian 2015 IDENTITY CONSTRUCTION OF CHINESE IMMIGRANTS 2 Abstract This qualitative inquiry describes and analyzes the contrasts and interrelationships among the pathways through which Chinese immigrant parents and immigrant young adults construct their identities in a context of Quebec’s Interculturalism Policy. My theoretical foundation is shaped by the works of Hall (1990, 1996), Taylor (1994), and Bhabha (1996). In order to understand the lived experiences of the Chinese immigrants from their perspectives, I conducted 15 in-depth, face-to-face individual interviews with both the parents and young adults from five Chinese immigrant families living in Montreal. This inquiry aims to contribute to a more nuanced understanding of the dynamics and complexity of identity construction. Results from the interviews reveal the multiple, fluid, and malleable nature of identity. Through their individualized definitions of the meanings of “being Chinese” and “being Canadian,” participants indicate the coexistence of their Chinese and Canadian identities. They demonstrate that their identities are constructed and reconstructed through the dialectical interplay among self, others, and the socio- cultural contexts that they negotiate. The multiple social identifications that participants claim are closely intertwined with each other during the process of their identity constructions. This inquiry has implications for policymakers and educators who can take an active role in the fostering of hybrid identities, which serve to challenge and problematize the hegemonic definition of a “Chinese-Canadian” identity. Hybrid identities open up the possibility of dismantling old cultural boundaries, and reinventing new shared cultural spaces, which are of great significance in today’s increasingly globalized world. IDENTITY CONSTRUCTION OF CHINESE IMMIGRANTS 3 Résumé Dans un contexte d’interculturalisme québécois, cette recherche qualitative décrit et analyse les moyens à travers lesquelles parents et jeunes adultes immigrants chinois développent leur identité. Les fondements théoriques de cet ouvrage reposent sur les travaux de Hall (1990, 1996), Taylor (1994) et Bhabha (1996). Quinze entretiens individuels en profondeur ont été conduits auprès de parents et jeunes adultes au sein de cinq familles d’immigrants chinois vivantes à Montréal. Cette méthode a été utilisée afin de comprendre le vécu des sujets à partir de leurs expériences. Cette recherche tente de contribuer à une compréhension plus nuancée de la dynamique et de la complexité de la construction identitaire. Les résultats obtenus grâce aux entretiens révèlent le caractère pluriel, fluide et malléable de l’identité. De plus, à travers leurs propres définitions de ce que signifie « être chinois » et « être canadien », les participants ont démontré la coexistence de leur identité chinoise et canadienne. Ainsi, ces derniers démontrent que l’identité est construite et reconstruite par le biais d’interactions entre le soi, l’autre, et le contexte socioculturel qu’ils frayent. De plus, durant le processus de construction identitaire, les différentes identités sociales des participants se trouvent à être étroitement liées l’une avec l’autre. Finalement, cette étude a un impact sur les législateurs et éducateurs pouvant promouvoir des identités hybrides, qui, contestent et problématisent la définition hégémonique d’une identité « chinoise-canadienne ». Ce concept d’identité hybride ouvre la voie à une réévaluation des anciennes théories concernant la limite des frontières culturelles ainsi qu’à une réinvention d’espaces culturelles partagées, ce qui est d’autant plus important en raison de la mondialisation croissante. Benedict, Ph.D. ABSTRACT This dissertation is the first study to examine the Irish and Chinese interethnic and interracial dynamic in the United States and the British Empire in Australia and Canada during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Utilizing comparative and transnational perspectives and drawing on multinational and multilingual archival research including Chinese language sources, “The Global Irish and Chinese” argues that Irish immigrants were at the forefront of anti-Chinese movements in Australia, Canada, and the United States during the second half of the nineteenth century. Their rhetoric and actions gave rise to Chinese immigration restriction legislation and caused major friction in the Qing Empire’s foreign relations with the United States and the British Empire. Moreover, Irish immigrants east and west of the Rocky Mountains and on both sides of the Canada-United States border were central to the formation of a transnational white working-class alliance aimed at restricting the flow of Chinese labor into North America. Looking at the intersections of race, class, ethnicity, and gender, this project reveals a complicated history of relations between the Irish and Chinese in Australia, Canada, and the United States, which began in earnest with the mid-nineteenth century gold rushes in California, New South Wales, Victoria, and British Columbia.

King GEORGE VANCOUVER AND THE CONTEMPLATED SETTLEMENT AT NOOTKA SOUND1 George Vancouver (1757-1798) has been justly celebrated for the exhaustive and authoritative survey he undertook during 1792-1794 of the North West Coast of America, that is, of the intricate coasts and offshore islands of present day Washington, British Columbia and Alaska. This he and his ship’s company achieved overcoming the great privations attendant on operating in a severe climate far beyond the support of friendly ports, and for him personally in deteriorating health from the disease that caused his untimely death less than three years after the completion of his voyage. It should also be acknowledged that Vancouver carried out his survey oppressed by the apprehension that he might be thought to have been blameworthy for failing in the other task he had been assigned, that of receiving back from the Spanish commander at Nootka Sound land and property that had been confiscated from English fur traders in July 1789 and of establishing a formal British presence there to support and promote the fur trade. Proposals to establish a British colony on the North West Coast had been discussed in commercial and official circles in the 1780s, encouraged by the success of the project to colonize Botany Bay and Norfolk Island. During the war crisis with Spain that resulted from the arrest of the English fur traders at Nootka Sound, plans were made for a small party of convicts and marines to be sent from New South Wales to make a subsidiary settlement on the North West Coast: one of the ships to be used for this task was to have been the Discovery, which Vancouver afterwards commanded during his expedition.

    Launch of the North West America By John Meares & Thomas Stothard British maritime fur trader John Meares included this engraving in his narrative entitled, Voyages Made in the Years 1788 and 1789 from China to the North West Coast of America, first published in 1790. The engraving may have been produced in collaboration with the British book illustrator Thomas Stothard. John Meares began his career at sea with the Royal Navy in 1771. After leaving the navy at the rank of lieutenant in 1783, he entered the merchant shipping profession. In the mid-1780s he decided to mount a commercial venture to exploit the maritime fur trade market then developing along the Northwest Coast. Backed by British merchants in India, Meares made his first voyage to the region in 1786-87, spending a difficult winter in present-day Prince William Sound, Alaska. A year later he returned to the Northwest with two ships, the Felice and the Iphigenia. The expedition arrived at Nootka Sound on Vancouver Island in May 1788 and made a base camp at Friendly Cove with the permission of the local Native leader, Chief Maquinna. Meares then ordered the construction of a smaller vessel, the North West America, for use in local trading along the coastal waters. In September 1788, Meares sailed to China in the Felice with his cache of furs while Captain William Douglas remained at Nootka Sound with the Iphigenia for another season of trading.     James Hanna and John Henry Gox: The First Maritime Fur Trader and His Sponsor W. KAYE LAMB and TOMÂS BARTROLI The clocks, watches, jewellery, and mechanical novelties that delighted the mandarins in Canton and Peking in the late eighteenth century have a modest place in the history of the maritime fur trade. For it was these "singsongs," as they were known locally, that brought to China the man who not only sponsored the pioneer expedition of James Hanna to Nootka in 1785 but also was involved in Hanna's second venture and in the better- known voyages of John Meares, Charles Barkley, James Colnett, and others in the crucial years that followed. The man in question was John Henry Cox, son of James Cox, a cele­ brated watchmaker and jeweller of Shoe Lane, London, who had been the major supplier of "singsongs." In 1766, "by order of the East India Com­ pany," James Cox had made two huge and bejewelled clocks of great complexity that the company had presented to the Emperor of China.1 Memory of this transaction may have benefited John Henry when he asked the East India Company for permission to go to Canton. Permission was granted, and he was in China by 1781.
