The Careless Language of Sexual Violence - the Rumpus.Net
10/8/2018 The Careless Language Of Sexual Violence - The Rumpus.net Poetry Book Club Store Menu « Previous post like this Next post like this » The Careless Language of Sexual Violence By Roxane Gay March 10th, 2011 There are crimes and then there are crimes and then there are atrocities. These are, I suppose, matters of scale. I read an article in the New York Times about an eleven-year-old girl who was gang raped by eighteen men in Cleveland, Texas. The levels of horror to this story are many, from the victim’s age to what is known about what happened to her, to the number of attackers, to the public response in that town, to how it is being reported. There is video of the attack too, because this is the future. The unspeakable will be televised. The Times article was entitled, “Vicious Assault Shakes Texas Town,” as if the victim in question was the town itself. James McKinley Jr., the article’s author, focused on how the men’s lives would be changed forever, how the town was being ripped apart, how those poor boys might never be able to return to school. There was discussion of how the eleven-year-old girl, the child, dressed like a twenty-year-old, implying that there is a realm of possibility where a woman can “ask for it” and that it’s somehow understandable that eighteen men would rape a child. There were even questions about the whereabouts of the mother, given, as we all know, that a mother must be with her child at all times or whatever ill may befall the child is clearly the mother’s fault. -

Jason Edward Morgan and Elizabeth Imogene Hardy Webber. Married on May 29, 1995. at the Sacre-Coeur Basilica Church in Paris, France
Background Inspiration I’m not sure now what inspired this story, but it’s definitely up there as one of my best early pieces. There are things I would do differently today, but I’m still really happy with it overall. Yesterdays is really close to my heart. When I started writing it, I had never met anyone who had divorced parents. I’m from a small town and we were mostly lower middle class for the majority of my childhood. People would fight, maybe spend nights at different places, but divorce was too expensive. How could you set up two households when just having one was so difficult to afford? So, I wrote this story without any real experience. About halfway through, I received a message from a reader who told me that this story touched her because it made her think of her own experiences, and I’ve never forgotten that. Background This is an alternate universe in which Elizabeth and Jason are the children of jet-setting wealthy parents who travel the world. They met and married young, then bitterly divorced shortly after the birth of their first daughter. Table of Contents Background Table of Contents Chapter One Chapter Two Chapter Three Chapter Four Chapter Five Chapter Six Chapter Seven Chapter Eight Chapter Nine Chapter Ten Chapter Eleven Chapter Twelve Chapter Thirteen Chapter Fourteen Chapter Fifteen Epilogue Chapter One The first time Elizabeth Webber saw him, she was nineteen and vacationing in Spain with her parents. The only child of wealthy jet-set parents, she’d spent most of her childhood traveling Europe, Asia and South America. -

Someone who has not watched the three soap operas examined for this study might think that soap operas are all alike. Yet this study has demonstrated how different they really are. These soap operas are created by different teams of writers, producers, and editors—different real authors.
