Supporters Rally for Phil Browning Field

Friends and family of the late Phil Browning will urge school officials this football season to name the new high school athletic field after the former head football coach. Supporters want Browning recognized for his many contributions to Fluvanna County. Browning was a Fluvanna educator, athletic director, and winning football and track coach from 1968 to 1984. Proponents are providing a sample letter to garner support. The letter reads in part: “Phil provided leadership and invested a great deal of effort in leading the process of integration in our schools, not only for student-ath- letes, but for the general student population. In addition, he was a pioneer in forming women’s teams during a time when women’s athletics was in its infancy.” 109 Crofton Place Letters of support can be sent to [email protected]. For the second time the staff and children at ABC Preschool and their families have donated much needed items for the cats and dogs at the Fluvanna SPCA. This time, the new shelter director, Chris Roberson, came to accept the gift and brought a friend along to entertain the children. The FSPCA’s goodwill ambassador Daisy, a sweet young adult Beagle mix, greeted the children, wag- ging her tail, licking and nuzzling. The children, quite taken with Daisy, returned the affection by pet- ting her. The staff also enjoyed visiting with Daisy. Daisy is one of many dogs currently at the FSPCA and seeking a home to call her own. The dog and cat food, toys, cat litter, and other items donated by families participating in the drive will benefit all of Daisy’s friends back at the shelter. Roberson thanked the staff and the children who participated in helping the animals. “This is extremely generous of you,” said a grate- ful Roberson. Roberson’s goal is to do more community out- reach. He thinks he and Daisy make a good team — that is unless someone would like to give Daisy a home of her own. To make a donation, contact the Fluvanna SPCA at 591-0123 or visit them at 5239 Union Mills Road in Troy. FSPCA Director, Chris Roberson introduces Daisy to students at ABCPreschool. Photo by Page H. Lake Monticello maintenance staff are working to remove branches and brush that obstruct street signs and sight-lines in the community. They are also removing the branches that hang down and hit the top of trucks and school buses, as well as those that have created safety hazards in the past when pushed to the ground by heavy snow. Over the past week, maintenance crews have worked from the maintenance building on Jefferson Drive to the main gate, covering both sides of the road, as well along one side of the road from the main gate to Riverside gate. The work will take several more weeks to complete. There will likely be one- way traffic in the work zones.
