Founder Daniel Glass says: There's a huge sense of rock 'n' roll about it, irreverence and authenticity, it fits into our list because it's an alternative. He liked our approach, which is very touring. Secondly, it's about how progressive he was online: inclusive of his fans and very liberal with handing out music. Barry Nicholson of NME dubbed it hip-hop album of the year and praised Gambino's focus on being... witty, sincere, honest and sometimes noisy. Steve Lepore of PopMatters found the album undoubtedly one of the best recordings of any genre to come out in 2011 and described it as a juxtaposition of mostly depressing, self-hating rap mixed with some of the most enjoyable post-Graduation music. In his consumer guide to MSN Music, Robert Christgau praised his choral and orchestral music for cinema and stated, It's less true than Culdesac. But it's more satisfying emotionally, because the autobiography reaches deep. Mojo stated: The identity crisis is a themed camp of goats both and goats both through whip-smart intelligence, comic brio and bristling malignant intent. AllMusic editor David Jeffries praised Gambino for dislocating indie hip-hop to a new level and called the album remarkable. Evan Rytlevski of The A.V. Club was more critical, saying, The camp is heavy on racial expectations and cultural ostracism - big ideas that don't always triumph because of Glover's cartoonically exaggerated flow of one liner. Mosi Reeves of Spin found that the album was a bit of a mess. It wains from acute emotions to modlin hisorionics, often in the same song. Ian Cohen of Pitchfork said: While Glover's exaggerated, cartoonish flow and bloated pop rap would be enough to make Camp one of the most unique unassuming rap recordings of the year (and most others), what's worse is how he uses heavy themes such as race, masculinity, relationships, street credo and real hip-hop. Time's Claire Suddo criticised Gambino for 'bragging about all the girls he fucked' often, but praised his catchy, dance sound very similar to Kanye West and stated: Ultimately, camp is a skilful album created by a conflict man ... But if Camp doesn't have a motive, maybe it's because he doesn't have one either. He acts, he writes, he still does stand-up, and yes, he also raps. Some people can't be placed in a box that easily. Camp's commercial performance debuted at number 11 on the U.S. Billboard 200, selling 52,000 copies in its first week. According to Nielsen SoundScan, according to Nielsen SoundScan, according to Nielsen SoundScan, as of November 2013, 242,000 copies of the album were sold.
