Woolworths Chief Executive Officer, Grant O’Brien said: “We have appointed a new leadership team under Brad Banducci as Managing Director, Australian Food and Liquor. “Our Liquor business is the undisputed market leader and the best example of innovation in Australian retail, and Brad Banducci and his team have furthered that success. “Brad will continue to have responsibility for Woolworths Liquor Group until a new appointment has been made. Martin Smith, General Manager of Dan Murphy’s, will act as Director of the Woolworths Liquor Group to provide additional support to Brad. “Dave Chambers has been appointed Director, Woolworths Supermarkets, reporting to Brad. Dave has been the Managing Director of Progressive Enterprises in New Zealand for the last four years. He is a highly experienced supermarket retailer who has honed his skills in the tough and highly price‐ sensitive market of New Zealand. “This change places our best talent to lead our biggest businesses.     New Zealand Journal of History, 39, 1 (2005) ‘If there’s not one near you now, there soon will be’ AMERICAN FAST-FOOD CHAINS COME TO NEW ZEALAND* THE CURRENT (2004–2005) New Zealand television and billboard advertising campaign for Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) proclaims that its product is ‘Kiwi For Chicken’. Not only is the ‘fried’ aspect of its heritage elided, Kentucky has become New Zealand. Three decades after KFC’s arrival in New Zealand all that remains of its original marketing pitch is the chicken, flavoured with the ‘Colonel’s secret recipe’. Yet on Friday 20 August 1971, when KFC officially opened its first branch at the Manukau Road exit from the Royal Oak roundabout in Auckland — thus offering New Zealanders their first local taste of branded American fast food — the Americanness of the chicken was to the fore. Full-page advertisements in the Auckland Star (Figure 1) promoted the store’s opening with a large photograph of the company’s founder, Colonel Harland B. Sanders, and promises of free balloons for children. Live music from the Southern Bend Blue Grass Band accompanied the festivities.1 By the early twenty-first century, however, American fast food in New Zealand is so commonplace that we rarely notice it at all; ‘Kiwi For Chicken’ hardly raises an eyebrow. New Zealanders, of course, enjoyed take-away food prior to the arrival of KFC. Fish and hot chips, meat pies and sandwiches from New Zealand Railways were staples of the local eating experience. Moreover, American influence on food and drink consumption in New Zealand had a history prior to the 1970s.

Further reproductions of this article can only be made under licence. 11 " 111111111111111111 990201346 THE FOODSTUFFS PHENOMENON Alistair Pringle Contemporary studies of the retail grocery industry in the United States and Great Britain suggest that the salient features of an apparent trend towards the internationalisation of retailing - a growing convergence of consumer tastes and markets, a rapid increase in cross-border trading. an intensification of competition and a growing concentration of retail capital - have been particularly evident in this growing and significant sub-set of the retail sector (Ducatel and Blomley, 1990: Fine and Leopold, 1993: Akehurst and Alexander. 1995; Bums and Rayman, 1995: Davies and FJemmer, 1995; Sparks, 1995), The consequence, over the past two decades, has been a significant decline in the numbers of owner-operated stores and independent banner groups and a corresponding growth in the number of corporately owned supennarket chains. Over the same period the corporate share of the market has grown, on average, from around 50% to between 75% and 80% (Akehurst, 1983: Senker. 1988; Lewis and Thomas, 1990: Fine and Leopold, 1993; Walsh, 1993; Knox and Thompson, 1994), while that of the independents has correspondingly decreased. The process has not been unifonn.
