EADP 2700 Fall Semester 2006 Syllabus The purpose of this syllabus is to provide a course description, to state the objectives for the course, to describe course expectations, to provide the planned schedule of topics to be covered during the semester, to specify the course’s grading system, to provide grading worksheets for the semester, to specify important dates for the course, to provide a description of the meaning of grades, and to state University and Departmental polices related to disability accommodations and cheating / plagiarism. As the field of emergency management is event driven, the Professor retains the right to alter the syllabus, as needed. While alterations are not planned, if any changes are made to this document they will be clearly announced at the beginning of class periods. II. Course Description The purpose of this course is to provide a context for better understanding the relationship between filmed programs and disaster management. The course begins with the suggestion that filmed programs are an important factor in contributing to society’s perception and understanding of both emergency management and disasters themselves. As film and mass media are ubiquitous in today’s world, it can be argued that much of the basis for understanding contemporary societal issues is provided by some form of filmed programs. -

May 15, 2005 Original link I’m adding this post not through blogging software, like I normally do, but by hand, right into the webpage. It feels odd. I’m doing this because a week or so ago my web server started making funny error messages and not working so well. The web server is in Chicago and I am in California so it took a day or two to get someone to check on it. The conclusion was the hard drive had been fried. When the weekend ended, we sent the disk to a disk repair place. They took a look at it and a couple days later said that they couldn’t do anything. The heads that normally read and write data on a hard drive by floating over the magnetized platter had crashed right into it. While the computer was giving us error messages it was also scratching away a hole in the platter. It got so thin that you could see through it. This was just in one spot on the disk, though, so we tried calling the famed Drive Savers to see if they could recover the rest. They seemed to think they wouldn’t have any better luck. (Please, plase, please, tell me if you know someplace to try.) I hadn’t backed the disk up for at least a year (in fairness, I was literally going to back it up when I found it giving off error messages) and the thought of the loss of all that data was crushing. -

Oja Rubber Souls: Rock and Roll and the Racial Imagination Abstract This dissertation explores the interplay of popular music and racial thought in the 1960s, and asks how, when, and why rock and roll music “became white.” By Jimi Hendrix’s death in 1970 the idea of a black man playing electric lead guitar was considered literally remarkable in ways it had not been for Chuck Berry only ten years earlier: employing an interdisciplinary combination of archival research, musical analysis, and critical race theory, this project explains how this happened, and in doing so tells two stories simultaneously.
