Welcome to Edinburgh's famed, multiple award- winning, totally unique, non-stop focus for top-class music, with its wonderful internal ambience and very cool vibe. We stage multi-genre gigs every day, every week, all year round, as one-third Jazz, one-third Acoustic/Roots/Blues, and one-third Funk/Soul/Electric. Every single night you'll hear a wide range of extremely high-quality music, in a fabulous ambience. Open your ears - it's all good stuff! FRINGE SHOWS In August the venue is used by Fringe Shows, who come in from all over the World to perform here. Each show is totally independent, and they keep ALL admissions money for their shows, which are all listed here, as well as in the official Fringe Programme and Website. To book advance tickets for all shows, use the Fringe Box Office, or you can pay cash (sorry - no cards!) at the door, at showtime. NOTE: the venue does NOT take bookings, nor reserve seating, for ANY shows. Fringe Box Office: 180 High Street EH1 1QS phone 0131 226 0000; www.edfringe.com 'JAZZ BAR MUSIC' As well as hosting those Fringe Shows, we stage our own programme of Jazz and Late Night Funk featuring really excellent local and visiting bands. The Fringe Programme lists these as 'Jazz Bar Music', and advance tickets are bookable via the Fringe Box Office, or you can just pay cash (sorry - no cards!) on the door at showtime. All door money goes to the bands. Full details of who's playing these slots are on the Jazz Bar website: www.thejazzbar.co.uk. CHILDREN & YOUNG ADULTS Under the terms of our Licence we are obliged to observe City Council Regulations. Each show has an age limit shown. Please check these before bringing youngsters in! We'd hate it just as much as you, to see sad wee faces if we're forced to refuse admission due to non-negotiable Council restrictions. ACCESS, DRESS The venue is in the basement of an older (c1860) building, with access by two flights of stairs down. Unfortunately there is no space for us to create disabled access, and there is no disabled toilet in the venue. Under City of Edinburgh Council regulations, we are obliged to notify that any wheelchair users will have to be carried down and back up the stairs by their own assistants, who must remain with them at all times while in the premises, in case of emergency evacuation. DRESS is smart/casual, but please, no shorts, tracksuit bottoms or flip-flop footwear. Have A Great Fringe! EADP 2700 Fall Semester 2006 Syllabus The purpose of this syllabus is to provide a course description, to state the objectives for the course, to describe course expectations, to provide the planned schedule of topics to be covered during the semester, to specify the course’s grading system, to provide grading worksheets for the semester, to specify important dates for the course, to provide a description of the meaning of grades, and to state University and Departmental polices related to disability accommodations and cheating / plagiarism. As the field of emergency management is event driven, the Professor retains the right to alter the syllabus, as needed. While alterations are not planned, if any changes are made to this document they will be clearly announced at the beginning of class periods. II. Course Description The purpose of this course is to provide a context for better understanding the relationship between filmed programs and disaster management. The course begins with the suggestion that filmed programs are an important factor in contributing to society’s perception and understanding of both emergency management and disasters themselves. As film and mass media are ubiquitous in today’s world, it can be argued that much of the basis for understanding contemporary societal issues is provided by some form of filmed programs.

  • Two Ladies of Song Offer Two Different Paths to Great Jazz
Two Ladies of Song Offer Two Different Paths to Great Jazz By Ralph A. Miriello Jazz Journalist Each week there seems to be at least one CD in my mailbox that features yet another female jazz singer. Some have stellar back-up bands or top quality arrangers. Few leave lasting impressions Here are two that do. Singer Kathy Kosins, a name previously unfamiliar to me, has released an album of songs culled from what is often referred to as the "cool" school of jazz. Chris Connor, Anita O'Day and June Christy, were all at one time lead singers in the Kenton band during its heyday, eventually breaking into reasonably successful solo careers of their own. The fourth singer, the beautiful Julie London, was a WWII pin-up, an actress and torch singer whose most famous song "Cry Me A River" featured her signature smoky, sensual voice. Kosins and her musical director/pianist Tamir Hendelman unearth some rarely heard gems from their repertoire. It didn't take long for me to become a convert to the fittingly laid-back delivery and chilled sense of time that Kosins so adeptly captures here on her latest release To the Ladies of Cool. She not only toasts the hipness of these wonderful ladies of song, she authentically recreates a lost genre of female jazz singing. Recalling a time where serious artists could enjoy being both pop stars and respected jazz musicians. Kosins, like the women she pays homage to, possesses a warm, sensuous voice with an easy sense of time. Her words flow as effortlessly as maple syrup over hot pancakes.

In his late teens he enrolled in San Francisco State University only to find that he was not learning as quickly or as much as he thought he would. He later found out that studying with Hollywood’s best teachers would move him quicker down the path that he envisioned. He studied harmony, composition, orchestration, counterpoint, and compositional form. Realizing his intense interest in composing and arranging he decided it would be beneficial to take lessons on just about every instrument that he may some day need to write for. While in his early 20s he had the opportunity to regularly conduct a symphony orchestra in the Hollywood area. This too would give him real world experience in writing and conducting for large ensembles. In 1939 the composer of the radio show This is Our America was sick and it was suggested that Garcia be hired as a substitute.
