Dieses einzigar- tige und innovative Gedicht wurde ins Judenspanische (Ladino) übersetzt. Der Artikel möchte die sephardische Version von Gordons Gedicht vorstellen. Es soll versucht werden, die Hintergründe für die Übersetzung dieses Werks in Ladino zu analysie- ren, die Rezeption der Übersetzung durch die Leserschaft und die Herausforderungen, denen sich der anonyme Übersetzer stellen musste, der das Werk der ladino-lesenden Öffentlichkeit im vollen Bewusstsein zugänglich machen wollte, dass diese Version sich deutlich vom zugrundeliegenden aschkenasischen Original unterscheidet. Abstract Kotzo shel yod by Y. L. Gordon (1832–1892) – one of the prominent intellectuals of the Jewish Enlightenment period – is a well-known Hebrew poem. This poem is characterized by a daring, sharp criticism of the traditional Jewish institutions, which the author felt required a critical shake-up. Gordon’s literary works were inspired by the Jewish a shkenazi world. t his unique and pioneering literary work was translated into Judeo-Spanish (Ladino). The aim of this article is to present the Sephardic version of Gordon’s poem. -

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS 2017/18 HEBREW AND JEWISH STUDIES Introduction to Biblical Hebrew HEBR1005 (UG)/HEBRG045 (PG)/ HEBR1005A (Affiliate) Lecturer: Ms Sonja Noll Credit value: 1.0 (0.5 Affiliate – 1 term) Description: Introduction to Biblical Hebrew is designed to familiarise complete beginners with biblical Hebrew language and literature in a lively and enjoyable manner. We use a textbook that includes fun stories, authentic biblical texts, vocabulary and grammar help, and many on-line learning aids, including audio. By the end of the year you will have acquired a solid grounding in biblical Hebrew grammar and vocabulary and will have read an extensive range of fascinating biblical narratives, starting with the creation story and including some of the best-known biblical stories such as the flood, the tower of Babel, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the exodus from Egypt, Samuel and David, King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba, Job, and more. Playful Subversions: Hollywood Pirates Plunder Spanish America NINA GERASSI-NAVARRO The figure of the pirate evokes a number of distinct and contrasting images: from a fearless daredevil seeking adventure on the high seas to a dangerous and cruel plunderer moved by greed. Owing obedience to no one and loyal only to those sharing his way of life, the pirate knows no limits other than the sea and respects no laws other than his own. His portrait is both fascinating and frightening. As a hero, he is independent, audacious, intrepid and rebellious. Defying society's rules and authority, sailing off to the unknown in search of treasures, fearing nothing, the pirate is the ultimate symbol of freedom. But he is also a dangerous outlaw, known for his violent tactics and ruthless assaults. The social code he lives by inspires enormous fear, for it is extremely rigid and anyone daring to disobey the rules will suffer severe punishments. These polarized images have captured the imagination of historians and fiction writers alike. Sword in hand, eye-patch, with a hyperbolic mustache and lascivious smile, Captain Hook is perhaps the most obvious image-though burlesque- of the dangerous fictional pirate. His greedy hook destroys everything that crosses his hungry path, even children. On a more serious level, we might think of the tortures the cruel and violent Captain Morgan inflicted upon his enemies, hanging them by their testicles, cutting their ears or tongues off; or of Jean David Nau, the French pirate known as L 'Ollonais (el Olonés in Spanish), who would rip the heart out of his victims if they did not comply with his requests; 1 or even the terrible Blackbeard who enjoyed locking himself up with a few of his men and shooting at them in the dark: «If I don't kill someone every two or three days I will lose their respect» he is said to have claimed justifyingly. -

I approach this movement as a Jew, yet without fear or hatred. I believe that I can see in it the elements of cruel sport, of common commercial rivalry, of inherited prejudice, of religious intolerance—but also of a supposed need for self-defense. I consider the Jewish question neither a social nor a religious one, even though it sometimes takes these and other forms. It is a national question, and to solve it we must first of all establish it as an international political problem to be discussed and settled by the civilized nations of the world in council. We are a people—one people. We have sincerely tried everywhere to merge with the national communities in which we live, seeking only to preserve the faith of our fathers. It is not permitted us. In vain are we loyal patriots, sometimes superloyal; in vain do we make the same sacrifices of life and property as our fellow citizens; in vain do we strive to enhance the fame of our native lands in the arts and sciences, or her wealth by trade and commerce. In our native lands where we have lived for centuries we are still decried as aliens, often by men whose ancestors had not yet come at a time when Jewish sighs had long been heard in the country. -

HEBREW 2241/JEWSH ST 2242 THE CULTURE OF CONTEMPORARY ISRAEL Instructor: Office hours: Office: E-mail: OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this course is to familiarize students with contemporary Israeli culture in all of its diversity. Since the founding of the State in 1948, Israeli society has faced a series of dramatic challenges and has undergone tremendous changes. This course will survey the major social, cultural, religious and political trends in Israel, with special emphasis on the post-1967 period. We will explore developments in music, dance, poetry, and archaeology; responses to founding ideals and ideologies; the impact of the Arab-Israeli conflict; efforts to absorb new waves of immigration and to deal with questions of ethnicity; and the roles of religion and secularism in Israeli society. We will draw on a broad range of material, including print media, films, and YouTube clips. By the end of the course, students should have an insight into the complexity of Israeli society and the richness of Israeli culture, as well as an understanding of Israel’s role in Jewish life, the Middle East, and the world at large. COURSE REQUIREMENTS: ATTENDANCE AND PARTICIPATION (10%): 1. You are expected to attend all class sessions. 2. You are expected to read all assigned material. 3.
