And blest are those Whose blood and judgment are so well commeddled That they are not a pipe for Fortune’s finger To sound what stop she please. Give me that man That is not passion’s slave, and I will wear him In my heart’s core, ay, in my heart of heart, As I do thee. Shakespeare, Hamlet (3.2.66–75)* Prior to this eulogy on Horatio’s blessed balance of ‘blood and judgement’, Hamlet gives his advice to the players, in which he conjures the embarrassing image of a bad actor in a wig, to warn the actors against ‘tear[ing] a passion to tatters’ (3.2.10) with over- emphatic gestures and too much shouting. In both art and life, then, Hamlet seems to privilege cool judgement over hot passion. The description of Horatio as ‘one in suffering all that suffers nothing’ suggests a complete detachment from the emotions produced by ‘fortune’s buffets and rewards’, a stoical paradigm of self-control in the face of the slings and arrows Hamlet has already contemplated in the play (3.1.58). A similar privileging of reason over passion emerges in a range of early modern treatises on the passions. While the apatheia with which Hamlet credits Horatio is regularly dismissed as unnaturally blockish and un-Christian1 much of the advice available to the early modern reader on the subject of emotion concerns its restraint and control. The reader is either advised against indulging the passions at all, or told that their expression should be moderated.2 It is brutish to feel nothing – but to feel too much is to reduce oneself to the the level xiv Emotional Excess on the Shakespearean Stage of the unreasoning animal. Whereas today, emotion in Western culture is regarded as an individuating force – when exhorted to ‘express yourself ’ it is often emotion one is being asked to ‘express’ – the early modern passions are frequently described as that which makes one less of an individual.

    HAMLET: PRESS RESPONSES Almeida & West End (2017) Shakespeare www.roberticke.com FINANCIAL TIMES Ian Shuttleworth ★★★★★ I have been privileged to see several first-class Hamlets this century: Simon Russell Beale, Samuel West, David Tennant, Rory Kinnear, Maxine Peake, arguably Lars Eidinger. Andrew Scott is at least as outstanding as any of those, and right now I’m inclined to rank him in front. His Prince is almost always self-aware, but not self-understanding; on the contrary, his keynote is a kind of bemused wonder at goings-on both within and beyond his skin. The great soliloquies seem new-minted, every word a separate question. The playfulness at which Scott so excels (most notably as Moriarty in BBC-TV’s Sherlock) is here kept under a rigorously tight rein. I did not see this production when it opened at the Almeida a few months ago, but my impression is that neither Scott’s nor anyone else’s performance has been ramped up for a venue two and half times the size; the consequent occasional intelligibility problems are far outweighed by the sense of human scale. For this is the glory of Robert Icke’s production. It does not consist of a superlative Prince Hamlet, a clutch of fine supporting performances and a number of sharp directorial ideas stitched together into a plausible fabric; rather, it is whole and entire of itself. Angus Wright’s cool, disciplined Claudius, Juliet Stevenson’s besotted-then-horrified Gertrude, Jessica Brown Findlay’s Ophelia (at first at sea like Hamlet, finally psychologically shattered in a wheelchair), David Rintoul’s doubling of the Ghost and the Player King .

Once you have experienced the top tier, these are where you should go next. They may not represent the highest achievement in each genre, but they are definitely a cut above the rest. Finally, the titles which are in a regular black font constitute the rest of the films within the genre. I would be the first to admit that some of these may actually be worthy of being “ranked” more highly, but it is a ridiculously subjective matter. The rhetorician Quintillian regarded his Odes as almost the only Latin lyrics worth reading, justifying his estimate with the words: "He can be lofty sometimes, yet he is also full of charm and grace, versatile in his figures, and felicitously daring in his choice of words." Horace also crafted elegant hexameter verses (Sermones and Epistles) and scurrilous iambic poetry (Epodes). The hexameters are playful and yet serious works, leading the ancient satirist Persius to comment: "as his friend laughs, Horace slyly puts his finger on his every fault; once let in, he plays about the heartstrings". Some of his iambic poetry, however, can seem wantonly repulsive to modern audiences. His career coincided with Rome's momentous change from Republic to Empire. An officer in the republican army that was crushed at the Battle of Philippi in 42 BC, he was befriended by Octavian's right-hand man in civil affairs, Maecenas, and became something of a spokesman for the new regime. For some commentators, his association with the regime was a delicate balance in which he maintained a strong measure of independence (he was "a master of the graceful sidestep") but for others he was, in < a href="http://www.poemhunter.com/john-henry-dryden/">John Dryden's</a> phrase, "a well-mannered court slave".

    RESNICOW SCHROEDER March 18, 2011 RSC: How Stratford got its bite back Vibrant, sexy and ensconced in a swish new home, as it reaches its 50th year the Royal Shakespeare Company is buzzing. But just a while ago, it looked doomed. Charles Spencer meets Michael Boyd, the man who pulled an institution back from the brink Michael Boyd strikes me as one of the great unsung heroes of our cultural life. With dogged determination, the artistic director has pulled the Royal Shakespeare Company back to the commanding heights of British theatre. As the company prepares to celebrate its 50th anniversary season in Stratford, in a building that has been spectacularly transformed, I can’t remember a time when it seemed in more exuberant form, or more sharply focused. The rise in its fortunes seems to be encapsulated by its joyous smash hit Matilda, based on the Roald Dahl story, which opened last December. It’s the best new musical since Billy Elliot and will transfer to the West End this autumn, with Broadway almost certain to follow. Suddenly the RSC seems vibrant and sexy again. Last week the critics were invited to see productions of King Lear and Romeo and Juliet in the newly remodelled Royal Shakespeare Theatre. Very wisely, Boyd is opening the new building with shows that were already in the rep of the temporary Courtyard Theatre, a massive metal box that provided both a home, and the prototype for the new RST, during the three and a half years of the building project – which finished on time and on budget.

Alexander Meiklejohn claimed that the decision was "an occasion for dancing in the streets. ' 3 He believed that the decision would have a major impact on defamation law, and he was right. After the decision, many years elapsed during which "there were virtually no recoveries by public officials in libel 4 actions." The most important component of the New York Times decision was its "actual malice" standard. This standard provided that, in order to recover against a media defendant, a public official must demonstrate that the defendant acted with "malice.'
