Making unique art pieces through mosaic comes naturally to the expat based in Doha

AKING unique art pieces through mosaic comes naturally to this Ugandan expatriate based in Doha. MJeff Wamala, who dabbles in art during his free time, uses banana fibers to create intricate pieces of art. A mosaic, it may be noted, is a piece of art or image made from the assembling of small pieces of coloured glass, stone, or other materials. Talking to Qatar Tribune, Wa- mala, who came to Qatar in De- cember last year, said,“I have been doing art for a very long time at home. I decided to specialise in mosaic using banana fibers. I know Qatar does not have banana fibers so when I was coming here I packed some.”I brought with me one of my A portrait of HH Amir made by Ugandan artist Jeff Wamala. art pieces as well.” Wamala carried banana fibere with him for the simple reason of love for his art. “It doesn’t require a lot of fibers to do a piece. Just a few are needed. The fibers are light. I had the idea of coming to Qatar and doing mosaic.” Wamala said he wanted to use banana fibers from Uganda to make an art piece that people in Qatar can relate to. “I wanted to use a foreign raw material to make a piece that people can relate to locally.” He said even though bananas don’t grow here, it didn’t deter him from making unique art pieces while here in Qatar. “I thought of doing a portrait of HH the Amir.” While creating this he wanted to do a piece that is familiar with peo- ple and that’s why he made a smil- ing portrait of HH the Amir. Talking about how he choose a banana mosaic as his media, and not canvas on acrylic like many artistes, he said he is so patriotic about being an African. “I am a Ugandan and back home, banana is our staple food. When a banana plant is growing it has fiber which is like a waste material. In this case, I want to put the waste material into use. I want to do something positive with the waste material.” Besides using banana fiber for art in Uganda, women use it for food preparation. “As an artist, I see something else with the ba- Wamala in Katara, recently.
