180-224 Advertisements Linden High School Preface

We, the members of the Class of 1959, are now ending a very important chapter in the story of our lives, a chapter that took us four years to write. In it are our happiness and un happiness, our anticipations and our disappoint ments ; and best of all, the wonderful memories we have gathered in Linden High School. In the years to come one of us may be the architect who designs your home, the postman on your route, the teacher of your children, the healer of your body, or the man who brings you close to God. We hope that through this, our story, our 1959 Cynosure, you will better understand us, our hopes, and our dreams. To tell our tale, we have chosen music as our theme. The songs we sang in assembly, the ones we heard whistled as classes passed, our foot ball and basketball songs, the ones we caught ourselves humming on a special day, our Alma Mater; and finally the songs at graduation, these have become a vital part of our lives during our stay at Linden High School. In the 1959 Cynosure we have tried to cap ture the music in our lives in school, so that we may keep it forever.

The day rings are picked out is a mighty big one for the senior class. Will it he a round or a square ring? Will it have a red or a blue stone? These are questions that eventually get answered by each individual stu dent. Then all that remains is the long wait until the rings finally ar rive and prove we’re really seniors.

Lunch serves a dual purpose for Micky Gerber and friends. The Spanish idioms that they didn’t have time to do the night before, just have to get finished before class today.

78 Arthur Whiteman records the score as teachers watch the game.

]ohn Lewentowicz makes a gallant effort to retrieve the ball for the Seniors. Senior-Faculty Game

One of Linden High’s many traditions is the annual Senior-Faculty Basketball Game. One senior boy from each homeroom is chosen for a team to play against the teachers on a 'chosen day after school. The game is sponsored by the Student Council and the proceeds of the game are used for a scholarship for a senior boy or girl in Linden High. To everyone’s amazement the victorious team is usually the teachers. This is one event which everyone, both teachers and students, look forward to with great anticipation each year.

Lennie Codella assists Mr. Barr in serving half-time refreshment to teachers.

Yah! Yah! Seniors Exciting action is provided by John Lewentowicz as he attempts to retrieve the ball. ^

Halloween is a time of fun and excite ment for all. As everyone in Linden knows, it is celebrated in a special way. The students of the high school elect a Queen and King under the leadership of the Student Council. Each senior homeroom nominates one girl and one boy. This year the nominees were Robert Beck, Delores Amoscato, Carol Cala brese, John Chrauowski, Mary Ann Devlin, John Deem, June Gaydos, Donald Goleme, Linda Jauch, Bob Hoover, Delores Kmetz, Ronald Kologi, Pat Leskin, John Lewento- wicz, Arleen Nester, Stephen Ombalski,

The attendents were Carol Calabrese, Bob Hoover, Pat Leskin, John Lewentowicz, Kathy Paffrath, Bob Petraitis, Rita Vander meer, and Eddie Strapp. All the grammar schools and junior high schools participate in the parade by making floats and having the pupils march in a variety of costumes.

Cathy Rocca and John Lewentowtcz dem onstrate "Promenade." Recognize these familiar calls? Each year the words "Honor your partner” open an evening of fun fo.r the juniors and seniors of Linden High. This year, for the second time, two sepa rate barn dances were held. The Senior Barn Dance took place on November 3, while the Junior Barn Dance followed on November 21. The senior decorating committee followed the traditional autumn theme which always proves effective. Shorty Warren and his Western Rangers provided the music, and halfway through the evening Bob Konecny, Senior Class President, led the Grand March to the cafeteria for refreshments. The refreshment committee, too, followed tradition by serving cider and d oughnuts. At the Junior Barn Dance, also decorated in the autumn theme, Bud Page and his Rhythm Orchids called the dances. Steve Orlando, Junior Class President, led the Grand March to the cafeteria for their cider and doughnuts. There he thanked all of the chairmen and sponsors of each committee for their help in making the evening such a success.

The Linden High School Band added color and music to our football games this year. Their bright orange and black uniforms fit in with the beautiful colors of the fall season. The band also took part in the annual Hal loween Parade, Memorial Day Parade and intro duced and concluded the assembly programs. Anyone able to play a band instrument was eligible to participate. The members of Linden High School’s choral groups find pleasure, enjoyment, and experience through vocal participa tion under the guidance of Mrs. Salher. The Glee Club consists of girls, who through their hard work, will learn to appreciate and understand music. They combine their voices to produce music enjoyed by the entire school. Choir members concentrate on improving their talent and increasing their knowledge of the musical field. They put time and effort into their work and are an asset to Linden High Sch ool. This year our school is honored to have two members of our student body participating in the New Jersey All-State David Garber Chorus, David Garber and Bertha Armstead. “Gym” Dandies

This year the Girls Sports Program included such activities as soccer, basketball, baseball and badminton. A new addition to the program which proved quite successful was the Hawaiian Hula Dance. The girls were .taught both the interpretive hand motions as well as the basic foot step. During the year many girls qualified as officials for basketball and volleyball games. They not only learned more about the basic rules of the game, but aided their teacher by refereeing these games during class. Under the instruction and guidance of Mrs. Creitz and Mrs. Casale, the girls had the opportunity to develop or increase their athletic ability, sportsmanship and team spirit.

As the members of the three language clubs participated in games, songs and other programs of pleasure, they added more background to the language they have exercised in class. Members of the French Club met every other week. Mrs. Berkowitz was their director. The members learned French dances, songs, and games, such as scrabble. They also discussed the great French artists, composers, and writers. Mrs. Ramage directed the Spanish Club which met every other week. The members participated in, and enjoyed songs, dances, and played Spanish games. Original performances were en acted at every meeting. Advised by Mr. Moldaschl, the members of the German Club sang songs and played German games. They held many conversations to further their fluency in the language. The aims of these clubs have therefore been to add pleasure and supplementary knowledge which will remain in the minds of the students Vive la France! for a long time.

Everyone returned to the gym for more dancing to the music of Don Gibson until twelve o’clock, when the prom was over.

Seniors work hard to develop "Under the Sea” theme in the gym. 159 fiJ i t r ® / t í a m ■ i m ' I r^ "VI i I

In marking its fifth anniversary, Linden SOCCER High School’s soccer team produced a record well worth celebrating. The team, captained by Joe Kornas and Harry Rishell, compiled a .500 average in its fifteen outings. Their SEASON success was largely due to the able coaching of Frank Catale, head coach, and Ralph Frazier, his assistant. But a team is unsuccessful without the SUCCESS powerful spirit and ability to win. Fortu nately, the members of the squad were equipped with both. Joe Kornas, keyman of the offense, held the honor of being the third highest scorer in the county, with twelve goals. Wingmen, Bob Wylie, Tom Givens, and Mike Farber, halfbacks, Bob Drake and Harry Rishell, fullbacks, Dan Jeremko and Andy Kupka, and goalie, John Holzenthaler, all exhibited harmonious team work which greatly aided the success. A team cannot rest on its past victories and Linden High’s 1959 soccer team, al though minus a few key men, is fortunate to have Ray Crepeau, Mark Hebei, George Grumet, and John Holzenthaler to maintain its predecessor’s honor.

Last year’s Group IV Central Jersey champs lived up to their name this year, even though some of the old team was missing. Up to this time the Linden High cagers have captured two vital titles to add to their prestige. They soared over four other schools to gain the champion ship of the Big Five Conference. With Coach St. Andrassy’s expert training, the Linden High Five rose to the Central New Jersey Group IV Conference champ ion sh ip . This year, as in the past, Linden High School has produced the top scorer of Union County. Ted Zawacki is his name. He was named to the Metropolitan All- Star Team by the New York Daily News. Our outstanding player was also chosen for the Union County All-Stars and the New Jersey State All-Stars. But, of course, no team is comprised of just one; the rest of our players ex hibited superb playing, teamwork, and sportsmanship during the year, as is evi dent by the titles they hold. Linden High School’s three year old tennis squad again brought rec ognition to our school. As in the past two years, Robert Weitzman and Bruce Chodosh were elected Co-captains, and with the guidance of Coach Ray Stokes, lead the squad in their fine work. Our team was excellent this year, considering their experience wasn’t as great as many of the teams they played against. In the county tourna ment the Tigers went right up to the semi-finals. Since the team is made up mostly of underclassmen, we can be sure of a better, more experienced squad for next year.

Several members received injuries which disabled them for the season. The players showed excellent sportsmanship and team work which are essential to every good team. The Junior Varsity team also had a good season with the guidance of Coach Kinsella. Many of these boys are ready to play on the Varsity team next year. Rickie Cichowski and Tom Archiply, two of the best men on the squad were awarded the honor of being selected for the All-Country team, and Eliiah Herriot was on the All-State team. The reward for a season’s hard work came when the entire team was presented with the Cen tral Jersey Group IV title.
